[Prevalence and risk factors of hypertension among residents of 30 years or above years old in Pengzhou city of Sichuan province]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension among residents in Pengzhou city of Sichuan province.

METHODS

Among 20 townships in Pengzhou city of Sichuan Province, 14 townships were selected using a clustered sampling based on the economic level and distance. The registered residents in the selected townships aged 30-79 years were recruited for a comprehensive survey from 2004 to 2007. A total of 55 687 residents (21 315 males and 34 372 females) were selected based on a face to face questionnaire interview and physical examination; the patient group included 14 151 residents with hypertension and the control group had 41 536 residents without hypertension were selected. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to investigate the influence factors for hypertension. OR (95%CI) values were calculated. Different levels of risk exposure factors were transformed into the risk scores using a statistical model.

RESULTS

The prevalence rate of hypertension was 25.41% among residents aged 30 years or above in Pengzhou (14 151/55 687), 28.95% (6 170/21 315) for male residents and 23.22% (7 981/34 372) for female residents. Multivaraite logistic regression analysis showed that main risk factors for hypertension in male residents were age, low educational level, widower, low household income, no medical insurance, no fresh fruits intake, high body mass index (BMI), high waist to hip ratio, and low physical activity, which was less than 3 metabolic equivalent of task (MET) level, among which the highest three riskswere (not including the social demographic characteristics) BMI≥28 kg/m(2), waist to hip ratio ≥0.90, and not consuming fresh fruits. OR (95% CI) values for these three key factors were 3.74 (3.27-4.28), 1.34 (1.24-1.44), and 1.27 (1.14-1.41), respectively. The corresponding risk scores for these factors were 2.993, 1.102, and 1.237, respectively. Main risk factors for hypertension in female residents were age, working hours, no medical insurance, fewer number of family members, no fresh fruits intake, smoking, never drinking tea, no dairy products intake, high BMI, highwaist to hip ratio and low physical activity, among which the highest three risks were (not including the social demographic characteristics) BMI ≥28 kg/m(2), MET level, and waist to hip ratio ≥0.85. OR (95% CI) values for these three key factors were 3.30 (3.02-3.60), 1.35 (1.22-1.51), and 1.33 (1.23-1.44), respectively. The corresponding risk scores for these factors were 2.390, 1.263, and 1.051, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence rate of hypertension among the residents over 30 years of age in Pengzhou city was 25.41%. The main risk factors were age, not consuming fresh fruits, high BMI, high waist to hip ratio, and low MET level.

CTL- vs Treg lymphocyte-attracting chemokines, CCL4 and CCL20, are strong reciprocal predictive markers for survival of patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Tumoural infiltration of T lymphocytes is determined by local patterns of specific chemokine expression. In this report, we examined the roles of CCL4 and CCL20 in the accumulation of CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and regulatory T (Treg) lymphocytes in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and determined the correlations between chemokine expressions and ESCC patients' survival.

METHODS

Reverse transcriptase-PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining were performed to examine the expressions of interested genes. Flow cytometry was adopted to check the expressions of CCL4- and CCL6-specific receptors, CCR5 and CCR6, on CTLs and Treg cells. In addition, transwell assay was carried on.

RESULTS

The CCL4 expression was significantly correlated with the expression of CTL markers (CD8 and Granzyme B), whereas CCL20 was positively correlated with Treg markers (FoxP3 and IL-10). Consistently, CCR5 was found to be mainly expressed on CD8(+) T lymphocytes, while CCR6 showed prevalence on Treg lymphocytes and the frequencies of CCR5(+)CD8(+) CTLs and CCR6(+) Treg cells were higher in TIL compared with PBMC. Respectively, CCL4 and CCL20 recruited CD8(+) and regulatory T cells in vitro. Importantly, high levels of CCL4 in the lesions of ESCC patients predicted prolonged survival. Furthermore, CCL4(high)/CCL20(low) group demonstrated better overall survival, whereas CCL4(low)/CCL20(low) and CCL4(low)/CCL20(high) groups showed the worst overall survival.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data showed that CCL4 and CCL20 recruit functionally different T lymphocyte subsets into oesophageal carcinoma, indicating CCL4 and CCL20 are potential predictors of ESCC patients' survival.

Multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption: a case report

AIM

To report a severe and rare case of multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption (MICRR) in an adult female.

SUMMARY

A healthy 27-year-old Chinese female, with no significant associated factors, presented with MICRR. Resorption progressed quickly and lesions varied in severity, involving 29 teeth and leading to the loss of 23 teeth over a period of only 3 years. The inner surface of the crown showed extensive areas with worm-eaten lacunar resorption, and the resorptive lesions had abundant lysosomes throughout their cytoplasm. Further, heavy deposits of reaction products were shown in variously sized lysosomes.

Clinical application of three-dimensional reconstruction and rapid prototyping technology of multislice spiral computed tomography angiography for the repair of ventricular septal defect of tetralogy of Fallot

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and rapid prototyping technology (RPT) of multislice spiral computed tomography angiography (CTA) was applied to prepare physical models of the heart and ventricular septal defects of tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) patients in order to explore their applications in the diagnosis and treatment of this complex heart disease. CTA data of 35 ToF patients were collected to prepare l:l 3D solid models using digital 3D reconstruction and RPT, and the resultant models were used intraoperatively as reference. The operations of all 35 patients were completed under the guidance of the 3D solid model, without difficulty. Intraoperative findings of the patients were consistent with the morphological and size changes of the 3D solid model, and no significant differences were found between the patches obtained from the 3D solid model and the actual intraoperative measurements (t = 0.83, P = 0.412). 3D reconstruction and RPT of multislice spiral CTA can accurately and intuitively reflect the anatomy of ventricular septal defects in ToF patients, providing the foundation for a solid model of the complex congenital heart.

[Advances in psychosocial interventions on quality of life of cancer survivors]

In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of psychosocial interventions' studies on quality of life in cancer survivors because of improving cancer survival rate. This paper was an integrative literatures review of various psychosocial interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, group-based supportive therapy, counseling or psychotherapy, education or psychoeducation and music therapy et al, and analyzing the complexity of psychosocial interventions' RCTs in oncology and the current characteristic of these studies in China.

First Report of Dickeya solani Causing Soft Rot in Imported Bulbs of Hyacinthus orientalis in China

A bacterial pathogen, Dickeya solani, emerged as a major threat to potato (Solanum tuberosum) production in Europe in 2004 and has spread to many potato-growing regions via international trade. In December 2013, soft rot symptoms were observed in hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) bulbs imported from the Netherlands into China at Ningbo Port. Diseased bulbs gave off an offensive odor. The base and internal parts of diseased bulbs rotted, and the margins of diseased tissues showed brown discoloration. Isolation on nutrient agar glucose (NAG) medium resulted in dominating colonies of characteristic "fried egg" morphology (1). One colony was chosen for further investigation and tentatively named "isolate 6165-3." Under microscopic visualization after gram stain, the cells of isolate 6165-3 were gram-negative, motile, and rod shaped. The isolate was then identified as a member of genus Dickeya using the Biolog GN microplate. The 16S rRNA, recA, and dnaX sequences of isolate 6165-3 were subsequently determined and deposited in GenBank with accession numbers KM405240, KM405241, and KM405242, sharing 99% (16S rRNA), 100% (recA), and 100% (dnaX) nucleotide identity with those of known D. solani isolates, respectively. By this means, the isolate 6165-3 was identified as D. solani (1,2). To confirm the pathogenicity of the isolate, four plants each of 30-day-old hyacinth, 14-day-old potato, and 60-day-old moth orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis) were inoculated with suspensions of the isolate with a concentration of 10⁸ CFU/ml in sterile water by stabbing. Plants were incubated in a climate chamber at 28°C during the day and 24°C during the night with a relative humidity of 93% and a photoperiod of 12/12 h. Plants inoculated with sterile water were included as negative controls. After 2 or 3 days, typical symptoms such as water-soaked lesions and soft rot developed around the inoculation point, while the negative controls remained symptomless. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by re-isolating bacteria from lesions, which had identical sequence and morphology characters with the inoculated isolate. This is the first report of intercepted D. solani on hyacinth bulbs imported from the Netherlands into China, indicating that D. solani can spread via hyacinth. [Associations between vegetables and fruit intake and quality of life in breast cancer patients]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the associations between vegetables and fruit intake and quality of life in breast cancer patients.

METHODS

A total of 3 344 community breast cancer patients were selected through cluster sampling method between April and July 2013, in Shanghai, China. Data were collected using a questionnaire, which included socio-demographic situation, cancer survival and health behaviors(i.e. vegetables or fruit intake, exercise), European Organization for Research and Treatment (EORTC) QLQ-C30 Simplified Chinese version(3rd edition) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy scale (FACT-G) Simplified Chinese version(4th edition) were used to evaluate the quality of life. Crude quality of life scores were compared between groups. Multiple linear models were used to calculate and compare adjusted means of quality of life between groups, controlling relevant factors.

RESULTS

After adjusting relevant factors, breast cancer patients who ate more than 250 g vegetables reported higher EORTC physical functioning scores, cognitive functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, global health scores than patients who ate equal or less than 250 g vegetables(respectively (80.79 ± 0.85) vs (79.34 ± 0.82), (80.07 ± 1.03) vs (77.84 ± 0.99), (84.17 ± 0.95) vs (82.76 ± 0.92), (65.75 ± 1.50) vs (62.92 ± 1.45)), t values respectively were 2.76, 3.54, 2.40, 3.17, all P values were <0.05; and breast cancer patients who ate more than 250 g vegetables reported higher FACT-G social well-being scores, function well-being scores, FACT-G total scores than patients who ate equal or less than 250 g vegetables (respectively (17.92 ± 0.40) vs (17.31 ± 0.39), (14.86 ± 0.42) vs (14.34 ± 0.40), (74.78 ± 1.01) vs (73.05 ± 0.97)), t values respectively were 2.49, 2.05, 2.90, all P values were <0.05. After adjusting relevant factors, breast cancer patients who ate fruit everyday reported higher EORTC physical functioning scores, role functioning scores, cognitive functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, social functioning scores, global health scores than patients who didn't eat fruit everyday (respectively (80.40 ± 0.82) vs (79.22 ± 0.87), (89.81 ± 1.00) vs (88.06 ± 1.05), (79.78 ± 0.99) vs (77.11 ± 1.04), (84.43 ± 0.92) vs (81.56 ± 0.97), (77.95 ± 1.25) vs (75.56 ± 1.31), (65.48 ± 1.44) vs (61.74 ± 1.51)), t values respectively were 2.15, 2.64, 4.07, 4.71, 2.89, 4.02, all P values were <0.05; and breast cancer patients who ate fruit everyday reported higher FACT-G physical well-being scores, social well-being scores, emotional well-being scores, functional well-being scores, FACT-G total scores than patients who didn't eat fruit everyday(respectively (23.35 ± 0.26) vs (22.85 ± 0.28), (17.91 ± 0.39) vs (16.98 ± 0.41), (18.59 ± 0.22) vs (18.18 ± 0.23), (14.79 ± 0.40) vs (14.17 ± 0.42), (74.71 ± 0.97) vs (72.17 ± 1.02)), t values respectively were 2.92, 3.65, 2.91, 2.35, 4.05 , all P values were <0.05.

CONCLUSION

There are active associations between vegetables / fruit intake and quality of life in breast cancer patients. Proper diet may help improve quality of life in breast cancer patients.

[Associations between physical exercise and quality of life in breast cancer patients]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the associations between physical exercise and quality of life in breast cancer patients.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3 344 community breast cancer patients between April and July 2013 in Shanghai, China. Among a total of 3 344 breast cancer patients, the patients doing exercise reported significantly higher EORTC physical functioning scores, role functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, global health scores, and FACT-G physical well-being scores, social well-being scores, emotional well-being scores, functional well-being scores, and FACT-G total scores than the patients who didn't take exercise (P < 0.05, P(Adjusted)<0.05) . Breast cancer patients who did exercise more than or equal to 5 times/week reported significantly higher EORTC role functioning scores, cognitive functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, global health scores and FACT-G physical well-being scores, functional well-being scores, and FACT-G total scores than patients who did exercise less than 5 times/week (P < 0.05, P(Adjusted)<0.05 ).

CONCLUSIONS

There are active associations between physical exercise and quality of life in breast cancer patients. Engagement in physical exercise is beneficial to breast cancer patients with long-term survival.

[Program optimization in the stage treatment of periarthritis of shoulder with acupuncture, moxibustion and positive functional exercise]

OBJECTIVE

To optimize the therapeutic programs for periarthritis of shoulder treated with acupuncture, moxibustion and kinetohterapy with orthogonal design method adopted.

METHODS

The orthogonal design table of L8 (2(7)) hierarchical principle was used to randomly divide 192 patients of periarthritis of shoulder into 8 groups, 24 cases in each one. Separately, 4 factors and each different 2 levels were adopted in treatment, named acupuncture timing (factor A: A, acute stage, A2 adhesion stage), acupoint combination (factor B: B, local acupoints, B2 local acupoints and distal acupoints along meridians), filiform needling and warm needling therapy (factor C: C1 acupuncture with filiform needle, CZ acupuncture with filiform needle and warm needling therapy) and positive functional exercise (factor D: D1 without positive functional exercise, D2 with positive functional exercise). The treatment was given once a day, 10 treatments made one session and 2 sessions were required totally. The time points of observation were the point after 1 session of treatment and after 2 sessions of treatment. The short-form McGill pain questionnaire (MPQ) and shoulder joint motor disturbance score were adopted for evaluation.

RESULTS

In the orthogonal design analysis, taking the hierarchical factors into consideration, the age was considered as the main factor in the evaluation of shoulder pain and shoulder motor disturbance (P<0.01), and the shoulder function grade apparently impacted pain evaluation and the efficacy on shoulder motor disturbance (P<0.01). The best combination of 4 factors and 2 levels were A1B1CzD2 and A2BC2D2. SAS statistical analysis showed that at acute stage and adhesion stage, CZ Dz , meaning acupuncture with fifiform needling and warm needling therapy combined with positive functional exercise, is the main factor of the improvements of shoulder motor function (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

For periarthritis of shoulder at acute stage, the combined therapy of acupuncture at local acupoints, warm needling and positive functional exercise is adopted. At chronic stage, the combined therapy of acupuncture at local acupoints and distal acupoints, acupuncture with filiform needle and warm needling and positive functional exercise is the best program. Additionally, in clinical treatment, the patients' age, sex, shoulder joint function and duration of treatment should be considered comprehensively for the impacts on the efficacy.

Self-seeding-based 10Gb/s over 25km optical OFDM transmissions utilizing face-to-face dual-RSOAs at gain saturation

Self-seeded passive optical networks (PONs) are currently attracting extensive research interest. In this paper, a novel self-seeded PON transmitter is, for the first time, proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which incorporates two face-to-face-positioned reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) operating at their gain saturation regions: one RSOA directly driven by an upstream electrical signal and the other RSOA biased at a fixed current. Detailed experimental explorations are undertaken of the dynamic performance characteristics of the proposed transmitter. It is shown that, in comparison with previously reported self-seeded transmitters each employing a reflective mirror and a single electrical signal-driven RSOA, the proposed transmitter has a number of salient advantages including, considerably narrowed optical signal spectra, up to 16dB reduction in RINs of intensity-modulated optical signals, and residual intensity modulation crosstalk suppression as high as 10.7dB. The aforementioned features enable experimental demonstrations of real-time self-seeded 10Gb/s optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmitters. In particular, by making use of two low-cost RSOAs having their 3-dB modulation bandwidths as small as 1.125GHz, 10Gb/s over 25km adaptive OOFDM transmissions with power penalties of 0.6dB are experimentally achieved in the simple self-seeded IMDD PON systems.

Biosorption of antimony(V) onto Fe(III)-treated aerobic granules

Iron precipitate was produced with 0.1M FeCl3 and bound with the amino or hydroxyl groups of the granules surface, accompanied with removal of Ca, Mg, K and Na from the biomass matrix. The Fe(III)-treated granules exhibited much higher adsorption capacity of antimony(V) than the untreated granules, peaked at pH 3.4 at a maximum capacity of 22.6 mg g(-1) of dry mass. The intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion resistances controlled the Sb(V) adsorption onto the Fe(III)-treated granules. Fe(III) treatment is a cost-effective and easy-to-implement process to modify the surface of aerobic granules to enhance their adsorption capacity to Sb(V).

[Effect of Kruppel like factor 4 gene silencing on apoptosis and phagocytosis of murine RAW264.7 macrophages]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of down-regulation of Kruppel like factor 4 (KLF4) by RNA interference on proliferation, apoptosis and phagocytosis in murine RAW264.7 macrophage cell line.

METHODS

Stable KLF4 silencing in RAW264.7 cells was achieved by recombinant shRNA plasmid targeting murine KLF4 gene via liposome mediated transfection, followed by G418 selection. The efficacy of KLF4 silencing in G418 resistant cells was verified by fluorescent microcopy and Western blotting, respectively. Proliferative activity was analyzed by CCK-8 assay. Apoptosis and phagocytosis were evaluated by annexinV-FITC/PI staining and flow cytometry with assistant use of fluorescein-labeled E.coli K-12 particles, respectively.

RESULTS

KLF4 protein expression was significantly down-regulated by the recombinant shRNA plasmid as compared with negative control (NC) plasmid transfection, inhibition rate being over 76%. From the third day, KLF4-silencing cells exhibited lower proliferative activity as compared with NC RAW264.7 cells (P<0.05). In resting state, apoptosis rate in wide type, NC and KLF4-silencing cells were 1.73%, 6.85% and 12.76%, respectively, and KLF4-silencing resulted in a statistical difference in apoptosis as compared with NC cells (P<0.05). Finally, phagocytic capability in wide type, NC and KLF4-silencing cells revealed by the mean fluorescence intensity of engulfed FITC-labeled E.coli particles were 122.0 ± 2.80, 48.97 ± 5.69 and 80.10 ± 4.61, respectively, and compared with NC cells, KLF4-silencing cells had a significant increase in phagocytosis (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

KLF4 gene silencing inhibits RAW264.7 macrophage proliferation, increase apoptosis and enhance phagocytic function in resting state, which provides a novel tool for revealing the role of KLF4 in macrophage immunity.

Retrieving quasi-phase-matching structure with discrete layer-peeling method

An approach to reconstruct a quasi-phase-matching grating by using a discrete layer-peeling algorithm is presented. Experimentally measured output spectra of Šolc-type filters, based on uniform and chirped QPM structures, are used in the discrete layer-peeling algorithm. The reconstructed QPM structures are in agreement with the exact structures used in the experiment and the method is verified to be accurate and efficient in quality inspection on quasi-phase-matching grating.

Meta-analysis: the use of carbon dioxide insufflation vs. room air insufflation for gastrointestinal endoscopy

BACKGROUND

Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) insufflation has been proposed as an alternative to air insufflation to distend the lumen in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy.

AIM

To perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in which CO(2) insufflation was compared with room air insufflation in GI endoscopy.

METHODS

Electronic and manual searches were combined to search RCTs. After methodological quality assessment and data extraction, the efficacy and safety of CO(2) insufflation were systematically assessed.

RESULTS

Twenty-one RCTs [13 on colonoscopy, four on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), two on double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE), one on oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, and one on flexible sigmoidoscopy] were identified. For colonoscopy, CO(2) insufflation resulted lower postprocedural pain intensity, and increased the proportion of patient without pain at 1 h (RR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.37-2.47) and 6 h (RR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.14-1.44) postprocedure. For ERCP, the pain-releasing effect of CO(2) insufflation was not obvious (SMD: -1.48, 95% CI: -3.56, 0.59). CO(2) insufflation revealed no consistent advantages in the RCTs of DBE, but was shown as safe as air insufflation in oesophagus/stomach endoscopic submucosal dissection in one study. pCO(2) level showed no significant variation during these procedures.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with air insufflation, CO(2) insufflation during colonoscopy causes lower postprocedural pain and bowel distension without significant pCO(2) variation. More RCTs are needed to assess its advantages in other GI endoscopic procedures.

Multiple variants of TERT and CLPTM1L constitute risk factors for lung adenocarcinoma

Recent studies have shown that 5p15.33 is one of the chromosomal regions that is most consistently altered in lung cancer; common variants that are located in this region have been genotyped in various populations. However, the genetic contribution of these variants to carcinogenesis is relatively unknown. A clinic-based case-control study in Shanghai was undertaken on 196 patients with lung cancer and 229 healthy individuals. TERT rs2736100 and CLPTM1L rs401681 and rs402710 were genotyped using the ABI TaqMan Allelic Discrimination assay. For rs2736100, the G variant and the GG genotype were more frequent, whereas the TT genotype was less frequent in patients with lung adenocarcinoma than in controls. The CT genotype at rs401681 was more common and the TT genotype was rare in patients, and the differences were significant between lung adenocarcinoma patients and controls. This was also true for rs402710. Moreover, the frequency of the GGCTCT haplotype was higher and the TTTTTT frequency was lower in patients, especially those with lung adenocarcinoma. Aberrant linkage disequilibrium among the three SNPs was found in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. We conclude that multiple variants at 5p15.33 contribute to susceptibility to lung adenocarcinoma.

[The clinical study of modified total aortic arch replacement and stent elephant trunk technique treatment for patients with DeBakey I thoracic aortic dissection]

OBJECTIVE

To summarize the clinical study of modified total aortic arch replacement and stent elephant trunk technique treatment to patients with DeBakey I thoracic aortic dissection.

METHODS

From January 2006 to October 2010, 101 cases of DeBakey I aortic dissection were treated by modified total arch replacement and stent elephant trunk technique, in which emergency surgery for 73 cases. There were 76 male and 25 female patients, aged from 21 to 77 years with a mean of (49 ± 8) years. Intraoperative ascending aortic replacement in 31 cases, Bentall procedure in 29 cases, Wheat procedure in 7 cases, David procedure in 34 cases. At the same time stent elephant trunk in the left subclavian artery corresponding position was windowed to rebuild the blood supply. Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest cerebral protection was completed by bilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion.

RESULTS

The mean cardiopulmonary bypass time was (212 ± 40) min, mean myocardial occlusion time was (95 ± 16) min, mean circulatory arrest time was (42 ± 8) min. Operative mortality was 1 case and hospital mortality was 5 case, which died of septicemia, acute renal failure and hemiplegia complicated with multiple organ failure. Compared with selective cerebral perfusion, the incidence of postoperative cerebral vascular accident and transient neurological dysfunction decreased. Seventy-six cases received aorta CTA before discharged, the closure rate of descending thoracic aortic dissection false lumen was 78.9%. Seventy-one patients were followed up for 5 to 49 months, 50 cases was reviewed by CTA, of which closure rate of descending thoracic aortic dissection false lumen was 88.0%, no late death and re-surgery.

CONCLUSIONS

The modified total aortic arch replacement and stent elephant trunk technique treatment for patients with DeBakey I thoracic aortic dissection was safe and effective, with less postoperative complications.

Research on the application of horseradish peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide to the oil removal of oily water

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has the advantages of low cost, obtaining convenience, broad substrate specificity, etc, so it may be a suitable kind of enzyme to remove dilute emulsified oil and dissolved oil from water. The effect factors of the oil removal using HRP, such as pH, concentrations of HRP and H2O2, additives, Fe2+ ion, temperature and reaction time were researched. When the initial oil concentration was 120 mg/L, the remaining oil concentrations of the synthetic oily water and an actual oily wastewater reached 24.83 mg/L and 21.30 mg/L, respectively. The treatment of oily water using HRP and H2O2 is feasible. It has good application prospects.

The effects of SOCS-1 on liver endotoxin tolerance development induced by a low dose of lipopolysaccharide are related to dampen NF-kappaB-mediated pathway

BACKGROUND

Endotoxin tolerance is an important mechanism to maintain the homeostasis of liver. It was reported that suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 was a negative regulator of lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophages activation, however, the mechanism underlying endotoxin tolerance and suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 has not been fully elucidated.

AIM

Our aim here is to clarify whether suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 was involved in the mechanisms of endotoxin tolerance in liver through dampening nuclear factor-kappaB-mediated pathway.

METHODS

Endotoxin tolerance models of C57BL/6J mice and isolated Kupffer cells were established by pretreating them with a low dose of lipopolysaccharide to observe the changes of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 expression during endotoxin tolerance inducement. Moreover, a vector-based short hairpin RNA expression system was used to specifically inhibit suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 expression in RAW264.7 macrophage cells to further explore the role of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 in endotoxin tolerance inducement. The expression of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 was analysed by immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. The responses to lipopolysaccharide were assessed by the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB and the production of tumour necrosis factor-alpha, which were analysed by ELISA.

RESULTS

The histopathologic changes in the liver of the non-endotoxin tolerance group were more serious than those of the endotoxin tolerance group. The phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells were depressed and suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 expression in the endotoxin tolerance group obviously increased. Endotoxin tolerance also led to a hyporesponse of Kupffer cells to lipopolysaccharide with less activation of nuclear factor-kappaB, less production of tumour necrosis factor-alpha and more expression of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 than those of non-endotoxin tolerance group. Moreover, the inhibitive effect was partly refracted in pSOCS-1-short hairpin RNA transfected RAW264.7 cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Endotoxin tolerance induced by lipopolysaccharide pretreatment was accompanied with upregulation of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 and the silence of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 by RNA interference obviously attenuated this inhibitive effect, indicating that the absence of suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 caused abnormal enhancement of inflammatory cytokine production and suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 was involved in endotoxin tolerance inducement through dampening nuclear factor-kappaB-mediated pathway. Therefore, suppressors of cytokine signalling-1 may be a new target for the clinical treatment of sepsis.

N-doped SiO2/TiO2 mesoporous nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation

Mesoporous nanocrystalline N-doped SiO2/TiO2 visible-light photocatalysts were prepared by treating SiO2/TiO2 xerogels in a flow of nitrogen gas bubbled through concentrated ammonia solution. Structural characterization and performance analysis results revealed that the addition of SiO2 remarkably altered the phase composition, specific surface area, microstructure, as well as the photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2. The presence of SiO2 in N-doped TiO2 particles suppressed the formation of rutile phase and the crystal growth of N-doped TiO2 particles during thermal calcinations. When weight ratio of SiO2/TiO2 was in 0.05-0.20, the N-doped SiO2/TiO2 exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than the N-doped TiO2, and optimum ratio was found to be 0.05. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the higher specific area, larger pore volume, and more surface hydroxyl groups in the catalyst.

Effects of topography on simulated net primary productivity at landscape scale

Local topography significantly affects spatial variations of climatic variables and soil water movement in complex terrain. Therefore, the distribution and productivity of ecosystems are closely linked to topography. Using a coupled terrestrial carbon and hydrological model (BEPS-TerrainLab model), the topographic effects on the net primary productivity (NPP) are analyzed through four modelling experiments for a 5700 km(2) area in Baohe River basin, Shaanxi Province, northwest of China. The model was able to capture 81% of the variability in NPP estimated from tree rings, with a mean relative error of 3.1%. The average NPP in 2003 for the study area was 741 gCm(-2)yr(-1) from a model run including topographic effects on the distributions of climate variables and lateral flow of ground water. Topography has considerable effect on NPP, which peaks near 1350 m above the sea level. An elevation increase of 100 m above this level reduces the average annual NPP by about 25 gCm(-2). The terrain aspect gives rise to a NPP change of 5% for forests located below 1900 m as a result of its influence on incident solar radiation. For the whole study area, a simulation totally excluding topographic effects on the distributions of climatic variables and ground water movement overestimated the average NPP by 5%.
