Abstract
We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and a genome-wide gene-environment interaction analysis of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC) in 2,031 affected individuals (cases) and 2,044 controls with independent validation in 8,092 cases and 8,620 controls. We identified nine new ESCC susceptibility loci, of which seven, at chromosomes 4q23, 16q12.1, 17q21, 22q12, 3q27, 17p13 and 18p11, had a significant marginal effect (P=1.78×10(-39) to P=2.49×10(-11)) and two of which, at 2q22 and 13q33, had a significant association only in the gene-alcohol drinking interaction (gene-environment interaction P (PG×E)=4.39×10(-11) and PG×E=4.80×10(-8), respectively). Variants at the 4q23 locus, which includes the ADH cluster, each had a significant interaction with alcohol drinking in their association with ESCC risk (PG×E=2.54×10(-7) to PG×E=3.23×10(-2)). We confirmed the known association of the ALDH2 locus on 12q24 to ESCC, and a joint analysis showed that drinkers with both of the ADH1B and ALDH2 risk alleles had a fourfold increased risk for ESCC compared to drinkers without these risk alleles. Our results underscore the direct genetic contribution to ESCC risk, as well as the genetic contribution to ESCC through interaction with alcohol consumption.

Abstract
Since the invention of 45S5 Bioglass, researchers never stopped exploring new generation bioactive glass (BG) materials for wider applications in regenerative medicine, among which a novel SiO(2)-CaO-MgO-P(2)O(5) bioactive glass (BG20) is an excellent candidate. However, apart from their biocompatibility and bioactivity, a porous structure is also a must for a tissue engineering scaffold in successfully fixing bone defect. The porosity is the outcome of the high temperature (500-1,000 °C) treatment in the fabricating process of the bioglass scaffold. Under the high temperature, the amorphous glass material will become crystallized at certain percentage in the glass matrix, and possibly leading to consequent changes in the mechanical strength, biodegradability and bioactivity. To elucidate the effect of phase transition on the change of the properties of BG20, the experiments in this report were designed to fine-tuning the heat treating temperatures to fabricate a series of BG20 powders with different crystallization structures. X-ray diffraction revealed a positive correlation between the heating temperature and the crystallization, as well as the compressive strength of the materials. In vitro degradation and ion analysis by ICP-AES demonstrated a similar releasing behavior of different ions including Mg(2+), Ca(2+) and Si(4+), which in common is the tendency of decreasing of the ion concentration along with the increasing of the treating temperature. Cell proliferation assay using both mouse fibroblasts (NIH3T3) and bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) showed little toxicity of the ionic extract of the BG20 powders at all the treating temperatures, while fibroblasts demonstrated a significant promoting in the percentage of proliferation. Furthermore, reverse-transcription and polymerase chain reaction analysis on two representative marker genes for early osteogenesis and endochondral ossification, respectively, type I collagen alpha 1 and Indian Hedge-hog, showed an interesting induction of both genes over their basal levels by the treatment of the ionic extract of BG20, implying its important capability in regulating the fate of differentiation of the BMSCs as a novel biomaterial in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
In this article, we, for the first time, investigated mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds for the delivery of vascular endothelial growth factor. We have found that mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds have significantly higher loading efficiency and more sustained release of vascular endothelial growth factor than non-mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds. In addition, vascular endothelial growth factor delivery from mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds has improved the viability of endothelial cells. The study has suggested that mesopore structures in mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds play an important role in improving the loading efficiency, decreasing the burst release, and maintaining the bioactivity of vascular endothelial growth factor, indicating that mesoporous bioactive glass scaffolds are an excellent carrier of vascular endothelial growth factor for potential bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
We present a soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) study of the stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LaRu(2)P(2). The observed electronic structure is in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, it is significantly different from its counterpart in high-temperature superconducting Fe pnictides. In particular, the bandwidth renormalization present in the Fe pnictides (~2-3) is negligible in LaRu(2)P(2) even though the mass enhancement is similar in both systems. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in LaRu(2) P(2) has a different origin with respect to the iron pnictides. Finally, we demonstrate that the increased probing depth of SX-ARPES, compared to the widely used ultraviolet ARPES, is essential in determining the bulk electronic structure in the experiment.

Abstract
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a potentially fatal complication of acute liver failure, associated with severe neurological dysfunction and coma. The brain's innate immune cells, microglia, have recently been implicated in the pathophysiology of HE. To date, however, only ex vivo studies have been used to characterize microglial involvement. Our study uses in vivo two-photon imaging of awake-behaving mice expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) under the Cx3cr1 promoter to examine microglial involvement in two different models of encephalopathy - a slower, fatal model of azoxymethane-induced HE and a rapid, reversible acute hyperammonemic encephalopathy (AHE) induced by an ammonia load. To investigate the potential contribution of microglia to the neurological deterioration seen in these two models, we developed a software to analyze microglial activation and motility in vivo. In HE, we found that microglia do not become activated prior to the onset of neurological dysfunction, but undergo activation with mildly impaired motility during the terminal stage IV. We demonstrate that this microglial activation coincides with blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening and brain edema. Conversely, both microglial activation and motility are unchanged during AHE, despite the mice developing pathologically increased plasma ammonia and severe neurological dysfunction. Our study indicates that microglial activation does not contribute to the early neurological deterioration observed in either HE or AHE. The late microglial activation in HE may therefore be associated with terminal BBB opening and brain edema, thus exacerbating the progression to coma and increasing mortality.

Abstract
Strontium (Sr), Zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and silicon (Si) are reported to be essential trace elements for the growth and mineralization of bone. We speculated that the combination of these bioactive elements in bioceramics may be effective to regulate the osteogenic property of bone-forming cells. In this study, two Sr-containing silicate bioceramics, Sr(2)ZnSi(2)O(7) (SZS) and Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7) (SMS), were prepared. The biological response of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to the two bioceramics (in the forms of powders and dense ceramic bulks) was systematically studied. In powder form, the effect of powder extracts on the viability and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of BMSCs was investigated. In ceramic disc form, both direct and indirect coculture of BMSCs with ceramic discs were used to investigate their biological response, including attachment, proliferation, ALP activity, and bone-related genes expression. Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and akermanite (Ca(2)MgSi(2)O(7), CMS) were used as control materials. The results showed that the Sr, Zn, and Si (or Sr, Mg, and Si)-containing ionic products from SZS and SMS powders enhanced ALP activity of BMSCs, compared to those from β-TCP. Both SZS and SMS ceramic discs supported the growth of BMSCs, and most importantly, significantly enhanced the ALP activity and bone-related genes expression of BMSCs as compared to β-TCP. The results suggest that the specific combination of bioactive ions (Sr, Zn, Si, e.g.) in bioceramics is a viable way to improve the biological performance of biomaterials, and the form of materials and surface properties were nonnegligible factors to influence cell response.

Abstract
Magnetic ion exchange resin was a very good advanced treatment process to remove organic matter from municipal wastewater, and three-dimensional excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy was widely used to analyze the characterization of the change in DOM. The results showed that both two-stage treatment process and the rate variation of inflow affected the removal effects of DOC and UV254 obviously, and the removal rates were 25.5% - 53.5% and 27.6% - 52.2%. The concentrations of DOC and UV254 were 3.29 mg x L(-1) and 0.057 cm(-1) in T2 effluent respectively. The fluorescence intensities of aromatic protein and visible fulvic-like were high in municipal secondary effluent. MIEX made the fluorescence intensities of tryptophan protein, aromatic protein and humic-like fluorescence peaks decreasing 38.2%, 85.8% and 85.7% respectively from secondary effluent, and make humic-like and visible fulvic-like fluorescence peaks disappearing. The fluorescence peak of soluble microbial byproducts appeared. The negative correlations were strong between the declining rates of tryptophan-like fluorescence intensity and aromatic protein fluorescence intensity and the rates of inflow. 50 - 100 L x h(-1) flow rate influenced most for the removal rate of each DOC. The linear treatment effect was higher for tryptohan-like and aromatic protein DOM by MIEX (R2 = 0.8348), and the treatment effect was the highest for aromatic protein DOM by MIEX (alpha = 850.2). The correlation between UV fulvic-like DOM and fluorescence intensity was worse than that between DOC and fluorescence intensity.

Abstract
The prognosis of T-cell lymphoma (TCL) has been shown to be associated with the clinical characteristics of patients. However, there is little knowledge of whether genetic variations also affect the prognosis of TCL. This study investigated the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily (TNFRSF) genes and the survival of patients with TCL. A total of 38 tag SNPs in 18 TNFRSF genes were genotyped using Sequenom platform in 150 patients with TCL. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates were plotted and significance was assessed using log-rank tests. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze each of these 38 SNPs with adjustment for covariates that might influence patient survival, including sex and international prognostic Index score. Hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Among the 38 SNPs tested, 3 were significantly associated with the survival of patients with TCL. These SNPs were located at LTβR (rs3759333C>T) and TNFRSF17 (rs2017662C>T and rs2071336C>T). The 5-year survival rates were significantly different among patients carrying different genotypes and the HRs for death between the different genotypes ranged from 0.45 to 2.46. These findings suggest that the SNPs in TNFRSF genes might be important determinants for the survival of TCL patients.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the expression of Popeye domain containing 3 (Popdc3) and its correlation with clinicopathological features and prognosis of gastric cancer. METHODS The method of immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the expression of Popdc3 in 306 cases of human gastric cancer and 84 noncancerous gastric tissues. Simultaneously, the relationship between Popdc3 expression and the survival of the patients was retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Popdc3 was detected in 72 (85.71%) of 84 human nontumor mucosa. High expression of Popdc3 protein was detected in 78 (25.49%) of 306 human gastric cancer cases, and low expression was detected in 228 (74.51%). Low expression of Popdc3 correlated with depth of invasion (P < 0.0001), regional lymph nodes (P < 0.0001) and distant metastasis (P = 0.02), and tumor, nodes, metastasis (TNM) stages (P < 0.0001). On multivariate analysis, only the patient's gender, regional lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stages, and the expression of Popdc3 were independent prognostic factors in patients with gastric cancer. The Kaplan-Meier plot showed that low Popdc3 expression had a much more significant effect on the survival of those patients with early-stage tumors (χ² = 104.741, P < 0.0001), with a > 51.9% reduction in the three-year survival compared with high Popdc3 expression. In late stages, the difference was also significant (χ² = 5.930, P = 0.015), with a 32.6% reduction in the three-year survival. CONCLUSION Reduced expression of Popdc3 may play a significant role in the carcinogenesis and progression of gastric cancer. Popdc3 may be an independent prognostic factor.

Abstract
This study sought to prepare a calcium silicate cement (CSC) with varying additions of tricalcium aluminate (Ca(3)Al(2)O(6), C(3)A), and to find an optimal amount of C(3)A by evaluating the effect of C(3)A on the physicochemical and in vitro biological properties of the CS/C(3)A cement. The results indicated that the addition of C(3)A into CSC reduced the setting time and improved the compressive strength especially at the early stage of setting. However, the 15% C(3)A was too much for the CS/C(3)A system and did harm to its strength development. Furthermore, the CS/C(3)A cement was bioactive and biocompatible in vitro, and had a stimulatory effect on the cell growth, when the content of C(3)A was 5 or 10%. When compared with the commercially available Dycal(®), the CS/C(3)A cement was notably more compatible with the human dental pulp cells. Therefore, the CS/C(3)A cement with 5-10% C(3)A produced the best compromise between setting and in vitro biological properties, and may be a promising candidate for endodontic use.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to fabricate dual drug-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) electrospun composite mat, with the two model drugs (fluorescein (FLU) and rhodamine B (RHB)) releasing in separate and distinct release kinetics. The PLGA-based electrospun mat loading with the same amount of FLU (5%, with respect to the weight of PLGA) and different amounts of RHB-loaded MSNs (5, 15 and 25%, with respect to the weight of PLGA) were prepared and studied for their releasing properties. The morphology of the composite mats was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Finally, the release profiles of the dual drug-loaded electrospun mats were measured, and the results indicated that the FLU and RHB released from the PLGA/FLU/RHB-loaded MSNs electrospun mats showed separate and distinct profiles. Most of the FLU was released rapidly during the 324 h of the trial; however, RHB showed a sustained release behavior, and the release rate could be controlled by the content of the RHB-loaded MSNs in the electrospun mat.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objective
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different desensitizing agents on the prevention of root caries when applied to root surfaces.
Materials and Methods
Thirty human roots were sectioned into quarters with a 3 × 4 mm window. A desensitizer (VX, Clinpro™ XT Varnish; SP, Seal & Protect®; or PB, Clearfil™ Protect Bond) was applied to three of the quarters in each window. Teeth were stored separately in water for one day, 30 days, or 60 days. The remaining quarter, without the application of desensitizer, served as a control. After storage in water, all specimens were subjected to pH cycling. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the demineralization bands created on the subsurface layer. The weight percentages of fluorine (F), silica, and calcium (Ca) were determined using electron probe microanalysis to quantify the elemental distributions in the root dentin. The concentrations of F released during a pH cycling were measured.
Results
For the control group, the average lesion depth was 18.92 ± 5.42 μm, and the average Ca loss was 15.66% ± 6.80% in the superficial layer and 30.44% ± 9.61% in the subsurface layer. No Ca loss occurred in the desensitizer-treated groups. All desensitizing agents remained intact for at least 60 days. F levels were increased in the hybrid layer but not in the subhybrid area. Outward release of F diminished with time.
Conclusion
The F-containing resin-based desensitizers protected exposed root surfaces from demineralization. F liberated from the desensitizers was detected only at minimal levels.

Abstract
NK cell transcripts are increased in biopsies with antibody-mediated rejection, whereas T cell transcripts are increased in T cell-mediated rejection. However, NK and T cells share many features, creating potential ambiguity. Therefore to estimate the NK- versus T cell transcript burdens separately, we defined nonoverlapping transcripts selective for NK cells (N = 4) or T cells (N = 5). We compared NK- versus T cell transcript burdens in microarrays from 403 kidney transplant biopsies (182 early, 221 late). In late biopsies, high NK-cell transcript expression was associated with antibody-mediated rejection, correlating with microvascular inflammation and donor specific HLA antibody. However, some early biopsies with T cell-mediated rejection had high NK-cell transcript expression, as well as T cell transcripts, without evidence of antibody-mediated rejection or DSA, correlating with interstitial inflammation and tubulitis. Both NK-cell and T cell transcripts were moderately increased in many kidneys with inflammation secondary to injury or atrophy scarring. These results support the distinct role of NK cells in late antibody-mediated rejection, but indicate a role for NK-transcript expressing cells (NK cells or T cells with NK features) both in T cell-mediated rejection and in inflammation associated with injury and atrophy scarring.
