Abstract
Objectives To investigate both the prevalence and clinical characteristics of serositis in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a large cohort in the Chinese SLE Treatment and Research group (CSTAR) database. Methods A prospective cross-sectional study of patients with SLE was conducted based on the data from the CSTAR registry. Serositis was defined according to the 1999 revised American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for SLE – that is, pleuritis/pleural effusion and/or pericarditis/pericardial effusion detected by echocardiography, chest X-ray or chest computerized tomography (CT) scan. Peritonitis/peritoneal effusion were confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography. We analysed the prevalence and clinical associations of serositis with demographic data, organ involvements, laboratory findings and SLE disease activity. Results Of 2104 patients with SLE, 345 were diagnosed with serositis. The prevalence of lupus nephritis (LN), interstitial lung disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as the presence of leukocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypocomplementemia and anti-dsDNA antibodies was significantly higher in patients with serositis ( P < 0.05). Significantly higher SLE disease activity scores were found in patients with serositis compared to those patients without serositis ( P < 0.05). Lupus-related peritonitis had similar clinical manifestations and laboratory profiles as serositis caused by SLE. Conclusions There is a significant association of nephropathy, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, hypocomplementemia, leukocytopenia, thrombocytopenia and elevated anti-dsDNA antibodies with serositis. The results suggest that higher SLE disease activity contributes to serositis development, and should be treated aggressively.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of low-frequency, low-intensity ultrasound (US)-stimulated microbubbles (USMB) on radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of nude mice with human prostate cancer xenografts. The tumor‑bearing nude mice were divided into three groups: The USMB+RFA group was treated with USMB immediately followed by RFA, the RFA group was treated with RFA alone, and the control group remained untreated. The animals underwent enhanced US to calculate the tumor volumes, ablation volumes and ablation rates. Subsequently, the tumors were excised for hematoxylin and eosin staining, to identify necrosis in the tumors following the treatments, and immunohistochemical staining, to analyze the apoptotic index (AI), proliferative index (PI) and microvessel density (MVD) at 1, 4 and 7 days post-treatment. Each group contained five mice at each time‑point. Necrosis was apparent in the center of the tumors in the treatment groups. Ablation lesion volumes of the USMB+RFA group were larger than those in the RFA group at 1 and 4 days post‑treatment (P=0.002 and P=0.022, respectively), and the ablation rates of the USMB+RFA group were significantly higher, compared with the RFA group at the three time‑points (all P<0.001). There were fewer apoptotic cells and more proliferative cells in the RFA group, compared with the control group 1,4 and 7 days post‑treatment (all P<0.05). The AI of the USMB+RFA group was higher than that of the control group and lower than that of the RFA group 1 day post-treatment (P=0.034 and P=0.016, respectively). The PI of the USMB+RFA group was lower than that of the control group and higher than that of the RFA group 4 and 7 days post-treatment (all P<0.05). No significant differences were observed in MVD among the three groups throughout the experiment. In conclusion, exposure to USMB prior to RFA produced larger volumes of ablation, compared with treatment with RFA alone, and increased AI and reduced PI in the residual carcinoma cells induced by RFA.

Abstract
The present study aimed to provide a complete exploration of the effect of sound intensity, frequency, duty cycle, microbubble volume and irradiation time on low-frequency low-intensity ultrasound (US)-mediated microvessel disruption, and to identify an optimal combination of the five factors that maximize the blockage effect. An orthogonal experimental design approach was used. Enhanced US imaging and acoustic quantification were performed to assess tumor blood perfusion. In the confirmatory test, in addition to acoustic quantification, the specimens of the tumor were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and observed using light microscopy. The results revealed that sound intensity, frequency, duty cycle, microbubble volume and irradiation time had a significant effect on the average peak intensity (API). The extent of the impact of the variables on the API was in the following order: Sound intensity; frequency; duty cycle; microbubble volume; and irradiation time. The optimum conditions were found to be as follows: Sound intensity, 1.00 W/cm2; frequency, 20 Hz; duty cycle, 40%; microbubble volume, 0.20 ml; and irradiation time, 3 min. In the confirmatory test, the API was 19.97±2.66 immediately subsequent to treatment, and histological examination revealed signs of tumor blood vessel injury in the optimum parameter combination group. In conclusion, the Taguchi L18 (3)6 orthogonal array design was successfully applied for determining the optimal parameter combination of API following treatment. Under the optimum orthogonal design condition, a minimum API of 19.97±2.66 subsequent to low-frequency and low-intensity mediated blood perfusion blockage was obtained.

Abstract
Recent progress in modelling the solvent vapor annealing of thin film block copolymers is examined in the context of a self-consistent field theory framework. Key control variables in determining the final microdomain morphologies include swelling ratio or swollen film solvent volume fraction, swollen film thickness, substrate and vapor atmosphere surface energies, effective volume fraction, and effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter. The regime of solvent vapor annealing studied is where the block copolymer has a high enough Flory-Huggins parameter that ordered structures form during swelling and are then trapped in the system through quenching. Both implicit and explicit consideration of the solvent vapor is considered to distinguish the cases in which solvent vapor leads to a non-bulk morphology. Block-selective solvents are considered based on the experimental systems of polystyrene-b-polydimethylsiloxane annealed with toluene and heptane. The results of these simulations are compared with these experiments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A recent genome-wide association study identified two genetic variants (rs12425791 and rs11833579) on chromosome 12p13 that confer risk of ischaemic stroke. The purpose of this study was to examine whether these two polymorphisms are associated with stroke onset and prognosis in a Chinese population. METHODS rs12425791 and rs11833579 were genotyped using the improved multiple ligase detection reaction in 913 patients with ischaemic stroke. Analyses of genotype association with onset and prognosis outcomes were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method, the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS rs12425791 and rs11833579 were not associated with age of stroke onset (P = 0.786 and 0.340, respectively). However, these two polymorphisms were significantly associated with risk of stroke recurrence, especially for the large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) subtype, in recessive models [hazard ratio (HR) 2.52; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-6.12 for rs12425791; HR 2.13; 95% CI 1.03-4.40 for rs11833579]. The combined genotype of these two single-nucleotide polymorphisms showed a locus-dosage effect on recurrence of LAA subtype and was an independent prognostic factor for LAA subtype in the final multivariate Cox regression model. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicated that rs12425791 and rs11833579 on chromosome 12p13 may be useful biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of patients with the LAA subtype of ischaemic stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Use of TIPSS is associated with increases in ammonia concentration and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) risk. L-ornithine-L-aspartate (LOLA) is effective in reducing ammonia concentration. AIM To evaluate the effects of LOLA on venous ammonia concentration after TIPSS. METHODS The included patients were randomised to receive LOLA or no-LOLA treatment for 7 days. Fasting and post-prandial venous ammonia levels were the primary outcomes. Psychometric performance, post-TIPSS HE, and liver and renal function were assessed as secondary outcomes. RESULTS Of 133 cirrhotic patients who received successful TIPSS between November 2011 and June 2012, 40 met the inclusion criteria and were randomised to the LOLA (n = 21) or control (n = 19) groups. Change in fasting ammonia significantly favoured the LOLA group at days 4 (P = 0.001) and 7 (P = 0.003). Changes in post-prandial ammonia concentration significantly favoured the LOLA group at days 1, 4 and 7 as well. During the study period, patients in the LOLA group had better improvement in psychometric tests than those in the control group. Overt HE during treatment was observed in one patient in the LOLA group and three patients in the control group (P = 0.331). There were no differences in complications, adverse events or mortality between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Prophylactic use of LOLA infusion after TIPSS is safe and effective in significantly reducing the increase of venous ammonia concentration, and can benefit the patient's mental status as well.

Abstract
PURPOSE Curcumin, a natural phytochemical, exhibits potent anticancer activities. Here, we sought to determine the molecular mechanisms underlying the cytotoxic effects of curcumin against human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. METHODS MTT assay and annexin-V/PI staining were used to analyze the effects of curcumin on the proliferation and apoptosis of A549 cells. The expression of microRNA-21 in curcumin-treated A549 cells was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. The protein level of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a putative target of microRNA-21, was determined by Western blot analysis. Transfection of A549 cells with microRNA-21 mimic or PTEN small interfering RNA was performed to modulate the expression of microRNA-21 and PTEN under the treatment of curcumin. RESULTS Curcumin at 20-40 μM inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in A549 cells. Curcumin treatment produced a dose-dependent and significant (P < 0.05) suppression of microRNA-21 expression, compared to untreated A549 cells. Moreover, the protein level of PTEN, a putative target of microRNA-21, was significantly elevated in curcumin-treated A549 cells, as determined by Western blot analysis. Transfection of A549 cells with microRNA-21 mimic or PTEN small interfering RNA significantly (P < 0.05) reversed the growth suppression and apoptosis induction by curcumin, compared to corresponding controls. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest a novel molecular mechanism in which inhibition of microRNA-21 and upregulation of PTEN mediate the anticancer activities of curcumin in NSCLC cells. Suppression of microRNA-21 may thus have therapeutic benefits against this malignancy.
