Mutagenic activity of selenium compounds

The mutagenicities of selenate (SeO2/4-) and selenite (SeO2/3-) were determined by two bacterial assay systems: Kada's rec-assay and Ames's Salmonella test. In both assays, these compounds were found to be weak mutagens. In the Salmonella test, selenate (0.05 revertants/nmole) and selenite (0.2 revertants/nmole) gave rise to base-pair substitution.

18p-Mosaicism: case report and review

The case of a 5-month-old male infant with 18p- mosaic, who has intractable seizures and severe ophthalmological abnormalities in addition to many clinical manifestations usually described in the 18p- syndrome, is reported. The proportions of abnormal cells are 7-8% in blood and 55% in skin. About 35% of the short arm of chromosome 18 is deleted. to our knowledge the present report is the fifth one of 18p-mosaic. The main interest of this case resides in the fact that it shows a serious clinical picture despite the low proportion of abnormal cells in blood and the small degree of deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18.

Enzymic hydrolysis of diol lipids by pancreatic lipase

Chain length and positional specificities of pancreatic lipase for diol lipids have been examined by use of the synthetic substrates such as the diol esters and related esters that contain C6--C20 even-numbered saturated acids and oleic acid as fatty acids, and ethylene glycol, 1,2- and 1,3-propanediols, 1,3-, 1,4-, and 2,3-butanediols, monohydric alcohols, and glycerol as alcohols. No remarkable difference in the degree of hydrolysis was observed in the case of diol esters having C14--C20 fatty acids at least during 30-min digestion, though hydrolysis reached a maximum in diol diotanoates after the same period. Pancreatic lipase specifically released only the fatty acids esterified with the primary hydroxyl groups of diols.

Median rhomboid glossitis associated with amyloid deposition

There are some controversies over the pathogenesis and clinical features of median rhomboid glossitis. A case of median rhomboid glossitis associated with amyloid deposition was presented. Clinically there was no organ involved in amyloid other than the tongue. It was suspected that median rhomboid glossitis occurred first and that amyloid was induced later.
