Enhanced Organic Photovoltaic Performance through Modulating Vertical Composition Distribution and Promoting Crystallinity of the Photoactive Layer by Diphenyl Sulfide Additives

To understand the vertical phase separation in the bulk junction active layer of organic photovoltaic devices is essential for controlling the charge transfer behavior and achieving effective charge collection. Here, diphenyl sulfide (DPS) was introduced as a novel additive into the PTB7-Th:PC₇₁BM-based inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs), and the effect of additives on active blend films and photovoltaic characteristics was carefully studied. The results show that DPS could not only modulate the vertical composition distribution but also promote the ordered molecular packing of the photoactive layer, thus effectively improving exciton dissociation, charge transport, and collection, and thus exhibit an excellent power conversion efficiency of 9.7% with an improved fill factor (>70%) after using 3% DPS additive. The results show that the DPS solvent additive can effectively adjust the vertical phase distribution and crystallinity of blend films and improve the photovoltaic performance of the inverted organic photovoltaic devices.

N-Alkylation vs. O-alkylation: influence on the performance of the photovoltaic cells based on a tetracyclic lactam polymer donor

Lactam-containing acceptors, which could provide two potential alkylation positions (N-alkylation and O-alkylation), are important building blocks for polymeric donors in high performance polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, the influence of alkylation positions on the PSC performance has seldom been studied. Herein, we investigated the influence of O-alkylation and N-alkylation on a novel bislactam acceptor, namely dibenzonaphthyridinedione (DBND), on the physical properties of the corresponding polymers and hence their PSC performance. Besides O-alkylated and N-alkylated DBND, half-N-alkylated-half-O-alkylated DBND (N,O-DBND) was also prepared and copolymerized with stannyl bithiophene (2T). It was found that by varying the alkylation positions, the optical, crystalline and aggregation properties of the corresponding polymers were greatly altered. In comparison with P(N-DBND-2T) and P(O-DBND-2T), P(N,O-DBND-2T) shows both better solubility and shorter π–π stacking distance. By blending with PC₇₁BM, P(N,O-DBND-2T) forms better nano-fibrillar phase separation so that less charge recombination is observed, thus leading to a much better power conversion efficiency (PCE) around 5%, which is the highest value of the conjugated system based on N,O-alkylated acceptors. The results show that the asymmetric N,O-alkylation protocol is a promising way to adjust the properties of the bislactam-containing conjugated polymers.

The alkylation positions (N-alkylation & O-alkylation) of a bis-lactam containing acceptor has a strong influence on the solar cell performance of the corresponding polymers.

The effects of transboundary air pollution following major events in China on air quality in the U.S.: Evidence from Chinese New Year and sandstorms

Transboundary air pollution is a global environmental and public health problem including in the U.S., where pollution emissions from China, the largest emitter of anthropogenic air pollution in the world, can travel across the Pacific Ocean and reach places like California and Oregon. We examine the effects of transboundary air pollution following major events in China, specifically sandstorms, a natural-occurring source of air pollution, and Chinese New Year, a major 7-day holiday, on background air quality in the U.S. We focus on high elevation sites on the west coast between 2000 and 2013. We use regression analysis and a natural experiment to exploit the variation in the timing of these events in China, which are plausibly uncorrelated to other factors that affect air quality in China and the U.S. We find that sandstorms are associated with statistically significant increases in background coarse and fine particulate matter (PM) in the U.S., representing between 16 and 39% of average weekly PM levels. We also find Chinese New Year is associated with modest reductions in background air quality in the U.S., representing between 0.4 and 2.5% of PM levels. Findings are robust to different models and falsification tests. These results suggest that regression analysis could be a powerful tool to complement other, more widely used techniques in the environmental sciences that study this problem. This also has important implications for policymakers, who could track major sandstorms in China and prepare for possible increased foreign pollution emissions in the U.S.

Stirring Up Acceptor Phase and Controlling Morphology via Choosing Appropriate Rigid Aryl Rings as Lever Arms in Symmetry-Breaking Benzodithiophene for High-Performance Fullerene and Fullerene-Free Polymer Solar Cells

Two series of new polymers with medium and wide bandgaps to match fullerene (PC₇₁ BM) and fullerene-free 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC) acceptors are designed and synthesized, respectively. For constructing the key donor building blocks, the effective symmetry-breaking strategy is employed. Two common aromatic rings (thiophene and benzene) are chosen as one side substituted groups in the asymmetric benzodithiophene (BDT) monomers. In addition, another rigid benzene ring is inserted between aryl and thioether in the side chains, which results in larger twisting and destroying the aggregation and forming longer lever arms. As a result, highly ordered polymers (PBDTsTh-FBT and PBDTsPh-FBT) with strong aggregation properties can blend well with roughly spherical PC₇₁ BM, while amorphous polymers (PBDTsThPh-BDD and PBDTsPhPh-BDD) with long and rigid aryl rings show good miscibility with elongated ITIC, and finally, both devices exhibit excellent power conversion efficiencies over 10%. Thus, it clearly shows that the asymmetric BDT unit is an excellent donor building block to construct highly efficient photovoltaic polymers. Meanwhile, this work demonstrates that it is not necessary that high-performance fullerene-free polymer solar cells (PSCs) require highly ordered microstructures in the blending films, different from the fullerene-based PSCs.

The gut microbiota, bile acids and their correlation in primary sclerosing cholangitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease

Background

Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease (PSC-IBD) have a very high risk of developing colorectal neoplasia. Alterations in the gut microbiota and/or gut bile acids could account for the increase in this risk. However, no studies have yet investigated the net result of cholestasis and a potentially altered bile acid pool interacting with a dysbiotic gut flora in the inflamed colon of PSC-IBD.

Aim

The aim of this study was to compare the gut microbiota and stool bile acid profiles, as well as and their correlation in patients with PSC-IBD and inflammatory bowel disease alone.

Methods

Thirty patients with extensive colitis (15 with concomitant primary sclerosing cholangitis) were prospectively recruited and fresh stool samples were collected. The microbiota composition in stool was profiled using bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing. Stool bile acids were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.

Results

The total stool bile acid pool was significantly reduced in PSC-IBD. Although no major differences were observed in the individual bile acid species in stool, their overall combination allowed a good separation between PSC-IBD and inflammatory bowel disease. Compared with inflammatory bowel disease alone, PSC-IBD patients demonstrated a different gut microbiota composition with enrichment in Ruminococcus and Fusobacterium genus compared with inflammatory bowel disease. At the operational taxonomic unit level major shifts were observed within the Firmicutes (73%) and Bacteroidetes phyla (17%). Specific microbiota-bile acid correlations were observed in PSC-IBD, where 12% of the operational taxonomic units strongly correlated with stool bile acids, compared with only 0.4% in non-PSC-IBD.

Conclusions

Patients with PSC-IBD had distinct microbiota and microbiota-stool bile acid correlations as compared with inflammatory bowel disease. Whether these changes are associated with, or may predispose to, an increased risk of colorectal neoplasia needs to be further clarified.

Expression of Dominant Negative K6W-Ubiquitin in the Lens Epithelium via an Adenoviral Vector Delays Posterior Capsule Opacification in a Rabbit Model

PURPOSE

Ubiquitin is involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, and the objective of this study is to investigate the potential of dominant negative Ubiquitin (Ub) with a lysine to tryptophan mutation at the 6 position (K6W) through an adenoviral expression vector in the prevention of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in a rabbit PCO model.

METHODS

Recombinant dominant negative K6W-Ub adenovirus (RAd-K6W-Ub) with green fluorescent protein (RAd-K6W-Ub/GFP) and RAd-GFP viruses (control) were generated with QBI-HEK 293A cells. New Zealand rabbits receiving lens phacoemulsification were given an intraoperative anterior chamber injection of the viruses. The images of anterior segment photography taken by a slit lamp biomicroscopy were analyzed by posterior capsule opacification manual software (POCOman) for PCO grading. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was detected with a non-contact tonometer (NCT). The expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was assessed by Western blotting. Cell migration ability in cultured rabbit's lens epithelial cells (LECs) was evaluated by scratch healing assay.

RESULTS

The expression of GFP and Ub in the lens epithelium was markedly upregulated after 48 hours vector injection. Eyes injected with RAd-K6W-Ub showed a significantly lower PCO degree compared with controls. Meanwhile, higher IOP and corneal edema was observed in groups with a higher RAd-K6W-Ub virus dosage. The expression of α-SMA was down-regulated in the RAd-K6W-Ub eyes as compared to controls at the 15th day after injection. Cell migration was inhibited by RAd-K6W-Ub infection.

CONCLUSIONS

RAd-K6W-Ub at an appropriate dosage could inhibit the proliferation of LECs and the formation of PCO in rabbit models. However, a higher dosage of Rad- K6W-Ub viral vector caused toxic effects to the surrounding tissues, such as corneal edema and high IOP.

Chymotrypsin with sialendoscopy-assisted surgery for the treatment of chronic obstructive parotitis

Chronic obstructive parotitis (COP) is a common disease of the parotid gland. A total of 104 patients with COP were identified and randomized into a treatment group (52 cases) and a control group (52 cases). All patients underwent sialography and salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) examinations before surgery. The patients in the treatment group received chymotrypsin combined with gentamicin via interventional sialendoscopy to irrigate the duct, and the control group received gentamicin alone. All patients were asked to record their pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) before treatment and at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. The VAS score for pain intensity was decreased at 1 week post-treatment in both groups (P<0.05). Compared to the control group, the VAS score was lower in the treatment group at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month post-treatment (P<0.05). The 6-month postoperative SGS results showed improved uptake and excretion in both groups (P<0.05). The treatment group exhibited higher scores for postoperative SGS excretion than the control group (P<0.05). The administration of chymotrypsin combined with gentamicin by sialendoscopy is effective for the treatment of non-stone-related COP and specifically improves the excretion function of the parotid gland.

Investigation of Fluorination on Donor Moiety of Donor-Acceptor 4,7-Dithienylbenzothiadiazole-Based Conjugated Polymers toward Enhanced Photovoltaic Efficiency

It is known that fluorination on π-conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers can significantly affect the optoelectronic properties and fluorination on A moiety has been well established for design of efficient photovoltaic materials. For example, polymers based on 4,7-dithienyl-5,6-difluorobenzothiadiazole (DTffBT) have been intensively investigated and exhibited excellent performance, but the corresponding DTBT-based polymers without fluorine often display an unfavorable efficiency. With the purpose of improving photovoltaic efficiency of DTBT-based D-A polymers, we design three polymers PDTBT-TxfBT (x = 0, 1, 2) with fluorination on D moiety (TxfBT) and systematically investigate fluorination on the photophysical/electrochemical and photovoltaic properties. The results show that polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on PDTBT-TBT exhibit moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.84%. However, the bis-fluorination on TffBT moiety (PDTBT-TffBT) can greatly enhance the molecular planarity and intermolecular interaction, improve the charge transport and heterojunction morphology, and further suppress the charge recombination losses. PSCs based on PDTBT-TffBT demonstrate obviously improved photovoltaic efficiency with the best PCE up to 7.53% without any processing additives, which ranks among the top DTBT-based PSCs. However, it should be noted that unsymmetrical fluorination on TfBT moiety (PDTBT-TfBT) impairs the regularity of polymer backbone and intermolecular interaction, increases the recombination losses, and seriously reduces the short-circuit current density and efficiency (5.44%). The results exhibit that fluorination on D moiety is a helpful strategy for design high-performance photovoltaic materials and the regularity of fluorination is crucial to improving efficiencies.

High-Performance Photovoltaic Polymers Employing Symmetry-Breaking Building Blocks

Two 1D-2D asymmetric benzodithiophenes (BDTs) as donor building blocks are designed and synthesized, combining the advantages of both 1D and 2D symmetric BDTs. The photovoltaic properties of the asymmetric BDT-based polymers are improved greatly in comparison with corresponding symmetric BDT-based polymers. This work provides a new approach to design prospective organic optoelectronic materials employing the symmetry-breaking strategy.

CHIP Knockdown Reduced Heat Shock Response and Protein Quality Control Capacity in Lens Epithelial Cells

Protein quality control (PQC) systems, including molecular chaperones and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP), plays an important role in maintaining intracellular protein homeostasis. Carboxyl terminus of Hsc70- interacting protein (CHIP) links the chaperone and UPPs, thus contributing to the repair or removal of damaged proteins. Over-expression of CHIP had previously been used to protect cells from environmental stress. In order to gain a more physiologic mechanism of the advantage conferred by CHIP, we induced a CHIP knockdown and monitored the ability of cells to cope with environmental stress. To knockdown CHIP, the human lens epithelial cell line HLE B3 was transfected with lentiviral particles that encode a CHIP short hairpin RNA (shRNA) or negative control lentiviral particles. Stable CHIP-knock down cells (KD) and negative control cells (NC) were selected with puromycin. After exposure to heat shock stress, there was no change observed in the expression of Hsp90. In contrast, Hsp70 levels increased significantly in NC cells but less so in KD cells. Hsp27 levels also increased after heat shock, but only in NC cells. Protein ubiquitination was reduced when CHIP was knocked down. CHIP knockdown reduced the ability to clear aggregation proteins. When same levels of aggregation-prone RFP-mutant crystallin fusion protein, RFP/V76D-γD, was expressed, there was ~9- fold more aggregates in KD cells as compared to that observed in NC cells. Furthermore, KD cells were more sensitive to toxicity of amino acid analog canavanine as compared to NC cells. Together, these data indicate that CHIP is required for PQC and that CHIP knockdown diminished cellular PQC capacity in lens cells.

PSS-based devices. Our results show that amorphous GSL is a good candidate as dopant of PEDOT, and we provide a novel prospective for the design of HEL based on lignin, a renewable biomass and phenol derivatives.

Elevated serum complement C3 levels are related to the development of prediabetes in an adult population: the Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systematic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study

AIMS

To investigate whether serum complement C3 is related to the prevalence and incidence of prediabetes in an adult population.

METHODS

A cross-sectional (n = 10 206) and prospective cohort study (n = 3333), with a mean (range; 95% CI) follow-up of 2.63 (1-6; 2.58-2.68) years, was conducted in people recruited from the Health Management Centre of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in Tianjin, China. Measurement of serum C3 concentration, blood fasting glucose, oral glucose tolerance, HbA1c and other potential confounding factors was performed at baseline and each year during the follow-up. Prediabetes was defined according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Adjusted logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the relationships between C3 quintiles and prediabetes.

RESULTS

The prevalence and incidence of prediabetes were 38.5% and 119 per 1000 person-years, respectively. In cross-sectional analysis, after adjustment for potential confounders, the odds ratios of prediabetes for increasing quintiles of C3 were 1.00 (reference), 1.32 (95% CI 1.14-1.53), 1.37 (95% CI 1.18-1.59), 1.75 (95% CI 1.51-2.03), 2.25 (95% CI 1.93-2.62; P for trend < 0.0001). In the cohort analysis, the multiple-adjusted hazard ratio of prediabetes in the highest quintile of baseline C3 was 1.43 (95% CI 1.15, 1.78; P for trend < 0.001), when compared with the lowest quintile.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings indicate that elevated serum C3 levels are significantly related to an increased risk of developing prediabetes in an adult population, suggesting that C3 can be used as a biomarker in high-risk individuals to improve primary prevention of prediabetes and diabetes.

Improving the Fluorescence Concentration Quenching of Porphyrin Potassium Salt by Ag Nano Colloids

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters less than 25 nm, and 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin potassium salt (K4TCPPS) was synthesized. By adding silver colloids into the K4TCPPS solutions, the fluorescence concentration quenching of the K4TCPPS solutions was improved between 1 x 10(-6) - 5 x 10(-4) M, depending on the size of the Ag NPs, the concentration of the K4TCPPS and the excitation wavelength. Under excitation wavelengths of 360 and 414 nm, the enhancement was in the range of 0.34-22.8, and 0.71-82.46, respectively. The enhancement increased with decreasing size of the Ag NPs. At the two highest enhancements, the concentrations of the K4TCPPS solutions were 1 x 10(-4) and 1 x 10(-5) M respectively, and the size of the Ag NPs was about 5 nm. The main reasons for the fluorescence enhancing effect are due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between K4TCPPS molecules and Ag NPs, and decreased collision quenching between free K4TCPPS molecules, and free K4TCPPS molecules with Ag NPs. Our results showed that Ag NPs with sizes of about 5 nm can effectively improve the fluorescence concentration quenching of K4TCPPS solutions. This result also suggests that it is possible to use noble metal NPs to improve fluorescence concentration quenching.

Compact Layer Free Perovskite Solar Cells with a High-Mobility Hole-Transporting Layer

A high-mobility diketopyrrolopyrrole-based copolymer (P) was employed in compact layer free CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells as a hole-transporting layer (HTL). By using the P-HTL, the 6.62% device efficiency with conventional poly-3-hexylthiophene was increased to 10.80% in the simple device configuration (ITO/CH3NH3PbI3/HTL/MoO3/Ag). With improved short circuit current density, open circuit voltage, and fill factor, the higher power conversion efficiency of P-HTL device is ascribed to the higher carrier mobility, more suitable energy level, and lower interfacial charge recombination. Advantages of applying P-HTL to perovskite solar cells, such as low cost, low-temperature processing, and excellent performance with simple cell structure, exhibit a possibility for commercial applications.

Efficient inverted planar formamidinium lead iodide perovskite solar cells via a post improved perovskite layer

In this paper, we demonstrate an optimised formamidinium iodide/isopropyl alcohol (FAI/IPA) modification procedure to improve the photoactive layer for efficient inverted planar FAPbI₃ PSCs.
