Abstract
BACKGROUND Apical ballooning syndrome (ABS) or stress cardiomyopathy is increasingly recognized as a cause of acute coronary syndrome with unobstructed coronaries, but remains underdiagnosed. OBJECTIVES Retrospective review of the angiographic database (between January 2006 and December 2010) to obtain incidence and clinical presentation of ABS at our center. ABS was defined according to the modified Mayo Clinic criteria. CASE RESULTS Normal or unobstructed coronaries on angiography were observed in 1780 (25.4%) of a total of 6983 patients who underwent urgent or emergency coronary angiography. Twelve patients (0.17%) fulfilled the modified Mayo Clinic criteria for ABS. Eleven patients (92%) were aged ≥ 50 years (median 68 years, range 27-86 years), and 10 were female (83%). Four patients (31%) presented with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and 1 patient presented with cardiogenic shock and acute coronary syndrome. Emotional stress was the precipitant in 4 patients (33%). Unusual precipitants like cold-water immersion and intravenous chemotherapy were observed. All 12 patients had the typical appearance of ABS on left ventriculogram (75%) or echocardiography (25%). Follow-up imaging with either echocardiography or magnetic resonance imaging (done in all 12 patients) up to 16 weeks after discharge showed that left ventricular function had normalized. CONCLUSIONS The incidence and clinical features of ABS in our tertiary center are similar to those reported in other settings. Unusual precipitants were observed, but left ventriculograms were performed less frequently and could be contributory to the under-diagnosis of ABS.

Abstract
We have used low-energy implanted muons as a volume sensitive probe of the magnetic properties of EuO(1-x) thin films. We find that static and homogeneous magnetic order persists up to the elevated T(C) in the doped samples, and the muon signal displays the double dome feature also observed in the sample magnetization. Our results appear incompatible with either the magnetic phase separation or bound magnetic polaron descriptions previously suggested to explain the elevated T(C), but are compatible with an RKKY-like interaction mediating magnetic interactions above 69 K.

Zaidi A, Ionescu A, Sharma R, Heatley M. Echocardiographic surveillance of aortic valve stenosis: towards a standardized approach. THE JOURNAL OF HEART VALVE DISEASE 2012; 21:707-713. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) portends a poor prognosis, and there is growing evidence that even mild disease carries significant morbidity. Systematic echocardiographic monitoring of asymptomatic disease is therefore essential to optimize the effectiveness of interventions. Inconsistencies exist, however, between different guidelines, and this may lead to inefficient resource utilization or, conversely, to inadequate monitoring. The study aim was to assess the appropriateness of AS surveillance echocardiography at the authors' institution. An additional aim was to document AS progression patterns in a contemporary British population, for which few data currently exist. METHODS British, European, and North American guidelines relating to echocardiographic surveillance of asymptomatic AS were examined. A retrospective analysis of practice at the authors' institution was conducted, with timing of surveillance compared to guidelines. Progression was documented by monitoring the effective orifice area (EOA) and peak pressure gradient (PPG). RESULTS Mean progression rates were consistent with published data (deltaEOA = -0.15 +/- 0.49 cm2/year; deltaPPG = +6.67 +/- 24.76 mmHg/year), with wide variation, and poor correlation between surveillance interval and disease progression. Progression of mild AS was significantly faster than severe AS (deltaEOA = -0.33 +/- 0.53 versus +0.04 +/- 0.41 cm2/year, respectively; p < 0.001). Of 169 echocardiograms evaluated, 60.9% were appropriately timed, 33.1% were early, and 6.0% were late. Surveillance of mild AS was less often appropriate than that of moderate or severe AS (12.0% versus 78.3% versus 84.7% appropriate, respectively; p < 0.001). On extrapolating these results nationally, an excess expenditure of pound 4.6 million (US$ 6.0 million) per year was estimated for this indication alone. CONCLUSION Echocardiographic surveillance of asymptomatic AS is often non-compliant with published guidance, which may be attributable to ambiguities and conflicts between different guidelines. The variable natural history of AS necessitates systematic surveillance at all stages of the disease spectrum, which in turn requires unambiguous, standardized guidelines to minimize variation in quality of care, while providing a clear framework to maximize the impact of investigations.

Abstract
Various types of cancers (including gliomas, melanomas, and esophageal, pancreas and non-small-cell lung cancers) display intrinsic resistance to pro-apoptotic stimuli, such as conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and/or the activation of a multidrug resistance phenotype, which are major barriers to effective treatment and lead to poor patient prognosis. The DYRK1A kinase is directly implicated in the resistance of cancer cells to pro-apoptotic stimuli and drives several pathways that enhance proliferation, migration, and the reduction of cell death, leading to very aggressive biological behavior in cancer cell populations. The DYRK1A kinase is also implicated in neurological diseases and in neoangiogenic processes. Thus, the DYRK1A kinase is of great interest for both cancer and neuroscience research. During the last decade, numerous compounds that inhibit DYRK1A have been synthesized. The present review discusses the available molecules known to interfere with DYRK1A activity and the implications of DYRK1A in cancer and other diseases and serves as a rational analysis for researchers who aim to improve the anti-DYRK1A activity of currently available compounds.

Abstract
This study reveals that AedesCAPA-PVK-1 (GPTVGLFAFPRV-NH(2)) inhibits basal and serotonin stimulated fluid secretion in the Malpighian tubules of larval Aedes aegypti at femtomolar concentrations. Conversely 10(-4)moll(-1) of the peptide stimulated fluid secretion rates. The diuretic effects of 10(-4)moll(-1)AedesCAPA-PVK-1 and antidiuretic effects of 10(-15)moll(-1)AedesCAPA-PVK-1 were abolished by protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase G (PKG) inhibition, respectively. Similar to the peptide, 10(-3)moll(-1) cGMP stimulated fluid secretion but doses in the micromolar to nanomolar range inhibited fluid secretion of the Malpighian tubules. Stimulatory effects of cGMP were abolished by PKA inhibition and inhibitory effects of cGMP were abolished by PKG inhibition. Furthermore, the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor l-NAME attenuated the inhibitory effects of AedesCAPA-PVK-1 but did not affect inhibition by cGMP. Based on the results we propose that AedesCAPA-PVK-1 inhibits fluid secretion rates of larval Malpighian tubules via the NOS/cGMP/PKG pathway and that high doses of the peptide lead to diuresis through the cGMP mediated activation of PKA.

Abstract
Holographic measurements on magnetised thin-film cobalt rings have demonstrated both onion and vortex states of magnetisation. For a ring in the vortex state, the difference between phases of electron paths that pass through the ring and those that travel outside it was found to agree very well with Aharonov-Bohm theory within measurement error. Thus the magnetic flux in thin-film rings of ferromagnetic material can provide the phase shift required for phase plates in transmission electron microscopy. When a ring of this type is used as a phase plate, scattered electrons will be intercepted over a radial range similar to the ring width. A cobalt ring of thickness 20 nm can produce a phase difference of π/2 from a width of just under 30 nm, suggesting that the range of radial interception for this type of phase plate can be correspondingly small.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study aimed to identify some histoanatomical features, to evaluate the polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity of cembran pine female cones. MATERIAL AND METHODS The cross sections, obtained by usual techniques, were examined using a Novex microscope with a Canon A95 digital camera. For chemical and antioxidant assays dried cones were extracted with 80% aqueous methanol. The total phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins in cone extract were quantified by spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activity was investigated using different in vitro assays: ABTS radical cation scavenging assay, reducing power assay and ferrous ion chelating ability assay. RESULTS The histo-anatomical study of the seed-bearing scale revealed many secretory channels. The cone extract had low contents of total phenolics (48.03 +/- 0.10 mg/g), flavonoids (8.11 +/- 0.27 mg/g) and proanthocyanidins (1.63 +/- 0.03 mg/g). The extract scavenged ABTS radical cation and reduced ferric ions to ferrous ions with EC50 values of 64.6 +/- 0.8 and 118.60 +/- 1.89 microg/ml, respectively being less active than the positive control, quercetin (EC50 = 1.16 +/- 0.05 and 2.58 +/- 0.00 microg/ml, respectively). In ferrous ion chelating ability assay the extract showed a good activity (EC50 = 1.2 +/- 0.0 mg/ml) while quercetin was inactive. CONCLUSIONS The ability of cone extract to chelate ferrous ions encourages further studies for identification of bioactive constituents and evaluation of their protective effects against ferrous ion-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
We report an unusual case of calcification of mitral valve annulus imaged with multiple non-invasive modalities in a patient who suffered a transient ischaemic attack, probably from thrombus overlying the mitral annular calcification. Both this mode of presentation and the imaging features of the annular calcification were relatively unusual, and the images obtained are remarkably clear and diagnostic.

Abstract
Abstract. In the frame of the European project, entitled MULTI-ASSESS, specimens of structural metals, glass, stone and concrete materials were exposed to air pollution at a station, which was installed for this purpose on a building, located in the centre of Athens. The main purpose of this project was to determine the corrosion and soiling effects of air pollution on materials. A set of the specimens was exposed in a position that was sheltered from rain and partly from wind, and another set was exposed in unsheltered positions on the roof of the above said building. In addition, other specimens were exposed at different heights on the same building, in order to investigate for the first time the corrosion and soiling effects on various materials as a function of height. For the determination of these effects, chemical analysis of the specimens was performed and basic parameters as the weight change, the layer thickness and the optical properties were calculated. Finally, the results obtained are discussed and their plausible interpretation is attempted.

Abstract
The magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum sp. has been cultured and the properties of its endogenous magnetic nanoparticles characterized. Electron-microscopic analyses indicate that the endogenous magnetite nanoparticles in Magnetospirillum sp. are coated with a 3-4 nm thick transparent shell, forming a magnetosome. These magnetite nanoparticles had diameters of 50.9+/-13.3 nm, in good agreement with the diameter of 40.6+/-1.2 nm extracted from magnetometry. Each Magnetospirillum sp. bacterium contained chains of 5-25 magnetosomes. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry results indicate that the extrinsic superparamagnetic response of the bacterial solution at room temperature can be attributed to the reversal of the magnetization by physical rotation of the nanoparticles. The intrinsic blocking temperature of a sample of freeze-dried bacteria was estimated to be 282+/-13 K. A tunnelling magneto resistance sensor was used to detect the stray fields of endogenous magnetic nanoparticles in static and quasi-dynamic modes. Based on the tunnelling magneto resistance sensor results, the magnetic moment per bacterium was estimated to be approximately 2.6 x 10(-13) emu. The feasibility of this detection method either as a mass-coverage device or as part of an integrated microfluidic circuit for detection and sorting of magnetosome-containing cells was demonstrated.

Abstract
Permanent magnetic structures with controlled dimension and architecture (labyrinthine, hexagonal, or dispersed columnar) are formed in a partially miscible ferrofluid-nonferrofluid mixture under the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The origin of the permanent structures, which have characteristic lateral dimensions ranging from 1 to 10 μm, is the repartitioning of the ferrofluid carrier solvent into the nonferrofluid polymeric phase. This polymer-solvent phase separation under a magnetic field leads to departures from the expected final dimension of the magnetically stabilized ferrofluid droplet sizes.
