Prognosis of vertigo following cranio-cervical injury

The prognosis of vertigo associated with post-traumatic disorder of the head and neck was assessed during long-term observations of 75 patients, Subjective symptoms of vertigos improved 4 years after the first examination in almost all cases. The results of vestibular examination regarding objective symptoms of vertigo were usually fixed at about 2 years after the first examination. Changes in the subjective symptoms and the results of vestibular examinations provided pertinent information for clinical assessments. The EEG findings in these patients showed a close correlation to the improvement of subjective symptoms of vertigo and to alternation in the results of vestibular examination. Post-traumatic neurosis was almost always related to both the subjective symptoms which persisted.

Nystagmus and REM-density during sleep in patients with various brain lesions

The subjects of this study were 25 patients. Sixteen cases with nystagmus referable to brain stem lesion were divided into two groups; one group was 7 vertical nystagmus (vertical group) and the other group was 9 horizontal nystagmus (horizontal group). Other 9 cases consisted of congenital group (4 cases), cerebellar group (3 cases) and labyrinthine group (2 cases). Normal controls were 8 male volunteers who had no history of particular psychiatric and somatic illness. The results were as follows: 1) Nystagmus observed during wakefulness in all nystagmus groups disappeared during all stages of sleep. 2) The vertical component of nystagmus in the vertical group showed significantly enhanced REM-density compared with that of normal subjects. 3) Both horizontal and vertical REM-densities of the horizontal and labyrinthine group were almost as high as those of normal subjects. 4) Both REM-densities of the congenital group were significantly lower than those of normal subjects. 5) The horizontal REM-density of the cerebellar group was significantly higher than that of normal subjects.

Epidemiology of contact dermatitis from pesticides in Japan

An epidemiological study was made of 216 patients with contact dermatitis from pesticides in Japanese rural regions from 1968 to 1970. They were analyzed according to conditions of use, sex, age, occupation, exposure, and season. The pesticides most often responsible were captafol (Difolatan) (28.7%), sulfurs (18.5%), highly and moderately toxic organic phosphates (18.1%), and chlorinated hydrocarbons (9.7%). Complications, sites of dermatitis, prognosis and factors contributing to onset of dermatitis are discussed.

Interruption of the aortic arch with distal type of aorticopulmonary septal defect. A case report

An autopsy case of interruption of the aortic arch with distal type of aorticopulmonary septal defect which is located between the left posterolateral wall of the ascending aorta and the junctional portion between the right pulmonary artery and the pulmonary trunk was reported.

Mutational biosynthesis of butirosin analogs. III. 6'-N-methylbutirosins and 3', 4'-dideoxy-6'-c-methylbutirosins, new semisynthetic aminoglycosides

Two pairs of butirosin analogs were isolated from the fermentation broths obtained by cultivating a neamine-negative mutant of the butirosin-producing organism Bacillus circulans in the medium supplemented with 6'-N-methylneamine and gentamine C2, respectively. These amtibiotics were characterized as 6'-N-mentylbutirosins A and B (NMB-A & NMB-B), and 3', 4'-dideoxy-6'-C-methylbutirosins A and B (DCB-A & DCB-B), respectively, by chemical and spectroscopic studies. NMB-A and NMB-B exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activities with in vitro potency similar to or slightly less than that for butirosin A, but with greater activities against butirosin-resistant strain which contains acetylating enzyme AAC-(6')-I. The activities of NMB-A and NMB-B against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were relatively weak. DCB-B had broad-spectrum activity, and exhibited greatly improved activity against butirosin-resistant organisms which contain acetylating enzymes AAC(6')-I and AAC(6')-IV, and phosphorylating enzyme APH(3')-II. These new butirosin analogs were also active against some of the clinical isolates resistant to butirosins, dibekacin and/or gentamicin.

[Statistical observation of urolithiasis at the Hokkaido University Hospital (1959-1975) (author's transl)]

In recent 17 years from 1959 to 1975, 32296 patients were visited to the Urological department of Hokkaido university hospital. 1192 patients (male 818, female 374) were diagnosed as urolithiasis in this period. The incidence was 3.7%. Among them, 1324 urinary calculi were seen. In detail, renal stone 509 (38.4%), ureteral stone 717 (54.2%), bladder stone 84 (6.4%), urethral stone 14 (1.1%). The tendency of upper urinary stone-wave was increasing gradually. Especially after 1965, it was increasing sharply. The tendency of lower's was stable. There was 15 urolithiasis in childhood in this duration. Most of them were upper urinary stone. 9 patients were under 5 years of age. The cause of urolithiasis was found in 9.5%. The upper urinary stone was found only 4.7% but, 57% was found in lower urinary stone. In this report, statistical studies of this work was compared and discussed with already published data in 1961 of our department.

Macrolide antibiotics M-4365 produced by Micromonospora. III. In vitro antimicrobial activity of antibiotic M-4365G2 (de-epoxy rosamicin)

Antibiotic M-4365G2 (de-epoxy rosamicin) produced by Micromonospora capillata MCRL 0940 is a new basic 16-membered macrolide antibiotic with activity equal to or superior to erythromycin and josamycin against Gram-positive bacteria. Of interest are the high degree of activity against Gram-negative bacilli and mycoplasmas, and striking inhibitory effects against indole-producing Proteus spp. Bactericidal activity of M-4365G2 is also to be noticed.
