Abstract
Although many antimicrobial agents have been reported to cause immunosuppression in animals, macrolide antibiotics enhance immune function. Tylosin is a macrolide antibiotic approved for the control of mycoplasmosis in poultry. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of tylosin on cellular immune functions in chickens. There was no significant difference in adherent splenocyte chemotaxis between tylosin-treated and untreated (control) chickens. Tylosin increased splenocyte proliferation and splenocyte conditioned medium (CM) proliferative activity above control levels. Removal of adherent splenocytes before preparation of CM caused a reduction in CM proliferative activity. Tylosin also increased antitumor activity of splenocytes. These data are the first to suggest that the macrolide antibiotic, tylosin tartrate, has a modulatory effect in chickens on the immune parameters studied.

Abstract
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) with electronic medical equipment by the handsets of mobile telephones is a well documented problem in hospitals. To gain information about how to build an EMI-free hospital and how to make rooms safe for mobile telephone handset use in the hospital building the authors measured the shielding capacities of a concrete wall, concrete blocks, a steel door, and steel-surfaced partition panels. The shielding capacities of these materials were 2-7 dB for the concrete wall, 6-8 dB for the concrete blocks, 19-27 dB for the steel door, and 20-37 dB for the steel-surfaced partition panels. These results indicate that care should be taken to shield electronic equipment from signals coming from neighboring rooms and from those under and above any patient room in which such equipment is in use. Electricity-conductive paint, electricity-conductive wallpaper, and electricity-conductive cloth are examples of inexpensive materials that can increase shielding capacity.

Abstract
While many antimicrobial agents have been reported to cause immunosuppression in animals, macrolide antibiotics enhance the immune function. Tylosin tartrate is a macrolide antibiotic approved for the control of mycoplasmosis in poultry. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of tylosin on the humoral immune functions in chickens. Three days after oral tylosin tartrate administration, 4- or 8-week-old chickens were immunized intravenously with carbolic acid-killed Brucella abortus bacterin or sheep red blood cells. Seven days (plasma antibodies titre) or 4 days (antibody forming cells) post-immunization, there was a significant increase in antibody production as well as in the numbers of antibody-producing cells in tylosin tartrate-administered chickens compared with the untreated controls. However, 3 days after tylosin tartrate administration, there was no difference in the distribution of T-lymphocyte subpopulations (CD4 or CD8 positive cells) or B lymphocytes (surface immunoglobulin positive cells) in either the peripheral blood or spleens or untreated control chickens.

Abstract
The purpose of our study was to identify risk factors for low birthweight (LBW; birthweight < 2500 g) in Japanese infants. The data was collected from questionnaires completed by the parents of 23132 infants who underwent a standardized well baby check-up for 1-month-old infants, conducted by the Fukuoka City Medical Association from 1987 to 1995. The following eight factors and their second-order interaction terms were examined as potential risk factors for LBW: maternal age at delivery, history of live-born LBW infant, history of abortion in previous pregnancies, maternal smoking, coffee and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, prenatal training and live birth order. The results of multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the following three factors and one interaction term significantly contributed to LBW: history of live born LBW infant, maternal smoking, live birth order and the interaction between maternal smoking and live birth order. The smoker-related risk for LBW was quite different in each of the three groups stratified by live birth order. Efforts should be made, for example, to increase the accessibility of early, high-quality prenatal care for the high-risk groups with previous LBW babies and to implement smoking intervention, ranging from specific medical procedures to broad-scale public health and health-related educational programs in schools.

Abstract
We have defined extended HLA haplotypes including the HLA class II genes, the non-HLA genes such as TAP1, TAP2 and LMP2, and the (CTG)n microsatellite repeats within the NOTCH4 gene between DRA and 21OH in 33 Japanese HLA homozygous typing cells (HTC). These conserved haplotypes characterized by unique linkage might be maintained as a result of functional co-operation among them in the antigen presentation pathway. These HTCs can be served as an original and ethnic-specific standard panel, providing useful genetic markers in haplotypic diversity, disease association, and anthropology studies.

Abstract
Statistical evaluation of clinical treatments or preventive medicine has profoundly contributed to decision making in medical fields such as with the acceptance of new treatment methods and health promotion policies. It is crucial in such decision making to find a correct statistical model to treat a surprisingly large variety of patients, or a heterogeneous group of patients, even with the same diagnosis. In diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes, patients are often followed up to certain endpoints and these data are frequently analyzed by logrank tests or Cox-models to evaluate treatment effects. Although these methods have been widely accepted and extensively studied, we are sometimes faced with problems in applying these methods when the heterogeneity of patients is large and a lot of prognostic factors affecting the endpoints have to be considered. Based on the results of the analyses of survival data from more than 6,000 gastric cancer patients, it is revealed that the stratified logrank test may suffer serious power loss, even though primary prognostic factors are used as stratified factors. A so-called 'piecewise linear Cox regression method' for properly treating the heterogeneity of patients is introduced and extensively studied. This method is shown to be appropriate for patient groups with a high degree of heterogeneity such as the gastric cancer patients. The same method is, in principle, applicable to patients of other diseases, too, using statistical software such as SAS, BMDP and etc.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish the blood pressure (BP) measurement protocol for Japanese preschool children, systolic BP (K1) and diastolic BP (K4, K5) were measured along with anthropometric values. METHODOLOGY Commercially available mercury sphygmomanometers were used. In the first group of children (group A), BP was measured in 79 boys and 85 girls using a cuff 9 cm wide and 23 cm long. In the second group (group B), the length and circumference of the upper right arm of 147 boys and 139 girls were measured to select cuffs appropriate for their sizes. Blood pressure measurements were performed twice on the right arm of the children in the seated position at a mean interval of 5 min. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the anthropometric values (height, bodyweight, body mass index [BMI], length and circumference of the upper arm) between groups A and B. The BP values at K1, K4 and K5 in the first measurement of group B were 91 +/- 9, 54 +/- 8, and 48 +/- 10 mmHg (boys) and 90 +/- 9, 54 +/- 8, and 48 +/- 12 mmHg (girls), respectively. There were no significant differences between the first and second measurements in both groups, however, there were significant differences in the first and second measurements of K4 between groups A and B. Multiple regression analysis by the stepwise method revealed a strong correlation between K1 and the length of the upper arm in the boys and the bodyweight in the girls: between K4 and the bodyweight in the boys and the BMI in the girls, and between K5 and the height in the boys and the upper arm circumference in the girls. CONCLUSIONS From these results it would appear that a single measurement is sufficient under appropriate measurement conditions such as rest before measurement and the choice of the cuff size according to the upper arm circumference, and that BP is closely correlated with the anthropometric values in preschool children.

Abstract
The cDNA for vitellogenin (Vg) of the parasitoid wasp Pimpla nipponica (Hymenoptera: Apocrita) was cloned and sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence with 1807 residues was obtained. The N-terminal 20 amino acids chemically determined for vitellin (Vn) agreed completely with the deduced 20 amino acids that follow the 16 amino acid residues for putative signal peptide. The cDNA clone for the Vg of the turnip sawfly Athalia rosae (Hymenoptera: Symphyta), previously obtained and partially sequenced, was also completely sequenced and the amino acid sequence deduced. Amino acid sequences were compared between these two species and also with known Vg sequences from other insects. Common to all these insects is the presence of two long regions with relatively well-conserved amino acid sequences, one near the N-terminal extending 267-282 residues (including two cysteines at conserved locations), and the other starting at position 450 to 655 and extending 279-283 residues, and of a region at the C-terminal extending some 200 residues (about 250 in Aedes aegypti due to the presence of a serine-rich stretch) with 10 cysteines at conserved locations. A molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest that cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukins (ILs) are capable of modulating cardiovascular function and that drugs used in the treatment of heart failure have various modulatory effects on the production of cytokines. This study was performed to examine the effects of amiodarone (a drug shown to be beneficial in some patients suffering from heart failure) versus other antiarrhythmic agents on the production of cytokines in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were obtained from healthy volunteers. PBMC were cultured with 0.1, 1, and 10 micromol/L of amiodarone, quinidine, disopyramide, and lidocaine in the presence of lipopolysaccharide. After 24 hours' incubation, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6 were measured in the culture supernatants by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TNF-alpha production was inhibited by amiodarone but stimulated by quinidine in a concentration-dependent manner. Disopyramide and lidocaine tended to increase TNF-alpha production. IL-6 production was decreased by amiodarone in all concentrations but was increased significantly by disopyramide. Modulation of IL-1beta production by amiodarone was biphasic and significantly increased at a concentration of 10 micromol/L. CONCLUSIONS These previously unrecognized immunomodulatory effects of amiodarone may contribute to its beneficial effects in heart failure patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that cytokines are capable of modulating cardiovascular function and that some drugs used in the treatment of heart failure variably modulate the production of cytokines. To examine whether cardiac glycosides also modulate cytokine production, we evaluated the effects of ouabain on the production of cytokines in vitro and in vivo. METHODS AND RESULTS Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were obtained from healthy volunteers. PBMC were cultured with or without ouabain in the presence or absence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Ouabain induced the production of interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in PBMC and induced mRNA of these cytokines, an induction apparently at the transcriptional level. Amiloride, staurosporin, and genistein inhibited cytokine production, and protein kinase C and tyrosine kinase appeared to be involved in the modulation of cytokine production induced by ouabain. However, when PBMC were stimulated with LPS, ouabain suppressed the production of IL-6 and TNF-alpha. To investigate whether ouabain modulates cytokine production in vivo, we evaluated the effects of ouabain in LPS-treated mice. Ouabain was found to protect against LPS-induced lethal toxicity in mice and decreased circulating IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels in vivo. CONCLUSIONS These previously unrecognized immunomodulating effects of a cardiac glycoside may explain either the beneficial or the detrimental effects of these drugs in heart failure patients.

Abstract
SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) has recently become popular, as it makes working at home possible. Computers or Local Area Networks(LAN) connected to the office network from home are necessary for the implementation of this concept. Kyushu University has begun a service connecting home computers to the campus LAN for researchers, staff and students of the Faculty of Medicine. We have two different telephone connection methods. One connects the campus LAN and the home computer LAN using routers through the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). The other connects computers at home to the workstation in the university, using modems and the PPP (Point to Point Protocol) through a public telephone analog line. This paper outlines our university SOHO connection system and discusses the merits and demerits of using telephone line connections.

Abstract
We developed a query and analysis system for normal growth measurement of Japanese children on our WWW server using CGI. It has two subsystems. The first shows standard height and standard weight calculated by height. This subsystem can calculate the difference between measured height and the standard along with deviation and the ratio of measured weight to the standard weight. The second shows standard height, weight, head circumference, and chest circumference. This subsystem can calculate differences between the measurements and the standard as well as deviation. Because of the low amount of output required, very short turn-around time was required. This system also allows use of the same interface no matter which brand terminal is used and has wide reusability. This system will save doctors and nurses the difficulty of looking up a child's data, then having to make the calculation. We also compare the merits of CGI and Java.

Abstract
For many years, a common belief was that non-pulsatile perfusion produced physiological and circulatory abnormalities. Since 1977 our group has reported, if a 20% higher blood flow was used more than required for a pulsatile blood pump, there would be no circulatory or physiological abnormalities. These experimental findings confirmed that there was no difference in clinical outcome when using a pulsatile or non-pulsatile blood pump. Furthermore, the non-pulsatile rotary blood pump has demonstrated efficient and reliable performance in various clinical situations. The non-pulsatile blood pump is a simple and reliable design, that can be easily manufactured, and has the following desirable features. There is no need to incorporate heart valves, a large orifice inflow conduit, or a compliance volume-shifting chamber. Since an electrical motor operates continuously, the on-and-off motion required for a pulsatile pump is not necessary; therefore, it becomes a more efficient and durable system. Further, the control algorism is simpler and more reliable than a pulsatile pump. Considering these factors, the non-pulsatile blood pump can be selected for a permanently implantable assist device. To develop an implantable non-pulsatile cardiac device, it is necessary to incorporate seven features in the system such as: small size, atraumatic features, anti-thrombogenic features, anti-infection features, durable and simple design, and low energy requirement with easy controllability.

Abstract
The polychaete Pseudopotamilla occelata is the first animal revealed to contain high levels of vanadium besides ascidians. The present experiment disclosed that P. occelata has the same antigens with those in the ascidian Ascidia syndneiensis samea, which were recognized by two types of antibodies, a polyclonal antibody against vanadium-associated proteins extracted from blood cells and a monoclonal antibody against vanadocytes in the vanadium-rich ascidian A. sydneiensis samea. There is, therefore, a possibility that similar mechanism works on the accumulation of vanadium between the Polychaeta and the Ascididae.

Abstract
The serologically defined HLA-DR53 antigen is associated with HLA-DR4, -DR7, and -DR9 antigens, and these haplotypes contain two functional genes, DRB1 and DRB4, and two pseudogenes, DRB7 and DRB8. The DRB4 gene encodes the DR53 antigen, and has been officially recognized to contain three allelic variants (DRB4*0101, 0102, and 0103). In this study, we have established the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method for DRB4 genotyping and analyzed genetic polymorphism of the DRB4 gene in Japanese population. DRB4*0101, DRB4*0102, and DRB4*0103 could be observed at the frequencies of 0.5%, 1.1% and 32.7%, respectively. The same DRB1 allele does not necessarily share an identical DRB4 allele. Further, a tight linkage disequilibrium was found between DRB4*0102 and DRB1*0401 in Japanese population, whereas DRB1*0401 was associated with DRB4*0101 or *0103 in Caucasian population. These findings reveal extensive diversity of the HLA-DRB1 and -DRB4 haplotypes and may have important implications for HLA-disease associations and donor selection in unrelated transplantation.

Abstract
Ascidians are known to accumulate vanadium in their blood cells (vanadocytes) at extremely high levels which correspond to about 10(6) to 10(7) times the levels of vanadium ions in seawater. The route for the accumulation of vanadium ions from the outside environment into the blood system in ascidians has not yet been discovered. In the present experiments, using a combined technique of anion exchange column and atomic absorption spectrometry, we first extracted a vanadium-associated protein (VAP) from the blood cells of the ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis samea. VAP was estimated to associate with vanadium at an approximate ratio of 1 mol:16 mole. SDS-PAGE and a polyclonal antibody against VAP (anti-VAP) revealed that VAP is composed of at least two types of peptides estimated to be 12.5 kDa and 15 kDa with a minor peptide of 18 kDa and that VAP is localized in the cytoplasm of the vanadocytes.

Abstract
We studied the effects of various phosphodiesterase (PDE) III inhibitors: amrinone, pimobendan and vesnarinone: a PDE IV inhibitor (Ro 20-1724) and a PDE V inhibitor (E-4021) on the production of cytokines which have been shown to depress myocardial function. Recently developed inotropic agents which inhibit PDE III activity have produced short-term hemodynamic benefits in patients with advanced heart failure, but long-term treatment with these agents has an adverse effect on survival. However, vesnarinone, which has been shown to improve survival dramatically, has an immunomodulating effect and inhibits the production of cytokines. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from healthy human subjects were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and each PDE inhibitor was added. After 24 h of incubation, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) and IL-6 in the culture supernatants were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All three PDE III inhibitors, amrinone, pimobendan and vesnarinone, inhibited TNF-alpha production, but vesnarinone's inhibitory effect was the most prominent. Amrinone and pimobendan enhanced IL-1 beta production, whereas vesnarinone had no effect. Vesnarinone inhibited IL-6 production and pimobendan slightly decreased IL-6 production, whereas amrinone had no significant effect on IL-6 production. The PDE IV inhibitor, Ro 20-1724, decreased the production of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha and also tended to inhibit IL-6 production; its modulation of cytokine production was similar to the effects of vesnarinone. Because 8Br-cAMP or 8Br-cGMP did not suppress cytokine production, the modulating effects were not considered to result from an increase in cAMP or cGMP. Differential modulation of cytokine production may play a role in the therapeutic effect in heart failure patients who are treated with drugs that have PDE-inhibitory actions. It may be important to study whether the use of dual inhibitors of PDE III and PDE IV is therapeutically more useful for the treatment of heart failure due to their immunomodulating properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Outbreaks of multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus over eight years were investigated to prevent future endemic. METHODS Isolates of multiresistant S. aureus underwent a cluster analysis combined with canonical discriminant analysis using bacteriologic biotyping and sensitivity to 21 drugs. RESULTS Of a total of 786 strains recovered from 155 in-patients, the specialty surgical ward (SW) exhibited 470 isolates (59.8%) and the general SW 214 (27.2%). Among six clusters formed, four clusters were predominant in the general SW. An ordination diagram from the canonical discriminant analysis revealed a distribution in which clusters were localized temporally (year) and spatially (ward). A yearly shift of clusters indicated emergence of a new phenotype of multiresistant S. aureus. CONCLUSIONS The cluster analysis of isolates of multiresistant S. aureus using biotyping and sensitivity may supplement the classical method of tracing the spreading patterns of this microbe.

Abstract
Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disorder showing significant increases in the HLA-DRB1*11, *12, *14 and *08 alleles in the Japanese population. To evaluate the role of polymorphism in the DMA and DMB genes in predisposition to sarcoidosis, seventy Japanese patients with sarcoidosis and 95 unrelated healthy controls were analyzed in the third exon polymorphisms within the DMA and DMB genes by the PCR-RFLP method. There were no differences in the distribution of DMA alleles between the patient and control groups. The frequency of DMB*0102 was higher (p < 0.05) and that of DMB*0101 was lower (p < 0.05) in the patients than in the healthy controls. However, this association and negative association could be explained by linkage disequilibrium with the disease-associated DRB1 alleles. The DMA and DMB genes do not primarily confer the susceptibility to sarcoidosis.

Abstract
In the HLA-D region, one of the class II genes, DMA and DMB have been identified between the DQ and DP genes, and four allelic polymorphisms in each of the DMA (DMA*0101 approximately 0104) and DMB (DMB*0101 approximately 0104) genes have been so far recognized. Several recent studies suggested that the DM molecule is required for class II antigen presentation pathway especially by promoting the binding of antigenic peptides to the classical HLA class II molecule. In this study, we have analyzed genetic polymorphism and allelic variation of the DMB gene in a Japanese population by the direct DNA sequencing technique and also by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method, and could recognize DMB*0101 (49.3%), DMB*0102 (23.2%), DMB*0103 (23.2%), and DMB*0104 (0.4%). Further, a new DMB allele, DMB*0105 characterized by the presence of Val and Ile at two polymorphic sites, codons 144 and 179, respectively was identified. Strong linkage disequilibria were found between DMB*0101 and DRB1*0101, DPB1*0402 and DRB1*1502, and also between DMB*0103 and DRB1*1501 and DQB1*0602. HLA-DMB genotyping using the PCR-RFLP method established here will provide accurate evaluation of the effects of sequence allelism in the DMB gene on the HLA class II disease associations.

Abstract
Although some lymphatic plexuses exist in lower quadrants of the breast, there have been no investigations of whether or not carcinoma located in this region is a prognostic factor for breast cancer. Of 914 patients with carcinoma of the breast who underwent curative resection following chemo-endocrine therapy between 1982 and 1985, 149 patients had disease of the lower quadrants. The recurrence-free survival rate was lower in patients with the lower quadrants carcinoma than in those with carcinoma of other breast regions. Multivariate analysis showed that a lower quadrant tumor location was a significant prognostic factor for recurrence, especially soft tissue and visceral recurrence. The worse prognosis of patients with lower quadrant carcinoma of the breast suggests the possible existence of residual or occult tumor cells after surgical resection.

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia has been known to be an important factor in the development of atherosclelosis. Blood cholesterol screening and related health education in children, however, have not yet been widely practiced in Japan. From 1985 to 1990, blood samples were obtained from 5825 school children aged 6 to 14 years residing in Hisayama, Japan. The mean total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were determined. The mean TC levels ranged from 155 to 172 mg/dL for boys and from 156 to 170 mg/dL for girls, peaking at 9 years for both sexes. The TG levels also tended to increase gradually and to peak at 11 years for both sexes. The tendency for TG levels to be higher was much clearer than in US children and adolescents. The HDL-C levels were highest at 9 years of age for both sexes and the LDL-C levels also tended to peak at 9 years of age for boys and at 8 years of age for girls. Atherogenic Indices [(TC-HDL-C)/HDL-C] ranged from 1.7 to 1.9 for boys and 1.8 to 2.0 for girls. As the cholesterol level of Japanese children would be expected to rise steadily reflecting their westernized lifestyle, preventive programes on a nationwide base including health education at school environments should be emphasized.

Abstract
T-cell epitopes of Der p II, a major allergen of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, were analyzed by using human T-cell clones. We tested 38 cloned T cells from two Japanese patients with allergic rhinitis, and identified at least two peptides (K33-T47 and I58-C73) as helper T-cell epitopes. The former epitope was shown to be restricted by HLA-DRB1*1502, and the latter by HLA-DRB1*0405, both of which are typical Japanese HLA-DR alleles, suggesting that those T-cell epitopes might be important for the onset of house-dust mite allergy in the Japanese population. We prepared 15 analog peptides of the HLA- DRB1*1502-restricted 15-mer peptide. Of those 15 residues, five (F35, L37, A39, F41, and E42) were critical for the epitope activity, and three residues (F35, A39, and E42) seemed to be included in anchor motifs for HLA-DRB1*1502. The epitope peptide was also recognized by HLA-DRB1*1502-positive healthy donors; however, only allergic T cells showed Th2 functions. Antigen-presenting cells of nonallergic donors were able to activate allergic T cells to express Th2 function. This seemed to suggest that antigen recognition of T cells, as well as additional unknown factors which promote Th2, rather than Th1, responses, might be important for the onset of house-dust mite allergy.

Abstract
We compared the etiology and prognosis of liver cirrhosis in patients age 60 and older with that of patients under age 60 during the 1980s (1981-89, n = 207). Non-A, non-B hepatitis (NANB) was significantly more prevalent in the elderly (p < 0.05), and the mean age of NANB and alcoholic cirrhosis (Alc) were significantly older than those with hepatitis B virus (HBV) (p < 0.05). Evaluation using hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody also revealed significantly higher mean age of HCV (p < 0.05). Male patient was predominant in the younger patients than in the elderly patients. (M/F = 2.94 and 1.33, respectively) The estimated 5-year survival rate was 73.1% in the younger patients and 60.2% in the elderly patients (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that male sex, a lower serum albumin level, and the presence of the encephalopathy were significantly associated with poor prognosis in the elderly, while a lower serum cholinesterase level and a higher indocyanin green retention rate at 15 minutes (ICGR15) were significantly associated with poor prognosis in younger patients. However, causes of deaths were not significantly different between the younger patients and the elderly patients, the proportion of deaths unrelated to liver disease predominated in the elderly patients. Thus, the etiology and the prognostic factors of liver cirrhosis in elderly patients differ from those in younger patients.

Abstract
For the detection of anti-HLA antibody in the serum of patients receiving frequent platelet transfusions, we developed a new method in which platelet antigens are extracted into physiological saline containing 3% sucrose and coated as a layer on a U-type Terasaki plate. In the present study, screening of anti-HLA antibodies was conducted with this plate by the mixed passive hemagglutination test although the plate contained both HLA and HPA. The reactivity determined by this method correlated well with antihuman immunoglobulin-lymphocyte cytotoxicity test (AHG-LCT) results (r = 0.963). The plate can be preserved for at least 2 years at -80 degrees C and is easier to handle than the frozen lymphocyte panels used in the LCT test in which lymphocytes must be kept alive. This new method is an alternative way to screen HLA antibodies. In addition, it is expected that this method will be used to screen anti-HPA antibodies.
