Hybridization of MOFs and COFs: A New Strategy for Construction of MOF@COF Core-Shell Hybrid Materials

The exploration of new porous hybrid materials is of great importance because of their unique properties and promising applications in separation of materials, catalysis, etc. Herein, for the first time, by integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a new type of MOF@COF core-shell hybrid material, i.e., NH₂ -MIL-68@TPA-COF, with high crystallinity and hierarchical pore structure, is synthesized. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained NH₂ -MIL-68@TPA-COF hybrid material is used as an effective visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B. The synthetic strategy in this study opens up a new avenue for the construction of other MOF-COF hybrid materials, which could have various promising applications.

Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Multinary Layered Metal Chalcogenide Nanomaterials

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS₂ , WS₂ , TiS₂ , TaS₂ , ReS₂ , MoSe₂ and WSe₂ , have attracted considerable attention over the past six years owing to their unique properties and great potential in a wide range of applications. Aiming to achieve tunable properties and optimal application performances, great effort is devoted to the exploration of 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials, which include ternary metal chalcogenides with well-defined crystal structures, alloyed TMDs, heteroatom-doped TMDs and 2D metal chalcogenide heteronanostructures. These novel 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials exhibit some unique properties compared to 2D binary TMD counterparts, thus holding great promise in various potential applications including electronics/optoelectronics, catalysis, sensors, biomedicine, and energy storage and conversion with enhanced performances. This article focuses on the state-of-art progress on the preparation, characterization and applications of ultrathin 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials.

Controllable Synthesis of Atomically Thin Type-II Weyl Semimetal WTe2 Nanosheets: An Advanced Electrode Material for All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitors

Compared with 2D S-based and Se-based transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), Te-based TMDs display much better electrical conductivities, which will be beneficial to enhance the capacitances in supercapacitors. However, to date, the reports about the applications of Te-based TMDs in supercapacitors are quite rare. Herein, the first supercapacitor example of the Te-based TMD is reported: the type-II Weyl semimetal 1Td WTe₂ . It is demonstrated that single crystals of 1Td WTe₂ can be exfoliated into the nanosheets with 2-7 layers by liquid-phase exfoliation, which are assembled into air-stable films and further all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors. The resulting supercapacitors deliver a mass capacitance of 221 F g^-1 and a stack capacitance of 74 F cm^-3 . Furthermore, they also show excellent volumetric energy and power densities of 0.01 Wh cm^-3 and 83.6 W cm^-3 , respectively, superior to the commercial 4V/500 µAh Li thin-film battery and the commercial 3V/300 µAh Al electrolytic capacitor, in association with outstanding mechanical flexibility and superior cycling stability (capacitance retention of ≈91% after 5500 cycles). These results indicate that the 1Td WTe₂ nanosheet is a promising flexible electrode material for high-performance energy storage devices.

High-Yield Synthesis of Crystal-Phase-Heterostructured 4H/fcc Au@Pd Core-Shell Nanorods for Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Noble-metal nanomaterials are attracting increasing research interest due to their promising applications in electrochemical catalysis, for example. Although great efforts have been devoted to the size-, shape-, and architecture-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanomaterials, their crystal-phase-controlled synthesis is still in its infancy. Here, for the first time, this study reports high-yield synthesis of Au nanorods (NRs) with alternating 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal-phase heterostructures via a one-pot wet-chemical method. The coexistence of 4H and fcc phases is relatively stable, and the 4H/fcc Au NRs can serve as templates for crystal-phase-controlled epitaxial growth of other metals. As an example, bimetallic 4H/fcc Au@Pd core-shell NRs are synthesized via the epitaxial growth of Pd on 4H/fcc Au NRs. Significantly, the 4H/fcc Au@Pd NRs show superior mass activity toward the ethanol oxidation reaction, i.e., 6.2 and 4.9 times those of commercial Pd black and Pt/C catalysts, respectively. It is believed that this new synthetic strategy can be used to prepare other novel catalysts for various promising applications.

Growth of Au Nanoparticles on 2D Metalloporphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets Used as Biomimetic Catalysts for Cascade Reactions

Inspired by the multiple functions of natural multienzyme systems, a new kind of hybrid nanosheet is designed and synthesized, i.e., ultrasmall Au nanoparticles (NPs) grown on 2D metalloporphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. Since 2D metalloporphyrinic MOF nanosheets can act as the peroxidase mimics and Au NPs can serve as artificial glucose oxidase, the hybrid nanosheets are used to mimic the natural enzymes and catalyze the cascade reactions. Furthermore, the synthesized hybrid nanosheets are used to detect biomolecules, such as glucose. This study paves a new avenue to design nanomaterial-based biomimetic catalysts with multiple complex functions.

Synthesis of Ultrathin PdCu Alloy Nanosheets Used as a Highly Efficient Electrocatalyst for Formic Acid Oxidation

Inspired by the unique properties of ultrathin 2D nanomaterials and excellent catalytic activities of noble metal nanostructures for renewable fuel cells, a facile method is reported for the high-yield synthesis of ultrathin 2D PdCu alloy nanosheets under mild conditions. Impressively, the obtained PdCu alloy nanosheet after being treated with ethylenediamine can be used as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for formic acid oxidation. The study implicates that the rational design and controlled synthesis of an ultrathin 2D noble metal alloy may open up new opportunities for enhancing catalytic activities of noble metal nanostructures.

Ternary Chalcogenide Nanosheets with Ultrahigh Photothermal Conversion Efficiency for Photoacoustic Theranostics

2D materials (TDMs) have been explored for photonic theranostics. To achieve deep-tissue penetration, near-infrared (NIR) light is essential for photoacoustic (PA) theranostics. However, because the absorption profiles of existing TDMs are generally featureless with no obvious NIR absorption peaks, their PA signals and therapeutic efficacies are limited. This paper herein reports the synthesis and application of ternary chalcogenide nanosheets (Ta₂ NiS₅ -P) for PA theranostics. In contrast to the current TDMs for such application, Ta₂ NiS₅ -P has a ternary instead of binary composition. This difference brings in the strong and featured NIR for Ta₂ NiS₅ -P. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first example using ternary chalcogenide nanosheets for such application; moreover, the photothermal conversion efficiency of Ta₂ NiS₅ -P is the highest (35%) among all the reported TDMs based on the same calculation method. These advantages allow Ta₂ NiS₅ -P to passively target, effectively delineate, and completely eradicate the tumor of living mice after systemic administration.

Thyroid abnormalities following the use of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 and programmed death receptor protein-1 inhibitors in the treatment of melanoma

CONTEXT

Checkpoint inhibitors are emerging as important cancer therapies but are associated with a high rate of immune side effects, including endocrinopathy.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the burden of thyroid dysfunction in patients with melanoma treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors and describe the clinical course.

DESIGN AND PATIENTS

Consecutive patients with melanoma treated with either ipilimumab, nivolumab, pembrolizumab or the combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab were identified. Baseline thyroid function tests were used to exclude those with pre-existing thyroid abnormalities, and thyroid function tests during treatment used to identify those with thyroid dysfunction.

RESULTS

Rates of overt thyroid dysfunction were in keeping with the published phase 3 trials. Hypothyroidism occurred in 13·0% treated with a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) inhibitor and 22·2% with a combination of PD-1 inhibitor and ipilimumab. Transient subclinical hyperthyroidism was observed in 13·0% treated with a PD-1 inhibitor, 15·9% following a PD-1 inhibitor, and 22·2% following combination treatment with investigations suggesting a thyroiditic mechanism rather than Graves' disease, and a high frequency of subsequent hypothyroidism. Any thyroid abnormality occurred in 23·0% following ipilimumab, 39·1% following a PD-1 inhibitor and 50% following combination treatment. Abnormal thyroid function was more common in female patients.

CONCLUSION

Thyroid dysfunction occurs commonly in patients with melanoma treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, with rates, including subclinical dysfunction, occurring in up to 50%.

Validation of daily increment deposition and early growth of mud carp Cirrhinus molitorella

In this study, laboratory reared Cirrhinus molitorella from hatching through to the juvenile stage were used to validate daily increment deposition. Lapilli were suitable for ageing C. molitorella. The slope of the linear relationships between increment counts and age was not significantly different from 1 (n = 258, P > 0·05), indicating that growth increments are deposited daily. The first increment following the first-feeding check formed 3 days post hatch (dph). One hundred and twenty-three juveniles, ranging from 36·4 to 84·7 mm in body length (L_B ), were collected in the Pear River estuary from July to January in both 2014 and 2015 and used to estimate growth rate. The core in the lapillus, consisting of a single primordium, a diffuse area and the first-feeding band, was followed by 20 narrow and poorly contrasted daily increments. Thereafter, increments were wide and well-defined, and, finally became less distinct, but still homogenous after c. 53 dph. The mean increment width increased to the 29th increment and stayed relatively constant up to the 35th increment and then, gradually declined to the edge of the otolith. Wild juveniles were aged from 69 to 178 dph and hatched from the 15 February to 2 September. Growth rate was estimated from the adjusted linear regression of L_B on age: L_B = 4·37 + 0·44A (r² = 0·60), where A = age. The radius of the core and the regularity and resolution of the increments showed some differences between reared and wild fish. These results are of value for the further study of early life traits and recruitment of C. molitorella.

Cobalt oxide and N-doped carbon nanosheets derived from a single two-dimensional metal-organic framework precursor and their application in flexible asymmetric supercapacitors

Based on a new "one for two" strategy, a single two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor has been transformed into both electrodes (i.e., a Co₃O₄ cathode and a N-doped carbon anode) for a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor. The device demonstrated not only highly robust mechanical flexibility but also outstanding electrochemical performance. The "one for two" concept can significantly ease the fabrication process and has great potential to be extended to other functional materials for different applications.

Single-Layer Ternary Chalcogenide Nanosheet as a Fluorescence-Based "Capture-Release" Biomolecular Nanosensor

The novel application of two-dimensional (2D) single-layer ternary chalcogenide nanosheets as "capture-release" fluorescence-based biomolecular nanosensors is demonstrated. Fluorescently labeled biomolecular probe is first captured by the ultrathin Ta₂ NiS₅ nanosheets and then released upon adding analyte containing a target biomolecule due to the higher probe-target affinity. Here, the authors use a nucleic acid probe for the model target biomolecule Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase, which is an important malarial biomarker. The ultrathin Ta₂ NiS₅ nanosheet serves as a highly efficient fluorescence quencher and the nanosensor developed from the nanosheet is highly sensitive and specific toward the target biomolecule. Apart from the specificity toward the target biomolecule in homogeneous solutions, the developed nanosensor is capable of detecting and differentiating the target in heterogeneous solutions consisting of either a mixture of biomolecules or serum, with exceptional specificity. The simplicity of the "capture-release" method, by eliminating the need for preincubation of the probe with the test sample, may facilitate further development of portable and rapid biosensors. The authors anticipate that this ternary chalcogenide nanosheet-based biomolecular nanosensor will be useful for the rapid detection and differentiation of a wide range of chemical and biological species.

Submonolayered Ru Deposited on Ultrathin Pd Nanosheets used for Enhanced Catalytic Applications

Ultrathin Pd nanosheets (NSs) coated with submonolayered Ru, referred to as Pd@Ru NSs, are synthesized via a seed-mediated growth method. The underpotential deposition can be the driving force for the formation of Pd@Ru NSs. The Pd@Ru NSs exhibit superior catalytic properties in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and the semihydrogenation of 1-octyne, compared to the pure Pd NSs and Ru NSs.

One-Pot Synthesis of Highly Anisotropic Five-Fold-Twinned PtCu Nanoframes Used as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction and Methanol Oxidation

Five-fold-twinned PtCu nanoframes (NFs) with nanothorns protruding from their edges are synthesized by a facile one-pot method. Compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst, the obtained highly anisotropic five-fold-twinned PtCu NFs show enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction under alkaline conditions.

Preparation of Single-Layer MoS(2x)Se2(1-x) and Mo(x)W(1-x)S2 Nanosheets with High-Concentration Metallic 1T Phase

The high-yield and scalable production of single-layer ternary transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets with ≈66% of metallic 1T phase, including MoS(2x)Se2(1-x) and Mo(x)W(1-x)S2 is achieved via electrochemical Li-intercalation and the exfoliation method. Thin film MoS(2x)Se2(1- x) nanosheets drop-cast on a fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate are used as an efficient electrocatalyst on the counter electrode for the tri-iodide reduction in a dye-sensitized solar cell.

Study on female breast cancer imaging screening consultation network in Guangdong Province, China

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to construct breast cancer image screening consultation network (BISCN) that connects all levels of medical institutions in Guangdong Province.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fourteen hospitals in different cities and counties (districts) of Guang-dong were selected for breast cancer screening with imaging (breast X-ray, ultrasound, and MRI). "Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS)" was taken as reference to build up image data base of breast cancer screening and BISCN that is an internet-based network platform. BISCN quality control was performed to improve the diagnostic accuracy and collaboration of members. In 2011, the BISCN members underwent breast imaging diagnosis training and conducted a questionnaire survey.

RESULTS

BISCN allowed quick, synchronous, and accurate communication and feedback of diagnostic imaging in breast cancer among all levels of medical institutions and improved the ability of breast cancer screening in the province, as well as the detection rate of early breast cancer throughout the province, especially in the grassroot units. The survey results showed that the trainees' understanding situation of the training contents before training was 2.02 ± 1.75 points. Through the study, the participants considered that the teaching contents could solve the daily diagnose problems (2.91 ± 0.70 points), the post-training scores were improved (2.88 ± 1.23 points), and highly satisfactory with the teaching contents (2.81 ± 0.53 points). All students passed the examination and were qualified for the future.

CONCLUSIONS

BISCN is of good feasibility in construction and applicability in management by raising diagnosis level of breast cancer in Guangdong Province.

Proliferation inhibition and CD4/CD8 thymocyte subset skewing by in vivo exposure of C57BL/6 mice to Ah receptor-binding 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl

3,3',4,4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) and other Ah receptor-binding xenobiotics lead to thymus atrophy and immunosuppression, the former possibly causing the latter. In order to better understand the TCB-induced events in the murine thymus, we analyzed the effects of TCB on the proliferation capacity and maturation kinetics of different thymocyte subsets in 2-week-old C57BL/6 mice (i.e. of the Ahb-1 'dioxin-sensitive' genotype). Mice were injected with a single dose of TCB, and the development of thymocytes was followed up for 10 days using flow cytometric surface marker analysis combined with measurement of DNA content by 7-amino-actinomycin D staining. Already 2 days after exposure to TCB, fewer of the more immature thymocytes (CD4-CD8-, CD4-CD8+ alpha beta TCR-) were proliferating than in thymi from control animals. Eventually this led to a severe decrease in thymus cellularity. Moreover, a shift towards the CD4-CD8+ mature subpopulation was observed. The effects were reversible, and proliferation and CD4/CD8 subset distribution returned to normal levels within the observation period. The results are in good agreement with the data obtained previously in vitro with fetal thymus organ cultures.
