Abstract
We report studies of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, where D(CP) denotes CP eigenstates of the D0-D0; system. The analysis is based on a 29.1 fb(-1) sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure ratios of branching fractions, relative to Cabibbo-favored B+/--->D(CP)pi(+/-), of B(B--->D1K-)/B(B--->D1pi(-))=0.125+/-0.036+/-0.010 and B(B--->D2K-)/B(B--->D2pi(-))=0.119+/-0.028+/-0.006; the index 1 (2) denotes the CP=+1 (-1) eigenstate. We also extract the partial rate asymmetries for B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, finding A(1)=0.29+/-0.26+/-0.05 and A(2)=-0.22+/-0.24+/-0.04.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effects of a probiotic formulation, VSL#3, on gastrointestinal transit and symptoms of patients with Rome II irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhoea. METHODS Twenty-five patients with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome were randomly assigned to receive VSL#3 powder (450 billion lyophilized bacteria/day) or matching placebo twice daily for 8 weeks after a 2-week run-in period. Pre- and post-treatment gastrointestinal transit measurements were performed in all patients. Patients recorded their bowel function and symptoms daily in a diary during the 10-week study, which was powered to detect a 50% change in the primary colonic transit end-point. RESULTS There were no significant differences in mean gastrointestinal transit measurements, bowel function scores or satisfactory global symptom relief between the two treatment groups, pre- or post-therapy. Differences in abdominal bloating scores between treatments were borderline significant (P = 0.09, analysis of covariance). Further analysis revealed that abdominal bloating was reduced (P = 0.046) with VSL#3 [mean post- minus pre-treatment score, - 13.7; 95% confidence interval (CI), - 2.5 to - 24.9], but not with placebo (P = 0.54) (mean post- minus pre-treatment score, - 1.7; 95% CI, 7.1 to - 10.4). With the exception of changes in abdominal bloating, VSL#3 had no effect on other individual symptoms: abdominal pain, gas and urgency. All patients tolerated VSL#3 well. CONCLUSION VSL#3 appears to be promising in the relief of abdominal bloating in patients with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. This is unrelated to an alteration in gastrointestinal or colonic transit.

Abstract
We report the measurement of the charmed baryonic decay B(0)-->Lambda(+)(c)p with a branching fraction of (2.19(+0.56)(-0.49)+/-0.32+/-0.57)x10(-5) and a statistical significance of 5.8 sigma. The errors are statistical, systematic, and the error of the Lambda(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+) decay branching fraction. This is the first observation of a two-body baryonic B decay. The analysis is based on 78.2 fb(-1) of data accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGFR) have been implicated in promoting solid tumor growth and metastasis via stimulating tumor-associated angiogenesis. We recently showed that certain 'liquid' tumors such as leukemia not only produce VEGF, but also express functional VEGFR, resulting in an autocrine loop for tumor growth and propagation. A chimeric anti-VEGFR2 (or kinase insert domain-containing receptor, KDR) antibody, IMC-1C11, was shown to be able to inhibit VEGF-induced proliferation of human leukemia cells in vitro, and to prolong survival of nonobese diabetic-severe combined immune deficient (NOD-SCID) mice inoculated with human leukemia cells. Here we produced two fully human anti-KDR antibodies (IgG1), IMC-2C6 and IMC-1121, from Fab fragments originally isolated from a large antibody phage display library. These antibodies bind specifically to KDR with high affinities: 50 and 200 pM for IMC-1121 and IMC-2C6, respectively, as compared to 270 pM for IMC-1C11. Like IMC-1C11, both human antibodies block VEGF/KDR interaction with an IC(50) of approximately 1 nM, but IMC-1121 is a more potent inhibitor to VEGF-stimulated proliferation of human endothelial cells. These anti-KDR antibodies strongly inhibited VEGF-induced migration of human leukemia cells in vitro, and when administered in vivo, significantly prolonged survival of NOD-SCID mice inoculated with human leukemia cells. It is noteworthy that the mice treated with antibody of the highest affinity, IMC-1121, survived the longest period of time, followed by mice treated with IMC-2C6 and IMC-1C11. Taken together, our data suggest that anti-KDR antibodies may have broad applications in the treatment of both solid tumors and leukemia. It further underscores the efforts to identify antibodies of high affinity for enhanced antiangiogenic and antitumor activities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To support tobacco control policies in Korea by providing the estimated annual economic burden attributed to cigarette smoking. METHODS The following two different approaches were used to estimate the cost: "disease specific" and "all causes". In the disease specific approach, we focused on estimating direct and indirect costs involved in treatments of cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal diseases, and cancer as a result of smoking, by using an epidemiologic approach-the population attributable risk (PAR). To compute PAR, the relative risks of smoking in terms of physician visits, hospital admission, and death were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model. In the all causes approach, we examined the differences in direct and indirect costs between smokers and non-smokers for all conditions and types of disease. The major data source was the Korea Medical Insurance Corporation cohort study, which had complete records of smoking status as of 1992 for 115 682 male and 67 932 female insured workers. RESULTS By the disease specific approach, the estimated costs attributable to smoking in 1998 in Korea ranged from US 2269.42 million dollars (4.89 million dollars per 100,000 population; 0.59% of gross domestic product (GDP)) to 2956.75 million dollars (6.37 million dollars; 0.78% of GDP). The all causes approach yielded a minimum cost of 3154.75 million dollars (6.79 million dollars; 0.82% GDP) and a maximum of 4580.25 million dollars (9.86 million dollars; 1.19% GDP). CONCLUSION The study confirms that smoking places a substantial economic burden on Korean society. In light of this, our study provides evidence for a strong need to develop a national policy to effectively control tobacco consumption in Korea.

Abstract
We report measurements of branching fractions for charged and neutral B-->eta(c)K decays where the eta(c) meson is reconstructed in the K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+), K+K-pi(0), K(*0)K-pi(+), and pp; decay channels. The neutral B0 channel is a CP eigenstate and can be used to measure the CP violation parameter sin(2phi(1). We also report the first observation of the B0-->eta(c)K(*0) mode. The results are based on an analysis of 29.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the branching fraction for the inclusive decay B-->X(s)l(+)l(-), where l is either an electron or a muon, and X(s) is a hadronic recoil system that contains an s quark. We analyzed a data sample of 65.4 x 10(6) B meson pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We find B(B-->X(s)l(+)l(-))=[6.1 +/-1.4(stat) +1.4-1.1(syst)] x 10(-6) for dilepton masses greater than 0.2 GeV/c(2).

Abstract
Graft rejection in patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is strongly associated with a large number of prior transfusions and with prolonged disease duration before transplant. We retrospectively analyzed the outcomes and the factor affecting these multitransfused SAA patients, who had received triple agent immunosuppression and high doses of stem cells to overcome rejection. In total, 113 patients with SAA who had a median 16 months (range 1-216) of disease duration were transplanted using HLA-matched sibling donors after conditioning with cyclophosphamide (CY), procarbazine (PCB), and ATG. Graft failure occurred in 16 of the eligible 113 patients, and with a median follow-up of 30 months (range, 1-80), probability of overall rejection was 15%. Specifically, the multitransfused patients who received high doses of stem cells with T-cell depletion showed the lowest rejection rate, 5.6%, compared with 30.3% in multitransfused patients with bone marrow stem cells alone (P=0.0310). Disease duration (P=0.0338) and the number of infused CD34+cells (P=0.0101) were associated with a high risk of graft rejection on multivariate analysis. ABO mismatch and the number of CD34+ cells were significant factors in the incidence of acute graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). The incidence of chronic GVHD among patients with sustained engraftment was 13/109 (11.9%). With the same follow-up period, probability of disease-free survival for the entire group of patients at 6 years was 89% and the only factor associated with long-term survival was rejection (P=0.0241). These results suggest that allogeneic HSCT conditioned with triple agent immunosuppression, and specifically with high-dose stem cell return is probably an effective treatment for successful engraftment in SAA patients with a high risk of rejection.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate whether the functional polymorphisms in the promoter of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and in the regulatory region of the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) gene are associated with susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its clinical features. The MMP-1 1G/2G polymorphism and the MCP-1 promoter A/G polymorphism were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 117 RA patients and 97 healthy controls. The genotype distribution of the MMP-1 promoter did not differ between RA patients and control subjects. However, in the 2G/2G genotype, ESR and Plat were higher than the 1G/1G genotype. The genotype distribution of the MCP-1 promoter did not differ between the RA and control groups. Clinically there was no significant difference among RA patients according to the MCP-1 promoter genotypes. Our data show that the functional promoter polymorphism in the MMP-1 promoter may not play an important role in the susceptibility of RA, but the polymorphism may be related to clinical phenotypes.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the B0-Bmacr;(0) mixing parameter Deltam(d) using neutral B meson pairs in a 29.1 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We exclusively reconstruct one neutral B meson in the semileptonic B0-->D(*-)l(+)nu decay mode and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the distribution of the time intervals between the two flavor-tagged B meson decay points, we obtain Deltam(d)=(0.494+/-0.012+/-0.015) ps(-1), where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic.

Abstract
We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)-->D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)-->D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.

Abstract
We report observations of radiative B meson decays into the K+pi(-)gamma and K+pi(-)pi(+)gamma final states. In the B0-->K+pi(-)gamma channel, we present evidence for decays via an intermediate tensor meson state with a branching fraction of B(B0-->K(*)(2)(1430)(0)gamma)=[1.3+/-0.5(stat)+/-0.1(syst)]x10(-5). We measure the branching fraction B(B+-->K+pi(-)pi(+)gamma)=[2.4+/-0.5(stat) +0.4-0.2(syst)]x10(-5), in which the B+-->K(*0)pi(+)gamma and B+-->K+rho(0)gamma channels dominate. The analysis is based on a data set of 29.4 fb(-1) recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Prospective investigation using serial urodynamic studies. OBJECTIVE To evaluate type of neurogenic bladder and to observe changes of autonomous detrusor contraction (ADC) after the normalization of the compliance and capacity of the bladder in cauda equina injury. SETTING Spinal Cord Injury Unit, Yonsei Rehabilitation Hospital, Seoul, Korea. METHODS Urodynamic studies were performed in 50 patients with complete cauda equina injury from trauma with an infusion ratio of 30 ml/min. Findings of urodynamic studies and clinical features of patients with low compliance were compared with those of the normal compliant patients. Fourteen patients with low compliance received oral administration of oxybutynin and propiverine and intravesical instillation of oxybutynin to increase the compliance and capacity of the bladder, and follow-up urodynamic studies to monitor the change were undertaken. RESULTS Bladder compliance was decreased in 14 (28%) patients and normal in 36 (72%) patients. There was a significantly long time interval between the onset of injury and the initiation of rehabilitative treatment in the neurogenic bladder group with low compliance when compared to those of the normal compliance group (P < 0.05). Clean intermittent catheterization was used as the voiding method, significantly less than the normal compliance group (P < 0.05). ADC was observed in six out of fourteen patients with low compliance neurogenic bladder, but none in the normal compliance group. Upon the completion of conservative treatment, ADC disappeared in four patients whose compliance and capacity of the bladder were normalized on follow-up urodynamic studies. CONCLUSION ADC was only observed in the low compliant bladder and as ADC disappeared when compliance and capacity of the bladder was normalized; low compliance appeared to be the main cause of ADC. In addition, this study supports that the maintenance of compliance of the bladder may be the most important factor in the management of neurogenic bladder.

Abstract
Implantation of a penile prosthesis in men with complicated fibrosis of corpus cavernosum is very difficult and even impossible. Cavernosal dilation requires sharp intracavernosal dissection to implant prosthesis, however complete removal of the fibrotic tissue is often impossible. We introduce a new technique using electric resection and electrovaporization of fibrotic tissue for implantation of penile prosthesis in a patient with severe corporeal fibrosis.

Abstract
Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt [s(NN)]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone epsilon, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low p(T). A breakdown of this epsilon scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT >1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the charmless two-body mode B+/--->omegaK+/- decay, and a new measurement of the branching fraction for the B+/--->omegapi(+/-) decay. The measured branching fractions are B(B+/--->omegaK+/-)=(9.2(+2.6)(-2.3)+/-1.0)x10(-6) and B(B+/--->omegapi(+/-))=(4.2(+2.0)(-1.8)+/-0.5)x10(-6). We also measure the partial rate asymmetry of B+/--->omegaK+/- decays and obtain A(CP)=-0.21+/-0.28+/-0.03. The results are based on a data sample of 29.4 fb(-1) collected on the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract
AIMS/PURPOSE To identify the characteristic ocular findings in Asian children with Down syndrome. METHODS A total of 123 Korean children with Down's syndrome between 6 months and 14 years of age were examined for ocular findings from March 1999 to April 2000. Ocular examinations including visual acuity assessment, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, ocular motility, cycloplegic refraction, and ophthalmoscopy were performed. RESULTS The ocular findings in decreasing prevalence were the following: upward slanting of the palpebral fissure (78 patients, 63%), epicanthus (75 patients, 61%), epiblepharon (66 patients, 54%), astigmatism (38 patients, 31%), hyperopia (35 patients, 28%), myopia (31 patients, 25%), strabismus (31 patients, 25%, 18 esotropia and 13 exotropia), nystagmus (27 patients, 22%), nasolacrimal duct obstruction (21 patients, 17%), blepharoconjunctivitis (20 patients, 16%), retinal abnormalities (18 patients, 15%), cataract (four patients, 13%), and glaucoma (one patient, 0.8%). Brushfield spots and keratoconus were not found. CONCLUSIONS Asian children with Down syndrome demonstrate unreported, high incidence of epiblepharon, the high rate of exotropia, and essentially no notable Brushfield spots, which are in contrast to the ocular findings in Caucasian patients with Down syndrome.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Review and analysis of seven cases of syringomyelia treated surgically. OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the beneficial role of decompressive surgery for the altered cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics in syringomyelia not associated with Chiari I malformation. A comparison between the pre- and post-operative syrinx size and CSF flow in the subarachnoid space was made using cine-mode magnetic resonance imaging (cine-MRI) and then correlated with clinical improvement. SETTING University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. METHODS Conventional spinal MRI and cine-MRI were performed in the region of CSF flow obstruction preoperatively in seven patients with syringomyelia not associated with Chiari I malformation. The group consisted of one case of syrinx with post-traumatic compression fracture, one case of post-traumatic arachnoiditis, two cases of holocord syrinx associated with hydrocephalus without Chiari malformation, one case of syrinx with post-traumatic pseudomeningeal cyst, one case of post-laminectomy kyphosis-associated syringomyelia and one case of post-tuberculous arachnoiditis syringomyelia. Based on the preoperative cine-MRI, the types of surgery appropriate to correct the CSF flow obstruction were chosen: decompressive laminectomy-adhesiolysis and augmentation duraplasty in arachnoiditis cases, ventriculoperitoneal shunt for hydrocephalus, cyst extirpation in pseudomeningeal cyst and both anterior and posterior decompression-fusion in the case of post-laminectomy kyphosis. A syrinx-draining shunt operation was performed in three cases; where the syringomyelia was associated with post-traumatic compression fracture refractory to a previous decompression, where hydrocephalus was present in which the decompression by ventriculoperitoneal shunt was insufficient and where post-traumatic arachnoiditis was present in which the decompression was impossible due to diffuse adhesion. Change in syrinx size was evaluated with post-operative MRI in all seven cases and restoration of flow dynamics was evaluated with cine-MRI in three of the cases, two patients with clinical improvement and one patient with no change of clinical status, respectively. RESULTS Four out of seven patients showed symptomatic improvement after each decompressive operation. In the remaining three cases, reconstruction of the spinal subarachnoid space was not possible due to diffuse adhesion or was not the main problem as in the patient with syrinx associated with hydrocephalus who had to undergo a shunt operation. One of these three patients showed clinical improvement after undergoing syringosubarachnoid shunt. A decrease of syrinx size was observed in only two out of the five patients who showed clinical improvement after treatment. Of these five patients, two patients underwent post-operative cine-MRI and the restoration of normal CSF flow dynamics was noted in both patients. Of the remaining two patients, one underwent post-operative cine-MRI and there was no change in the CSF flow dynamics evident. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the restoration of CSF flow dynamics between the syrinx and the subarachnoid space by decompressive operation is more effective than simple drainage of the syrinx cavity itself in the treatment of syringomyelia without Chiari malformation.

Abstract
We report the observation of prompt J/psi via double cc; production from the e+e- continuum. In this process one cc; pair fragments into a J/psi meson while the remaining pair either produces a charmonium state or fragments into open charm. Both cases have been experimentally observed. We find cross sections of sigma[e+e- -->J/psieta(c)(gamma)]xB(eta(c)-->>or=4 charged)=(0.033(+0.007)(-0.006)+/-0.009) pb and sigma(e+e- -->J/psiD(*+)X)=(0.53(+0.19)(-0.15)+/-0.14) pb and infer sigma(e+e- -->J/psicc;)/sigma(e+e- -->J/psiX)=0.59(+0.15)(-0.13)+/-0.12. These results are obtained from a 46.2 fb(-1) data sample collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the decay B(0)-->D(+/-)D(*-/+) with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) Collider operated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The sum of branching fractions B(B(0)-->D(+)D(*-))+B(B(0)-->D(-)D(*+)) is measured to be (1.17+/-0.26(+0.22)(-0.25))x10(-3) using the full reconstruction method where both charmed mesons from B0 decays are reconstructed. A consistent value [(1.48+/-0.38(+0.28)(-0.31))x10(-3)] is obtained using a partial reconstruction technique that uses only the slow pion from the D(*-)-->D(-0)pi(-) decay and a fully reconstructed D(+) to reconstruct the B(0).

Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow peak in the K(S)K-pi(+) invariant mass distribution in a sample of exclusive B-->KK(S)K-pi(+) decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. The measured mass of the peak is M=3654+/-6(stat)+/-8(syst) MeV/c(2), and we place a 90% confidence level upper limit on the width of Gamma<55 MeV/c(2). The properties agree with heavy-quark potential model expectations for the eta(c)(2S) meson, the n=2 singlet S charmonium state.

Abstract
Five different kinds of PU foam wound dressings were prepared to investigate their wound healing capability. They include (i) PU+silver sulfadiazine (AgSD), (ii) PU+alginate (Al), (iii) PU+Al+AgSD, (i.v.) PU+hyaluronic acid (HA), and (v) PU+HA+AgSD. Physical properties and in vitro behaviors of AgSD release and fibroblast adhesion on those dressings were evaluated. From the drug release and fibroblast adhesion studies, it was observed that PU foam impregnated with both HA and AgSD shows good drug release behavior and low adhesion of the cells. Furthermore, the HA and AgSD-containing PU foam showed excellent wound healing effect without any inflammation or yellow cluster. The wound size decreased around 77% after 1 week application of that foam dressing onto a rat skin defect.
