Micro-iontophoretic studies on neurones in the cuneate nucleus

1. Cuneate cells in anaesthetized cats were strongly excited by L-glutamate, and somewhat less by D-glutamate; cells which receive afferents from hair receptors were particularly sensitive.2. Glutamate could be used to demonstrate post-synaptic inhibitory inputs from the dorsal column, the medial lemniscus and the frontal cortex.3. Many cuneate cells were also strongly excited by adenosinetriphosphate (ATP); this was probably due to the chelating action of ATP, as citric acid was also quite effective.4. gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) readily blocked all forms of spontaneous and evoked activity, except antidromic invasion of cuneothalamic neurones; cells which receive proprioceptive afferents were particularly sensitive to GABA. Glycine had a comparable effect.5. Acetylcholine (ACh), catecholamines, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and an extract containing substance P mostly had only weak depressant actions. Cholinergic and mono-aminergic mechanisms are probably not very significant in the cuneate.6. These results are consistent with the possibility that glutamate and GABA (or glycine), or some closely related compounds, are the main excitatory and inhibitory transmitters in the cuneate nucleus.7. If ATP is released from afferent nerve endings, it could also play a significant role in excitation.

Language development in two groups of socially disadvantaged young children

Two groups of socially disadvantaged young children were studied for a 2-yr. period. The experimental children (those with 2 yr. of enrichment) and controls (no enriched schooling) were tested at the beginning of the first grade and retested at the beginning of the second grade with the ITPA. Results indicate: (1) a significant performance difference between experimental and control Ss over the 2 yr, (2) all significant subtest differences over the 2 yr. favor the experimental group, with the differences primarily a function of control group decrement; (3) both groups show similar patterns of psycholinguistic performance. These findings support the hypothesis that early enrichment helps to offset language disability related to the socially disadvantaged condition.

Self-consistency, value strength and aesthetic judgments

An empirical test was made of the relation of self-consistency to strength of the aesthetic value in determining aesthetic judgments. 25 undergraduate Ss responded to 24 paintings. From each respondent was collected: (1) using a self-anchoring scale adaptation, a self-rating of personality characteristics subjectively deemed the significant attributes characterizing those who liked and disliked each painting as the self-concept index, (2) rating of the degree of liking each painting on a six-point scale as the aesthetic behavior studied and (3) score on the Aesthetic Value of the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values as the index of the strength or importance of the particular value involved. Tetrachoric correlations of the 24 sets of responses made by each individual in (1) and (2) were used as the indices of self-consistency. The mean rt = .50 ( p < .01). Rank difference correlations of these rts and the score on the Aesthetic Value from (3) indicated the importance of the value in determining the strength of the self-consistency ( rho = .39, p < 05), confirming the significance of this correlate of the self-consistency dynamic in aesthetic judgment.
