Polarizations of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:132001. Abstract
We have measured the polarizations of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons as functions of their transverse momentum p(T) when they are produced promptly in the rapidity range |y| < 0.6 with p(T) > or =5 GeV/c. The analysis is performed using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about 800 pb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector. For both vector mesons, we find that the polarizations become increasingly longitudinal as p(T) increases from 5 to 30 GeV/c. These results are compared to the predictions of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and other contemporary models. The effective polarizations of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons from B-hadron decays are also reported.

Search for heavy long-lived particles that decay to photons at CDF II. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:121801. Abstract
We present the first search for heavy, long-lived particles that decay to photons at a hadron collider. We use a sample of gamma + jet + missing transverse energy events in pp[over] collisions at square root[s] = 1.96 TeV taken with the CDF II detector. Candidate events are selected based on the arrival time of the photon at the detector. Using an integrated luminosity of 570 pb(-1) of collision data, we observe 2 events, consistent with the background estimate of 1.3+/-0.7 events. While our search strategy does not rely on model-specific dynamics, we set cross section limits in a supersymmetric model with [Formula: see text] and place the world-best 95% C.L. lower limit on the [Formula: see text] mass of 101 GeV/c(2) at [Formula: see text].

Abstract
We report the observation and measurement of the mass of the bottom, strange baryon Xi(b)- through the decay chain Xi(b)- -->J/psiXi-, where J/psi-->mu+mu-, Xi- -->Lambdapi-, and Lambda-->ppi-. A signal is observed whose probability of arising from a background fluctuation is 6.6 x 10(-15), or 7.7 Gaussian standard deviations. The Xi(b)- mass is measured to be 5792.9+/-2.5(stat) +/- 1.7(syst) MeV/c2.

Abstract
Changes and local distribution of oviductal progesterone (P(4)) concentration during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy in cows were investigated. Intact reproductive tracts were collected from 16 Holstein cows at an abattoir. Samples were classified in to 4 stages (follicular, postovulatory, luteal and early pregnant,< 20 d) based on visual observation of corpus luteum (CL), uterine characteristics and luteal P(4) concentrations. Oviducts were separated from the uterus at the utero-tubal junction and divided into 4 parts: fimbriae, proximal, medial and distal parts. Luteal tissue samples were also collected. Progesterone levels in oviductal and luteal tissues were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Comparatively higher (P < 0.001) P(4) levels were found in stages with a functioning CL ( luteal phase and early pregnancy) than in those with a regressing CL (follicular phase and post ovulation). The oviduct ipsilateral to the CL bearing ovary during the luteal phase and early pregnancy showed higher ( P < 0.001) P(4) concentrations than the contralateral side. Such a difference was not observed during the follicular phase or post ovulation. The ipsilateral oviduct to the functioning CL at early pregnancy showed higher (P <0.05) P(4) levels than at the luteal phase, while no significant difference in luteal P(4) levels between these 2 stages was observed. Neither were any differences in P(4) concentration within the oviduct observed during any phase of the estrous cycle or during early pregnancy. A positive relationship between luteal and oviductal P(4) concentrations was noted. In conclusion, changes in P(4) levels in the oviduct depend on the location and functional stage of the CL. Localized levels of P(4) in the oviduct may be due to local delivery of P(4) from the CL.

Abstract
We present a measurement of sigma(pp[over] --> W) x B(W --> e nu) at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV, using electrons identified in the forward region (1.2 < |eta| < 2.8) of the CDF II detector, in 223 pb(-1) of data. We measure sigma x B = 2796 +/- 13(stat)(-90)(+95)(syst) +/- 162(lum) pb. Combining this result with a previous CDF measurement obtained using electrons in the central region (|eta| approximately < 1), we present the first measurement of the ratio of central-electron to forward-electron W partial cross sections R(exp) = 0.925 +/- 0.006(stat) +/- 0.032(syst), consistent with theoretical predictions using Coordinated Theoretical-Experimental Project on QCD (CTEQ) and Martin-Roberts-Stirling-Thorne (MRST) parton distribution functions.

Interaction between body mass index and bone turnover during aromatase inhibition: Evidence from the letrozole (L), exemestane (E), and anastrozole (A) pharmacodynamics (LEAP) trial. Abstract
560 Background: High body mass index (BMI) protects against postmenopausal osteoporotic fracture, mediated in part by higher endogenous levels of oestradiol. Third-generation aromatase inhibitors (AIs) show superior efficacy and tolerability than tamoxifen in the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer. We examined the interactions between BMI and bone turnover during treatment with 3 aromatase inhibitors in the LEAP trial, an open, randomized, pharmacodynamic study in postmenopausal women. Methods: Healthy volunteers from the UK and Hungary with normal bone density and BMI between 18 and 34 kg/m2 were randomized to receive A (1 mg/day), L (2.5 mg/day), or E (25 mg/day) orally, once daily for 24 weeks. Effects on bone resorption (log transformed serum C-telopeptide crosslinks, CTX) and bone formation (bone alkaline phosphatase and propeptide of type I procollagen, PINP) were compared. Changes in biochemical markers of bone resorption and formation during treatment were all statistically inter- correlated (p<0.01) with no notable differences between the 3 agents studied, so that the groups were pooled for analysis. Spearman correlation coefficients and the p-values were computed. Results: A total of 90 participants were evaluable at baseline and at 24 weeks (29 A, 29 L, 32 E). As expected, baseline BMI correlated with pre-treatment circulating endogenous oestradiol (r=0.28, p=0.007) and both BMI and oestradiol negatively correlated with baseline serum CTX (r=-0.32, p=0.0025 and r=-0.35, p=0.0007 respectively) and PINP (r=-0.30, p=0.004 and r=-0.26, p=0.016 respectively). Baseline BMI and oestradiol were significantly correlated with the increase in serum CTX (r=0.26, p=0.015 and r=0.23, p=0.032 respectively) and BMI also correlated significantly with the increase in serum PINP (r=0.23, p=0.030). Conclusions: Steroidal and non-steroidal AIs increase bone turnover with the greatest increase in women with high BMI and higher oestradiol levels at baseline. As increased bone turnover is an independent risk factor for fracture, a high BMI may not confer a reduced fracture risk in the setting of AI use in early breast cancer. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
We measure the ratio of cross section times branching fraction, Rp=sigma chi c2 B(chi c2-->J/psi gamma)/sigma chi c1 B(chi c1-->J/psi gamma), in 1.1 fb(-1) of pp collisions at square root s=1.96 TeV. This measurement covers the kinematic range pT(J/psi)>4.0 GeV/c, |eta(J/psi)<1.0, and pT(gamma)>1.0 GeV/c. For events due to prompt processes, we find Rp=0.395+/-0.016(stat)+/-0.015(syst). This result represents a significant improvement in precision over previous measurements of prompt chi c1,2 hadro production.

Abstract
We describe a search for anomalous production of events with two leptons (e or mu) of the same electric charge in pp[over ] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Many extensions to the standard model predict the production of two leptons of the same electric charge. This search has a significant increase in sensitivity compared to earlier searches. Using a data sample corresponding to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector, we observe no significant excess in an inclusive selection (expect 33.2+/-4.7 events, observe 44) or in a supersymmetry-optimized selection (expect 7.8+/-1.1 events, observe 13.).

Short Communication: A Positive Relationship Between the First Ovulation Postpartum and the Increasing Ratio of Milk Yield in the First Part of Lactation in Dairy Cows. J Dairy Sci 2007; 90:2279-82. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between characteristics of the lactation curve, on the basis of daily milk yield, and ovulation within 3 wk postpartum as an indicator of early return to luteal activity in dairy cows. Lactation records from 46 lactating Holstein cows between calving and 305 d postpartum were studied. Milk samples were collected twice weekly between d 7 and 100 for later determination of progesterone concentrations. Occurrence of an early first ovulation was determined by an increase in milk progesterone by 3 wk after calving. Milk yield was recorded daily until 305 d postpartum, and average yield was calculated weekly. The lactation curve was characterized by 8 indices on the basis of the weekly average of milk yield as follows: a) first-week milk yield; b) peak milk yield; c) actual 305-d milk yield; d) peak week; e) difference in milk yield between the first week and peak week; f) difference in milk yield between the peak week and last week (43rd week postpartum); g) ratio of increase in milk yield between wk 1 and the week of peak yield; and h) ratio of decline in milk yield between the week of peak yield and the last week. Indices g and h were calculated as linear. The number of cows having ovulated by 3 wk postpartum was 22 (47.8%). The resumption of ovarian cycles with normal luteal phases occurred earlier in ovular cows than in anovular cows (32.0 d vs. 57.1 d). Although total milk yield did not differ between ovular and anovular cows, the ratio of increase in milk yield from the first week to the peak week (index g) in ovular cows was smaller compared with that of anovular cows (1.71 vs. 2.54). In addition, the ratio of increase in milk yield from the first week to the third week postpartum was greater in anovular cows by 3 wk postpartum (ovular = 1.43 +/- 0.23 vs. anovular = 2.32 +/- 0.29). In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that a greater increasing ratio of milk yield during early lactation may delay resumption of ovarian cycles after parturition. Therefore, this study is the first to demonstrate statistically that a smaller increasing ratio of milk yield (index g) during early lactation may have a beneficial effect on the first ovulation by 3 wk postpartum.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the associated production of a W boson and a Z boson. This result is based on 1.1 fb;-1 of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe 16 WZ candidates passing our event selection with an expected background of 2.7+/-0.4 events. A fit to the missing transverse energy distribution indicates an excess of events compared to the background expectation corresponding to a significance equivalent to 6 standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(pp-->WZ)=5.0(-1.6)(+1.8) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the top-quark mass Mtop in the all-hadronic decay channel tt-->W+bW-b-->q1q2bq3q4b. The analysis is performed using 310 pb-1 of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV pp[over ] collisions collected with the CDF II detector using a multijet trigger. The mass measurement is based on an event-by-event likelihood which depends on both the sample purity and the value of the top-quark mass, using 90 possible jet-to-parton assignments in the six-jet final state. The joint likelihood of 290 selected events yields a value of Mtop=177.1+/-4.9(stat)+/-4.7(syst) GeV/c2.

Abstract
Ovarian follicular vasculature is involved in follicular development and ovulation. Angiopoietin (ANPT)-Tie system is important for vascularization of the tissue surrounding the developing follicles and corpus luteum (CL). To determine how the expression of ANPT-1, ANPT-2 and their receptors in the follicles would be associated with the ovulatory process, the present study was conducted to examine mRNA expressions of ANPT-1, ANPT-2 and their receptors during the periovulatory phase in gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-treated cows. The ovaries were collected by transvaginal ovariectomy (n = 5, cows/group) and the follicles (n = 5, one follicle/cow) were classified into following groups: before GnRH administration [before luteinizing hormone (LH) surge]; 3-5 h after GnRH (during LH surge); 10 h after GnRH; 20 h after GnRH; 25 h after GnRH (peri-ovulation); and early CL (days 2-3). The mRNA expression was analysed by quantitative real-time PCR (rotor-gene 3000). Angiopoietin-1 expression rapidly decreased at 3-5 h and kept low level at 10 h after GnRH treatment compared with that before GnRH, and returned to the level before LH surge in the follicles >20 h after GnRH treatment. The levels of ANPT-2 mRNA decreased at 10 and 25 h after treatment compared with other periods. The ratio of ANPT-2/ANPT-1 (an index for destabilization of blood vessels) increased in the follicles at 3-5 h after GnRH treatment only. Both of Tie-1 and Tie-2 receptor expressions decreased in the follicles at 25 h after GnRH treatment. The results of the present study indicated that mRNA expressions of ANPT-1, ANPT-2 and their receptors changed in the bovine follicles during periovulatory period. These results suggest that angiopoietin-Tie system is associated with the initiation of vasculature of follicle that grows towards ovulation.

Abstract
We report a search for the anomalous production of events with multiple charged leptons in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 346 pb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The search is divided into three-lepton and four-or-more-lepton data samples. We observe six events in the three-lepton sample and zero events in the > or =4-lepton sample. Both numbers of events are consistent with standard model background expectations. Within the framework of an R-parity-violating supergravity model, the results are interpreted as mass limits on the lightest neutralino (chi[over](1)(0)) and chargino (chi[over](1+/-) particles. For one particular choice of model parameters, the limits are M(chi[over](1)(0)>110 GeV/c2 and M(chi[over](1+/-)>203 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level; the variation of these mass limits with model parameters is presented.

Abstract
We present an analysis of angular distributions and correlations of the X(3872) particle in the exclusive decay mode X(3872)-->J/psipi+ pi- with J/psi-->mu+ mu-. We use 780 pb-1 of data from pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We derive constraints on spin, parity, and charge conjugation parity of the X(3872) particle by comparing measured angular distributions of the decay products with predictions for different J(PC) hypotheses. The assignments J(PC)=1++ and 2-+ are the only ones consistent with the data.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the Lambda b0 lifetime in the exclusive decay Lambda b0-->J/psi Lambda 0 in pp collisions at square root s=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using fully reconstructed decays, we measure tau(Lambda b0)=1.593(-0.078)(+0.083)(stat)+/-0.033(syst) ps. This is the single most precise measurement of tau(Lambda b0) and is 3.2sigma higher than the current world average.

Abstract
We present the first observation of the baryon decay Lambda b0-->Lambda c+pi- followed by Lambda c+-->pK-pi+ in 106 pb-1 pp collisions at square root s=1.96 TeV in the CDF experiment. In order to reduce systematic error, the measured rate for Lambda b0 decay is normalized to the kinematically similar meson decay B0-->D+pi- followed by D+-->pi+K-pi+. We report the ratio of production cross sections (sigma) times the ratio of branching fractions (B) for the momentum region integrated above pT>6 GeV/c and pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.3: sigma(pp-->Lambda b0X)/sigma(pp-->B0X)xB(Lambda b0-->Lambda c+pi-)/B(B0-->D+pi-)=0.82+/-0.08(stat)+/-0.11(syst)+/-0.22[B(Lambda c+-->pK-pi+)].

Observation of exclusive electron-positron production in hadron-hadron collisions. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 98:112001. Abstract
We present the first observation of exclusive e(+)e(-) production in hadron-hadron collisions, using pp[over] collision data at (square root) s = 1.96 TeV taken by the run II Collider Detector at Fermilab, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 532 pb(-1). We require the absence of any particle signatures in the detector except for an electron and a positron candidate, each with transverse energy E(T) > 5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 2. With these criteria, 16 events are observed compared to a background expectation of 1.9+/-0.3 events. These events are consistent in cross section and properties with the QED process pp[over] --> p + e(+)e(-) + p[over] through two-photon exchange. The measured cross section is 1.6(-0.3)(+0.5)(stat) +/- 0.3(syst) pb. This agrees with the theoretical prediction of 1.71+/-0.01 pb.

Search for V+A current in top-quark decays in pp collisions at sqrts=1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 98:072001. Abstract
We report an upper limit on the fraction of V+A current, fV+A, in top-quark decays, using approximately 700 pb-1 of pp[over ] collisions at sqrts=1.96 TeV acquired by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. For the decay t-->Wb-->lnub (where l=e or micro), the invariant mass of the charged lepton and the bottom quark jet is sensitive to the polarization of the W boson. We determine fV+A=-0.06+/-0.25 given a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c2. We set an upper limit on fV+A of 0.29 at the 95% confidence level, an improvement by a factor of 2 on the previous best direct limit.

Abstract
Using 355 pb;{-1} of data collected by the CDF II detector in pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, we study the fully reconstructed hadronic decays B_{(s)};{0}-->D_{(s)};{-}pi;{+} and B_{(s)};{0}-->D_{(s)};{-}pi;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-}. We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B_{s};{0}-->D_{s};{-}pi;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-})/B(B;{0}-->D;{-}pi;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-})=1.05+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.22(syst). We also update our measurement of B(B_{s};{0}-->D_{s};{-}pi;{+})/B(B;{0}-->D;{-}pi;{+}) to 1.13+/-0.08(stat)+/-0.23(syst), improving the statistical uncertainty by more than a factor of 2. We find B(B_{s};{0}-->D_{s};{-}pi;{+})=[3.8+/-0.3(stat)+/-1.3(syst)]x10;{-3} and B(B_{s};{0}-->D_{s};{-}pi;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-})=[8.4+/-0.8(stat)+/-3.2(syst)]x10;{-3}.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) system that is exerted mainly through the type 1 IGF receptor (IGFR-1) and releasing of free IGF-I is regulated by the proteases of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), an important factor in follicle development of bovine ovary. The aims of the present study were to examine the mRNA expressions of IGF-I, IGFR-1 and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) in granulosa cells and theca tissues during bovine follicular development and the effects of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol (E2) on the expression of these genes in cultured bovine granulosa cells. Follicles were classified into four groups such as small follicle (SF), estrogen inactive dominant follicle (EID), estrogen active dominant follicle (EAD) and preovulatory follicle (POF). The concentration of free IGF-I in follicular fluid of POF was significantly higher than those in EID, whereas the total IGF-I in follicular fluid did not change at all developmental stages. The expression of IGF-I mRNA was not detected in the granulosa cells at all at any developmental stages but the expression was detected in the theca tissues. The amount of IGFR-1 mRNA in granulosa cell showed the constant level at all developmental stages except EID. The expressions of IGFR-1 and PAPP-A in cultured bovine granulosa cells were stimulated with FSH but not with E2. The PAPP-A mRNA expression was stimulated by FSH in presence of 1 ng/ml E2. These results indicate that IGF-I in follicular fluid is mainly derived from the circulation and that FSH is an inducer for the expression of IGFR-1 and PAPP-A genes in granulosa cells. Therefore, we suggest that PAPP-A stimulated with FSH play a crucial role for IGF-I system in bovine follicular development.

Abstract
Placental estrogens are associated with fetal growth and development, and play important roles in the initiation of the parturition process. In the delivery of somatic cell-cloned (SC) calves, recipient cows show a weak and unclear symptom of parturition, although large offspring syndrome (LOS) frequently occurs. The mortality of calves by dystocia decreases the efficiency of SC cattle production. In this study, we examined peripheral estrone (E1), estradiol-17 (E2), estrone sulfate (E1S), and progesterone (P4) levels during preparturition in recipients of SC and in vivo calves. Recipients were administered 20 mg dexamethasone (DEX) at Days 276-288 of pregnancy, followed by 0.75-1 mg cloprostenol (PG) and 20 mg estriol 24 h later. Calves (Japanese black cattle) were delivered 2 or 3 days after the DEX administration. SC calves were delivered by cesarean section (C-sec) when LOS was suspected by rectal palpation. Blood samples of recipients [vaginal delivery of SC (Vag): n = 13; C-sec of SC: n = 8; vaginal delivery of in vivo calves (Control): n = 4] were taken at Days 257 and 271 of pregnancy, and just before DEX (-2P), PG (-1P), and parturition (0P). Blood samples of calves were taken just after delivery to analyze cortisol level. The statistical significance was analyzed by the Steel-Dwass test. Birth weight of calves was the heaviest (P < 0.05) in C-sec (62 3 kg; n = 12); Vag calves (43 2 kg; n = 19) were also heavier (P < 0.05) than Control calves (29 2 kg; n = 9). E1 levels in Control calves remained low (<629 111 pg mL-1) until Day 271 and then increased progressively (>2156 599 pg mL-1). E1 levels tended to be lower in Vag (<1968 299 pg mL-1) and C-sec (<1268 385 pg mL-1) calves at -2P, -1P, and 0P; E1 levels in C-sec calves were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than in Control calves at -2P (512 85 pg/mL-1) and -1P (725 91 pg mL-1). The E2 level in Control calves increased and reached a plateau at -2P. Vag and C-sec calves showed lower E2 levels, except that the Vag level at 0P was similar to that in Control calves. The E2 level of C-sec calves (61.8 25.3 pg mL-1) at 0P was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that of Control calves (247.5 102.8 pg mL-1). E1S levels in Vag and C-sec calves increased progressively from -2P to 0P, whereas the E1S level in Control calves increased at 0P. The E1S level in Vag calves (41.1 4.1 ng mL-1) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in Control calves (19.4 5.1 ng mL-1) at -1P. P4 levels decreased from -2P in Vag and Control calves, and from -1P in C-sec calves. The cortisol level in C-sec calves (60.1 19.1 ng mL-1) tended to be low compared with that in Vag (104.4 23.1 ng mL-1) and Control (93.4 15.0 ng mL-1) calves. This study revealed fetoplacental dysfunction of estrogen synthesis in the SC fetus during preparturition. Elevated E1S levels in recipients of the SC fetus, which correlated with high birth weight and agreed with previous reports for normal or plural pregnancy, might cause the reduction of E1 level. The comparable level of cortisol in Vag and Control calves indicated that SC calves had normal adrenal cortex function. Further analysis on placental estrogen synthesis and cortisol secretion in the SC fetus is necessary to clarify the cause of the prolonged gestation.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that IGF-1 is a crucial factor for ovarian follicular development in mammals. In postpartum (pp) dairy cows, plasma IGF-1 and estradiol (E2) levels in ovulatory cows at the first follicular wave pp are higher than in anovulatory cows. However, the plasma IGF-1 profile in an ovulatory or anovulatory dominant follicle (DF), which have different E2 production, at the first follicular wave pp have not yet been elucidated. Thus, we investigated the changing profile of plasma IGF-1 levels during first follicular wave pp. In 22 multiparous Holstein cows, blood samples were obtained 2 times/week from 4 weeks prepartum to 3 weeks pp, and the first follicular wave was monitored by ultrasound 2 times/week from 7 days pp to ovulatory phase. Detailed IGF-1 profiles in blood were determined during DF growth and maturation 4 times/day from 10 days pp to 7 days after the first ovulation in 5 ovulatory cows and to 20 days pp in 4 anovulatory cows; the data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, and Student's t-test. There was no interaction between groups and time within the prepartum or the pp period. The ovulatory cows (n = 13/22) with an estrogen-active dominant (EAD: high plasma E2 level with peak) follicle showed higher IGF-1 levels than anovulatory cows (n = 9/22) with an estrogen-inactive dominant (EID: low plasma E2 level without peak) follicle during the prepartum (117 8 vs. 91 5 ng mL-1; P < 0.05) and the pp (91 4 vs. 64 4 ng mL-1; P < 0.001) period. Especially noteworthy, during the first follicular wave pp in ovulatory cows, the plasma IGF-1 levels were maintained at a high level until E2 levels increased, followed by an LH surge. We observed that the EAD follicle in ovulatory cows ovulated. To further examine the IGF-1 system in the intra-follicular environment, we used the EAD and EID follicles from ovaries of dairy cows obtained at a slaughterhouse. The EAD and EID follicles were classified on the basis of follicle diameter and E2 concentrations in follicular fluid (FF). The significant differences of factors between EAD and EID were analyzed by Student's t-test. The expression of IGF-1 mRNA was not detected in follicular cells in either EAD and EID, suggesting that IGF-1 in FF is mainly derived from liver. The free IGF-1 levels in FF in EAD (4.8 0.5 ng mL-1) were higher than those in EID (2.7 0.1 ng mL-1; P < 0.05). In addition, the expression of type 1 IGF receptor (IGFR-1) mRNA in EAD was higher than hat in EID (P < 0.0001). From the results of the present study, it is apparent that the EAD follicle during the first follicular wave pp in ovulatory cows sufficiently expressed IGFR-1, and a liver-derived IGF-1 stimulates E2 production in the follicle to ovulate. In conclusion, our data suggest that a high concentration of IGF-1, secreted from the liver, during the peripartum period may be one of important factors for the appearance of an ovulatory follicle during the first follicular wave pp cows.

Abstract
Successful bovine embryo transfer requires synchronization of luteolysis, estrus and ovulation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a combination of a PRID, PGF2 and eCG, on estrus synchronization and pregnancy rate in recipient heifers. A PRID (ASKA Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) was inserted into the vagina at random days of the estrous cycle for 7 (n = 35) or 9 (n = 43) days. Two days before removal of the PRID, the heifers were injected with PGF2 IM (2 mL Resipron-C containing 0.25 mg mL-1 cloprostenol; ASKA). About half of the heifers in each group received 250 IU eCG IM (Serotropin; ASKA) at the time of PRID removal. Blood was collected several times from the start of treatment for 7 (n = 9) or 9 (n = 9) days and on the day of embryo transfer by jugular venipuncture; plasma was immediately separated and stored at -20C until assayed for plasma concentrations of estradiol-17α (E2) and progesterone (P4). The E2 and P4 determinations were performed by enzyme immunoassay after extraction by diethyl ether. Pregnancy was determined by ultrasonography on Day 30 (Day 0 = estrus). The rates of successful standing estrus (no. in estrus/PRID inserted), embryo transfer (no. transferred/estrus), and pregnancy (no. pregnancy/transferred) were compared between groups. Data were analyzed by chi-square analysis or Fisher's PLSD test following ANOVA. Injection of eCG at the time of PRID removal had no significant effect on the rates of successful standing estrus, embryo transfer, or pregnancy (P > 0.05). The proportion of heifers treated for 9 days that exhibited standing estrus (93%, 40/43) was significantly higher than the proportion of heifers treated for 7 days that exhibited standing estrus (66%, 23/35, P < 0.01). Of the heifers that were treated for 9 days, the proportion of heifers exhibiting standing estrus within 2 days after the end of treatment was significantly higher (93%, 37/40) than for heifers that were treated for 7 days (65%, 15/23; P < 0.01). Pregnancy rates of heifers treated for 9 days (84%, 32/38) and 7 days (81%, 17/21) were not significantly different. The E2 : P4 ratio normally increases during follicle growth and CL regression. The plasma E2 : P4 ratio between the time of injection of PGF2α and the time of PRID removal was significantly higher for heifers that were treated for 9 days than it was for heifers that were treated for 7 days (P < 0.01). These results suggest that a combination of PRID treatment for 9 days and injection of PGF2α 2 days before PRID removal successfully synchronized estrus in recipient heifers and led to high pregnancy rates following embryo transfer.

Abstract
The relationship between the mRNA expression of proteolytic and steroidogenic enzymes in bovine placentomes was examined. Caruncle and cotyledon tissues were collected every 6 hr after spontaneous parturition until the fetal membranes were released. Based on the time of fetal membrane release after parturition, the specimens were classified as follows: (1) the early group, in which the fetal membranes were released within 6 hr after parturition; and (2) the late group, in which the fetal membranes were released 6-12 hr after parturition. The placentomes from a slaughterhouse were additionally collected as samples for the examination of enzymes during the gestation period. The mRNA expression of steroidogenic enzymes in the cotyledon was observed to be higher than that in caruncle tissues; however, the mRNA expression patterns of P450scc and StAR tended to be similar in both placental tissues. On the other hand, although the expression levels of TIMP-2 mRNA in both caruncle and cotyledon tissues were similar, during gestation and postpartum the expression levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 mRNA were approximately 10 times higher in caruncle than in cotyledon tissue. Marked contrasting changes in mRNA expression patterns between pre- and postpartum periods were observed for MMP-2 and MMP-9 in caruncle tissues and for MMP-9 and TIMP-2 in cotyledon tissues. The present study provides the first evidence that MMP-2, MMP-9, and TIMP-2 mRNAs are expressed in bovine placentomes during the gestational and postpartum periods and suggests that these enzymes, in conjunction with steroidogenic enzymes, mediate fetal membrane detachment after parturition.
