Structural Variations of Nose and Paranasal Sinuses in Various Sinonasal Pathologies: Tomographic Study of 50 Cases in Bangladeshi People

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of structural variations in nose & paranasal sinuses in computed tomography in Bangladeshi people. This retrospective study was done at the Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital and Apollo Hospitals, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Fifty (50) CT scan of Nose and Para nasal sinuses were collected from the patients presented with different sinonasal pathologies in OPD, IPD of both hospitals from July 2013 to June 2014. The scans were reviewed for the presence of different structural variations of nose and paranasal sinuses. The age range of the patients was 25 to 65 years. The most common anatomical variation in this study was hypertrophied inferior turbinate (82%) followed by ethmoidal bulla (70%), deviated nasal septum (64%), agar nasi cell (40%), concha bullosa (38%). In most of the patients we found more than one variation. There is wide range of anatomical variations in nose and paranasal sinuses which might be regarded as the aetiological factors of different sinonasal pathologies. To maximize patients' benefit and to avoid unexpected situations during surgeries as well as dreadful complications, individualized pre-planning through tomographic study should be considered.

Understanding the Collective Nose of Bacteria

Bacteria use a rich chemical vocabulary to "smell out" environmental conditions and communicate with each other about what is going on. This helps them optimize their virulence and attack differently, depending on whether they are, for example, in the lungs or the gut. [Clinal analysis of 202 nasal bone fractures cases]

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the age, sex, etiology, diagnosis and treatment time of nasal bone fractures.

METHOD

Clinical data of 202 cases with nasal bone fractures treated in the hospital were retrospectively analysed.

RESULT

A total of 202 cases,163 men (80. 7%) and 39 women (19. 3%). Fifty-two patients had a relationship with alcohol consumption, and all of them were males. The most frequent reasons of the injury were fight 46. 5% (94 cases) followed by falling-down 21. 3% (43 cases), traffic accidents 19. 3% (39 cases), works related 6. 5% (13 cases), sport injuries 5. 9% (12 cases) and others 0. 5% (1 cases). Patients distribution in seasons were: spring 54 cases (26.7%), summer 42 cases (20.8%), autumn 58 cases (28.7%), winter 48 cases (23. 8%). Diagnosis of nasal bone fractures were made positively by x-ray films in 79. 7% of cases, but 100% by CT. Positive predictive value of CT was superior to that of X-ray films in the diagnosis of nasal bone fracture.

CONCLUSION

High morbidity of nasal bone fracture was seen in the age group of 20-29 years, and predominantly in male. Fight was found to be the main etiologic factor. We think that CT is necessary for diagnosing nasal bone fracture.

[Hard palate fistula and nasal septum perforation after leukemia infection: report of one case]

Most of palatal fistula occur from poor repairation of cleft palate, leaving an abnormal channel between mouth and nose. Palatal fistula can cause a series of complications, such as voice and hearing disorder, poor oral and nasal hygiene, psychological diseases and so on. However, hard palate fistula secondary to Leukemia infection is rarely seen, it hasn't been reported yet. We report one case with hard palate fistula and nasal septum perforation after Leukemia infection.

[The correlations of chronic rhinonasal diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease]

Chronic rhinonasal diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cause impairment to the quality of life, increase the hospitalization and mortality. But we know little about the relationship between chronic rhinonasal disease (such as rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps and so on) and COPD. This review aimed to reveal the correlation of rhinonasal disease and COPD, as in epidemiology, mechanism, clinical presents, treatment and so on.

[Familial nasal bottom supernumerary tooth dentigerous cyst: report of 1 case and review of literatures]

Nasal supernumerary teeth and additional dental cyst is a common disease in Department of ENT and Department of Stomatology. In reported diseases, patients with a variety of additional teeth appeared in differ ent parts have varied clinical manifestations. Because of no obvious early symptoms, it is more difficult to diagnose, but CT examination in corresponding site can make it easy to diagnose the maxillary sinus and dentigerous cyst diagnosis. Operation is an effective method to cure the disease. Operation is simple, but the defect and tooth cavity after operation is one unavoidable problem for ENT doctor. In relevant literature it can be seen that the disease has a genetic tendency.

[A case of nasal keratoacanthoma (a case report and literatures review)]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the clinical characteristics and therapy methods of Keratoacanthoma.

METHOD

We reported a 39 years old man with nasal keratoacanthoma, and reviewed the literatures.

RESULT

The nasal neoplasms was expected, and the patient had a rhinoplasty. No recurrence happened in the half of one year follow up.

CONCLUSION

Keratoacanthoma is a kind of low malignant potential cutaneous neoplasms which grow rapidly with special clinical and histopathologic characteristics and is similar to squamous carcinoma cell.

Rhinology resources on the internet: an update

AIM

There has been a significant increase in the number of clinically useful biomedical resources available through the Internet over the last few years. The aim of this article is to present an updated list of all the worldwide web sites of rhinology.

METHODS

All rhinologic links, which appear on the web site of the journal "Rhinology" were accessed and updated. Non-responding links were discarded and a new extensive survey of all rhinologic sites on the Internet was performed using on-line available search engines. All sites were accessed more than once at different times and their uniform resource locator (URL) address was recorded.

RESULTS

The URL addresses of all rhinologic sites on the Internet appear in categories. Main categories include endoscopy and operative techniques, allergy, olfaction, rhinology clinics and research centers, organizations and societies, scientific journals, discussion groups, news and medical conferences, collective otolaryngology resources, and miscellaneous other sites of interest to rhinologists.

CONCLUSIONS

This paper summarizes several types of resources available to rhinologists on the Internet. A complete universal list was composed, in which links to almost all interesting rhinologic links were included.
