Dissociation of vesicular stomatitis virus and relation of the virion proteins to the viral transcriptase

A procedure has been developed for the sequential removal and purification of the glycoprotein and membrane protein of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Neither of these proteins exhibited transcriptase activity. All of the activity was recovered in the ribonucleic acid (RNA)-ribonucleoprotein complex of VSV, which also has four other minor proteins associated with it. During transcription of 41% of the RNA of a virus preparation, no dissociation of the ribonucleoprotein from the viral RNA was observed.

Genome homology of vesicular stomatitis virus and defective T particles and evidence for the sequential transcription of the virion ribonucleic acid

The small defective T particle of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV-111) has no detectable enzyme activity when assayed at 31 C, although qualitatively it possesses all the virion proteins found in complete VSV-1 virions. With VSV-1 transcription product ribonucleic acid (RNA), it is shown that the VSV-111 RNA is identical to part of the VSV-1 genome. Evidence is also presented to support the idea that in vitro VSV-1 transcription is sequential.

Cineangiography of the coronary arteries: clinical function and anatomic correlation in patients with chronic chest pain

Fifty French-Canadian patients presenting with typical or atypical anginal pain were studied by selective cinearteriography and coronary sinus catheterization, with measurement of myocardial function, oxygen and lactate extraction at rest and during isoproterenol infusion. In 28 of 42 patients all three coronary arteries were involved, but angina pectoris also occurred in patients with single mildly stenotic arterial lesions and even in eight patients with normal cinearteriograms. All patients with severe arterial lesions had typical angina, and the longer the duration of angina, the greater the extent, usually, of anatomic disease. Seventy-nine percent of resting electrocardiograms of patients with documented coronary artery disease were abnormal, with recognizable prior infarction in 18. Two-thirds of the patients experiencing pain during the stressful state had abnormal ventricular function. An abnormal arteriovenous lactate difference in response to isoproterenol occurred in patients in all groups.

Isolation and properties of poliovirus minus strand ribonucleic acid

Poliovirus minus strands were purified from double-stranded polio ribonucleic acid. The minus strands have a base ratio complementary to that of the viral ribonucleic acid and are not infectious.

Studies on the behaviour of Lucilia illustris Meigen as a parasite of vertebrates under experimental conditions

When egg-masses of Lucilia illustris, taken from carcasses, were mounted on the body of living vertebrates (Clarius batrachus, Bufo melanostictus, Rana tigrina, Hemidactylus fluviviridis, Columba livia and Suncus murinus), the larvae hatched in the majority of cases under normal conditions of room temperature, and entered into the body of the experimental hosts, ultimately killing them. It appeared that the larvae fed on the brain first before turning their attention to other soft tissues of the hosts. The specimens fed on living tissue had a shorter period of development than those bred on dead animals and the period of development was shortest when the host was a living warm-blooded animal.
