Vertical distribution of sediment phosphorus in Lake Hachirogata related to the effect of land reclamation on phosphorus accumulation

The focus of this work is the change in sediment properties and chemical characteristics that occur after land reclamation projects. The results indicate a higher sedimentation rate in Lake Hachirogata after reclamation, with the rate increasing with proximity to the agricultural zone. In the west-side water samples, higher levels of dissolved total nitrogen and dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) were found in both surface and bottom waters. The increase in P (39-80%) was generally greater than that for N (12-16%), regarding the nutrient supply from reclaimed farmland in the western part of the lake. In the eastern part of the lake, the pore-water Cl^- profile showed a decreasing vertical gradient in the sediment core. This indicates desalination of the lake water after construction of a sluice gate in 1961. In the western sediment-core sample, a uniform Cl^- profile indicates the mixing of lake water and pore water after reclamation. Considering the sedimentation of P in the last 100 years, there is a trend of increasing accumulation of P and P-activities after the reclamation project. This appears to be an impact from change in the lake environment as a result of increased agricultural nutrients, desalination, and residence. A large amount of mobile phosphorus (42-72% of TP in the western core sample) trapped in sediment increases the risk of phosphorus release and intensification of algal blooms. High sediment phosphorus and phosphorus mobility should be considered a source of pollution in the coastal environment.

Quadratic Fermi node in a 3D strongly correlated semimetal

Strong spin–orbit coupling fosters exotic electronic states such as topological insulators and superconductors, but the combination of strong spin–orbit and strong electron–electron interactions is just beginning to be understood. Central to this emerging area are the 5d transition metal iridium oxides. Here, in the pyrochlore iridate Pr₂Ir₂O₇, we identify a non-trivial state with a single-point Fermi node protected by cubic and time-reversal symmetries, using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Owing to its quadratic dispersion, the unique coincidence of four degenerate states at the Fermi energy, and strong Coulomb interactions, non-Fermi liquid behaviour is predicted, for which we observe some evidence. Our discovery implies that Pr₂Ir₂O₇ is a parent state that can be manipulated to produce other strongly correlated topological phases, such as topological Mott insulator, Weyl semimetal, and quantum spin and anomalous Hall states.

5d transition metal iridates provide a platform to study the combined effects of strong spin orbit coupling and strong electronic correlations. Here, the authors find a quadratic band touching in the band structure of Pr₂Ir₂O₇, suggesting it may be tuned to form various strongly correlated topological phases.

Development of Magnesium and Siloxane-Containing Vaterite and Its Composite Materials for Bone Regeneration

Development of novel biomaterials with Mg(2+), Ca(2+), and silicate ions releasability for bone regeneration is now in progress. Several inorganic ions have been reported to stimulate bone-forming cells. We featured Ca(2+), silicate, and especially, Mg(2+) ions as growth factors for osteoblasts. Various biomaterials, such as ceramic powders and organic-inorganic composites, that release the ions, have been developed and investigated for their cytocompatibilities in our previous work. Through the investigation, providing the three ions was found to be effective to activate osteogenic cells. Magnesium and siloxane--containing vaterite was prepared by a carbonation process as an inorganic particle that can has the ability to simultaneously release Ca(2+), silicate, and Mg(2+) ions to biodegradable polymers. Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA)- and bioactive PLLA-based composites containing vaterite coatings were discussed regarding their degradability and cytocompatibility using a metallic Mg substrate as Mg(2+) ion source. PLLA/SiV composite film, which has a releasability of silicate ions besides Ca(2+) ion, was coated on a pure Mg substrate to be compared with the PLLA/V coating. The degradability and releasability of inorganic ions were morphologically and quantitatively monitored in a cell culture medium. The bonding strength between the coatings and Mg substrates was one of the key factors to control Mg(2+) ion release from the substrates. The cell culture tests were conducted using mouse osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1 cells); cellular morphology, proliferation, and differentiation on the materials were evaluated. The PLLA/V and PLLA/SiV coatings on Mg substrates were found to enhance the proliferation, especially the PLLA/SiV coating possessed a higher ability to induce the osteogenic differentiation of the cells.

Cytomegalovirus-induced small intestinal bleeding complicated with cutaneous vasculitis: a case report

Abstract A 17-year-old woman who was being treated with prednisolone for cutaneous vasculitis developed recurrent massive melena and abdominal pain. An emergency resection was performed because of uncontrollable melena, revealing many small intestinal ulcers with cytomegalic inclusion bodies, which were found by immunopathological staining. However, the cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigenemia (CMV-Ag) assay and the IgM antibody titer for CMV were negative on admission. This case indicates that a high state of alertness for CMV infection in immunocompromised patients with gastrointestinal bleeding is required even if the CMV-Ag assay and IgM antibody are both negative.

Giant optical rotation in a three-dimensional semiconductor chiral photonic crystal

Optical rotation is experimentally demonstrated in a semiconductor-based three-dimensional chiral photonic crystal (PhC) at a telecommunication wavelength. We design a rotationally-stacked woodpile PhC structure, where neighboring layers are rotated by 45° and four layers construct a single helical unit. The mirror-asymmetric PhC made from GaAs with sub-micron periodicity is fabricated by a micro-manipulation technique. The linearly polarized light incident on the structure undergoes optical rotation during transmission. The obtained results show good agreement with numerical simulations. The measurement demonstrates the largest optical rotation angle as large as ∼ 23° at 1.3 μm wavelength for a single helical unit.

Anomalous dressing of Dirac fermions in the topological surface state of Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Cu-doped Bi2Se3

Quasiparticle dynamics on the topological surface state of Bi(2(3), Bi(2)Te(3), and superconducting Cu(x)Bi(2)Se(3) are studied by 7 eV laser-based angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find strong mode couplings in the Dirac-cone surface states at energies of ~3 and ~15-20 meV associated with an exceptionally large coupling constant λ of ~3, which is one of the strongest ever reported for any material. This result is compatible with the recent observation of a strong Kohn anomaly in the surface phonon dispersion of Bi(2)Se(3), but it appears that the theoretically proposed "spin-plasmon" excitations realized in helical metals are also playing an important role. Intriguingly, the ~3 meV mode coupling is found to be enhanced in the superconducting state of Cu(x)Bi(2)Se(3).

Evidence for a cos(4φ) modulation of the superconducting energy gap of optimally doped FeTe(0.6)Se(0.4) single crystals using laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We study the superconducting-gap anisotropy of the Γ-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe(0.6)Se(0.4) (T(c)=14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe sharp superconducting (SC) coherence peaks at T=2.5 K. In contrast to earlier angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a cos(4φ) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the importance of second-nearest-neighbor electronic interactions between the iron sites in the framework of s(±)-wave superconductivity.

The measurement of axillary moisture for the assessment of dehydration among older patients: a pilot study

PURPOSE

Dry axilla can sometimes be found among dehydrated older patients. In this study, we measured the axillary moisture and assessed it as possible marker for dehydration.

METHODS

Twenty-nine older patients admitted with acute medical conditions participated in this study. Dehydration was diagnosed by the calculated serum osmolality of greater than 295 mOsm/L. The moisture of axilla was measured by a skin moisture impedance meter which was applied at the center of axilla of patients.

RESULTS

11 patients (7 males and 4 females) were diagnosed as dehydrated and 18 patients (10 males and 8 females) were diagnosed as non-dehydrated. The mean axillary moisture (33%) in the dehydrated group was significantly lower than that (42%) in the non-dehydrated group (p<0.05). The axillary moisture ≥50% showed the sensitivity of 88%. The axillary moisture <30% showed the specificity of 91%. Use of a single cutoff value of 40% moisture produced the sensitivity of 59% and the specificity of 9%. As for the physical signs, dry axilla had also moderate sensitivity and excellent specificity to detect dehydration.

CONCLUSIONS

The measurement of the axillary moisture could help assess dehydration. Dehydration could be ruled out when the axillary moisture ≥50%, while it could be ruled-in when the axillary moisture is <30%.

Siloxane-poly(lactic acid)-vaterite composites with 3D cotton-like structure

Trace amounts of ionic calcium and silicon species have been reported to stimulate the proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization of bone-forming cells. Composite materials comprising siloxane-doped calcium carbonate (vaterite) particles and poly(L-lactic acid) have been developed [siloxane-poly(lactic acid)-vaterite hybrid-composite, SiPVH] so far; they were designed such that calcium and silicate ions are gradually released from SiPVH and they show the chronic effects of ions on cellular activities. In the present work, SiPVH with a 3D cotton-like structure was prepared by electrospinning to obtain the major advantages of excellent bioactivity and ease of handling for bone filling surgery. The diameter of the fibrous skeletons that form structure of the cotton-like SiPVH was controlled to ~10 μm to achieve cellular migration into the spaces between fibers. The resulting cotton-like SiPVH showed good flexibility. The fiber surface was coated rapidly with numerous particles of several hundred nanometers in size by alternate soaking in CaCl(2) and Na(2)HPO(4). The treated cotton-like material, which released calcium and silicate ions gradually, showed good cellular migration behavior into the 3D structure in cell culture tests using murine osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells.
