Development of acute pulmonary edema and death in dogs with aortic insufficiency following renal artery constriction

A standardized type of experimental aortic insufficiency was produced in dogs by partial removal of the aortic ‘noncoronary’ valve. A transventricular approach was used to perform the valvulectomies. All dogs with this type of aortic insufficiency, when subjected to renal artery constriction died in 2 days on the average with acute massive pulmonary edema and congestion.

Prophylaxis against acute pulmonary edema and death in dogs with aortic insufficiency following renal artery constriction by prior constriction of an atrial septal defect. Dogs with the combined cardiac lesions of atrial septal defect and aortic insufficiency were studied. The atrial septal defects were large and were produced under direct vision. The present studies indicate that when such dogs are subjected to renal artery constriction (RAC) they neither die acutely (within 2 days) nor develop acute massive pulmonary edema. These dogs develop varying patterns of ‘congestive failure’ after RAC. The severity and course of this ‘congestive failure’ seemed to depend upon either the size of the aortic valvular ‘leak’ or the degree of RAC produced in a particular dog.

Production of endocarditis with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mitis in dogs with aortic insufficiency

Following the induction of aortic insufficiency, 15 dogs received intravenous injections of either Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus mitis . The clinical course and pathologic picture resembled those of acute and subacute bacterial endocarditis respectively. The valvular lesions were confined largely to contacting surfaces of aortic and mitral leaflets. The dogs given S. mitis often developed an acute diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis. No such valvular or renal lesions were noted in 10 control dogs, including 2 with sham operations, given similar bacterial injections.
