Abstract
The heat-shock cognate 70 (HSC70) gene of humphead snapper, Lutjanus sanguineus, designated as ByHSC70, was cloned by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) with the primers designed from the known expressed sequence tag (EST) identified from the subtracted cDNA library of the head kidney of humphead snapper. The full-length cDNA of ByHSC70 is 2313 bp, containing a 5' terminal untranslated region (UTR) of 96 bp, a 3' terminal UTR of 267 bp, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 1950 bp encoding a polypeptide of 650 amino acids with a theoretical molecular weight of 71.21 kDa and an estimated isoelectric point (pI) of 5.08. ByHSC70 contained three classical HSP70 family signatures. BLAST analysis showed that the amino acid sequence of ByHSC70 had the highest similarity of 99% when compared with other HSC70s. Fluorescent real-time quantitative RT-PCR was used to examine the expression of ByHSC70 gene in eight kinds of tissues/organs of humphead snapper after challenge with Vibrio harveyi. There was a clear time-dependent expression pattern of ByHSC70 in head kidney, spleen and thymus after bacterial challenge, and the expression of mRNA reached a maximum level at 9, 6 and 24 h post-infection and then returned to control levels after 15, 24 and 36 h, respectively. Our results suggest that HSC70 is an important component in the immune system of humphead snapper, its their rapid transcriptional upregulation in response to V. harveyi infection might be important for survival of humphead snapper.

Abstract
The full-length cDNA of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) of humphead snapper Lutjanus sanguineus, designated as rsHSP90, was cloned by rapid amplification of complementary (c)DNA ends (RACE) techniques with the primers designed from the known expressed sequence tag (EST) sequence identified from the subtracted cDNA library of the head kidney of L. sanguineus. Sequence analysis showed that the full-length cDNA of rsHSP90 was 2745 bp, containing a 5' terminal untranslated region (UTR) of 99 bp, a 3' terminal UTR of 471 bp and an open reading frame (ORF) of 2175 bp encoding a polypeptide of 725 amino acids. On the basis of the deduced amino acid sequence, the theoretical molecular mass of rsHSP90 was calculated to be 83·18 kDa with an isoelectric point of 4·79. Moreover, five classical HSP90 family signatures were found in the amino acids sequence of rsHSP90 by PredictProtein. Basic local-alignment search-tool (BLAST) analysis revealed that the amino acids sequence of rsHSP90 had the highest similarity of 97% when compared with other HSP90s. Fluorescent real-time quantitative reverse-transcription (RT)-PCR was used to examine the expression pattern of rsHSP90 in eight kinds of tissues and organs of L. sanguineus challenged with Vibrio harveyi. There was a clear time-dependent expression pattern of rsHSP90 in head kidney, spleen and thymus after bacterial challenge and the expression of messenger (m)RNA reached the maximum level at the time points of 9, 15 and 24 h, respectively. The up-regulated mRNA expression of rsHSP90 in L. sanguineus after bacterial challenge indicated that rsHSP90 was inducible and might be involved in immune response.

Abstract
The 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-7 receptor began to be cloned and pharmacologically characterized close to 20 years ago. It couples positively via G-proteins to adenylyl cyclase and activation of this receptor increases neuronal excitability, and several studies have shown that degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway leads to an impairment of 5-HT system. Here we reported that systemic and local administration of 5-HT₇ receptor agonist AS 19 produced excitation, inhibition and no change in the firing rate of pyramidal neurons in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of normal and 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats. In normal rats, the mean response of the pyramidal neurons to AS 19 by systemic and local administration in mPFC was excitatory. The inhibitory effect by systemic administration of AS 19 was reversed by GABA(A) receptor antagonist picrotoxinin. Systemic administration of picrotoxinin excited all the neurons examined in normal rats, and after treatment with picrotoxinin, the local administration of AS 19 further increased the firing rate of the neurons. In the lesioned rats, systemic administration of AS 19, at the same doses, also increased the mean firing rate of the pyramidal neurons. However, cumulative dose producing excitation in the lesioned rats was higher than that of normal rats. Systemic administration of AS 19 produced inhibitory effect in the lesioned rats, which was partially reversed by picrotoxinin. The local administration of AS 19, at the same dose, did not change the firing rate of the neurons in the lesioned rats. Systemic administration of picrotoxinin and the local administration of AS 19 did not affect the firing rate of the neurons in the lesioned rats. These results indicate that activity of mPFC pyramidal neurons is regulated through activation of 5-HT₇ receptor by direct or indirect action, and degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway leads to decreased response of these neurons to AS 19, suggesting dysfunction and/or down-regulation of 5-HT₇ receptor on the pyramidal neurons and GABA interneurons in the lesioned rats.

Abstract
5-Hydroxytryptamine(1A) (5-HT(1A)) receptors are expressed in the prefrontal cortical interneurons. Among these interneurons, calcium-binding protein parvalbumin (PV)-positive fast spiking (FS) interneurons play an important role in regulatory function of the prefrontal cortex. In the present study, the response of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) FS interneurons to the selective 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT and change in expression of 5-HT(1A) receptor on PV-positive neurons were examined in rats with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) by using extracellular recording and double-labeling immunofluorescence histochemistry. Systemic administration of 8-OH-DPAT (1-243 μg/kg, i.v.) dose-dependently inhibited the mean firing rate of the FS interneurons in sham-operated and the lesioned rats, respectively. The cumulative doses producing inhibition in the lesioned rats (243 μg/kg) was significantly higher than that of sham-operated rats (27 μg/kg). Furthermore, the local application of 8-OH-DPAT (0.01 μg) in the mPFC inhibited the FS interneurons in sham-operated rats, while having no effect on firing rate of the FS interneurons in the lesioned rats. In contrast to sham-operated rats, the lesion of the SNc in rats did not cause the change of PV-positive neurons in the prelimbic prefrontal cortex, a subregion of the mPFC, whereas the lesion of the SNc markedly reduced in percentage of PV-positive neurons expressing 5-HT(1A) receptors. Our results indicate that degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway results in the decreased response of FS interneurons in the mPFC to 5-HT(1A) receptor stimulation, which attributes to down-regulation of 5-HT(1A) receptor expression in these interneurons.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of this study was to establish a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for the rapid, sensitive detection of Vibrio harveyi in mariculture shellfish. METHODS AND RESULTS A set of four primers, two outer and two inner primers, were designed from the toxR gene sequence of V. harveyi. The LAMP reaction was conducted at 65 degrees C for 60 min. There were no cross-reactions with other bacterial strains indicating a high specificity of the LAMP. The detection sensitivity of the LAMP assay for V. harveyi with both of pure cultures and added shellfish cultures is about 10(-5) dilution level (equivalent to 17.2 cells per reaction). The amplification products were detected by visual inspection using SYBR Green I. The detection sensitivity using the LAMP method was 10 times higher than that of conventional PCR. CONCLUSIONS The LAMP assay established in this study is an extremely specific, sensitive and rapid for identification of V. harveyi in mariculture shellfish. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This LAMP technique provides an important detecting tool for the detection of V. harveyi infection both in the laboratory and field. This technique is recommended as an applied protocol for health management programme and disease surveillance of in hatcheries as well as in grow-out pond, to prevent the disease outbreak.

Abstract
AIMS The main aims of this study were to clone and express flagellin flaA gene from Vibrio alginolyticus strain HY9901, also to prepare mouse anti-FlaA polyclonal antibody for future pathogen or vaccine study. METHODS AND RESULTS The full-length flaA gene was amplified by PCR with designed primers. The open reading frame of flaA gene contains 1131 bp, and its putative protein consists of 376 amino acid residues. Alignment analysis indicated that the FlaA protein was highly conserved. SDS-PAGE indicated that the FlaA protein was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Then, the recombinant FlaA protein was purified by affinity chromatography, and the mouse anti-FlaA serum was produced. The expression of flaA gene was verified by various immunological methods, including western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunogold electron microscopy (IEM). CONCLUSIONS Flagellin flaA gene was cloned and identified from V. alginolyticus HY9901, the recombinant FlaA protein was expressed and purified, and high-titre FlaA protein-specific antibody was produced. Western blot analysis revealed that the prepared antiserum not only specifically react to FlaA fusion protein, but also to natural FlaA protein of V. alginolyticus. The expressed FlaA protein was demonstrated, for the first time, as the component of flagella from V. alginolyticus by IEM. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study may offer important insights into the pathogenesis of V. alginolyticus, provide a base for further studies on the diagnosis and evaluation that whether the FlaA protein could be used as an effective vaccine candidate against infection by V. alginolyticus and other Vibrio species. Additionally, the purified FlaA protein and polyclonal antibody can be used for further functional and structural studies.

Abstract
We theoretically investigate resonant tunneling through S- and U-shaped nanostructured graphene nanoribbons. A rich structure of resonant tunneling peaks is found emanating from different quasi-bound states in the middle region. The tunneling current can be turned on and off by varying the Fermi energy. Tunability of resonant tunneling is realized by changing the width of the left and/or right leads and without the use of any external gates.

Abstract
The changes in the firing rate and firing pattern of pyramidal neurons in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the effects of selective 5-hydroxytryptamine-(1A) (5-HT(1A)) receptor agonist (R)-(+)-8-hydroxy-2-(dipropylamino)tetralin hydrobromide (8-OH-DPAT) and antagonist N-(2-(4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl)ethyl)-N-2-pyridylcyclohexane carboxamide maleate salt (WAY-100635) on the firing activity of the neurons were studied in sham-lesioned rats and rats with 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). The lesion of the SNc increased the firing rate of pyramidal neurons significantly compared to sham-lesioned rats, and the firing pattern of these neurons also changed significantly towards a more burst-firing. The systemic administration of 8-OH-DPAT at doses in the range of 0.5-128 microg/kg showed an excitatory-inhibitory effect on the firing rate of pyramidal neurons in mPFC of sham-lesioned rats. At lower doses, 0.5-32 microg/kg, it evoked excitation of the neurons, and at a high dose, i.e. 128 microg/kg, inhibited the activity of the neurons. In contrast to sham-lesioned rats, 8-OH-DPAT, at the same doses, showed no excitatory effect in the lesioned rats although the inhibitory phase of the effect of 8-OH-DPAT on the firing rate of pyramidal neurons in mPFC was still present. Furthermore, the local application of 8-OH-DPAT, 5 microg, in mPFC inhibited the firing rate of pyramidal neurons in sham-lesioned rats, while having no effect on firing rate in the lesioned rats. The excitatory or inhibitory effects of 8-OH-DPAT were reversed by WAY-100635, indicating that these effects are mediated by 5-HT(1A) receptor. Altogether, these results indicate that the lesion of the SNc leads to hyperactivity of pyramidal neurons in mPFC and the abnormality of response of these neurons to 5-HT(1A) receptor stimulation, suggesting that mPFC may be involved in the pathophysiology of the psychiatric disturbance of Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of the 1704 G/T and G82S polymorphisms in the RAGE gene with diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS The 1704G/T and G82S polymorphisms were genotyped in 340 Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) without DR subjects (DR- group); 166 T2DM with DR subjects (DR+ group), and 182 normal glucose tolerant subjects (NGT group). The genotypes were detected by the methods of ligase detection reaction coupled PCR. RESULTS There was no evident difference in the 1704G/T and G82S genotypic and allelic frequencies distribution between NGT and T2DM subjects. However, the frequences of G/A+AA genotypes (60.6%) and A allele (36.4%) of G82S were significantly higher in DR+ group than those (38.4%; 20.9%, respectively) in DR- group (p=0.01and p=0.007, respectively). Furthermore, haplotype analysis revealed that the frequency of G-A haplotype containing 1704G and 82S allele in DR+ group was significantly higher than that in DR- group (33.5% vs 19.6%, p=0.01). The multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that the G82S polymorphism [odds ratio (OR): 2.964, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.013-5.46, p=0.029] and diabetes duration (OR: 1.013, 95% CI: 1.007-1.02, p<0.001) were independent risk factors for DR. CONCLUSIONS G82S polymorphism in the RAGE gene is associated with DR and G-A haplotype containing 1704G and 82S allele might be a genetic marker of DR in Chinese T2DM patients.

Abstract
Several studies have shown that the 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin, 5-HT) system is severely affected after degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. In the present study, we examined the changes in the firing rate and firing pattern of the dorsal and median raphe nuclei (DRN and MRN) 5-HT neurons, and the effect of the selective 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist (R)-(+)-8-hydroxy-2-(dipropylamino)tetralin hydrobromide (8-OH-DPAT) and antagonist (N-(2-(4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl)ethyl)-N-2-pyridylcyclohexane carboxamide maleate salt (WAY-100635) on the neuronal firing in rats with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the substantia nigra pars compacta by using extracellular recording. The unilateral lesion of the nigrostriatal pathway significantly increased the mean firing rate of DRN and MRN 5-HT neurons compared with normal rats, and the firing pattern of these neurons also changed significantly towards a more bursty one. The lower dose of 8-OH-DPAT, 4 microg/kg (cumulative doses, i.v.), completely inhibited the firing activity of all DRN and MRN 5-HT neurons examined in normal and sham rats. In contrast to normal and sham rats, only the higher doses of 8-OH-DPAT, 128 and 64 microg/kg, completely inhibited the firing rate of DRN and MRN 5-HT neurons in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats, respectively. Furthermore, the local application of 8-OH-DPAT, 1.5 microg, in the DRN completely inhibited the firing rate of 5-HT neurons in normal and sham rats, while having no effect on firing rate in the lesioned rats. Altogether, these results indicate that lesion of the nigrostriatal pathway leads to hyperactivity of DRN and MRN 5-HT neurons, suggesting the implication of the DRN and MRN in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease, and the decreased response of these 5-HT neurons to 5-HT(1A) receptor stimulation, reflecting 5-HT(1A) receptor dysfunction in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats.

Abstract
Few previous studies have reported on the overall health of drug-using women. To investigate this, 696 low-income women aged 18-31 were recruited in a cross-sectional study from gynecological care clinics in Texas between 2001 and 2003. Compared to exclusive marijuana users and non-drug users, women who used MDMA and those who used other illicit drugs but not MDMA reported more gynecological conditions, medical conditions, depressive symptoms, and physical somatic complaints. We concluded that young, low-income women who used more than one illicit drug experience significantly more physical and psychological morbidity. Generalization of this study results may be limited to young women with low income but not to other populations.

Abstract
A case of normal gestation after 5 years on HPN is reported. The patient had her entire jejunum and ileum and right colon resected because of gangrene and has subsisted normally on HPN ever since. From the second trimester on, her HPN formula was supplemented to meet the requirement for growth and development of the foetus. Anaemia, hypoalbuminaemia, low plasma zinc levels and jaundice became manifest in the final trimester. These responded readily to readjustment of her HPN formula. A normal baby weighing 2020 g was delivered by Caesarean section at 36 weeks. Long-term HPN, final trimester abnormalities and HPN formula adjustments are discussed.

Abstract
A 750-bp internal fragment of the alkaline serine protease gene (asp) from the Vibrio alginolyticus strain HY9901 was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The flanking sequences of the 5'- and 3'- ends of the asp gene were characterized by reverse and nested PCR. Sequence analysis showed that the asp gene contained an 1893-bp ORF encoding 630 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of the ASP (alkaline serine protease) precursor showed significant homology with several bacterial alkaline serine proteases. Expression of the asp gene in Escherichia coli and activity tests of the ASP indicated that the N-signal peptide of the ASP precursor was essential to autocatalyse and fold correctly the enzyme to obtain activity. The purified ASP was lethal for Lutjanus erythopterus with an LD(50) of 0.25 microg protein g(-1) body weight.

Abstract
AIMS The main aims of this study were to clone and express complete open reading frame (ORF) of thermostable direct haemolysin gene (tdh) from Vibrio alginolyticus strain HY9901 in Escherichia coli, and further evaluate the virulence of expressed TDH on mouse and crimson snapper. METHODS AND RESULTS A 410 bp internal fragment of the tdh gene was amplified by touchdown PCR with designed primers. Then its unknown flanking sequences of the 5'- and 3'-ends were finally characterized by inverse PCR and nested PCR. Sequence analysis showed that the tdh gene contain 570 bp ORF which encoded 189 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of the ORF was in significant homology with several Vibrio TDH. The product that the tdh gene expressed in E. coli was purified by Ni(2+)-IDA Sepharose affinity column. The activity of purified TDH was 4651 U mg(-1) protein by hide powder azure digestion. The lethal toxicity test showed that LD(50) values of the purified TDH were 5.68 and 8.34 microg TDH g(-1) body weight for mouse and crimson snapper, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The complete ORF of tdh gene was obtained by touchdown PCR, inverse PCR and nested PCR. The ORF was perfectly expressed in E. coli. The activity and toxicity assays showed that the N-terminal signal peptide was essential to autocatalyse and fold correctly to obtain the activity and toxicity in the purified TDH. The Native-PAGE analysis showed that the activated tdh gene expressed in E. coli was a dimer with two identical subunits. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study demonstrates that the expressed activated TDH can produce the toxicity protein determined on mouse and fish, which will lead to better understandings of the identifying virulence factor that could be considered as a candidate antigen for vaccine and a diagnostic tool for vibriosis. Its use as an immunizing antigen might prevent the ability of V. alginolyticus to infect the marine aquatic animals, as a complementary measure to tick control and appropriate management in countries affected by vibriosis.

Abstract
A nano hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer was coated on a roughen titanium surface by means of electrophoretic deposition with an acetic anhydride solvent system. The objectives of this current study are to investigate whether nano-HAp can improve mechanical strength at a lower sintering temperature and biocompatibility. Densification temperature was lowered from usual 1000 to 800 degrees C. The coating interfacial bonding strength, phase purity, microstructure, and biocompatibility were investigated. Degradation of HA phase was not detected in XRD. A porous TiO2 layer acts as a gradient coating layer with an intermediate thermal expansion coefficient between hydroxyapatite and titanium that reduces the thermal stress. From SEM image, the coating does not contain any crack. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) is the progenitor cell for various tissues in mature animals, which can improve integration of bone tissue into implant. In this in vitro study, rabbit MSCs culture indicated that the HAp/Ti nanocomposite biomaterial had good biocompatibility and bioactivity. Around materials and on its surface cell grew well with good morphology. Proliferation of the MSCs on the nano-HAp coating was higher than its micron counterpart in XTT assay. These properties show potential for the orthopaedic and dental applications.

Abstract
The poor mechanical property of hydroxyapatite was the major problem for load bearing and implant coating in clinical applications. To overcome this weakness, a bioactive gradient coating with a special design composition of hydroxyapatite (HA), ZrO2, Ti, bioglass was developed. This 120 microm coating with an upper layer of 30-50 microm porous HA produced by computer controlled plasma spraying which maintained energy level of the plasma which ensure proper melting of powder. The crystal size of the coating was 18.6-26.2 nm. Transformation of t-ZrO2 to m-ZrO2 reduced the thermal stress that weakened the coating and lowered down interfacial strength of the coating and metal substrate. Thermal stress of sprayed coating was 16.4 MPa which was much smaller than the sample without thermal treatment of 67.1 MPa. Interfacial strength between the coating and metal substrate was 53 MPa which is much higher than conventional Hydroxyapatite coating. Based on XRD analysis crystallinity of HA approached 98%. Therefore, high temperature treatment improved long term stability of the coating through improved crystallinity of hydroxyapatite and reduced other impure calcium phosphate phase.

Abstract
22 patients with non-enhancing supratentorial gliomas on contrast-enhanced MRI underwent both diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MRI (DWI/PWI) before surgical resection. 14 low-grade gliomas (WHO Grade I and II) and 8 anaplastic gliomas were verified histologically. Both apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) ratios were calculated on the solid portion of the tumour, on peritumoural area, as well as on the contralateral normal white matter, respectively. The results showed that lower ADC values were present in the solid portions of anaplastic gliomas, but not in low grade (p < 0.01). All ADC values in peritumoural regions of tumours were decreased compared with the contralateral normal white matter. However, there was no significant difference between anaplastic gliomas and low-grade gliomas. Meanwhile, higher rCBV ratios were present in both solid portions and peritumoural regions of anaplastic gliomas, but not in low grade gliomas (p < 0.01). In conclusion, non-enhancing brain gliomas with lower ADC values in the solid portions and higher rCBV ratios in both solid portions and peritumoural regions of tumours are significantly correlated with anaplasia. Therefore, DWI and PWI should be integrated in the diagnostic work-up of non-enhancing gliomas in order to predict grading.

Abstract
The agricultural non-point source pollution by nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss from typical paddy soil (whitish soil, Bai Tu in Chinese) in the Taihu Lake region was investigated through a case study. Results shown that the net load of nutrients from white soil is 34.1 kg ha(-1) for total nitrogen (TN), distributed as 19.4 kg ha(-1), in the rice season and 14.7 kg ha(-1) in the wheat season, and for total phosphorus (TP) 1.75 kg ha(-1), distributed as 1.16 kg ha(-1) in the rice season and 0.58 kg ha(-1) in the wheat season. The major chemical species of N loss is different in the two seasons. NH4-N is main the form in the rice season (53% of TN). NO3-N is the main form in wheat season (46% of TN). Particle-P is the main form in both seasons, (about 56% of TP). The nutrient loss varied with time of the year. The main loss of nutrients happened in the 10 days after planting, 64% of TN and 42% of TP loss, respectively. Rainfall and fertilizer application are the key factors which influence nitrogen and phosphorus loss from arable land, especially rainfall events shortly after fertilizer application. So it is very important to improve the field management of the nutrients and water during the early days of planting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Published information about cancer screening in older Mexican-American women is scarce. This study reported the patterns of mammogram and Pap test use among older Mexican-American women. The patterns and associated factors were examined and compared with Healthy People 2000 targets. METHODS Data were obtained from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly, the largest representative survey of community-dwelling Mexican Americans aged 67 years or over, from the southwestern United States. RESULTS Among older Mexican-American women, 68.3% reported ever having a mammogram, and 41.2% reported having a mammogram in the last two years; 64.0% reported ever having a Pap test, with 43.6% reported having a Pap test in the last three years. CONCLUSIONS The data for older Mexican-American women demonstrated that they approached the targets for breast cancer screening, but not for Pap test use.

Abstract
A comparative study was conducted on cytochemistry of spring and fall crop seeds in peanut cultivars Quanhua No. 10 and Shanyou 71 respectively. Lipids, protein, and polysaccharides in cells of axis and coteledon were simultaneously shown in the Epon812 buried section by means of cytochemistry, and their morphology, quantity and distribution were compared. Embryo cells of spring crop seed develop fully with big cell more vivid contrasting texture and more regularly disposed organelle, but the counterpart cells in fall crop seeds were not as much mature and their organelle arrangement appeared somewhat irregular. In cotyledon storage cells, there were also some difference between spring crop seed and fall crop seed. Cells of spring crop seeds were full of reserves, with more lipid and protein bodies that were closely ranged and extruded with each other. However, the cell structure in fall crop seeds was more loosely arranged, vacuoles had not been filled with protein, but starch grains accumulated more. Therefore, it was shown clearly that spring crop seeds have some advantages over fall crop seeds on production application. Moreover, some cytochemical techniques for demonstration of lipid, polysaccharide and protein in thick resin section and the stain protection were discussed in the paper.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Axillary osmidrosis can be treated with many methods, but local surgery is the treatment of choice. METHODS Forty-three patients (32 females and 11 males, average age 20.3 years) were treated by partial removal of the skin and subcutaneous tissue en bloc and follicular clipping of the adjacent area. All operations were performed with local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. RESULTS Follow-up ranged from 2 to 47 months (mean: 13.4 months). Forty-one patients (95%) had good results, two (5%) were fair, and none were poor. No recurrences were seen. The wound complication rate was 3.5% for axillae and 7% for patients. There were no scar contractures or limitations of arm abduction. CONCLUSION This combined surgical method can eliminate malodor and has a low wound complication and recurrence rate. Though the transient and conspicuous scar is the chief drawback of this method, it is a simple, safe, effective and inexpensive method for treating axillary osmidrosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to identify patterns of mammogram and Papanicolaou (Pap) screenings among Mexican American women ages 67 and over. METHODS Data on 1,403 Mexican American women from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly, a cohort study of community-dwelling Mexican Americans ages 65 years or over from the southwestern United States, were analyzed. RESULTS Mexican American women age 75 or older were less likely to ever have had breast or cervical screening than women ages 67 to 74, even controlling for sociodemographic, cultural, and selected health factors. Overall, fewer medical conditions and never having had a hysterectomy were found to be associated with a decreased chance of ever having had a mammogram or a Pap test. Women who lacked insurance coverage and had fewer doctor visits were less likely to ever have had a mammogram, whereas women with low education, low acculturation, and lower cognitive status scores were less likely to ever have had a Pap test. CONCLUSIONS If these results withstand more detailed studies (e.g., with the addition of important variables such as awareness), better communication with health professional doctors and improvement of access to heath care services should increase rates of both mammogram and Pap screenings.

Abstract
The dysfunction of rat pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (RPMVEC) induced by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) was investigated in cell culture. The TNFalpha concentrations added into culture were 1000-5000 u/ml. The study was done at different steps as follows: (1) cell proliferation dynamic, (2) coagulation and anti-coagulation, (3) adhesive molecule, (4) nitric oxide (NO), (5) oncogens, and (6) apoptosis. It was concluded that attention should be paid to the metabolic disorder and dysfunction of RPMVEC induced by TNFalpha which can not be found easily according to the morphological changes. This might be the common pathway in the pathogenesis of some diseases related to TNFalpha.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of a new sustained release formulation (200mg) of acyclovir (ACV) in comparison with a 100mg reference was investigated. The studies were conducted in two-way crossover design, as single and multiple oral administration in twelve healthy volunteers. Serum samples were assayed for ACV using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with UV detection. The bioavailability of sustained release tablets relative to conventional tablets following single and multiple dosing was 105.9 +/- 12.0% and 95.2 +/- 8.4%, respectively. ANOVA and the two-sided t-test procedures showed significant difference in Cmax and tmax but no difference was found in AUC both in single and multiple dose studies. The results of this study indicated that the new sustained release tablets and the reference are bioequivalent.
