Abstract
Intestinal mucositis is a frequent side effect in cancer patients who are treated with chemotherapy. There are no effective treatment strategies to date. To find a novel way to alleviate mucositis, the effects of selenium-enriched Bifidobacterium longum (Se-B. longum) in preventing irinotecan (CPT-11)-induced intestinal mucositis in a mouse model were investigated. We tested the ability of Se-B. longum (Se 0.6 mg/kg, 5×108 cfu/mice) to reduce small intestinal mucositis induced by CPT-11 (75 mg/kg, daily) injected intraperitoneally for four consecutive days in mice. Se-B. longum significantly decreased mortality induced by CPT-11 from 71.4% to 16.7%. CPT-11 induced body weight loss, which was alleviated by preventative and simultaneous administration of Se-B. longum. Se-B. longum significantly decreased the severity of diarrhoea from 11 to 4% compared to the CPT-11 group. Inflammation, including intestinal shortening and upregulation of tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β induced by CPT- 11, were prevented by Se-B. longum. Se-B. longum is effective in preventing small intestinal mucositis induced by CPT-11 and therefore has potential to be used clinically by cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to probe the morphological features of the proximal segment (V1) of vertebral artery (VA) in a sample of Chinese cadavers. MATERIALS AND METHODS The origin, course and outer diameter at origin of the pre-vertebral part of the VAs were evaluated in 119 adult cadavers. RESULTS It was found that 94.12% of the VAs originated from the subclavian arteries, bilaterally. The variant origins were present in 5.88% of the cadavers and all originated directly from the arch of the aorta. All the variations were observed on the left side of male cadavers. The average outer diameters at origin of the normal and variation groups were 4.35 ± 1.00 mm and 4.82 ± ± 1.42 mm, respectively, p = 0.035. In the normal group, but not in the variation group, the average diameter in the males was significantly larger than that in the females (4.50 ± 0.99 mm, 3.92 ± 0.92 mm, respectively, p = 0.000). In addition, only 5 cadavers in the normal group had hypoplastic VAs (4.20%, 4 males, 3 right-sided). Vertebral artery dominance (VAD) was present in 91 (69 males) out of 112 cadavers and more common on the left (n = 48). In addition, 3 cadavers satisfied conditions for coexistence of VAD and vertebral artery hypoplasia. All 7 cadavers in the variation group exhibited VAD, which was more common on the right side (n = 5). CONCLUSIONS The morphologic variations and frequencies described above have implications for the early prevention, abnormal anatomy detection, accurate diagnosis, safe surgery and endovascular treatment of cardiovascular and neurological disease.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of preoperative Halo-gravity traction (HGT) in the treatment of severe kyphoscoliosis secondary to neurofibromatosis type Ⅰ (NF1). Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on patients with severe kyphoscoliosis secondary to NF1 at Department of Spinal Surgery, Drum Tower Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University between July 2007 and May 2016. A total of 29 patients including 17 males and 12 females were finally enrolled and the age was (13.7±2.9) years. The Cobb angle of major coronal curve and global kyphosis were measured before and after HGT. The forced vital capacity (FVC)and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) before and after traction were also recorded. The paired t test was used for comparison analysis. Results: The average maximum traction weight of HGT was (12.2±2.8) kg and the traction duration was (10.2±6.6) weeks. The coronal Cobb angle before HGT was (87.5±36.5)°, which improved to (68.4±25.9)° after HGT with a correction rate of (21.9±12.1)% (t=9.14, P<0.001); the average global kyphosis before HGT was (79.1±27.1)°, which improved to (59.9±19.4)° after HGT and the correction rate was (20.2±14.1)% (t=8.55, P<0.001). One patient had transient brachial plexus palsy which resolved completely after reducing the traction weight. After HGT treatment, FVC increased from (0.83±0.16) L to (0.89±0.19) L (t=1.48, P=0.12) and FEV(1) increased from (0.72±0.16) L to (0.78±0.20) L (t=0.49,P=0.63). FVC predicted and FEV(1) predicted improved from (42.9±20.1)% and (40.6±19.6)% to (46.9±20.5)% (t=0.98,P=0.33) and (43.6±25.8)% (t=1.24,P=0.22), respectively. Conclusion: Preoperative HGT in the treatment of severe kyphoscoliosis secondary to NF1 can improve spinal deformity and pulmonary function to some extent, which can further benefit the patients by improving their surgical tolerance.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the long term change of the cervical sagittal profile in adolescent Chiari malformation type Ⅰ (CMI)/syringomyelia undergoing posterior fossa decompression (PFD) and to further evaluate the correlation between the syrinx resolution and cervical sagittal profile. Methods: A retrospective radiographic study was performed in 32 adolescents undergoing PFD for CMI/syringomyelia from October 2011 to August 2015 with a minimum 2-year follow-up. There were 23 males and 9 females, with a mean age of (13.7±2.8) years (range, 10-16 years). The following parameters including upper cervical angle (C(0)-C(2)), lower cervical angle (C(2)-C(7)), sagittal balance (C(2)-C(7)SVA), cervical curvature index (CCI), syrinx size and length were compared preoperatively and at the last follow-up. The correlation of syrinx resolution and cervical sagittal parameters were further analyzed with Pearson correlation analysis. Results: All patients received a followed-up for 2.0-6.5 years [mean (3.9±1.1) years]. The lower cervical angle and CCI were-29.8°±11.4° and 29.1%±7.1% at the last follow-up, respectively, which were significantly higher than those before surgery (-15.2°±8.8°, 13.4%±4.2%)(t=2.917, 2.902, both P<0.05). The syrinx size and length were also obviously decreased at the last follow-up. No significant difference was found in the upper cervical angle and C(2)-C(7)SVA before operation and at the last follow-up (t=0.302, 0.871, both P>0.05). There were significantly positive correlations between the differences of syrinx width and the lower cervical angle, and the CCI before and after surgery (r=0.611, 0.652, both P<0.05). Significantly positive correlations were also observed between the differences of syrinx length and the lower cervical angle, and the CCI before and after surgery (r=0.504, 0.514, both P<0.05). Conclusions: The cervical lordosis can be restored after PFD in adolescents with CMI/syringomyelia. The resolution of syrinx may play an important role in restoring the cervical sagittal alignment.

Abstract
We study unconventional superconductivity in exfoliated single crystals of a promising three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductor candidate, Nb-doped Bi2Se3 through differential conductance spectroscopy and magneto-transport. The strong anisotropy of the critical field along the out-of-plane direction suggests that the thin exfoliated flakes are in the quasi-2D limit. Normal metal-superconductor (NS) contacts with either high or low transparencies made by depositing gold leads onto Nb-doped Bi2Se3 flakes both show significant enhancement in zero bias conductance and coherence dips at the superconducting energy gap. Such behavior is inconsistent with conventional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory. Instead, we discuss how our results are consistent with p-wave pairing symmetry, supporting the possibility of topological superconductivity in Nb-doped Bi2Se3. Finally, we observe signatures of multiple superconducting energy gaps, which could originate from multiple Fermi surfaces reported earlier in bulk crystals.

Abstract
We present an extensive study on the effect of substrate orientation, strain, stoichiometry, and defects on spin-ice physics in Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 thin films grown onto yttria-stabilized-zirconia substrates. We find that growth in different orientations produces different strain states in the films. All films exhibit similar c -axis lattice parameters for their relaxed portions, which are consistently larger than the bulk value of 10.1 Å. Transmission electron microscopy reveals antisite disorder and growth defects to be present in the films, but evidence of stuffing is not observed. The amount of disorder depends on the growth orientation, with the (110) film showing the least. Magnetization measurements at 1.8 K show the expected magnetic anisotropy and saturation magnetization values associated with a spin ice for all orientations; shape anisotropy is apparent when comparing in- and out-of-plane directions. Significantly, only the (110)-oriented films display the hallmark spin-ice plateau state in magnetization, albeit less well defined compared to the plateau observed in a single crystal. Neutron-scattering maps on the more disordered (111)-oriented films show the Q = 0 phase previously observed in bulk materials, but the Q = X phase giving the plateau state remains elusive. We conclude that the spin-ice physics in thin films is modified by defects and strain, leading to a reduction in the temperature at which correlations drive the system into the spin-ice state.

Abstract
An inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed in an S = 3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) at ambient and high magnetic fields. Relatively broad and monotonically dispersive magnetic excitations were observed at ambient field, where no long-range magnetic order exists. In the magnetic-field-induced long-range ordered state at 10 T, the magnetic dispersions become slightly more intense, albeit still broad as in the disordered state, and two excitation gaps, probably originating from an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and intrabilayer interactions, develop. Analyzing the magnetic dispersions using the linear spin-wave theory, we estimated the intraplane and intrabilayer magnetic interactions, which are almost consistent with those determined by ab initio density functional theory calculations [M. Alaei et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 140404(R) (2017)], except the third and fourth neighbor intrabilayer interactions. Most importantly, as predicted by the theory, there is no significant frustration in the honeycomb plane but frustrating intrabilayer interactions probably give rise to the disordered ground state.

Abstract
Single crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and electron spin resonance experiments are used to study the magnetic structure and spin waves in Pb2VO(PO4)2, a prototypical layered S = 1/2 ferromagnet with frustrating next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The observed excitation spectrum is found to be inconsistent with a simple square lattice model previously proposed for this material. At least four distinct exchange coupling constants are required to reproduce the measured spin wave dispersion. The degree of magnetic frustration is correspondingly revised and found to be substantially smaller than in all previous estimates.

Predicted final spinal height in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can be achieved by surgery regardless of maturity status. Bone Joint J 2018; 100-B:1372-1376. Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of maturity status at the time of surgery on final spinal height in patients with an adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using the spine-pelvic index (SPI). The SPI is a self-control ratio that is independent of age and maturity status. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study recruited 152 female patients with a Lenke 1 AIS. The additional inclusion criteria were a thoracic Cobb angle between 45° and 70°, Risser 0 to 1 or 3 to 4 at the time of surgery, and follow-up until 18 years of age or Risser stage 5. The patients were stratified into four groups: Risser 0 to 1 and selective fusion surgery (Group 1), Risser 0 to 1 and non-selective fusion (Group 2), Risser 3 to 4 and selective fusion surgery (Group 3), and Risser 3 to 4 and non-selective fusion (Group 4). The height of spine at follow-up (HOSf) and height of pelvis at follow-up (HOPf) were measured and the predicted HOS (pHOS) was calculated as 2.22 (SPI) × HOPf. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for statistical analysis. RESULTS Of the 152 patients, there were 32 patients in Group 1, 27 patients in Group 2, 48 patients in Group 3, and 45 patients in Group 4. Significantly greater HOSf was observed in Group 3 compared with Group 1 (p = 0.03) and in Group 4 compared with Group 2 (p = 0.02), with similar HOPf (p = 0.75 and p = 0.83, respectively), suggesting that patients who undergo surgery at Risser grade of 0 to 1 have a shorter spinal height at follow-up than those who have surgery at Risser 4 to 5. HOSf was similar to pHOS in both Group 1 and Group 2 (p = 0.62 and p = 0.45, respectively), indicating that undergoing surgery at Risser 0 to 1 does not necessarily affect final spinal height. CONCLUSION This study shows that fusion surgery at Risser 0 may result in growth restriction unlike fusion surgery at Risser 3 to 4. Despite such growth restriction, AIS patients could reach their predicted or 'normal' spinal height after surgery regardless of baseline maturity status due to the longer baseline spinal length in AIS patients and the remaining growth potential at the non-fusion levels. Abstract
Background: Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for curing breast tumors. In recent years, the number of diagnosed nonpalpable breast lesions has risen rapidly following increased breast cancer awareness and the broad promotion of mammography (MMG) screening. Aim: A comparison of the effect and accuracy between the superficial mark guided localization technique (SGL) and the hook wire guided localization technique (WGL) for nonpalpable breast microcalcifications. Methods: Retrospective research was conducted to compare SGL and WGL techniques. These techniques were performed on 51 patients with nonpalpable breast microcalcifications from the months of Jan 2015 to May 2016. Results: A total of 51 patients with ages ranging from 32 to 72 years were included in the study; 25 (49.01%) patients were randomly selected for the WGL group, while the other 26 (50.99%) patients were randomly selected for the SGL group. One case in the WGL group was treated with the SGL technology due to technical difficulties with the localization procedure. No statistically significant association was found between the 2 groups within the specified diameter of excised tissue. For the WGL group and SGL group, the average diameter of excised tissue was 78.4 mm and 78.9 mm, respectively. No complications were observed for patients in the SGL group, whereas 4 patients in the WGL group experienced complications. Two patients had a vasovagal reaction and another 2 experienced ecchymoma or shifting of the hook wire. According to the paraffin result, we found 3 (12%) malignant cases in the WGL group and 6 (23%) malignant cases in the SGL group. Conclusion: The superficial mark localization technique is as accurate as the hook wire guided localization technique. The procedure has the advantages of being less expensive and causes less complications.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the long-term results and the influence factors of spontaneous correction of unfused thoracic curves in anterior and posterior selective fusions in Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods: From January 2005 to December 2011, 89 Lenke type 5C AIS patients with a minimum of 5-year follow-up who underwent thoracolumbar/lumbar (TL/L) selective fusion in Spine Surgery of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were reviewed.Forty-six patients underwent anterior fusion (anterior group), while 46 underwent posterior fusion (posterior group). The following radiological parameters were measured and analyzed at pre-operation, post-operation, and latest follow-up: curve magnitude of primary thoracolumbar/lumbar and secondary thoracic curve, trunk shift, thoracic apical vertebral translation, upper instrumented vertebra tilt, thoracic kyphosis, proximal junctional angle, sagittal vertical axis. Independent sample t test was used to compare the above parameters between the two groups. Results: Compared with those in posterior group, anterior group were found with less fusion levels (5.4±0.6 vs 5.9±0.8, t=3.318, P=0.001) and longer operation time[(276±28)min vs (186±36)min, t=13.101, P<0.001]. Immediately after surgery, the spinal deformity was significantly corrected in the two groups. The mean spontaneous correction rates of the minor curve were 50%±21% and 56%±20% in anterior and posterior groups, respectively (t=1.489, P=0.140). After a mean follow-up of (6.8±1.7) years in anterior group and (6.3±1.3) years in posterior group, the spontaneous correction rate of minor curve was maintained at 46%±22% and 49%±19%, respectively (t=0.703, P=0.484), with no significant correction loss. Other radiographic parameters were also stably maintained. According to the correlation analysis, the spontaneous correction rate was significantly correlated with upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) tilt in both groups (anterior: r=-0.526, posterior: r=-0.399, both P<0.05). Conclusions: Both anterior and posterior selective fusion can achieve satisfactory spontaneous correction of unfused thoracic curves in Lenke type 5C AIS, with no significant difference between the two surgical approaches. UIV tilt is a key influence factor of spontaneous correction of thoracic curves.

Abstract
This review mainly focused on the etiology and the surgical strategy for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) treatment. Genome-wide association study on the etiology of AIS using samples from more than 5 000 patients and 6 000 normal controls showed two genes: LBX1-AS1 on 10q24.32 and TNIK on 3q26.2 highly related to AIS initiation and progression. Regarding the conservative treatment of AIS, bracing is the only well-documented effective non-operative management in the early stage of AIS. For the patients with Cobb angle smaller than 80°, balancing spine, saving fusion level and restoring thoracic kyphosis are the basic objectives in surgical management. For the severe cases, various osteotomy techniques are often needed. Adequate peri-operative management is important for severe cases, especially for the patients with respiratory failure and neurological deficits.

Abstract
Magnetization plateaus in quantum magnets—where bosonic quasiparticles crystallize into emergent spin superlattices—are spectacular yet simple examples of collective quantum phenomena escaping classical description. While magnetization plateaus have been observed in a number of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets, the description of their magnetic excitations remains an open theoretical and experimental challenge. Here, we investigate the dynamical properties of the triangular-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba3CoSb2O9 in its one-third magnetization plateau phase using a combination of nonlinear spin-wave theory and neutron scattering measurements. The agreement between our theoretical treatment and the experimental data demonstrates that magnons behave semiclassically in the plateau in spite of the purely quantum origin of the underlying magnetic structure. This allows for a quantitative determination of Ba3CoSb2O9 exchange parameters. We discuss the implication of our results to the deviations from semiclassical behavior observed in zero-field spin dynamics of the same material and conclude they must have an intrinsic origin. Frustrated magnetic materials attract significant interest because their properties can become dominated by quantum fluctuations. Here the authors show that excitations in the plateau phase of a quantum magnet can be understood semiclassically even though the ground state involves strong quantum effects.

Abstract
Objective: To explore genetic characteristic of posterior cranial fossa morphology in families of Chiari malformation type Ⅰ (CMI). Methods: From April 2010 to May 2016, a total of 47 cases of CMI families (CMI group) and their 94 parents (CMI-P group)collected were retrospectively reviewed in Department of Spinal Surgery, Drum Tower Hospital, School of Medicine, Nanjing University.Another cohort of 50 asymptomatic adults was enrolled to serve as the control group.Patients with skull fracture or other diseases which can lead to secondary CMI were excluded. On mid-sagittal T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, four measurements were evaluated and compared between these three groups, including the length of cerebellar tonsillar descent, the area of posterior cranial fossa(PCF area), the area of the brain tissue in posterior cranial fossa (PCF tissue area), and the PCF crowdedness indexes (PCF tissue area/ PCF area×100%). Results: Totally 47 CMI patients (21 males and 26 females; mean age, 16.4 years), 94 parents (47 males and 47 females; mean age, 39.2 years) and 50 controls (23 males and 27 females; mean age, 22.3 years) were recruited in this study.Significant differences in all four indexes were found between CMI group and the control group. The length of cerebellar tonsillar descent were much bigger in CMI-P group than in the control group (1.5±2.2 mm vs -0.9±1.1 mm), with 7 cases reach the diagnostic criteria of Chiari malformation(≥5 mm) and one with syingomyelia.Compared to the control group, CMI-P group had smaller PCF area, and its PCF crowdedness indexes averaged 90.0% as between the control group (85.3%) and the CMI group (93.6%). Conclusions: In CMI families, parents have similar posterior cranial fossa abnormalities with their CMI children, presenting obviously narrow and crowded.Their PCF crowdedness indexes are between normal subjects and CMI patients, and their cerebellar tonsils are lower, even some parents are also CMI patients, suggesting genetic mechanisms involved in the development of CMI.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the preoperative axial plane and the surgical outcomes of the Lenke type 1A patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) whose coronal curve type was matched but thoracic kyphosis (TK) was different. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed a series of Lenke type 1A female AIS patients who underwent corrective surgery in the Department of Spine Surgery of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from May to August 2017. After matched with the Cobb angle of the main thoracic curve, the apical vertebral, the vertebra number included in the curve, the lumber modifier in the Lenke classification and Risser sign, 12 pairs of AIS patients, whose coronal curve was matched but thoracic kyphosis was different, were included in this study. The patients were divided into normal TK group and thoracic hypokyphosis group. EOS whole-body images were taken preoperatively and reconstructed by three-dimensional reconstruction. The whole spine anteroposterior X-ray was taken at 3 weeks after surgery. The radiographic parameters were measured on the preoperative and postoperative two-dimensional X-ray images: coronal Cobb angle, TK, lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence (PI) and pelvic tilt (PT). The vertebra rotation was obtained on the EOS three-dimensional reconstructed image, and the average vertebral rotation of the major thoracic curve (MTR), the average vertebral rotation of the proximal thoracic curve (PTR) and the average vertebral rotation of the lumbar curve (LR) were calculated. The paired sample t test was used to compare the difference of preoperative and postoperative radiographic parameters between the groups. Results: A total of 24 patients (12 pairs) were included in this study with an average age of (13.7±2.9) years. The preoperative Cobb angle was similar in the two groups (53.8°±10.2° vs 51.0°±11.1°, t=0.27, P=0.81). The average preoperative TK of the normal TK groups was 28.2°±6.1°, while that of the thoracic hypokyphosis group was 11.2°±5.6°(t=7.68, P<0.01). The MTR in the normal TK group was significantly smaller than that in the thoracic hypokyphosis group (10.2° vs 12.7°, t=-3.74, P<0.01), and there was a significant correlation between TK and MTR (r=0.30, P=0.03). As for the lumbar curve rotation, the LR of the normal TK group was significantly smaller than that in the thoracic hypokyphosis group (t=-2.65, P=0.002), but the absolute value of the two groups was similar (t=-0.33, P=0.31). The lumbar Cobb angle correction rate was significantly greater in patients with thoracic and lumbar curve rotating in the same direction than that in the opposite direction (81.1% vs 61.9%, t=4.24, P=0.005). Conclusions: It indicated that when the coronal deformity is matched, the MTR of the patients with thoracic hypokyphosis is significantly larger than that in the patients with normal thoracic kyphosis. The direction of the thoracic and lumbar curve rotation is required to be well concerned in the preoperative surgical planning.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-Schwab grade Ⅳ osteotomy in the treatment of post-traumatic thoracolumbar kyphosis (PTK). Methods: From October 2012 to January 2015, a total of 31 patients [12 males, 19 females, mean age (43±10) years] with symptomatic PTK undergoing SRS-Schwab grade Ⅳ osteotomy in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were retrospectively reviewed.Radiographic changes were evaluated with preoperative, postoperative and follow-up X-ray.The measurements included thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), focal kyphosis (FK), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS) and sagittal vertical axis (SVA). Clinical outcome was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS), the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and Frankel neurological grade before surgery and during follow-up.The preoperative, postoperative and follow-up data were compared with paired t test. Results: All patients were followed-up for 28±5 months (24-38 months). The TK and LL improved significantly postoperatively from 15.6°±7.8° and 67.3°±12.2° to 28.1°±6.2° and 48.1°±9.3°(t=-6.985, 6.968, both P<0.05), and maintained at 27.3°±6.9° and 49.4°±7.9° at last follow-up, respectively. The TLK and FK improved significantly postoperatively from 29.4°±12.2° and 36.4°±9.5° to 7.7°±5.3° and 5.6°±4.2°(t=9.083, 16.510, both P<0.05), with a correction loss of 2.4°±2.0° and 2.3°±2.2° at final follow-up, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the PI, PT, SS and SVA among preoperative, post-operative and the last follow-up data.In addition, the VAS and ODI improved significantly at the final follow-up.Four cases with Frankel D experienced complete neurological recovery at the final follow-up.Radiographic evaluation showed solid bony fusion. No instrument-related complication was observed during the follow up. Conclusions: The SRS-Schwab grade Ⅳ osteotomy brings satisfactory sagittal alignment and good clinical outcomes in patients with PTK.

Abstract
Mosquito surveillance studies to identify mosquito-borne flaviviruses have identified West Nile Virus (WNV) for the first time in Zambia. The Zambian WNV isolate from Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes collected in the Western Province was closely related genetically to WNV lineage 2 South African strains which have been previously shown to be highly neuroinvasive. These data provide the first evidence of the circulation of WNV in Zambia and suggest there should be an increased awareness of possible associated human and animal diseases in that country.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examined the efficacy and safety of adjunctive N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant drug, in treating major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. METHODS The PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CNKI, CBM, and WanFang databases were independently searched and screened by two researchers. Standardized mean differences (SMDs), risk ratios, and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed. RESULTS Six RCTs (n = 701) of NAC for schizophrenia (three RCTs, n = 307), bipolar disorder (two RCTs, n = 125), and MDD (one RCT, n = 269) were identified and analyzed as separate groups. Adjunctive NAC significantly improved total psychopathology (SMD = -0.74, 95% CI: -1.43, -0.06; I2 = 84%, P = 0.03) in schizophrenia, but it had no significant effect on depressive and manic symptoms as assessed by the Young Mania Rating Scale in bipolar disorder and only a small effect on major depressive symptoms. Adverse drug reactions to NAC and discontinuation rates between the NAC and control groups were similar across the three disorders. CONCLUSIONS Adjunctive NAC appears to be a safe treatment that has efficacy for schizophrenia, but not for bipolar disorder or MDD. Further higher quality RCTs are warranted to determine the role of adjunctive NAC in the treatment of major psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Samarium hexaboride (SmB6) is a Kondo insulator, with a narrow gap due to hybridization between localized and conduction electrons. Despite being an insulator, many samples show metal-like properties. Rare-earth purification is exceedingly difficult, and nominally pure samples may contain 2% or more of impurities. Here to determine the effects of rare-earth doping on SmB6, we synthesized and probed a series of gadolinium-doped samples. We found a relationship between specific heat and impurity moment screening which scales systematically. Consistent with this finding, our neutron scattering experiments of a high purity sample of doubly isotopic 154Sm11B6 show no intrinsic excitations below the well-established 13 meV spin-exciton. The result of introducing impurities into a Kondo insulator is incompletely understood, but it is clear from our measurements that there is a systematic relationship between rare-earth impurities and metal-like properties in SmB6. The unconventional behaviour of samarium hexaboride has been difficult to explain in part because of differences between samples. Here the authors use gadolinium to exemplify that hard to avoid impurities introduce a low energy density of states that may explain earlier observations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) has gradually become the main approach to obtain live donor kidneys. However, the shorter right renal vein limits its wider application. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of left- and right-side retroperitoneal LDN. METHODS We reviewed the perioperative data of 527 consecutive donors receiving retroperitoneal pure LDN with a new method at our center between April 2009 and April 2014. The patients were divided into group A (the first 100 patients) and group B (the remaining 427 patients). A total of 423 cases of left donor surgery and 104 cases of right donor surgery were compared. The comparison of the laterality of LDN was also performed between group A and group B. RESULTS This is currently the largest case series of LDN in our country. Although right-side LDN patients had longer operation time and a slightly higher incidence of intraoperative complications compared with left-side LDN patients, the operation time was shorter in both the groups compared with previous reports. In group B, patients undergoing right-side LDN had longer operation time and more frequent complications. Once the learning curve of 100 cases was completed, the incidence of complications and operation time were greatly reduced in both sides for LDN. There was no significant difference in the serum creatinine levels in recipients at 6 months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Despite a slightly higher incidence of complications and longer operation time, right-side LDN can achieve equally safe and effective transplantation outcomes. This expands the source of potential donor kidneys.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the correction result of traditional dual growing rods on apical vertebral rotation. Methods: This study recruited 19 early-onset scoliosis patients (6 boys and 13 girls) who had received traditional dual growing rods treatment at Department of Spine Surgery, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from January 2009 to July 2015. The age at initial surgery was (5.7±1.7)years(range, 3 to 9 years). Measurements of primary curve magnitude, height of T(1)-S(1), apical vertebral translation(AVR), apical vertebral body-rib ratio, apical vertebral rotation, thoracic rotation and rib hump were compared between pre-operatively, post-operatively, and at latest follow-up, through a paired-t test. Pearson correlation test was used for correlation analysis between parameters. Results: All patients had a follow-up of (49.5±12.8)months(range, 24 to 71 months). A total of 111 operative procedures were performed, among which there were 92 lengthening procedures, averagely 4.8 lengthening procedures per patient. The average interval for each lengthening procedure was 10 months. The Cobb angle of primary curve was notably decreased from (66.5±13.2)° to (35.2±10.9)°(t=24.013, P<0.01), and no significant correction loss was found at the latest follow-up ((36.7±10.7)°)(t=-1.324, P=0.202). In addition, significant correction of AVR, thoracic rotation, apical vertebral translation, apical vertebra body-rib ratio, and rib hump were noted after initial surgery. Whereas, these parameters significant increased during follow-up(all P <0.05) except for thoracic rotation. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the increase of AVR during follow-up significantly correlated with change of apical vertebra translation, apical vertebral body-rib ratio, and rib hump(r=0.652, 0.814, 0.695; all P<0.05). Conclusions: Significant correction of AVR can be achieved after initial surgery in early-onset scoliosis patients treated with traditional dual growing rods. However, such a technique can hardly prevent the deterioration of AVR during follow-up.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to observe sperm aneuploidy, DNA integrity, seminal alpha-glucosidase (NAG) and acrosin activity (AA) under testicular heat stress (SH). Spermatozoa were obtained from 30 healthy adult volunteers subjected to scrotal warming at 43°C for 30-40 min on two successive days per week for 3 months between February 2012 and September 2016. Aniline blue (AB), acridine orange (AO) staining, TUNEL assay and FISH analysis to evaluate sperm function, sperm DNA integrity and chromosomal abnormalities were carried on before, during and after SH. Sperm AA and NAG was measured by microplate reader. The mean parameters of sperm parameters, AA and NAG were significantly decreased. In contrast, the mean percentage of sperm DNA fragmentation and the proportion of aneuploidy of chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X and Y were significantly increased for spermatozoa collected during SH versus before SH (p < .01-.001). After stopping scrotal heating for 3 months, most parameters were completely restored to pre-SH levels. Sperm parameters, sperm DNA integrity, chromosomes, AA and NAG are affected by scrotal exposure to constant SH temperatures several degrees over normal physiological temperature, and after treatment, these parameters were reversibly restored to the level before SH in adult men.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the pulmonary function between adolescent patients with Chiari malformation associated scoliosis (CMS) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 52 patients with CMS, and 52 patients with AIS were selected as the control group to match the CMS patients by age, sex, and Cobb angle. Preoperative pulmonary function tests were completed by all the patients, including vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), and ratio of FEV(1) to FVC. The difference of pulmonary function parameters was analyzed between the two groups; Correlation between pulmonary function and radiographic parameters was analyzed in patients with CMS. Results: There were no significant differences in terms of sex, age, and the main coronal Cobb angle between the two groups. There were 42(80.7%) and 44(84.6%) of patients with restrictive ventilatory dysfunction (the percentage of predicted FVC<80%) in CMS and AIS group respectively. 18(42.8%) and 10 (22.7%) out of these patients were also with obstructive ventilation dysfunction (FEV(1)/FVC<92%) in CMS and AIS group respectively. Types of ventilation dysfunction distributed between the two groups had no significant difference (P>0.05). No significant difference was noted between the two groups in the percentage of predicted VC, FVC, FEV(1) and FEV(1)/FVC (P>0.05). The percentage of predicted MMEF in patients with CMS was lower compared to those with AIS[(57.9±13.3)% vs (67.2±23.3)%, P=0.053]. In patients with CMS, the percentage of predicted VC, FVC, FEV(1) and MMEF had significantly negative correlation with the number of vertebrae involved (P<0.01). Main coronal Cobb angle had negative correlation with the percentage of predicted VC, FVC and FEV(1) (P<0.05). The percentage of predicted VC, FVC and FEV(1) had positive correlation with thoracic kyphosis (P<0.05). Conclusions: There are no significant differences in characteristics of the pulmonary dysfunction between patients with AIS and CMS without obviously neural deficit. Both groups mainly present with restrictive ventilation dysfunction.

Abstract
The O/Middle East-South Asia (ME-SA)/Ind-2001 lineage of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is endemic in the Indian subcontinent and has been reported in the Middle East and North Africa, but it had not been detected in South-East Asia (SEA) before 2015. This study reports the recent incursions of this viral lineage into SEA, which caused outbreaks in Vientiane Capital of Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) in April 2015, in Dak Nong, Dak Lak and Ninh Thuan Provinces of Vietnam from May to October 2015, and in Rakhine State of Myanmar in October 2015. Disease investigations were conducted during the outbreaks and followed up after laboratory results confirmed the involvement of FMDV O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 sublineage d (O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d). Affected host species included cattle, buffalo and pig, and all the outbreaks resolved within 2 months. Animals with clinical signs were separated, and affected premises were disinfected. However, strict movement restrictions were not enforced, and emergency vaccinations were only implemented in Vientiane Capital of Lao PDR and Dak Nong and Ninh Thuan Provinces of Vietnam. Clinical samples were collected from each outbreak and examined by nucleotide sequencing of the FMDV viral protein 1 coding region. Sequence analysis revealed that the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d isolates from Lao PDR and Vietnam were closely related to each other and similar to viruses previously circulating in India in 2013. Viruses collected from Myanmar were divergent from viruses of the same sublineage recovered from Lao PDR and Vietnam but were closely related to viruses present in Bangladesh in 2015. These findings imply that at least two independent introductions of O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d into SEA have occurred. Our study highlights the transboundary nature of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and reinforces the importance of improved FMD surveillance and promotion of safer cross-border trade in SEA to control the risk of introduction and spread of exotic FMDV strains.

Abstract
Summary
Objective:
In order to ensure the successful implementation of a nursing information system (NIS), nurses and nursing students must be adequately trained. In order to do this effectively, it is essential to understand their training needs. This study focuses on the training needs of nursing students in particular through the identification of the usage problems they encounter. Usability testing, which involves observing users’ interaction with an NIS, overcomes the deficiencies of traditional approaches of training needs analysis such as interviewand survey. The study applied usability test to assess training needs of nursing students to learn to use a specific NIS, the “Care Planning Assessment Tool” (CPAT).
Methods:
An experiment in which novice CPAT users were expected to learn to use the software through task-based exploration was conducted. Eight nursing undergraduate students who had never used the software were recruited. Participants’ interactionswith the system were captured by screen capture software. Meanwhile, participants’ “think aloud” verbal expression of their usage problems was audio-taped.
Results:
A coding schemewas used in analysing the captured audio and video data. Ten common usage problems were identified. From these problems, three areas of knowledge gap that this cohort of novice users experienced were identified.
Conclusion:
The training needs of nursing students learning to use an NIS was conceptualised in a model consisting of three types of knowledge, i.e. computer skills, knowledge about the NIS and knowledge about procedure of nursing documentation. The knowledge gap must be filled in order to ensure effective training.

Abstract
Although the prophylaxis in controlling sterility within the operating room environment has been greatly improved, implant-associated infection is still one of the most serious complications in implant surgeries due to the existence of immune depression in the peri-implant area. The antibacterial ability of materials themselves logically becomes an important factor in preventing implant-associated infections. With the understanding of the pathogenesis of implant-associated infections, many approaches have been developed through providing an anti-adhesive surface, delivering antibacterial agents to disrupt cell-cell communication and preventing bacteria aggregation or biofilm formation, or killing bacteria directly (lysing the cell membrane). In this article, we review the current strategies in improving the antibacterial ability of materials to prevent implant infection and further present promising tactics in materials design and applications.

Thumb Ossification Composite Index (TOCI) for Predicting Peripubertal Skeletal Maturity and Peak Height Velocity in Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Validation Study of Premenarchal Girls with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Followed Longitudinally Until Skeletal Maturity. Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate skeletal maturity assessment is important to guide clinical evaluation of idiopathic scoliosis, but commonly used methods are inadequate or too complex for rapid clinical use. The objective of the study was to propose a new simplified staging method, called the thumb ossification composite index (TOCI), based on the ossification pattern of the 2 thumb epiphyses and the adductor sesamoid bone; to determine its accuracy in predicting skeletal maturation when compared with the Sanders simplified skeletal maturity system (SSMS); and to validate its interrater and intrarater reliability. METHODS Hand radiographs of 125 girls, acquired when they were newly diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis prior to menarche and during longitudinal follow-up until skeletal maturity (a minimum of 4 years), were scored with the TOCI and SSMS. These scores were compared with digital skeletal age (DSA) and radius, ulna, and small hand bones (RUS) scores; anthropometric data; peak height velocity; and growth-remaining profiles. Correlations were analyzed with the chi-square test, Spearman and Cramer V correlation methods, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Reliability analysis using the intraclass correlation (ICC) was conducted. RESULTS Six hundred and forty-five hand radiographs (average, 5 of each girl) were scored. The TOCI staging system was highly correlated with the DSA and RUS scores (r = 0.93 and 0.92, p < 0.01). The mean peak height velocity (and standard deviation) was 7.43 ± 1.45 cm/yr and occurred at a mean age of 11.9 ± 0.86 years, with 70.1% and 51.4% of the subjects attaining their peak height velocity at TOCI stage 5 and SSMS stage 3, respectively. The 2 systems predicted peak height velocity with comparable accuracy, with a strong Cramer V association (0.526 and 0.466, respectively; p < 0.01) and similar sensitivity and specificity on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The mean age at menarche was 12.57 ± 1.12 years, with menarche occurring over several stages in both the TOCI and the SSMS. The growth remaining predicted by TOCI stage 8 matched well with that predicted by SSMS stage 7, with a mean of <2 cm/yr of growth potential over a mean of <1.7 years at these stages. The TOCI also demonstrated excellent reliability, with an overall ICC of >0.97. CONCLUSIONS The new proposed TOCI could provide a simplified staging system for the assessment of skeletal maturity of subjects with idiopathic scoliosis. The index needs to be subjected to further multicenter validation in different ethnic groups.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the correlated factors of height gain (ΔSH) after posterior spinal correction surgery in Lenke 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), and to propose the predictive model of ΔSH. Methods: From 2013 to 2015, a total of 150 Lenke 1 AIS patients undergoing posterior spinal correction surgery were included in the study, with the age of (14.3±2.9) years. The Cobb angle of major curve, thoracic kyphosis (TK) and lumbar lordosis (LL) were measured on both pre-op and post-op standing whole spine x-rays. The change in Cobb angle, TK and LL were calculated. The difference between pre-operation and post-operation was compared and the linear regression analysis was used for the predictive model of ΔSH. Results: The pre-op and post-op values were (41.6±3.0)cm and (43.9±2.7)cm for spinal height (SH)[ΔSH=(2.4±0.8)cm, P=0.000]; (50.5±10.4)° and (14.6±6.4)° for Cobb angle (P=0.000). The Pearson correlation analysis showed that ΔSH was significantly correlated with pre-op SH (P=0.000), pre-op Cobb angle (P=0.000), pre-op TK (P=0.000), post-op SH (P=0.020), post-op Cobb angle (P=0.000), change in Cobb angle (P=0.000) and change in TK (P=0.000). The linear regression model 1 revealed that ΔSH was linearly correlated with change in Cobb angle (P=0.000) as well as change in TK (P=0.000); the linear regression model 2 showed that the pre-op Cobb angle (P=0.000) and pre-op TK (P=0.020) could be used for the pre-op prediction of ΔSH. Conclusions: The positively correlated factors of ΔSH include pre-op and post-op Cobb angle, TK, change in Cobb angle and change in TK. High pre-op Cobb angle and TK indicates high height gain in Lenke 1 AIS patients.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of tea and coffee intakes on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) stratified by milk intake. Methods: A case-control study involving 593 OSCC patients confirmed by pathological diagnoses and 1 128 gender-age frequency matched controls was conducted in Fujian province during September 2010-March 2016. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the effects of coffee, tea intakes and related variables on OSCC. Additive interaction was estimated by relative excess risk interaction (RERI), attributable proportions interaction (API) and synergy index (SI). Results: Tea intake was significantly associated with decreased risk of OSCC: the adjusted ORs were 0.54 for all subjects (95%CI: 0.41-0.71), 0.47 for milk consumers (95%CI: 0.31-0.71) and 0.57 for non-milk consumers (95%CI: 0.40-0.81). Moreover, starting tea drinking at age ≥25 years, moderate tea concentration and water temperature, drinking green tea and oolong tea showed effects to decrease the risk for OSCC in three groups. Additionally, there was a tendency of a reduced risk with increased daily tea drinking and longer tea-drinking period (all trend P<0.05). No significant association was observed between coffee intake and OSCC. A multiplicative but not additive interactions was found between tea drinking and milk intake. Additionally, we did not observe multiplicative and additive interaction between coffee drinking and milk intake. Conclusion: Tea drinking is a protective factor for OSCC, and there is a multiplicative interaction between tea drinking and milk intake. Therefore, tea drinking and increasing intake of milk can reduce the risk of OSCC at certain extent.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical outcomes and the accuracy of O-arm-navigation system assisted pedicle screw insertion in dystrophic scoliosis secondary to neurofibromatosis type Ⅰ(NF-1). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 41 patients with dystrophic NF-1-associated thoracic scoliosis who were surgically treated at Department of Orthopaedics, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School between June 2012 and October 2014 with more than 18 months follow-up. The patients were then divided into two groups: 18 patients were under the assistance of O-arm-navigation-based pedicle screw insertion (O-arm group) and the remaining 23 patients' pedicle screws insertion were conducted by free-hand (free-hand group). The X-ray and CT were analyzed to investigate the correction rate and safety of pedicle insertion. t-test was used to analyze measurement data and χ(2) test was used to analyze accuracy of screw insertion between the two groups. Results: The mean coronal Cobb angle was 63.2°±8.7° in the O-arm group and 66.9°±7.4° in the free-hand group (P>0.05), which was then corrected into 23.1°±6.8° and 30.2°±7.6°(t=2.231, P=0.031) after surgery respectively.Operation time was (265.0±70.3)minutes and estimated blood loss was (1 024±465)ml in the O-arm group. Operation time and estimated blood loss was (243.0±49.6)minutes and (1 228±521)ml respectively in the free-hand group, which had no significant difference between the two groups. However, the implant density was higher in the O-arm group than that in the free-hand group ((64.1±10.8)% vs.(44.3±15.3)%)(t=4.652, P=0.000). The O-arm group comprised 122 screws, of which 72.9% were excellent, 22.1% were good and 4.9% were bad. The free-hand group comprised 136 screws and 48.5% of them were excellent, 33.8% were good and 17.6% were bad.Accuracy of pedicle screw insertion was higher in the O-arm group than that in the free-hand group(χ(2)=10.140, P<0.05). By June 2016, the average follow-up period was (20.9±3.4)months(ranging from18 to 26 months), including (20.3±3.1)months in the O-arm group and (21.4±5.5)months in the free-hand group. At last follow-up point, coronal correction loss was significantly higher in the free-hand group than that in the O-arm group (6.3°±2.6° vs. 4.4°±1.6°)(t=2.719, P=0.009). Conclusions: Compared with free-hand technique, O-arm-navigation technique could enhance accuracy of pedicle insertion and implant density of dystrophic region in dystrophic NF-1-associated scoliosis patients, which result in a better correction rate and less correction loss. Besides, the advantage of O-arm-navigation do not increase operative time and estimate blood loss.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects between fish, seafood and pickled food intakes on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: A case-control study was carried out in Fujian area during September 2010 to December 2016, in which 604 newly diagnosed primary OSCC cases confirmed by pathological diagnosis were collected from hospital and 1 343 control subjects were enrolled from community and healthy hospital population. Demographic data, history of smoking drinking and tea drinking, oral hygiene status and dietary behaviors (fish, seafood and pickled food intakes) were collected by in-person interviews using a standard questionnaire.Using unconditional logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the effects of fish, seafood and pickled food intakes on OSCC. Analysis stratified by smoking, alcohol drinking and bad prosthesis to explore the possible difference in association between subgroups. Multiplicative interactions and additive interactions between fish and bad prosthesis, seafood and alcohol drinking, pickled food and bad prosthesis were assessed by unconditional logistic regression, relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) and synergy index (S). Results: The average age of case group and control group were separately (58.69±13.92) years old and (59.27±11.37) years old (χ(2)=4.75, P=0.191). The people whose fish and seafood intakes ≥3 times/week had the lower risk of OSCC, the adjusted OR (95%CI) values were 0.63 (0.52-0.77) and 0.51 (0.41-0.64); The stratified analysis indicated that the people having bad prosthesis had the lower risk of OSCC if they eating fish ≥3 times/week, and the adjusted OR (95%CI) values was 0.53 (0.39-0.71); the people having bad prosthesis had the higher risk of OSCC if they eating pickled food ≥3 times/week, the adjusted OR (95%CI) values was 1.37 (1.02-1.88). Regularly eating seafood can decrease the risk of OSCC for non-smokers, smokers, non-drinkers, drinkers, people without bad prosthesis and had bad prosthesis, the adjusted OR (95%CI) values were 0.49 (0.36-0.68), 0.52 (0.37-0.73), 0.41 (0.31-0.55), 0.77 (0.51-0.96), 0.49 (0.36-0.67), 0.59 (0.42-0.83). Crossover analysis showed fish and bad prosthesis exist multiplication interaction relationship (adjusted OR=0.66, 95%CI: 0.44-0.97) and additional interaction relationship (RERI=-0.81, 95%CI:-1.43--0.19; AP=-0.76, 95%CI:-1.35--0.17; S=0.08, 95%CI: 0.01-0.98); pickled food and bad prosthesis exist multiplication interaction relationship (adjusted OR=1.63, 95%CI: 1.06-2.51) and addition interaction relationship (RERI=0.65, 95%CI:0.08-1.22; AP=0.36, 95%CI:0.10-0.62; S=5.19, 95%CI:1.32-54.49). Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed to study spin dynamics in the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet α-Cu_{2}V_{2}O_{7}. For the first time, nonreciprocal magnons were experimentally measured in an antiferromagnet. These nonreciprocal magnons are caused by the incompatibility between anisotropic exchange and antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which arise from broken symmetry, resulting in a collinear ordered state but helical spin dynamics. The nonreciprocity introduces the difference in the phase velocity of the counterrotating modes, causing the opposite spontaneous magnonic Faraday rotation of the left- and right-propagating spin waves. The breaking of spatial inversion and time reversal symmetry is revealed as a magnetic-field-induced asymmetric energy shift, which provides a test for the detailed balance relation.

Abstract
The notion of a quasiparticle, such as a phonon, a roton or a magnon, is used in modern condensed matter physics to describe an elementary collective excitation. The intrinsic zero-temperature magnon damping in quantum spin systems can be driven by the interaction of the one-magnon states and multi-magnon continuum. However, detailed experimental studies on this quantum many-body effect induced by an applied magnetic field are rare. Here we present a high-resolution neutron scattering study in high fields on an S=1/2 antiferromagnet C9H18N2CuBr4. Compared with the non-interacting linear spin–wave theory, our results demonstrate a variety of phenomena including field-induced renormalization of one-magnon dispersion, spontaneous magnon decay observed via intrinsic linewidth broadening, unusual non-Lorentzian two-peak structure in the excitation spectra and a dramatic shift of spectral weight from one-magnon state to the two-magnon continuum. Spontaneous magnon decay in canted antiferromagnets has been theoretically investigated extensively, but experimental evidence is limited. Here the authors study the spin ½ antiferromagnet DLCB via neutron scattering, revealing field-induced spontaneous magnon decay associated with three-magnon interactions.

Abstract
Toll-like receptor-3 (TLR3) priming may enhance mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) immunosuppressive activity, but this mechanism has not been investigated in the context of inflammatory bowel disease. Thus, we assessed the immunosuppressive properties of TLR3-primed MSCs using a trinitrobenzene sulfonate (TNBS)-induced mouse model of colitis. Intraperitoneally injected polyribocytidylic acid (poly (I:C)- (a ligand of TLR3) primed human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) migrated to the inflamed colon and effectively improved clinical and pathological manifestations in colitic mice compared with mice treated with unstimulated hUC-MSCs (UCMs). Poly (I:C)-MSCs decreased a wide range of inflammatory cytokines and increased systemic interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in colonic tissues. Poly (I:C)-MSCs also impaired T-helper type 1/17 (Th1/17) cell expansion and enhanced the suppressive effects of regulatory T cells (Treg) in vitro and in vivo. Poly (I:C)-MSCs suppressed the proliferation of activated mesenteric lymph node (MLN) cells via the overproduction of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and upregulation of Jagged-1. PGE2 produced by hUC-MSCs in response to poly (I:C) increased the production of IL-10 and promoted the differentiation of Treg, which could be reversed by inhibition of Notch-1. Collectively, preconditioning MSCs with poly (I:C) enhanced the therapeutic effects of hUC-MSCs in TNBS-induced colitis, and TLR3-activated Notch-1 signaling regulated the immune suppression of hUC-MSCs through the production of PGE2.

Abstract
Tamsulosin has been used for the off-label treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in women. Over the past few years, several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported the clinical effectiveness and safety of tamsulosin for LUTS in women. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of tamsulosin in treating LUTS in women, which may resolve some of the current controversies over use of the drug and provide more reliable evidence for the use of tamsulosin. A literature review was performed to identify all published RCTs of tamsulosin for the treatment of LUTS in women. The search included the following databases: PUBMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Controlled Trail Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Science and Technique Journals Database (VIP) and Wanfang Database. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Six RCTs studies involving 764 female participants were included in the analysis. Four out of the six RCTs compared tamsulosin with placebo, one RCT compared tamsulosin with prazosin and the other study compared tamsulosin with tamsulosin combined with tolterodine. Two RCTs evaluated total International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and improved total IPSS compared with the placebo (standardized mean difference=-4.08, 95% confidence interval=-5.93 to -2.23, P<0.00001). IPSS (storage symptom score), IPSS (voiding symptom score) and quality-of-life score also showed the similar effects. In addition, tamsulosin improved the Overactive Bladder Questionnaire score when compared with placebo in only one RCT. For urodynamic parameters, tamsulosin improved the average flow rate and the post-void residual volume when compared with prazosin and tolterodine combined with tamsulosin, respectively. Beyond that, the other parameters showed no significant difference between the treatment and control groups. On the basis of the present evidence, tamsulosin is an effective treatment for the relief of LUTS in women when compared with placebo. However, the safety of the tamsulosin remains unknown. Further, well-conducted trials that examine long-term outcomes are required.

Disordered Route to the Coulomb Quantum Spin Liquid: Random Transverse Fields on Spin Ice in Pr_{2}Zr_{2}O_{7}. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:107206. Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering reveals a broad continuum of excitations in Pr_{2}Zr_{2}O_{7}, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of which indicate a continuous distribution of quenched transverse fields (Δ) acting on the non-Kramers Pr^{3+} crystal field ground state doublets. Spin-ice correlations are apparent within 0.2 meV of the Zeeman energy. A random phase approximation provides an excellent account of the data with a transverse field distribution ρ(Δ)∝(Δ^{2}+Γ^{2})^{-1}, where Γ=0.27(1) meV. Established during high temperature synthesis due to an underlying structural instability, it appears disorder in Pr_{2}Zr_{2}O_{7} actually induces a quantum spin liquid.
