Abstract
Irreversible lethal electroporation (IRE) is a new non-thermal ablation modality that uses short pulses of high amplitude static electric fields (up 1000 V/cm) to create irreversible pores in the cell membrane, thus, causing cell death. Recently, IRE has emerged as a promising clinical modality for cancer disease treatment. Here, we investigated the responses of tumour human HeLa cells when subjected to IRE in the presence of BNNTs. These consist of tiny tubes of B and N atoms (arranged in hexagons) with diameters ranging from a 1 to 3 nanometres and lengths < 2 μm. BNNTs have attracted wide attention because of their unique electrical properties. We speculate that BNNTs, when interacting with cells exposed to static electrical fields, amplify locally the electric field, leading to cell death. In this work, electroporation assays were performed with a commercial electroporator using the cell- specific protocol suggested by the supplier (exponential decay wave, time constant 20 ms) with the specific aim to compare IRE in absence and in presence of BNNTs. We observed that BNNTs have the capacity to decrease substantially the voltage required for IRE. When cells were pulsed at 800 V/cm, we observed a 2,2-fold reduction in cell survival in the presence of BNNTs compared to controls. We conclude that the death of the tumour cells exposed to IRE is strongly enhanced in the presence of BNNTs, indicating their potential therapeutic application.

Abstract
Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae has recently spread rapidly throughout China. In this study, we characterized a carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae isolate that produced both KPC-2 and IMP-4 type carbapenemases. A clinical isolate of K. pneumoniae, resistant to both meropenem and imipenem, was recovered from a urine sample. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined using the broth microdilution method and Etest (bioMérieux, France). Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) were used for gene type analysis. bla (KPC) and the encoding genes of ESBLs and plasmid-mediated AmpC enzymes were polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified and sequenced. Plasmids were analyzed by transformation, enzyme restriction and Southern blot. PCR analysis revealed that the isolate was simultaneously carrying bla (KPC-2), bla (IMP-4), bla (TEM-1), and bla (OKP-B) genes. MLST assigned the isolate to a novel sequence type, ST476. bla (KPC-2)-harbouring plasmids of the isolate and comparative strains had similar EcoRI and HindIII restriction maps, while IMP-4-harbouring plasmids had variable HindIII restriction maps. Coexistence of bla (KPC-2) and bla (IMP-4) was probably due to bla (IMP-4)-harbouring plasmid transmission into KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae (ST476). The concomitant presence of these genes is alarming and poses both therapeutic and infection control problems.

Abstract
Wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, has historically been a major limiting factor in wheat production. Identification of isolate Ug99 in Uganda in 1999 highlighted the vulnerability of a large proportion of the global wheat crop and raised international concerns. Since initial detection, seven races have been identified in the Ug99 lineage and occurrence has been confirmed in nine countries (4). During rust surveys of Eritrea undertaken in October 2010, stem rust was found to be widespread throughout the highland wheat-growing areas. Presence of P. graminis f. sp. tritici was recorded in 95% of the 92 cereal fields surveyed, with high disease severity (>40%) recorded at 50 sites. Collected stem rust samples were analyzed for race identity in a level 3 biocontainment laboratory in Canada. Nine collections yielded viable spores for infection studies. Virulence analysis with 20 differentials in the letter-code nomenclature system (1) identified two races from repeated experiments; TTKST (four confirmed isolates) and PTKST (five confirmed isolates). Both races belong to the Ug99 lineage and both exhibit combined Sr31 and Sr24 virulence. TTKST and PTKST differ only in their virulence or avirulence to Sr21, respectively. This first confirmation of TTKST and PTKST in Eritrea is important because it represents further geographical spread of Ug99-related races. Since first detection of a Sr24 variant of Ug99 (race TTKST) in Kenya in 2006 (1), these variants have become the predominant P. graminis f. sp. tritici pathotypes in most of eastern Africa. Race TTKST caused epidemics in Kenya in 2007, and race PTKST was first detected in Ethiopia the same year (T. Fetch, unpublished data). Recent detection of race PTKST in three additional southern Africa countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique [2,3]) indicates on-going range expansion within the African continent. Sr24-virulent variants of Ug99 are a cause for concern since a high frequency of cultivars from South America, Australia, the United States, and the CIMMYT are known to possess the Sr24 resistance gene. On the basis of observed occurrence and postulated migration routes of the original Ug99 (race TTKSK), the confirmed presence of TTKST and PTKST in Eritrea increases the possibility for range expansion out of Africa by crossing the Red Sea and into the Arabian Peninsula. Abstract
Clostridium difficile is a common cause of nosocomial diarrhoea in the USA. To develop a score model that would help to identify severe versus mild or moderate C. difficile infection (CDI) upon admission we performed a retrospective cohort study. Between January 2004 and December 2007, 255 patients met inclusion criteria for this study. Severe CDI was defined as cases that required colectomy, intensive care unit management, ended in death, or hospitalisation of >10 days. Data recorded included past medical history, physical examination on admission, laboratory data and imaging/colonoscopy data. To create the CDI severity index (CSI) score, we included four risk factors for severe CDI that were identified by univariate analysis: history of malignancy, white blood cell count at admission >20,000/dL, blood albumin <3.0mg/dL, and creatinine at admission >1.5-fold the baseline value. One point was assigned to each of the risk factors. As indicated by a c-statistic of 0.78, the CSI score predicted severe CDI much better than chance (c-statistics of 0.50). The risk of developing severe CDI increased by a factor of 2.9 (95% CI: 1.82-4.59) for each 1-point increase in the CSI score. A CSI score with a cut-off value of 2 had a sensitivity and specificity of 82% and 65%, respectively. The CSI score may quantify the risk of severe CDI at the time of admission, and help in early identification of patients who may benefit from more aggressive treatment.

Abstract
Experimental evidence for the correlated two-electron one-photon transitions (1s(-2)→2s(-1)2p(-1)) following single-photon K-shell double ionization is reported. The double K-shell vacancy states in solid Mg, Al, and Si were produced by means of monochromatized synchrotron radiation, and the two-electron one-photon radiative transitions were observed by using a wavelength dispersive spectrometer. The two-electron one-photon transition energies and the branching ratios of the radiative one-electron to two-electron transitions were determined and compared to available perturbation theory predictions and configuration interaction calculations.

Abstract
Silver nanocomposite coatings are prepared by the sol-gel method for the prevention of biofilm formation on the surface of medical implanted devices. High-temperature processing of such coatings can lead to diffusion of nanosilver and reduce the amount of available silver particles for long-term effects. Using a low-temperature sol-gel method, we have successfully prepared silane-based matrices, phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTEOS), containing different amounts of Ag nanoparticles. The incorporation of a silver salt into the sol-gel matrix resulted in a desired silver release rate, i.e. high initial release rate followed by a lower sustained release for more than 15 days, as determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been employed to investigate the morphology of the film surfaces before and after immersion in a nutrient-rich bacterial suspension of approximately 10⁸ CFU ml⁻¹, which was incubated for up to 30 days at 37 °C. It was found that thin films containing 35 nm particles could prevent the formation of biofilm for over 30 days. The presence of surface silver before and after 3, 9 and 15 days immersion was confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract
ABSTRACTNanostructured carbon has been deposited in silica aerogels by chemical vapor infiltration using acetylene or ferrocene at moderate temperatures. Using analytical electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy, we have observed various carbon rings and nanotubes in the silica aerogel-based carbon composite. Both X-ray microanalysis and nano-probe diffraction techniques have been used to confirm the presence of those carbon nanostructures. The morphologies and structural properties of the carbon nanotubes and rings have also been examined in detail.

Abstract
A novel polysaccharide isolated from Angelica sinensis, named APS-1d showed cytotoxic activity towards several cancer cell lines in vitro. However, the precise antitumor mechanisms of this compound are unknown. In this study, we investigated the pro-apoptotic effects of APS-1d in human cervical cancer HeLa cells both in vitro and in vivo, and further elucidated the mechanisms of this action. Inhibition of HeLa cell proliferation was determined by MTT assay and the therapeutic efficacy of APS-1d was evaluated by human cancer xenografts in nude mice. Cell apoptosis was examined with flow cytometry and TUNEL assay. The mechanism of action of APS-1d was investigated by Western blot analysis. APS-1d decreased HeLa cell proliferation in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in vitro. In addition, APS-1d significantly inhibited tumor growth in athymic nude mice. Characteristic manifestations of apoptosis including apoptotic morphological features and the sub- G(0)/G(1) peaks were observed when the cells were treated with APS-1d. Further analysis showed that APS-1d-induced apoptosis was associated with the regulation of Bcl-2 family protein expression, a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential, and an increase in the cytosolic cytochrome c levels. Sequentially, APS-1d increased the activities of caspase-9, -3, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase in a concentration-dependent manner, however, no obvious activation of Bid and caspase-8 was observed. Pretreatment with Z-LEHD-FMK, a specific inhibitor of caspase-9, significantly attenuated APS-1d-induced cell apoptosis, and activation of caspase-3. Taken together, our studies indicate that APS-1d is capable of inhibiting HeLa cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in these cells which primarily involves the activation of the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway.

Abstract
The shark antigen-binding V(NAR) domain has the potential to provide an attractive alternative to traditional biotherapeutics based on its small size, advantageous physiochemical properties, and unusual ability to target clefts in enzymes or cell surface molecules. The V(NAR) shares many of the properties of the well-characterised single-domain camelid V(H)H but is much less understood at the molecular level. We chose the hen-egg-lysozyme-specific archetypal Type I V(NAR) 5A7 and used ribosome display in combination with error-prone mutagenesis to interrogate the entire sequence space. We found a high level of mutational plasticity across the V(NAR) domain, particularly within the framework 2 and hypervariable region 2 regions. A number of residues important for affinity were identified, and a triple mutant combining A1D, S61R, and G62R resulted in a K(D) of 460 pM for hen egg lysozyme, a 20-fold improvement over wild-type 5A7, and the highest K(D) yet reported for V(NAR)-antigen interactions. These findings were rationalised using structural modelling and indicate the importance of residues outside the classical complementarity determining regions in making novel antigen contacts that modulate affinity. We also located two solvent-exposed residues (G15 and G42), distant from the V(NAR) paratope, which retain function upon mutation to cysteine and have the potential to be exploited as sites for targeted covalent modification. Our findings with 5A7 were extended to all known NAR structures using an in-depth bioinformatic analysis of sequence data available in the literature and a newly generated V(NAR) database. This study allowed us to identify, for the first time, both V(NAR)-specific and V(NAR)/Ig V(L)/TCR V(alpha) overlapping hallmark residues, which are critical for the structural and functional integrity of the single domain. Intriguingly, each of our designated V(NAR)-specific hallmarks align precisely with previously defined mutational 'cold spots' in natural nurse shark cDNA sequences. These findings will aid future V(NAR) engineering and optimisation studies towards the development of V(NAR) single-domain proteins as viable biotherapeutics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Abnormal glutamatergic activity is implicated in neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders. Selective glutamate receptor antagonists were highly effective in animal models of stroke and seizures but failed in further clinical development because of serious side effects, including an almost complete set of symptoms of schizophrenia. Therefore, the novel polyvalent glutamatergic agent 3,5-dibromo-L-phenylalanine (3,5-DBr-L-Phe) was studied in rat models of stroke, seizures and sensorimotor gating deficit. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH 3,5-DBr-L-Phe was administered intraperitoneally as three boluses after intracerebral injection of endothelin-1 (ET-1) adjacent to the middle cerebral artery to cause brain injury (a model of stroke). 3,5-DBr-L-Phe was also given as a single bolus prior to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) injection to induce seizures or prior to the administration of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist dizocilpine (MK-801) to cause disruption of prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle (sensorimotor gating deficit). KEY RESULTS Brain damage caused by ET-1 was reduced by 52%, which is comparable with the effects of MK-801 in this model as reported by others. 3,5-DBr-L-Phe significantly reduced seizures induced by PTZ without the significant effects on arterial blood pressure and heart rate normally caused by NMDA antagonists. 3,5-DBr-L-Phe prevented the disruption of PPI measured 3 days after the administration of ET-1. 3,5-DBr-L-Phe also eliminated sensorimotor gating deficit caused by MK-801. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS The pharmacological profile of 3,5-DBr-L-Phe might be beneficial not only for developing a therapy for the neurological and cognitive symptoms of stroke and seizures but also for some neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to assess the biodegradation of phenanthrene by Flavobacteria FCN2 which was isolated from coke plant sludge via a classical shaken liquid medium enrichment method. The strain FCN2 can decompose phenanthrene (50 mg l(-1)) completely within 5 days. The values of pH decrease to 6.7 from 7.2 during degradation periods. And a detailed phenanthrene metabolism was assayed by using FTIR, UV and GC-MS. For FTIR, appearance of new broad absorption bands at 2858 cm(-1), 2927 cm(-1), 2955 cm(-1) and another new strong absorption band at 1734 cm(-1) in metabolites demonstrates that carboxyl group produced during phenanthrene degradation. Besides this, a very strong absorption band appears at 1260 cm(-1). It is ascribed to C-C stretching vibration band in carbonyl group of arone. Two weak adsorption at 334 nm and 349 nm in UV spectra were assigned to the n-pi* transition of CO of aldehyde. Two metabolites, phenanthrene-dihydrodiol and naphthalene-1-diol were identified in neutral fraction of phenanthrene degradation by using GC-MS. As a result carboxylic acids and arone were generated during biodegradation of phenanthrene by Flavobacteria FCN2.

Abstract
We demonstrate an experimental control of electron localization in deuterium molecular ions created and dissociated by the combined action of an attosecond pulse train and a many-cycle infrared (IR) pulse. The attosecond pulse train is synthesized using both even and odd high order harmonics of the driving IR frequency so that it can strobe the IR field once per IR cycle. An asymmetric ejection of the deuterium ions oscillates with the full IR period when the APT-IR time-delay is scanned. The observed control is due to the creation of a coherent superposition of 1s sigma{g} and 2p sigma{u} states via interference between one-photon and two-photon dissociation channels.

Abstract
Based on the phylogenetic and biogeographical studies of the glyptosternoid fishes in Qinghai-Tibet area, the following hypothesis is proposed: the speciation of this group has a direct relationship with the three uplift intervals of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This process was explained by the theory of vicariance of biogeography. The ancestor of this group was similar to Bagarus and/or Glyptothorax, which still have a wide distribution. At the moment when the Tethys sea closed, the Indian tectonic plate collided with the Eurasian tectonic plate, so the Glyptothorax-like and Bagarus-like ancestors entered Eurasia and gradually became widely distributed. After the Pleistocene, with the enforced colliding, the gradual uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau brought about the current water environment, and the Glyptosternoids were generated from Glyptothorax-like fish under this environment. The present Glyptosternum, distributed across the Himalayas is the ancestor of Glyptosternoids. In the three uplift intervals of the plateau, the water system of this region was separated gradually and Glyptosternum-like ancestor was isolated in different rivers and evolved into various species. All this resulted in the speciation and formation of the biogeographical pattern of glyptosternoids.

Abstract
Two-color (800 and 400 nm) short (45 fs) linearly polarized pulses are used to ionize and dissociate D2 into a neutral deuterium atom and a deuteron. The yields and energies of the ions are measured left and right along the polarization vector. As the relative phase of the two colors is varied, strong yield asymmetries are found in the ion-energy regions traditionally identified as bond softening, above-threshold dissociation and rescattering. The asymmetries in these regions are quite different. A model based on the dynamic coupling by the laser field of the gerade and ungerade states in the molecular ion accounts for many of the observed features.

Abstract
By means of a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy, we have for the first time separated spectral features pertaining to different two-electron atomic processes in the vicinity of an inner-shell threshold. Contributions of shakeoff, shakeup, and resonant 1s3p double excitations were extracted from the Ar KM-M{2,3}M x-ray satellite line intensity measured as a function of photon energy from [1s3p] double excitation threshold to saturation. The isolated [1s3p]nln'l' excitation spectrum is critically compared to the outcome of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock model with relaxation.

Abstract
Calmodulin (CaM) is a highly conserved and ubiquitous Ca(2+)-binding protein regulating intracellular Ca(2+) concentration by acting as a sensor of this divalent cation in eukaryotic cells. Being such a very important signal sensor, CaM is susceptible to undergo many posttranslational modifications. One of these important modifications is its phosphorylation. Our previous investigations showed that CaM and calmodulin-like protein (CaLP) cloned from Pinctada fucata have many different characteristics in spite of their high similarity to each other. We have narrowed down that the C-terminal domains of CaM and CaLP are responsible for their discrepant subcellular localizations and shuttling of CaLP when it is co-transfected with p21(Cip1), which is commonly considered as an important cell cycle regulating protein. In this study, we first predicted the potential phosphorylation site responsible for the shuttling and confirmed by fluorescence confocal microscopy. Together with fluorescence activated cell sorter analysis, we further investigated the releasing ability of wild type and point mutated CaLP from arrested cell cycle caused by p21(Cip1) overexpression. By performing pull-down analysis and phosphorylation status of CaLP in cytoplasm fraction of transfected COS-7 cells with CaLP alone and phosphorylation status of CaLP in nuclear fraction of co-transfected COS-7 cells with CaLP and p21(Cip), we propose that the CaLP staying in the cytoplasm is in the state of phosphorylation, but when p21(Cip1) is overexpressed in mammalian cells, some signal triggers CaLP dephosphorylation and translocation into the nucleus.

Abstract
We report on the photon energy dependence of the K-shell double photoionization (DPI) of Mg, Al, and Si. The DPI cross sections were derived from high-resolution measurements of x-ray spectra following the radiative decay of the K-shell double vacancy states. Our data evince the relative importance of the final-state electron-electron interaction to the DPI. By comparing the double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross-section ratios for neutral atoms with convergent close-coupling calculations for He-like ions, the effect of outer shell electrons on the K-shell DPI process is assessed. Universal scaling of the DPI cross sections with the effective nuclear charge for neutral atoms is revealed.

Abstract
Wild species in the Triticeae tribe are very valuable resources for agronomic improvement in cereal crop species. Intergeneric hybrids were produced between several barley cultivars and perennial species in the genera Elymus, Thinopyrum, and Pseudoroegneria. Caryopsis formation and subsequent plantlet regeneration from embryo culture were variable depending on the hybrid combinations. Chromosome numbers and hybrid identity were confirmed by GISH analysis on the somatic cells of the hybrids. While the hybrids showed very robust vegetative growth and exceeded the parental spikes in size, their floral morphologies resembled that of the wild species. Meiotic chromosome analysis revealed that the bivalent formation frequency per cell ranged from 0.06 in Hordeum vulgare 'Betzes' x Elymus curvatus to 3.0 in Elymus humidus x H. vulgare 'Manley'. By GISH analysis on the meiocytes of the hybrid E. humidus x 'Manley', the frequency of autosyndetic bivalents exceeded the allosyndetic bivalent formation, which gave an insight into the genome constitution of E. humidus as an autoallohexploid species. Regardless of the low allosyndetic chromosome pairing between barley and E. humidus, this combination may be useful for further input, since E. humidus is known to carry many valuable genes for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract
Radiation hybrid (RH) mapping technique was exploited to determine chromosome locations of 26 human novel full length cDNAs recently cloned. All these cDNA clones were isolated from human cord blood CD (+) (34) cells and may be related to regulation of hematopoiesis. 23 genes were successfully mapped to chromosomal positions, while RH analyses were not possible in the remaining 3 cases. RH technique is indeed a powerful tool for mapping novel cDNA sequences due to its rapidity, precision, convenience and reproducibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibronectin (FN) is a component of the extracellular matrix that participates in wound healing in various tissues as an adhesive ligand for integrins (Itgs). To determine whether these molecules play similar roles during menstrual repair, we evaluated the expression and localization of FN and specific Itgs in the primate endometrium under hormonally controlled conditions. METHODS Ovariectomized rhesus macaques were treated for 2 weeks with estradiol (E(2)) followed by E(2) with progesterone for 2 weeks. On day 28, progesterone was withdrawn and uteri were collected during menstruation, postmenstrual repair, and the proliferative and secretory phases. Analysis was by focused microarray, real time PCR, in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. RESULTS Progesterone withdrawal induced significant elevations of FN, Itg alpha5 and Itg beta1 transcripts during menstruation as compared to day 28 (FN: P < 0.01; Itg alpha5: P < 0.05; Itg beta1: P < 0.05; real time PCR). These increases were concentrated in the glandular epithelium (FN) and stroma (Itg alpha5beta1) of the uppermost zones. Cyclic changes in Itg alpha3 occurred in the glandular epithelium. CONCLUSIONS Spatially and temporally restricted peaks of expression of FN and its Itg receptors are closely correllated with menstruation and postmenstrual repair in the primate endometrium.

Abstract
High-resolution x-ray measurements were performed with a von Hamos-type bent crystal spectrometer using for the detection of the diffracted photons either a back-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a front-illuminated one. For each CCD the main x-ray emission lines (e.g., Kalpha, Kbeta, Lalpha, and Lbeta) of a variety of elements were measured in order to probe the performances of the two detectors between 1 and 18 keV. From the observed x-ray lines the linearity of the energy response, the noise level, the energy resolution, and the quantum efficiency ratio of the two CCDs were determined.

Abstract
We have used 2-aminopurine (2AP) as a fluorescent probe in the template strand of a 13/20mer primer/template (D) to detect deoxynucleoside triphosphates (N)-dependent conformational changes exhibited by RB69 DNA polymerase (ED) complexes. The rates and amplitudes of fluorescence quenching depend hyperbolically on the [dTTP] when a dideoxy-primer/template (ddP/T) with 2AP as the templating base (n position) is used. No detectable fluorescence changes occur when a ddP/T with 2AP positioned 5' to the templating base (n + 1 position) is used. With a deoxy-primer/template (dP/T) with 2AP in the n position, a rapid fluorescence quenching occurs within 2 ms, followed by a second, slower fluorescence quenching with a rate constant similar to base incorporation as determined by chemical quench. With a dP/T having 2AP in the n + 1 position, there is a [dNTP]-dependent fluorescence enhancement that occurs at a rate comparable to dNMP incorporation. Collectively, the results favor a minimal kinetic scheme in which population of two distinct biochemical states of the ternary EDN complex precedes the nucleotidyl transfer reaction. Observed differences between dP/T and ddP/T ternary complexes indicate that the 3' hydroxyl group of the primer plays a critical role in determining the rate constants of transitions that lead to strong deoxynucleoside triphosphate binding prior to chemistry.

Abstract
Stomach cancer is a serious public health problem in China. 5,10-Methylenetetralydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) may be involved in both DNA methylation and DNA synthesis. Folate deficiency is associated with cancer risk that may be modulated by a genetic variation in the MTHFR gene in folate metabolism. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the association between polymorphisms of the MTHFR gene and the risk of stomach cancer. This study also explored the modification effects of fruit and vegetable intake (one of the main constituents is folate) on the risk of this disease. A population-based case-control study was conducted in Taixing, China, consisting of 206 newly diagnosed cases with primary stomach cancer and 415 healthy population controls. Polymorphisms of MTHFR C677T and A1298C were assayed by polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) techniques. The data were analysed using the logistic regression model. No obvious association between the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism and the risk of stomach cancer was observed in this study. The frequencies of 677 C/C, C/T, and T/T were 34.5, 50.9, and 14.6%, respectively, in controls. The frequency of the MTHFR 677 wild homozygotic genotype was 25.8% in cases, which was lower than that in controls (34.5%). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the MTHFR 677 any T genotype was 2.05 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.26-3.34) when compared with the C/C genotype. In the low fruit and vegetable intake group an increasing trend was observed with the T allele exposure, p = 0.0056. The adjusted ORs were 1.68 (95% CI = 0.86-3.29) for the C/T genotype and 3.58 (95% CI = 1.46-8.75) for the T/T genotype, respectively. The MTHFR 677 any T genotype was associated with an increased risk of primary stomach cancer among the Chinese population. Folate deficiency might modify the MTHFR gene polymorphism and influence the risk of stomach cancer.

Abstract
The impact of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) Gly388Arg polymorphism on bladder cancer is unknown. We found no clear correlations between the FGFR4 genotype and risk of bladder cancer or pathological parameters. Neither the polymorphism nor TP53 mutation status was an independent predictor of prognosis, but they might act jointly on the disease-specific survival of patients.

Abstract
Therapeutic and environmental aromatic amines and hydrazines are substrates for the arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NAT). In all, 10 transgenic lines containing either the human NAT1 or NAT2 transgene were developed using multiple promoters. The presence of the transgene was confirmed by determining copy number, mRNA and enzyme activity. Despite some lines having high copy numbers of the transgene, only modest or no increases in enzymatic activity could be found in a variety of tissues. The NAT1 transgene could not be bred to homozygosity. The cytomegalovirus (CMV)-promoted NAT1 transgene increased endogenous Nat1 mRNA levels in liver and had little effect on endogenous Nat2 mRNA levels. The presence of the CMV-promoted NAT2 transgene appeared to suppress endogenous hepatic Nat2 mRNA, but did not alter Nat1 mRNA levels. The failure to achieve high expression of any of the transgenes suggests that overexpression of NAT genes may have harmful effects during development.

Abstract
A wedge-shaped structure made of split-ring resonators (SRR) and wires is numerically simulated to evaluate its refraction behavior. Four frequency bands, namely, the stop band, left-handed band, ultralow-index band, and positive-index band, are distinguished according to the refracted field distributions. Negative phase velocity inside the wedge is demonstrated in the left-handed band and the Snell's Law is conformed in terms of its refraction behaviors in different frequency bands. Our results confirmed that negative index of refraction indeed exists in such a composite metamaterial and also provided a convincing support to the results of previous Snell's Law experiments.

Abstract
Fusarium head blight (FHB) reduces grain yield and quality in common and durum wheat. Host FHB resistance is an effective control measure that is achieved by stacking multiple resistance genes into a wheat line. Therefore, breeders would benefit from knowing which resistance sources carry different resistance genes. A diverse collection of FHB-resistant and -susceptible wheat lines was characterized with microsatellite markers linked to FHB resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on chromosomes 2DL, 3BS (distal to the centromere), 3BSc (proximal to the centromere), 4B, 5AS and 6BS identified in wheat lines Maringa, Sumai 3 and Wuhan 1. Putative Sumai 3 QTLs were commonly observed in advanced breeding lines, whereas putative Maringa and Wuhan 1 QTLs were relatively rare. Marker data suggested the 3BS, 3BSc and 5AS QTLs in the Brazilian cv. Maringa were derived from Asian germplasm and not from Frontana or other Brazilian lines. Haplotype diversity was reduced near the 5AS QTL, which might impact the deployment of this QTL. Finally, Brazilian germplasm was not closely related to other resistance sources and might be useful for pyramiding with Asian wheat-derived FHB resistance.

Abstract
To explore the effect of NF-kappa B on bcl-x gene transcription in extended drug resistance leukemia cell line HL-60/E6, drug-resistant subline HL-60/E6 was derived by intermittently exposing HL-60 cells to 6 ng/ml epirubicin. Indirect immunofluorescence was used to demonstrate the location of NF-kappa B-RelA in HL-60/E6 cells. FCM analysis and RT-PCR were used to detect the efficiency of liposome-mediated ODN transfection and the change of bcl-XL mRNA levels after 5 mumol/L phosphorothioate (PS)-derivatized antisense (AS) oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) directed to RelA was transferred into HL-60/E6 cells. The results showed that RelA remained persistently active and located at the nuclei of HL-60/E6 cells, but in the cytoplasm of HL-60 cells, the efficiency of liposome-mediated ODN transfection was significantly higher than that of null ODN (P < 0.01 in 4 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h). Exposure of HL-60/E6 cells to 5 mumol/L AS-PS-ODN directed to RelA led to a maximal 40% decline of bcl-XL mRNA levels within 8 h. The inhibition rate of bcl-XL mRNA was (15 +/- 1.79)%, (28 +/- 2.34)%, (40 +/- 3.47)%, (20 +/- 1.54)%, in 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 15 h, respectively, but it was less than 15% in control group. It was concluded that NF-kappa B was involved in regulating bcl-x transcription. It was suggested that NF-kappa B was an important factor for drug resistance in leukemia cells.

Abstract
Interest in the biology of adipose tissue has undergone a revival in recent years with the discovery of a host of genes that contribute to the regulation of satiety and metabolic rate. The catecholamines have long been known to be key modulators of adipose tissue lipolysis and the hydrolysis of triglyceride energy stores. However, more recent efforts to understand the role of individual adrenergic receptor subtypes expressed in adipocytes and their signal transduction pathways have revealed a complexity not previously appreciated. Combined with this interest in the modulation of adipocyte metabolism is a renewed focus upon brown adipose tissue and the mechanisms of whole body thermogenesis in general. The discovery of novel homologs of the brown fat uncoupling protein (UCP) such as UCP2 and UCP3 has provoked intensive study of these mitochondrial proteins and the role that they play in fuel metabolism. The story of the novel UCPs has proven to be intriguing and still incompletely understood. Here, we review the status of adipose tissue from inert storage depot to endocrine organ, interesting signal transduction pathways triggered by beta-adrenergic receptors in adipocytes, the potential of these receptors for discriminating and coordinated metabolic regulation, and current views on the role of UCP2 and UCP3 based on physiological studies and gene knockout models.
