Abstract
We previously reported that skim milk (SM) is an effective cryoprotectant for cryopreservation of canine spermatozoa instead of egg yolk (EY), which is the conventional cryoprotectant. In this study, the fertilizing ability and practical use of frozen canine spermatozoa prepared with SM were evaluated by transcervical insemination. Frozen-thawed spermatozoa were inseminated one to four times on days 2-9 after the LH surge. In SM group, a single transcervical insemination (TCI) on Day 5 led to higher delivery rate (83%) than any other days (33%-50%) post-LH surge. In EY group, delivery rate in double TCI on days 5 and 6 (71%) was higher compared to any other experimental groups (0%-44%). Regardless of single or double, TCI on Day 5 or Day 6 led to higher litter sizes in SM or EY groups, respectively. The breeding efficiency and litter size of single TCI on Day 5 (4.2) and double TCI on Day 5 and Day 6 (3.7) were significantly higher than in the other experimental groups in SM and EY groups, respectively (p < .05). These findings suggest that skim milk is a suitable alternative to egg yolk for cryopreservation of canine spermatozoa, and the suitable timing for insemination might be on Day 5 post-LH surge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic disease that is characterized by the formation of noncaseating granuloma and whose etiology is unclear. It is unclear whether patients with sarcoidosis are suitable organ donors. CASE We treated a 56-year-old woman with pulmonary sarcoidosis who donated her kidney. She was previously in good health and was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis during her preoperative examination. Because she presented with no symptoms and was otherwise in good condition, donor nephrectomy was performed. RESULTS Baseline biopsy examination showed no evidence of sarcoidosis. One year after transplantation, both the donor and the recipient had not developed kidney dysfunction or recurrence of sarcoidosis. CONCLUSION This is a rare case in which a patient with pulmonary sarcoidosis donated a kidney for transplantation, and both the recipient and the donor were clinically healthy. A patient with sarcoidosis and no kidney lesion can donate a living kidney, because transplantation appears to be safe for both the recipient and the donor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis of the progression of periodontitis presently depends on the use of clinical symptoms (such as attachment loss) and radiographic imaging. The aim of the multicenter study described here was to evaluate the diagnostic use of the bacterial content of subgingival plaque recovered from the deepest pockets in assessing disease progression in chronic periodontitis patients. METHODS This study consisted of a 24-month investigation of a total of 163 patients with chronic periodontitis who received trimonthly follow-up care. Subgingival plaque from the deepest pockets was recovered and assessed for bacterial content of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans using the modified Invader PLUS assay. The corresponding serum IgG titers were measured using ELISA. Changes in clinical parameters were evaluated over the course of 24 months. The sensitivity, specificity, and prediction values were calculated and used to determine cutoff points for prediction of the progression of chronic periodontitis. RESULTS Of the 124 individuals who completed the 24-month monitoring phase, 62 exhibited progression of periodontitis, whereas 62 demonstrated stable disease. The P. gingivalis counts of subgingival plaque from the deepest pockets was significantly associated with the progression of periodontitis (p < 0.001, positive predictive value = 0.708). CONCLUSIONS The P. gingivalis counts of subgingival plaque from the deepest pockets may be associated with the progression of periodontitis.

Abstract
Patients with COL4A1 mutation-related disorders demonstrate a variety of disease phenotypes, which caused by small-vessel dysfunction in the brain, eyes, kidney, muscle, or heart. The involvement of organs mainly depends on the expression of the COL4A1 gene. Complication or dysfunction of the alveolar tissue has not been reported in the literature on COL4A1 mutation-related disorders. We herein report the case of a boy with schizencephaly, renovascular hypertension, and retinal arteriosclerosis of unknown origin, who suffered from severe and repetitive alveolar hemorrhage at 9 years of age. A novel COL4A1 mutation was finally identified as the genetic cause. The pulmonary complication in the present case represents an important pathophysiological mechanism COL4A1 mutation-related disorders; lung tissue with COL4A1 gene mutations may be vulnerable and environmental substances and microorganisms in the air could accumulate to cause chronic damage in the alveolar tissues, especially in patients with tracheostoma and renovascular hypertension.

Abstract
Glycyrrhiza uralensis roots used in this study were produced using novel cultivation systems, including artificial hydroponics and artificial hydroponic-field hybrid cultivation. The equivalency between G. uralensis root extracts produced by hydroponics and/or hybrid cultivation and a commercial Glycyrrhiza crude drug were evaluated for both safety and efficacy, and there were no significant differences in terms of mutagenicity on the Ames tests. The levels of cadmium and mercury in both hydroponic roots and crude drugs were less than the limit of quantitation. Arsenic levels were lower in all hydroponic roots than in the crude drug, whereas mean lead levels in the crude drug were not significantly different from those in the hydroponically cultivated G. uralensis roots. Both hydroponic and hybrid-cultivated root extracts showed antiallergic activities against contact hypersensitivity that were similar to those of the crude drug extracts. These study results suggest that hydroponic and hybrid-cultivated roots are equivalent in safety and efficacy to those of commercial crude drugs. Further studies are necessary before the roots are applicable as replacements for the currently available commercial crude drugs produced from wild plant resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sixteen pertussis cases in haemodialysis patients and healthcare workers were detected in a 25-bed outpatient haemodialysis facility in Japan between October 2013 and April 2014. AIM To describe an outbreak of pertussis among patients and healthcare workers, and to identify risk factors for pertussis infection. METHODS Sputum cultures, loop-mediated isothermal amplification assays performed on nasopharyngeal swabs to detect respiratory pathogens including Bordetella pertussis, and serum anti-pertussis toxin immunoglobulin G measurements were performed for all haemodialysis patients and healthcare workers. A retrospective case-control study was performed to identify the risk factors for pertussis infection in the clinic. FINDINGS Only six of the 16 pertussis patients (37.5%) had respiratory symptoms. Recent exposure to an unmasked individual with a cough was associated with pertussis infection (odds ratio 6.25, P<0.05). The outbreak was terminated successfully after enforcing the use of surgical masks among both patients and healthcare workers. CONCLUSION This report demonstrates the risk of pertussis transmission in a haemodialysis facility, and underscores the importance of wearing surgical masks to control a pertussis outbreak.

Abstract
We studied 135 hands in 77 Japanese patients to assess the frequency of radial involvement and its association with recurrence and the Dupuytren’s diathesis. The radial aspect of the hand was affected in 22% of the hands. Diseased cords were observed in ten patients who underwent surgery on the radial aspect of the hand. Longitudinal cords on the radial side of thenar eminence and distal transverse interdigital cords were common. The radial aspect of the hand was the most common site of disease extension, though recurrence never occurred after excision of a radial lesion. Ectopic lesions, bilateral hand involvement, and recurrence were significantly more frequent in patients with the radial side involvement. Thus the results of this study suggest that radial side disease is associated with the Dupuytren’s diathesis and is a risk factor of recurrence.

Abstract
To clarify the mechanism of antiproliferative action of interferon-α (IFN-α) in hematological malignancy, we examined the transferrin receptor system in the lymphoblastoid cell line, Daudi cells treated with IFN-α. When cells were cultured with 10(4)U/ml of IFN-α, the number of surface transferrin receptors was decreased to 60% of that seen in the control culture. This decrease was not neutralized by co-incubation with the iron chelator, desferrioxamine (10-200 μM), suggesting that the change in the level of chelatable iron did not account for the decrease in transferrin receptor numbers. When determined by metabolic labeling using (35)S-methionine, IFN-α markedly decreased the rate of transferrin receptor biosynthesis. Uptake of iron and the cellular ferritin content also decreased by 50% when incubated with 10(4)U/ml of IFN-α. These data indicate that IFN-α inhibits transferrin receptor biosynthesis in an iron-independent fashion and the subsequent cellular iron-deficiency state may play a role in the antiproliferative action of IFN-α.

Abstract
Pancreatitis is a relatively rare complication in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here we present a case of SLE associated with autoimmune pancreatitis. A 37-year old woman was admitted to our hospital because of fever, skin rash, proteinuria and abdominal pain. A diagnosis of SLE was made based on her clinical, laboratory and renal histological findings showing diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis. Elevated serum amylase, typical radiographic findings and selective increase in serum IgG4 all suggested that the patient also had autoimmune pancreatitis. Systemic administration of glucocorticoid successfully induced remission of pancreatitis and nephritis along with the reduction of IgG4. Autoimmune pancreatitis is a newly recognized type of pancreatitis, in which IgG4 immune response is thought to participate pathophysiologically. Although the disease has been observed to develop in patients having various connective tissue diseases, our report is the first to describe IgG4 related autoimmune pancreatitis in a patient with SLE.
