Abstract
Bacteriocins are peptides produced by various species of bacteria, especially lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which have a large spectrum of action against spoilage bacteria and foodborne pathogens. However, when not entirely characterized, they are alternatively called bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS). Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 43200 grew and produced BLIS optimally when cultivated anaerobically in bioreactor for 24 h at 30 °C and 200 rpm in De Man, Rogosa and Sharp (MRS) medium supplemented with 1.5% peptone. Under such optimal conditions, the cell mass concentration (3.41 g/L) was 66% higher, the generation time (1.28 h) 38% shorter and the BLIS activity against different indicator strains significantly higher than in MRS medium without any supplement taken as a control, and the exponential phase started 4 h before. The agar diffusion method showed BLIS inhibition halos against LAB strains with diameter in the range 11.0-19.5 mm and specific areas between 377.1 and 2654.6 mm2/mL, while BLIS activity against Listeria strains was better quantified by the liquid medium assay that showed, for the fermented broth without any dilution, 100 and 50% inhibition of Listeria innocua and Listeria seeligeri growth, respectively. These results highlight the potential of P. pentosaceus BLIS as a natural antimicrobial for application in the food industry.

Abstract
The bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract of the fungus Cochliobolus sp. highlighted leishmanicidal activity and allowed for anhydrocochlioquinone A (ANDC-A) isolation. MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra of this compound were in agreement with those published in the literature. ANDC-A exhibited leishmanicidal activity with EC 50 value of 22.4 microgram/mL (44 mu M) and, when submitted to the microdilution assay against Gram-ositive and Gram-negative bacteria, showed a minimal inhibitory concentration against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25295 of 128 microgram/mL (248.7 mu M). It was also active against five human cancer cell lines, showing IC50 values from 5.4 to 20.3 mu M. ANDC-A demonstrated a differential selectivity for HL-60 (SI 5.5) and THP-1 (SI 4.3) cell lines in comparison with Vero cells and was more selective than cisplatin and doxorubicin against MCF-7 cell line in comparison with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. ANDC-A was able to eradicate clonogenic tumour cells at concentrations of 20 and 50 mu M and induced apoptosis in all tumour cell lines at 20 mu M. These results suggest that ANDC-A might be used as a biochemical tool in the study of tumour cells biochemistry as well as an anticancer agent with durable effects on tumours.

Abstract
β-Lactamase inhibitors have emerged as an effective alternative to reduce the effects of resistance against β-lactam antibiotics. The Streptomyces genus is known for being an exceptional natural source of antimicrobials and β-lactamase inhibitors such as clavulanic acid, which is largely applied in clinical practice. To protect against the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, new antibiotics and β-lactamase inhibitors need to be discovered and developed. This review will cover an update about the main β-lactamase inhibitors producers belonging to the Streptomyces genus; advanced methods, such as genetic and metabolic engineering, to enhance inhibitor production compared with wild-type strains; and fermentation and purification processes. Moreover, clinical practice and commercial issues are discussed. The commitment of companies and governments to develop innovative strategies and methods to improve the access to new, efficient, and potentially cost-effective microbial products to combat the antimicrobial resistance is also highlighted.

Abstract
Sucrose and inulin, when combined with glucose, behaved as stimulating agents of bacteriocin production by Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 43200. When such microbial strain was grown in glucose-based Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) medium, without any additional supplement, it showed higher maximum cell concentration (2.68 ± 1.10 g/L) and longer generation time (2.17 ± 0.02 h), but lower specific growth rate (0.32 ± 0.01 h-1) than in the same medium supplemented with 1.0% of both ingredients (2.53 ± 1.10 g/L, 1.60 ± 0.05 h and 0.43 ± 0.02 h-1, respectively). Glucose replacement by sucrose or inulin almost completely suppressed growth, hence confirming that it is the preferred carbon source for this strain. Qualitatively, similar results were observed for lactate production, which was 59.8% higher in glucose-based medium. Enterococcus and Listeria strains were sensitive to bacteriocin, whose antimicrobial effect after 8 h increased from 120.25 ± 0.35 to 144.00 ± 1.41 or 171.00 ± 1.41 AU/mL when sucrose or inulin was added to the glucose-based MRS medium. Sucrose and inulin were also able to speed up P. pentosaceus growth in the exponential phase.

Abstract
Processing of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) beans responsible for agricultural exports leads to large amounts of solid waste that were discarded, however, this one presents high contents of metabolites with biological activities. The major objective of this study was to valorise cocoa agroindustrial residue obtained by hydraulic pressing for extract rich in antioxidants. For it, the centesimal composition of residue was investigated, the green extraction was carried out from the residue after, the bioactive compounds, sugar contents and screaming by HPTLC were quantified for extract. The extract has a total polyphenol content of 229.64 mg/g and high antioxidant activity according to ABTS 225.0 μM/g. HTPLC analysis confirmed the presence in the extract, residue of terpenes, sesquiterpenes, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. These results, as a whole, suggest that the extract from the cocoa residue has interesting characteristics to alternative crops with potential industrial uses.

Abstract
The cocoa extract (Theobroma cacao L.) has a significant amount of polyphenols (TP) with potent antioxidant activity (AA). This study aims to optimise microencapsulation of the extract of cocoa waste using chitosan and maltodextrin. Microencapsulation tests were performed according to a Box-Behnken factorial design, and the results were evaluated by response surface methodology with temperature, maltodextrin concentration (MD) and extract flowrate (EF) as independent variables, and the fraction of encapsulated TP, TP encapsulation yield, AA, yield of drying and solubility index as responses. The optimum conditions were: inlet temperature of 170 °C, MD of 5% and EF of 2.5 mL/min. HPLC analysis identified epicatechin as the major component of both the extract and microparticles. TP release was faster at pH 3.5 than in water. These results as a whole suggest that microencapsulation was successful and the final product can be used as a nutrient source for aquatic animal feed. Highlights Microencapsulation is optimised according to a factorial design of the Box-Behnken type. Epicatechin is the major component of both the extract and microcapsules. The release of polyphenols from microcapsules is faster at pH 3.5 than in water.

Abstract
In this work, the effects of agitation and aeration rates on aqueous two-phase system (ATPS)-based extractive fermentation of clavulanic acid (CA) by Streptomyces variabilis DAUFPE 3060 were investigated through a 22 full factorial design, where oxygen transfer rate (OTR) and oxygen uptake rate (OUR) were selected as the responses. Aeration rates significantly influenced cell growth, OUR, and CA yield, while OTR was practically the same in all the runs. Under the intermediate agitation (950 rpm) and aeration conditions (3.5 vvm) of the central point runs, it was achieved OTR of 1.617 ± 0.049 mmol L-1 h-1 , OUR of 0.132 ± 0.030 mmol L-1 h-1 , maximum CA production of 434 ± 4 mg L-1 , oxygen mass transfer coefficient of 33.40 ± 2.01 s-1 , partition coefficient of 66.5 ± 1.5, CA yield in the top and bottom phases of 75% ± 2% and 19% ± 1%, respectively, mass balance of 95% ± 4% and purification factor of 3.8 ± 0.1. These results not only confirmed the paramount role of O2 supply, broth composition and operational conditions in CA ATPS-extractive fermentation, but also demonstrated the possibility of effectively using this technology as a cheap tool to simultaneously produce and recover CA. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Abstract
Photobioreactor configuration, mode of operation and light intensity are known to strongly impact on cyanobacteria growth. To shed light on these issues, kinetic, bioenergetic and thermodynamic parameters of batch Arthrospira platensis cultures were estimated along the time at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 70μmolm(-2)s(-1) in different photobioreactors with different surface/volume ratio (S/V), namely open pond (0.25cm(-1)), shaken flask (0.48cm(-1)), horizontal photobioreactor (HoP) (1.94cm(-1)) and helicoidal photobioreactor (HeP) (3.88cm(-1)). Maximum biomass concentration and productivity remarkably increased with S/V up to 1.94cm(-1). HoP was shown to be the best-performing system throughout the whole runs, while HeP behaved better only at the start. Runs carried out in HoP increasing PPFD from 40 to 100μmolm(-2)s(-1) revealed a progressive enhancement of bioenergetics and thermodynamics likely because of favorable light distribution. HoP appeared to be a promising configuration to perform high-yield indoor cyanobacterial cultures.
