Abstract
Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) film exhibits the superlubricity phenomena as rubbed against dry sliding contacts. However, its antifriction stability strongly depends on the working environment. By composting with the fluid lubricant, the friction response and fundamental mechanisms governing the low-friction performance and instability of a-C:H remain unclear, while they are not accessible by experiment due to the complicated interfacial structure and the lack of advanced characterization technique in situ. Here, we addressed this puzzle with respect to the physicochemical interactions of a-C:H/oil/graphene nanocomposite interface at atomic scale. Results reveal that although the friction capacity and stability of system are highly sensitive to the hydrogenated degrees of mated a-C:H surfaces, the optimized H contents of mated a-C:H surfaces are suggested in order to reach the superlow friction or even superlubricity. Interfacial structure analysis indicates that the fundamental friction mechanism attributes to the hydrogenation-induced passivation of friction interface and squeezing effect to fluid lubricant. Most importantly, the opposite diffusion of fluid oil molecules to the sliding direction is observed, resulting in the transformation of the real friction interface from a-C:H/oil interface to oil/oil interface. These outcomes enable an effective manipulation of the superlow friction of carbon-based films and the development of customized solid-fluid lubrication systems for applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One metabolic equivalent (MET) is equal to resting oxygen consumption. The average value for one MET in humans is widely quoted as 3.5ml/kg/min. However this value was derived from a single male participant at the end of the nineteenth century and has become canonical. Several small studies have identified varied estimates of one MET from widely varying populations. The ability of a patient to complete 4 METS (or 14mls/kg/min) is considered an indicator of their fitness to proceed to surgery. AIMS The study aimed to define a typical value of one MET from a real-world patient population, as well as determine factors that influenced the value. METHODS A database of cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) tests was interrogated to find total of 1847 adult patients who had undergone CPET testing in the previous 10 years. From this database, estimates of oxygen consumption (VO2 ) at rest and at the anaerobic threshold and a number of other variables were obtained. The influence of age, body mass index (BMI), sex and the use of beta blockers was tested. RESULTS The median resting VO2 at rest was 3.6ml/kg/min (IQR 3.0-4.2). Neither sex nor age greater than 65 years nor the use of beta blockers produced a significant difference in resting VO2 , while those with a BMI greater than 25 had a significantly lower VO2 at rest (3.4ml/kg/min vs 4.0ml/kg/min, p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS The estimate of 3.6ml/kg/min for resting VO2 presented here is consistent with the previous literature, despite this being the first large study of its kind. Abstract
AIMS The adsorption behaviour and mechanisms of the surface modified activated carbon with bacteria was evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS 16S rRNA was employed to identify the hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The bacteria was characterized by TEM and electron microscope. The surface modified activated carbon with bacteria was characterized by SEM. The adsorption behaviour was tested by static adsorption and dynamic adsorption. CONCLUSION The adsorption efficiency of the modified activated carbon was high when pH was weak acidic, and the adsorption capacity increased with the increase of temperature ranging from 20 to 35°C. The adsorption capacity peaked at 234·6 mg g-1 at 25°C, which was sixfold higher than that of activated carbon. The pseudo-first-order kinetic can more accurately assess Congo red adsorption on the two adsorbents. The adsorption of Congo red by bacteria surface modified activated carbon fitted well with the Langmuir's model. The adsorption process was endothermic, and the biological floccules were formed during the adsorption. The physical adsorption is the main driving force. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results indicate that the bacteria surface-modified activated carbon can be used effectively as an adsorbent to eliminate Congo red from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
The expression of a gene encoding peroxisomal Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase from Saussurea involucrata Kar. et Kir. was induced by low temperature, PEG6000 treatment, and NaCl stress. To investigate the role of SikCuZnSOD3 in the mitigation of abiotic stress, we used Agrobacterium-mediated transformation to create transgenic cotton that overexpressed SikCuZnSOD3. Phenotypic analysis of T4 generation transgenic lines showed that they generally grew better than wild-type cotton under low temperature, PEG6000 treatment, and NaCl stress. Although there were no significant differences under control conditions, transgenic plants exhibited greater survival, fresh weight, and dry weight than wild-type plants under all three stress treatments. Additional physiological analyses demonstrated that the transgenic cotton had higher relative water content, proline and soluble sugar contents, and activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase), as well as lower relative conductivity, malondialdehyde content, and H2O2 and O2- accumulation. More importantly, overexpression of SikCuZnSOD3 increased the yield of cotton fiber. Our results confirm that the overexpression of SikCuZnSOD3 can improve the abiotic stress resistance of cotton by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes, maintaining ROS homeostasis, and reducing cell membrane damage. Abstract
BACKGROUND Saussurea involucrata survives in extreme arctic conditions and is very cold-resistant. This species grows in rocky, mountainous areas with elevations of 2400-4100 m, which are snow-covered year-round and are subject to freezing temperatures. S. involucrata's ability to survive in an extreme low-temperature environment suggests that it has particularly high photosynthetic efficiency, providing a magnificent model, and rich gene pool, for the analysis of plant cold stress response. Fructose-1, 6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA) is a key enzyme in the photosynthesis process and also mediates the conversion of fructose 1, 6-bisphosphate (FBP) into dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glycerol triphosphate (GAP) during glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. The molecular mechanisms underlying S. involucrata's cold tolerance are still unclear; therefore, our work aims to investigate the role of FBA in plant cold-stress response. RESULTS In this study, we identified a cold-responsive gene, SiFBA5, based on a preliminary low-temperature, genome-wide transcriptional profiling of S. involucrata. Expression analysis indicated that cold temperatures rapidly induced transcriptional expression of SiFBA5, suggesting that SiFBA5 participates in the initial stress response. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that SiFBA5 is localized to the chloroplast. Transgenic tomato plants that overexpressed SiFBA5 were generated using a CaMV 35S promoter. Phenotypic observation suggested that the transgenic plants displayed increased cold tolerance and photosynthetic efficiency in comparison with wild-type plants. CONCLUSION Cold stress has a detrimental impact on crop yield. Our results demonstrated that SiFBA5 positively regulates plant response to cold stress, which is of great significance for increasing crop yield under cold stress conditions.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical effects of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) gel in combination with vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) technology in repairing refractory wounds. Methods: From March 2011 to January 2015, 44 patients with refractory wounds meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited into VSD alone group, who were admitted to the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery of the Yidu Central Hospital of Weifang and received intermittent VSD treatment. From February 2015 to September 2019, 43 patients with refractory wounds meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited into PRP+ VSD group, who were admitted to the same unit as above-mentioned and received PRP combined with intermittent VSD treatment. The retrospective cohort study was conducted. There were 24 males and 20 females with age of (37.5±2.2) years in VSD alone group, and there were 25 males and 18 females with age of (37.0±2.5) years in PRP+ VSD group. The wound exudate of patients in the two groups before and 7 and 14 d after the first treatment were collected for bacterial culture, and the positive rate of bacterial culture was calculated. The wound healing of patients in the two groups was observed on 7, 14, and 21 d after the first treatment, and the wound healing rate was calculated. The complete wound healing time of patients in the two groups was recorded. The degree of wound pain of patients in the two groups was evaluated by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before and 14 d after the first treatment. The scar hyperplasia of patients in the two groups was evaluated by the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) in 1 and 2 months after the wound healed completely. The occurrence of adverse reactions of patients in the two groups during the whole period of treatment was observed and the incidence of adverse reactions was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance for repeated measurement, chi-square test, paired t test, and Bonferroni correction. Results: The positive rates of bacterial culture in wound exudate of patients in PRP+ VSD on 7 and 14 d after the first treatment were 37.2% (16/43) and 11.6% (5/43), which were significantly lower than 56.8% (25/44) and 29.5% (13/44) in VSD alone group, χ(2)=4.212, 4.255, P<0.05. The wound healing rates of patients in PRP+ VSD group on 7 and 14, and 21 d after the first treatment were respectively (58±14)%, (70±13)%, (89±12)%, which were significantly higher than (41±11)%, (60±11)%, (74±12)% in VSD alone group, t=6.323, 3.820, 5.751, P<0.01. The complete wound healing time of patients in PRP+ VSD group was (30±6) d, which was significantly shorter than (61±8) d in VSD alone group, t=20.890, P<0.05. The VAS score of patients in PRP+ VSD group was significantly lower than that in VSD alone group on 14 d after the first treatment (t=13.904, P<0.01). The VSS score of patients in PRP+ VSD group was significantly lower than that in VSD alone group in 1 and 2 months after the wound healed completely (t=3.307, 3.637, P<0.01). The incidence of adverse reactions of patients in PRP+ VSD group during the whole period of treatment was 7.0% (3/43), which was significantly lower than 22.7% (10/44) in VSD alone group, χ(2)=4.245, P<0.05. Conclusions: Autologous PRP gel combined with VSD technology in repairing refractory wounds not only has good bacteriostatic effect, but also can increase wound healing rate, shorten wound healing time, alleviate wound pain, reduce scar hyperplasia, with less adverse reaction, which is worthy of promotion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the incidence and associated predictors of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) among pregnant women infected with syphilis. DESIGN Cox regression analysis. SETTING China. POPULATION OR SAMPLE Pregnant women who were tested for and diagnosed with syphilis during the index pregnancy and delivered at a gestational age ≥28 weeks between 2016 and 2019. METHODS Data were extracted from China's Information System of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Syphilis Management. Descriptive analysis provided profiles and pregnancy outcomes of maternal syphilis, as well as the incidence of APOs. Log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate factors influencing APOs in infected mothers with singleton births. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The incidence of APOs and the hazard ratios of associated predictors using Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS Syphilis treatment data were available from 83.86% of diagnosed women. Including deliveries from the total study population, 13.33% experienced APOs. Cox regression indicated that APOs were more likely in women tested and diagnosed in the late trimester, at delivery or postpartum. Women who accepted non-standardised treatment and who received standardised treatment had less risk of APOs. CONCLUSIONS China has made huge progress over the last decades in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis, but the incidence of APOs among pregnant women infected with syphilis remains high. It is essential to further strengthen access to early detection and standardised treatment of infected women to reduce the risk of APOs. Abstract
Usually, two-dimensional (2D) flexible strain sensors based on cracks have very high sensitivities but small measuring ranges, while the three-dimensional (3D) ones behave in the opposite way. Here, by utilizing the large residual compressive stress of an amorphous carbon (a-C) film and the flexibility of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), we developed a facile and economic strategy to fabricate a high-sensitive a-C/PDMS stretchable strain sensor. Results showed that for the first time, the a-C film ranging from 25 nm to 1 μm changed the shape and orientation of conductive scales, as well as made a one-step 2D-to-3D electrical junction transformation in integrated sensors. In particular, the sensor with a 1 μm thick a-C film exhibited the best comprehensive performance, displaying a maximum gauge factor of 746.7 and strain range up to 0.5. However, the linearity decreased slightly as the strain range went beyond 0.43. Additionally, the sensor showed a satisfactory repeatability for 5000 cycles, together with excellent time and temperature drift performances at zero position of 75 ppm full scale (FS) and 25 ppm FS·°C-1 in the range of -20 to 155 °C, respectively. The sensor has large potentials for wearable devices used in the monitoring of various human motions and physiological signals.

Abstract
We present the experimental end-station TRIXS dedicated to time-resolved soft x-ray resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on solid samples at the free-electron laser FLASH. Using monochromatized ultrashort femtosecond XUV/soft x-ray photon pulses in combination with a synchronized optical laser in a pump-probe scheme, the TRIXS setup allows measuring sub-picosecond time-resolved high-resolution RIXS spectra in the energy range from 35 eV to 210 eV, thus spanning the M-edge (M1 and M2,3) absorption resonances of 3d transition metals and N4,5-edges of rare earth elements. A Kirkpatrick-Baez refocusing mirror system at the first branch of the plane grating monochromator beamline (PG1) provides a focus of (6 × 6) μm2 (FWHM) at the sample. The RIXS spectrometer reaches an energy resolution of 35-160 meV over the entire spectral range. The optical laser system based on a chirped pulse optical parametric amplifier provides approximately 100 fs (FWHM) long photon pulses at the fundamental wavelength of 800 nm and a fluence of 120 mJ/cm2 at a sample for optical pump-XUV probe measurements. Furthermore, optical frequency conversion enables experiments at 400 nm or 267 nm with a fluence of 80 and 30 mJ/cm2, respectively. Some of the first (pump-probe) RIXS spectra measured with this setup are shown. The measured time resolution for time-resolved RIXS measurements has been characterized as 287 fs (FWHM) for the used energy resolution.

Abstract
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) is an important food plant that has been used as a model plant in genetic evolution and molecular biology research. The plant is originated from the tropics; thus, it is sensitive to cold. Its growth and development can be easily affected by cold stress. In this study, cold-regulated gene LeCOR413PM2 was cloned from tomato leaves and then used to generate two types of transgenic tomato plants: LeCOR413PM2-overexpressing transgenic plants and RNA-interference-expressing transgenic plants. The functions and expression of LeCOR413PM2 gene in response to cold stress were subsequently assessed. The results showed that LeCOR413PM2 localized in the plasma membrane. Expression of LeCOR413PM2 gene in the leaf of transgenic tomato plant was highest compared to that in other organs (i.e., root, stem, flower and fruit); it was elevated when plants were treated with cold stress. Overexpression of LeCOR413PM2 gene was found to not only reduce damage to cell membrane, accumulation of ROS, and photoinhibition of PSII, but also maintain high activity of antioxidant enzymes and content of osmotic regulators. The results also reveal that high activities of antioxidant enzymes were caused by the up-regulation of their gene expressions. This study demonstrates that the overexpression of LeCOR413PM2 could increase cold tolerance of transgenic tomato plants, while the suppressed expression of LeCOR413PM2 by RNA interference could increase the sensitivity of plants to cold.
