Abstract
We have developed an evaluation system for pronation and supination of forearms. The motion of pronation and supination of the forearm is used as a diagnosis method of developmental disability, etc. However, this diagnosis method has a demerit in which diagnosis results between doctors are not consistent. It is hoped that a more quantitative and simple evaluation method is established. Moreover it is hoped a diagnostic criteria obtained from healthy subjects can be established to diagnose developmental disorder patients. We developed a simple and portable evaluation system for pronation and supination of forearms. Three-dimensional wireless acceleration and angular velocity sensors are used for this system. In this study, pronation and supination of forearms of 570 subjects (subjects aged 6-12, 21-100) were examined. We could obtain aging curves in the neuromotor function of pronation and supination. These aging curves obtained by our developed system, has the potential to become diagnostic criteria for a developmental disability, etc.

Abstract
During surgery on the skull base, preservation of the integrity of the ocular motor nerves is vitally important. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring methods for protecting such functions have been reported by several investigators. However, these methods so far have not been popularized sufficiently, due to the difficulty and complexity of the procedures involved. The authors have developed an extremely simple but far more reliable method using electro-oculography under total intravenous anesthesia with propofol to preserve the integrity of the ocular motor nerves. The ocular motor nerves were stimulated with a monopolar electrode intracranially, and the polarity of the waves was recorded using surface electrodes placed around the eyeball, yielding precise information concerning the locations of the oculomotor nerve and/or abducent nerve. In addition, by performing continuous monitoring, invasive procedures affecting the ocular motor nerves could be detected as spontaneous ocular movements. In practice at our department, this method has been applied in 12 cases with tumors close to the ocular motor nerves, and has produced excellent results.

Abstract
Cerebral salt wasting (CSW) frequently occurs concomitantly with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). CSW induces excessive natriuresis and osmotic diuresis, reduces total blood volume, aggravates cerebral vasospasm and causes cerebral ischemia after SAH. This study examined the inhibitory effect of hydrocortisone on CSW in rat SAH models. Hydrocortisone had an inhibitory effect on CSW because hydrocortisone functioned in a dose-dependent manner to inhibit the increase in sodium excretion and sodium/potassium ratio after SAH onset. We conclude that hydrocortisone is a useful drug for the treatment of CSW after SAH.

Abstract
We investigated the alteration of dopaminergic system in striata of Parkinson's disease (PD) at different stages using positron emission tomography (PET), [11C]2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-fluorophenyl)tropane (CFT) for dopamine transporter (DAT), and [11C]raclopride (RAC) for dopamine D2 receptor (D2R). We studied eight elderly healthy volunteers (Group A), 13 drug naïve patients with PD (Group B), and seven advanced PD patients with mild dyskinesia (Group D). Six patients in Group B were re-examined after antiparkinsonian therapy (Group C). Regions of interest were drawn on the cerebellar hemisphere, head of the caudate nucleus (CN), and anterior (AP) and posterior putamen (PP) in the PET images. We calculated uptake ratio index (URI), asymmetry index (AI) and presynapse-to-postsynapse ratio (PPR) to evaluate dopaminergic function. DAT was smaller in the three PD groups than the Group A. URI of RAC in the PP was significantly larger in Group B than in Groups A and C. AI of CFT in the putamen was larger in the PD groups than in normal subjects, and AI of RAC in the PP was the largest in the Group B. PPRs in the AP and PP were smaller in the three PD groups than in Group A. DAT decreased with disease progression in patients with PD. Binding of RAC was largest in the putamen of drug-naïve PD patients, but the enhanced binding could not be detected in the therapeutic patients with PD because of weak D2R affinity of RAC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of antenatal magnesium sulfate (MgSO(4)) treatment on the clinical responsiveness of the ductus arteriosus to indomethacin prophylaxis and on that of symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (sPDA) to indomethacin treatment in premature neonates. STUDY DESIGN This is a retrospective study of 160 consecutively admitted neonates with a gestational age of <28 weeks (41 MgSO(4) exposed and 119 controls) who received indomethacin prophylaxis. RESULT Incidence of early closure of the ductus arteriosus was lower in the MgSO(4)-exposed neonates than in the control group (59 vs 84%, respectively; P=0.002), whereas incidence of an sPDA was higher (46 vs 24%, respectively; P=0.006). Response to indomethacin treatment was similar between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis indicated increased risk of failure of early ductus arteriosus closure following antenatal MgSO(4) treatment (odds ratio, 4.03; P=0.002). CONCLUSION In extremely preterm neonates, antenatal MgSO(4) treatment reduces clinical responsiveness of the ductus arteriosus to indomethacin prophylaxis but not that of sPDA to indomethacin treatment.

Abstract
Although a decrease in cerebrovascular reserves (CVR) is known to enhance the risk of stroke, changes in this parameter after carotid artery stenting (CAS) have rarely been investigated. The present study is the first to compare CVR recoveries after applying CAS to patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease. CAS was performed for 31 consecutive patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease. They underwent acetazolamide-challenged single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) before and after CAS to obtain data on resting stage cerebral blood flow (CBF(rest) values) in various regions of interest (ROIs) defined by a three-dimensional stereotactic ROI template. CVR values on ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheric sides were then calculated based on the CBF(rest) data. The 31 patients were dichotomized into unilateral (n=22) and bilateral (n=9) lesion groups, and no significant between-group differences were observed in CBF(rest) before and after CAS. In the unilateral group, there were no differences in CVR values before and after CAS. In the bilateral group, however, the CVR values significantly increased in nearly all the investigated ROIs on the contralateral side. Also, the hemispheric CVR values on both sides significantly increased after CAS in the bilateral group, while no such increase was observed in the unilateral group. CAS in patients with symptomatic bilateral carotid artery disease has the potential utility for their haemodynamic improvement even on the contralateral hemispheric side.

Abstract
Liquid B2O3 represents an archetypical oxide melt with a superhigh viscosity at the melting temperature. We present the results of the in situ x-ray diffraction study and the in situ viscosity measurements of liquid B2O3 under high pressure up to 8 GPa. Additionally, the 11B solid state NMR spectroscopy study of B2O3 glasses quenched from the melt at five different pressures has been carried out. Taken together, the results obtained provide understanding of the nature of structural transformations in liquid B2O3. The fraction of the boroxol rings in the melt structure rapidly decreases with pressure. From pressures of about 4.5 GPa, four-coordinated boron states begin to emerge sharply, reaching the fraction 40%-45% at 8 GPa. The viscosity of the B2O3 melt along the melting curve drops by 4 orders of magnitude as the pressure increases up to 5.5 GPa and remains unchanged on further pressure increase.

Abstract
Cerebral salt wasting (CSW) frequently occurs concomitantly with an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). CSW induces excessive natriuresis and osmotic diuresis, and reduces the total volume of blood. We previously reported that a rat model with SAH induced by endovascular puncture (EP) exhibited CSW. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the spread of bleeding in the subarachnoid space and the intensity of CSW. We also investigated the development of CSW in different SAH models. SAH was induced by EP or by 0.3 mL of blood injection (BI) into the cisterna magna. To evaluate the occurrence of CSW, urine was cumulatively collected at the onset of SAH to 6 h later and analyzed for sodium (Na) excretion. SAH was classified from grade 1 (no bleeding) to grade 4 (severe bleeding) based on the spread of bleeding in the subarachnoid space. In the EP model (SAH grade > 2) as the SAH grade increased, the volume of urine and Na excretion also significantly increased. Although the BI model rats exhibited SAH of grade 4, the volume of urine and Na excretion did not change. Therefore, our conclusion is that the spread of bleeding in the subarachnoid space may not cause CSW.
