Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) of salivary glands, and its diagnosis, differential diagnosis, immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. Methods: Seventeen cases of MASC were enrolled, with 9 cases of salivary acinar cell carcinoma and 18 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma as control groups from Nanjing General Hospital from 1997 to 2014 were included in this retrospective study, combined with immunohistochemistry and molecular detection of ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. All cases were histologically reviewed with immunohistochemical staining (EnVision) for S-100 protein, SOX10, GATA3, CD117 expression in each group. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to detect the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. Results: The age of MASC patients ranged from 27 to 74 years with mean age of 47 and ratio of male and female was 4∶3. All cases showed infiltrative growth and diverse cytology and histology, including lobular (8 cases), cystic papillary (3 cases), cribriform mixed with papillary and glandular structures (6 cases) at various proportions. Some tumors of MASC also exhibited solid growth areas with occasional microcystic honeycombed pattern composed of small cysts merged into larger cysts resembling thyroid follicles. S-100 protein and SOX10 were strongly positive in all MASC cases (17/17). In addition, there was insignificant positivity for GATA3 (3/17) and CD117 (4/17). ETV6 gene fusion detection was informative in 12 MASC cases by FISH with 10 positive cases and 2 negative cases. Conclusions: Combined immunohistochemical positivity of S-100 protein, CD117 and SOX10 are useful in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of MASC. FISH detection of ETV6-NTRK3 fusion offers an additional molecular diagnostic marker for the diagnosis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the the expression of subchondral bone of Indian hedgehog(Ihh) with early experimental osteoarthritis induced by mechanical stress. Methods: The animals were equally divided into two groups: experimental group(E-group, n=15) and control group(S-group, n=15). The right knee joints of E-group underwent surgery, which involved in both medial collateral ligament (MCL) transaction and medial meniscectomy, while the control group was only carried out with a sham operation. The rats were killed at 1, 2 and 4 weeks postsurgery to obtain the right knee joints. Immunostaining and immunofluorescence double staining were performed to evaluate the expression of Ihh in subchondral bone, respectively. Results: The polynuclear giant cells in the subchondral bone of E-Group expressed Ihh in their cytoplasm 1 and 2 weeks post-surgery, except for 4 week, while those of S-Group appeared negative at all three time points postsurgery. There is statistically difference between the mean density of positive area of Ihh in sections of E-group and S-group both in 1 week (E-group: 0.351+ 0.086, S-group: 0.153±0.017, P<0.05) and 2 weeks (E-group: 0.303±0.026, S-group: 0.176±0.013, P<0.05), but without statistically difference in 4 weeks (E-group: 0.092±0.033, S-group: 0.136±0.014, P>0.05) post surgery. Trap positive giant cells in subchondral bone of E-group were also found Ihh positive, which indicated expression of Ihh in osteoclast . Conclusion: Ihh maybe play an important role in pathogenesis of early experimental osteoarthritis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Rapid, sensitive and specific isothermal nucleic acid amplification methods of Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) have been developed based on cross-priming amplification (CPA). The amplicon of CPA can be detected by a disposable amplicon cross-contamination proof device. The whole assay takes 1-1·5 h from amplification to read out. Ten fold serial dilutions of quantified plasmids were used to test the CPA assay sensitivities, with the detection limits of 45 copies per reaction and 65 copies per reaction for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae respectively. The specificities of CPA assays for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae were tested by using total DNA extracted from nine other bacterial strains, and no cross-reactivity was detected. Eighty clinical cervical or vaginal swab specimens were tested by both CPA and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the consistencies of 98·75% (79/80) and 97·5% (78/80) for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae respectively. Using real-time PCR as a reference standard, the clinical sensitivity (positive) and specificity (negative) of CPA was found to be 98·15% (53/54) and 100% (26/26) for C. trachomatis, and 93·75% (30/32) and 100% (48/48) for N. gonorrhoeae. Eight swab specimens tested positive for both C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae simultaneously by real-time PCR and CPA assay. This study demonstrated that CPA is an affordable and accessible assay for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae detection, with high sensitivity and specificity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Rapid and specific detection of the sexually transmitted pathogens Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) would enable early treatment and management of their spread. Here, for the first time, a user friendly DNA isothermal amplification method named cross-priming amplification (CPA), was used to test C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae with high sensitivity and specificity. The results indicate that CPA has great potential for improving C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae diagnostics which could be particularly advantageous in resource-limited areas.

Abstract
Ion transport peptide (ITP) and its alternatively spliced homologous ITP-like (ITPL) products play important roles in various insect developmental processes. We found for the first time that alternative 5' untranslated regions (5' UTRs) of ITPL (NilluITPLs-1, -2, -3 and -4) control spatiotemporal expression in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, as demonstrated by reverse-transcription quantitative PCR. By using an alternative 5' UTR, NilluITPL-1 was expressed exclusively in the male reproductive system, resulting in the production of the NilluITPL seminal fluid protein. Interestingly, NilluITPLs-3 and -4 were expressed exclusively in the integument, indicating a specialized function for NilluITPL during ecdysis and eclosion. We investigated the functions of NilluITP and NilluITPL using RNA interference (RNAi). We did not observe apparent phenotypes when expression of NilluITPLs was suppressed. However, when NilluITP expression was suppressed, the insect exhibited melanism and failed wing expansion, indicating that NilluITP is a neuropeptide associated with wing expansion in addition to bursicon. Additionally, in contrast to bursicon, the insects showed increased melanism when NilluITP was eliminated by RNAi. Unlike previous studies of ITP/ITPL in other species, NilluITP was very important in the control of N. lugens postecdysial behaviours but was not critical during ecdysis. Thus, the functions of ITP and ITPL are more complex in insects than previously thought.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feasibility of the remote control endovascular robotic system in interventional angiography. Method: The endovascular robotic system Heifetz™ and the matched steerable catheter Mirage™ were used to cannulate all the target vessels in the vascular model and cerebral arteries originated from the aorta of Bama mini-pigs under fluoroscopic guidance. The technical success rate, cannulation time and exposure dose were all collected and compared with the result of using conventional techniques. Result: All the target vessels were successfully cannulated. The average cannulation time for the steerable catheter into left subclavian artery, left common carotid artery, brachiocephalic artery, right common carotid artery and right subclavian artery in the vascular model was (21.3±2.8)s, (28.8±5.2)s, (17.7±2.6)s, (31.5±5.1)s and (24.2±3.7) s, respectively, while the average exposure dose was (9.3±1.2)mGy, (12.4±2.2)mGy, (7.4±1.2)mGy, (14.2±2.5)mGy and( 10.4±1.9)mGy, respectively. The endovascular robotic system completed the cerebral angiography in Bama mini-pigs successfully. The average cannulation time for left innominate artery, right innominate artery, right subclavian artery, common internal carotid trunk, left internal carotid artery and right internal carotid artery was (41.5±6.8)s, (29.1±3.7)s, (40.7±5.5)s, (40.1±5.8)s, (59.6±9.0)s and( 60.3±10.1)s, respectively, while the average exposure dose was (40.6±6.5)mGy, (36.0±5.2)mGy, (39.8±6.1)mGy, (43.9±6.7)mGy, (51.0±7.4)mGy and( 50.1±7.8)mGy, respectively. There was no significant difference between robotic and conventional group in success rate, cannulation time and exposure dose. Conclusion: The remote digital control endovascular robotic system could cannulate the target vessel in both vascular model and complete the cerebral angiography in Bama mini-pigs, which shows the feasibility of using this robotic system in endovascular intervention procedures under remote control.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of benzoic acid (BA) on growth performance, intestinal development and intestinal barrier function in weaned pigs. Ninety weaned pigs were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: a basal diet (CON), the basal diet supplemented with 2000 mg/kg benzoic acid (BA1) and 5000 mg/kg benzoic acid (BA2). At the end of days 14 and 42, six pigs per treatment were randomly selected to collect plasma and intestinal samples. Results showed that BA supplementation not only improved final body weight, daily growth and feed conversion ratio from days 15 to 42 and days 1 to 42, but also decreased the activity of plasma diamine oxidase (day 42) and the pH values of jejunal contents (day 14) (p < 0.05). Ileal Bacillus populations (day 14) were increased by BA, while Escherichia coli counts in the ileum and caecum (day 42) were decreased (p < 0.05). Higher Lactobacillus counts occurred in the ileum (day 14, 42) of BA1-fed piglets as compared to CON and BA2-fed piglets (p < 0.05). In addition, BA supplementation increased the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (day 14, 42) and decreased the crypt depth (day 14) (p < 0.05). Growth-stimulating factors (insulin-like growth factor-1, day 42; insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor, day 14, 42) and tight junction protein (occludin, day 14, 42; zonula occludens-1, day 42)-related gene mRNA levels were upregulated in the jejunum of piglets fed BA diets (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study provides the first evidence that BA has beneficial effects on intestinal development and intestinal barrier function of weaned pigs, which can partly explain why growth performance of pigs was improved by dietary BA supplementation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the present study was to determine the correlation between blood calcium level, hematoma volume and stroke severity in the prognosis of acute cerebral hemorrhage patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS We selected 125 patients with acute cerebral hemorrhage admitted within 24 hours of symptom onset. Blood calcium levels were assessed by standard biochemical methods. Hematoma volume was measured by quantitative computed tomography. NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) scores at one month, and the differences in survival rate and survival period at follow-up visits were assessed. RESULTS Hematoma volume and NIHSS scores of the hypocalcemic group were higher than those of the hypercalcemic group. Those of the normocalcemic group were the lowest, and the differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The survival rate and survival period of the normocalcemic group were higher than those of the other two groups and the differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The logistics regression analysis showed that the APACHE II score, blood calcium level upon admission and hematoma volume were independent risk factors for survival (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS If blood calcium level is too low or too high, hematoma volume and stroke severity of acute cerebral hemorrhage patients may increase and is related to long-term survival.

Abstract
Oxidative stress suppresses animal health, performance, and production, subsequently impacting economic feasibility; hence, maintaining and improving oxidative status especially through natural nutrition strategy are essential for normal physiological process in animals. Phytochemicals are naturally occurring antioxidants that could be considered as one of the most promising materials used in animal diets in various forms. In this review, their antioxidant effects on animals are discussed as reflected by improved apparent performance, productivity, and the internal physiological changes. Moreover, the antioxidant actions toward animals further describe a molecular basis to elucidate their underlying mechanisms targeting signal transduction pathways, especially through the antioxidant response element/nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 transcription system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics, differential diagnosis and prognosis of pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas (PEHs). METHODS The clinical symptoms and imaging findings of 6 cases of PEHs were investigated and pathologic analyses including histomorphologic and immunohistochemical studies were performed. RESULTS Clinical symptoms of the patients were nonspecific and insidious. The typical radiological manifestation was characterized by multiple small pulmonary nodules. The pathological findings were well-demarcated hypocellular hyalinized nodules with more cellularity at the periphery of the nodule. The neoplastic cells showed mild nuclear atypia and prominent eosinophilic cytoplasm with vacuoles, attempting to form primitive vasculature. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive to CD31, CD34 and ERG. Follow-up data from 8 months to 5 years showed no tumor progression, except for the development of bone metastases in one case at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS PEHs are uncommon vascular tumors with low-intermediate malignancy. Using H&E and immunohistochemistry, the final pathological diagnosis can be made and misdiagnosed as a benign fibrotic nodule or other malignant tumors can be avoided. The most effective treatment is surgical resection, if necessary, combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

To sum up the operative experience and methods in microsurgical resection of petroclival meningiomas by the combining trans-subtemporal and suboccipital retrosigmoid keyhole approach. To explore the minimally invasive operation approach of petroclival meningiomas, to raise the removal degree and to improve the postoperative result using this approach. METHODS The clinical data of the consecutive 21 patients with the petroclival meningiomas were reviewed retrospectively. The method, degree of tumor resection, techniques of the combining keyhole approach, Karnofsky performance score (KPS) before and after operation were also analyzed. The neuronavigation guided operation was performed in 9 cases, and 12 cases were operated in the neuroelectrophysiological monitoring. RESULTS Total excision of the tumor resection (Simpson, I-II levels) was conducted in 18 cases (85.7%, 18/21), and 3 patients underwent close resection (Simpson III level, 14.3%, 3/21). Postoperative three-dimensional CT showed good lock bone flap restoration; Postoperative pathology confirmed meningioma. Postoperative cranial nerve dysfunction or new original nerve dysfunction were aggravated in 5 cases (23.8%) , including transient trochlear nerve (3 cases), abducent nerve (1 case), and the motor branch of trigeminal nerve paralysis (1 case). Abducent nerve paralysis (1 case) appeared, with hearing impairment. After the 3-month follow-up, 11 cases had the same KPS aspreoperation, 7 cases improved, and 3 cases not improved. The KPS score was 77.14±23.12 on average, and there was no statistically significant difference compared with that before operation (P>0.05). The postoperative follow-up for half a year showed fluent speaking and writing in 19 cases (KPS 70 or higher), and general recovery in 2 cases (KPS<70). The postoperative follow-up for 3-29 months showed no tumor recurrence or progress. CONCLUSION The combining trans-subtemporal and suboccipital retrosigmoid keyhole approach is simple, safe, and minimally invasive, and an ideal operation approach of petroclival meningioma. To master the operation skills and the intraoperative matters needing attention in the operation, is favorable to improve the resection rate and curative effect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect and possible mechanisms of olmesartan medoxomil on atherosclerosis of apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE(-/-)) mice. METHODS Sixteen 6-week-old male ApoE(-/-) mice were randomly divided into atherosclerosis model group fed with high fat diet, and olmesartan medoxomil intervention group fed with high fat diet and olmesartan medoxomil (10 mg·kg(-1)·day(-1,) per gavage). Eight C57BL/6 mice were fed with normal diet, and treated for 12 weeks. The blood pressure and the serum level of lipid were detected; the aorta were removed, oil red staining for plaque area, Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining for plaque morphology, Elastica van Gieson (EVG) staining for elastin, and picrosirius red (PSR) for collagen respectively; and the expression of cathepsin S (Cat S), smooth action protein (ASMA) and macrophage surface molecule-3 (Mac-3) were detected by immunohistochemisty analysis. RESULTS Serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein levels were significantly higher in atherosclerosis model group than in control group[(15.08±1.64) vs (2.06±0.15) mmol/L, (15.60±1.05) vs (0.00±0.00) mmol/L] (all P<0.01), while triglyceride level was similar between the two group. In contrast to model group, the mice in intervention group showed no statistical difference in blood pressure and plasma lipid levels, while the plaque areas in the aorta were significantly decreased (P<0.05) as well as the expression of Cat S and Mac-3[(2.4±1.2) vs (8.8±3.2)%, (2.2±1.2) vs (7.2±2.8)%] (all P<0.01). In addition, the elastin levels, collagen contents, and the expression of ASMA remained significantly higher compared with model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Olmesartan medoxomil could slow down the atherosclerosis process, the possible mechanism was implicated with the suppression of Cat S and decreased inflammatory responses alongside the increased elastin and collagen contents.

Abstract
X-ray computed tomography (CT) has emerged as a key imaging tool in the characterization of materials, allowing three-dimensional visualization of an object non-destructively as well as enabling the monitoring of damage accumulation over time through time-lapse imaging. However, small defects and cracks can be difficult to detect, particularly in composite materials where low-contrast, plate-like geometries of large area can compromise detectability. Here, we investigate a number of strategies aimed at increasing the capability of X-ray CT to detect composite damage such as transverse ply cracking and delamination, looking specifically at a woven glass fibre-reinforced three-dimensional composite. High-resolution region of interest (ROI) scanning, in situ loading, phase contrast and contrast agents are examined systematically as strategies for improving the defect detectability. Spatial resolution, contrast, signal-to-noise ratio, full width at half maximum, user friendliness and measurement time are all considered. Taken together, the results suggest that high-resolution ROI scanning combined with the increased contrast resulting from staining give the highest defect detectability. This article is part of the themed issue 'Multiscale modelling of the structural integrity of composite materials'.

Abstract
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells exhibit disrupted regulation of cell death and differentiation, and therefore the fate of these leukemic cells is unclear. Here, we provide the first evidence that a small percentage of APL cells undergo a novel cell death pathway by releasing extracellular DNA traps (ETs) in untreated patients. Both APL and NB4 cells stimulated with APL serum had nuclear budding of vesicles filled with chromatin that leaked to the extracellular space when nuclear and cell membranes ruptured. Using immunofluorescence, we found that NB4 cells undergoing ETosis extruded lattice-like structures with a DNA-histone backbone. During all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-induced cell differentiation, a subset of NB4 cells underwent ETosis at days 1 and 3 of treatment. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly elevated at 3 days, and combined treatment with TNF-α and IL-6 stimulated NB4 cells to release ETs. Furthermore, inhibition of autophagy by pharmacological inhibitors or by small interfering RNA against Atg7 attenuated LC3 autophagy formation and significantly decreased ET generation. Our results identify a previously unrecognized mechanism for death in promyelocytes and suggest that ATRA may accelerate ET release through increased cytokines and autophagosome formation. Targeting this cellular death pathway in addition to conventional chemotherapy may provide new therapeutic modalities for APL.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the association between ERCC1 codon C118T polymorphism and the response rate of platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with late-stage bladder cancer. A total of 41 eligible patients histologically confirmed as having stage IV muscle-invasive transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder were treated with platinum-based chemotherapy for 2-6 cycles. The genotypes of patients were determined by PCR amplification of genomic DNA followed by restriction enzyme digestion. Positive responses were categorized as complete and partial responses. In addition, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were also determined as indicators of long-term outcomes. The genotype frequencies of C/C, C/T and T/T genotypes were 56.1, 34.1, and 9.8%, respectively. Positive response was observed in 14 patients (34.1%), while 27 patients (65.9%) were negative responders. As compared with individuals carrying the C/T and T/T genotypes, those with the C/C genotype had significantly improved short-term treatment responses (P = 0.018). The median PFS of patients carrying the C/C genotype was 6.3 months, while that of patients with C/T and T/T genotypes was 4.2 months (P = 0.023). Moreover, the median OS for patients carrying the C/C genotype was also longer as compared with that of patients carrying C/T and T/T (11.7 months vs 8.5 months, P = 0.040). Our results indicated that the ERCC1 codon 118 polymorphism may have predictive potential for chemotherapy treatment responses in late-stage bladder cancer patients.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate whether serum complement C3 is related to the prevalence and incidence of prediabetes in an adult population. METHODS A cross-sectional (n = 10 206) and prospective cohort study (n = 3333), with a mean (range; 95% CI) follow-up of 2.63 (1-6; 2.58-2.68) years, was conducted in people recruited from the Health Management Centre of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in Tianjin, China. Measurement of serum C3 concentration, blood fasting glucose, oral glucose tolerance, HbA1c and other potential confounding factors was performed at baseline and each year during the follow-up. Prediabetes was defined according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Adjusted logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the relationships between C3 quintiles and prediabetes. RESULTS The prevalence and incidence of prediabetes were 38.5% and 119 per 1000 person-years, respectively. In cross-sectional analysis, after adjustment for potential confounders, the odds ratios of prediabetes for increasing quintiles of C3 were 1.00 (reference), 1.32 (95% CI 1.14-1.53), 1.37 (95% CI 1.18-1.59), 1.75 (95% CI 1.51-2.03), 2.25 (95% CI 1.93-2.62; P for trend < 0.0001). In the cohort analysis, the multiple-adjusted hazard ratio of prediabetes in the highest quintile of baseline C3 was 1.43 (95% CI 1.15, 1.78; P for trend < 0.001), when compared with the lowest quintile. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that elevated serum C3 levels are significantly related to an increased risk of developing prediabetes in an adult population, suggesting that C3 can be used as a biomarker in high-risk individuals to improve primary prevention of prediabetes and diabetes.

Abstract
Fermented rapeseed meal (FRSM) contains greater levels of protein and less glucosinolates, NDF, and phytic acid than rapeseed meal (RSM) and might be an attractive feedstuff for swine, but its nutritional value has been poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of RSM fermented by for growing pigs. In Exp. 1, 6 barrows (21.20 ± 1.47 kg initial BW) fitted with a T-cannula in the distal ileum were allotted to a repeated 3 × 3 Latin square with 3 diets and 3 periods per square to determine the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and AA. A N-free diet and 2 diets containing RSM or FRSM as the only source of AA were formulated. Results indicated that there was no difference in AID and SID of CP and most AA between FRSM and RSM. However, the AID of 2 indispensable AA (Lys and Met) and 3 dispensable AA (Asp, Gly, and Tyr) were greater (P < 0.05) for FRSM than for RSM. The SID of only 2 dispensable AA (Gly and Tyr) were greater (P < 0.05) for FRSM than for RSM. In Exp. 2, 16 barrows (32.57 ± 2.67 kg initial BW) were allotted to 2 diets formulated to contain RSM or FRSM as the sole source of P to determine the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of P. The ATTD and standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of P in FRSM were 72.10 and 77.31%, respectively. These values were greater (P < 0.01) than in RSM (34.79 and 41.34%, respectively). In Exp. 3, 24 growing barrows (32.23 ± 1.33 kg initial BW) were fed 3 diets with 8 replicate pigs per diet to measure concentration of DE and ME of FRSM. A corn diet consisting of 98.40% corn was formulated and 2 additional diets were formulated by mixing corn with 35% RSM or FRSM. The DE and ME in FRSM (2,887 and 2,650 kcal/kg of DM, respectively) were greater (P < 0.05) than those in RSM (2,609 and 2,328 kcal/kg of DM, respectively). In summary, solid-state fermentation of RSM by has a greater nutritional value than RSM and is a promising alternative high-quality protein source.

Abstract
A novel method for very high resolution measurement of roll angle on a transparent plate is developed theoretically and tested experimentally. The new optical configuration is based on the interferometric readout of phase shift accumulated on the double passage through half wave plate, together with a careful control of polarization state by means of quarter wave plate, and optimizing the tilt of the folding mirror. Sensitivity to roll angle is greatly enhanced and a gain coefficient exceeding 700 is found theoretically, based on Jones' matrix analysis, with a 6-fold increase respect to previous results. In the experimental setup, at the optimum 36° incidence to retroreflector, we measured a gain coefficient of 340. Correspondingly, with an interferometer phase meter resolving 0.01°, a roll-angle resolution 0.1-arc sec is attained.

Abstract
A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary corn type (waxy corn [WC] vs. nonwaxy corn [NC]) and fasting period (2 h vs. 12-16 h) before slaughter on growth and plasma index in weaning pigs. Twenty-four crossbred barrows (8.26 ± 0.47 kg) were allotted to 4 treatments with 6 replications of 1 pig per replicate metabolism cage. Waxy corn contained less fat, a lower amylase:amylopectin ratio, more CP, and more starch than NC. Pigs fed the WC diet had lower jejunum digesta pH compared with those fed the NC diet ( < 0.05). Maltase activity in the jejunum and ileum mucosa ( < 0.01), sucrose activity in the ileum mucosa ( < 0.01), and amylase activity in the pancreas and jejunum digesta ( < 0.05) were increased in pigs fed the WC diet relative to those fed the NC diet. But the total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) of starch and CP was lower for the WC group ( < 0.05). Ingestion of the NC diet resulted in higher ( < 0.05) ADG and ADFI in the second week but did not affect ADG ( = 0.091) and the feed:gain ratio (F:G; = 0.077) during the whole experiment period. The plasma glucose ( < 0.01) concentration was higher and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; < 0.01) concentrations was lower in the hepatic portal vein in pigs fed the WC diet relative to those fed the NC diet. Fasting 2 h before slaughter decreased the jejunum and ileum digesta pH compared with the 12-h fasting group ( < 0.01). Villus height increased in the duodenum ( < 0.01) and jejunum ( < 0.05) and the villus height:crypt depth ratio increased in the duodenum ( < 0.05) of pigs after shortening the fasting period before slaughter. Shortening the fasting time before slaughter resulted in higher plasma glucose ( < 0.05) concentrations and a higher HDL-C:low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) ratio ( < 0.05) whereas the LDL-C ( < 0.05) concentrations were reduced in the hepatic portal vein. The results of this experiment indicate that although the production performance of both WC and NC diets is equal, the glucose concentration is higher and HDL-C is lower in the portal vein for the WC diet, and fasting time before slaughter has an influence on the plasma index and intestinal morphology in weaning pigs.

Abstract
Histamine, mainly produced by mast cells, is an important inflammatory mediator in immune response. Recently Histamine H4 Receptor (H4R) was also identified in mast cells, from which pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines are released. However, the mechanism of how H4R mediates these cytokines and chemokines release in mast cells was still unclear. To further explore the role of H4R in the immune inflammatory response in mast cells, we tested the release of inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) and the relevant signaling pathways activated by H4R on LAD2 cells (a human mast cell line). We found that the release of IL-8 and TNF-α were blocked by inhibitors of PI3K, ERK and Ca2+-Calcineurin-NFAT signaling pathways, while the release of these cytokines and chemokines were enhanced by the inhibitor of P38 signaling pathway. However, inhibitors of the JNK and NF-κB signaling pathways had little effect on the expression of the pro-inflammatory mediators. Moreover, activation of the H4R could induce phosphorylation of ERK, p38 and AKT in mast cells. In conclusion, we found that H4R mediates the release of inflammatory cytokine TNF-α and chemokine IL-8 in human mast cells via PI3K, Ca2+-Calcineurin-NFAT and MAPKs signaling pathways.

Abstract
The protective effect of a polysaccharide from Dictyophora indusiata(DP1)against oxidative hemolysis was comprehensively evaluated. The 2, 2-azobis (2-amidino-propane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced erythrocyte hemolysis assay showed that DP1 exhibited excellent anti-hemolytic activity(87.4% hemolysis suppression ratio at 20 nmol/mL). Also, the formation of conjugated diene induced by cupric chloride (CuCl2) in plasma was significantly inhibited by DP1. Besides, DP1 could effectively inhibit AAPH-induced overproduction of reactive oxygen species (81.5% inhibition at 20 nmol/mL) and alleviated the enhancement of intracellular antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and catalase (CAT) activities. Also, the malondialdehyde (MDA) formation caused by oxidative stress was suppressed by 57.0% at DP1 concentration of 20 nmol/mL. Taken together, the possible intracellular antioxidant detoxifying mechanism of DP1 was probably via preserving the activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx and CAT) as well as inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and thus alleviated erythrocytes oxidation and plasma oxidation.

[Relationship of preoperative coronal intervertebral angle changes in the lumbosacral region with postoperative trunk shift after congenital scoliosis surgery]. ZHONGHUA YI XUE ZA ZHI 2016; 96:20-4. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between the preoperative coronal intervertebral angle changes and postoperative trunk shift (TS) in patients who received congenital scoliosis correction. METHODS The data of 921 patients with congenital scoliosis, who received posterior congenital scoliosis correction and internal fixation, was retrospectively analyzed. Anteroposterior (AP) whole spine standing radiographs and right and left lateral bending radiographs were taken preoperatively, and AP whole spine standing radiographs were obtained postoperatively and at the final follow-up. TS was measured in the coronal plane, and intervertebral angle change was the sum of the absolute values of L4-S1 intervertebral angle changes in the coronal plane, and was determined before surgery, postoperatively, and at final follow-up. RESULTS A total of 38 patients with a mean age of 16.42±8.36 years old and a mean follow-up of 12.4 months (range, 6 to 36 months) were included. A median negative correlation were found between TS at the final follow-up and total variance of bending (r=-0.51, P=0.001). Groups were defined by two methods: coronal intervertebral angle changes ≥10° or <10°, and final follow-up TS < 20 mm or ≥ 20 mm. TS at the final follow-up was significantly greater in the <10° group than the ≥10° group (32.45 vs 12.44 mm, P=0.001), and coronal intervertebral angle changes was significantly greater in the TS < 20 mm group than the ≥ 20 mm group (14.2° vs 6°, P=0.001). CONCLUSION Postoperative TS which will not compensate spontaneously can be predicted by measurement of the preoperative intervertebral interspace angle in the congenital scoliosis lumbosacral region.

Abstract
AIM Recent findings highlight the critical role of the Wnt signaling pathway in cardiac repair and stem cell regulation. Our previous study shows that lithium chloride (LiCl) optimizes skeletal myoblast (SkM) for transplantation by mimicking the Wnt/β-catenin signaling activities. In this study, we evaluate the therapeutic potential of SkMs genetically modified with Wnt1gene (Wnt1 SkMs) in a rat model with myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS We harvested neonatal SkMs using Wistar rats (1-3-day old) transfected with p-EGFP-C3-Wnt1 plasmid. RT-PCR and immunofluorescence showed a higher expression of Wnt1 in the Wnt1 SkMs. We observed that Wnt1 SkMs increased connexin 43 (Cx43) expression, reduced apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and decreased caspase-3 expression via the canonical Wnt signaling pathways compared to the empty vector transfected SkMs (control SkMs). For in vivo studies, the myocardial infarction model was developed in the Wistar rats. The rats were grouped to receive 100 μL basal DMEM without cells or containing 1.5×106SkMs and Wnt1 SkMs. Histological studies revealed improved survival of SkMs, reduced cardiomyocytes apoptosis, and upregulated expression of Cx43 in Wnt1 SkMs therapy group. Echocardiography monitored four weeks after therapy showed improvement of the left ventricular function in rats treated with Wnt1SkMs compared to other groups. CONCLUSION Transplantation of Wnt1 SkMs improves rat myocardial function and enhances anti apoptotic properties of both SkMs and cardiomyocytes and upregulation of tissue Cx43 after infarction via the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling activities.

Abstract
Soybean hulls are a by-product of soybean processing for oil and meal production; Pleurotus eryngii stalk residues (PESR) are by-products of the edible portion of the fruiting body enriched in bioactive metabolites. This study evaluated the effects of co-fermented PESR and soybean hulls with Aureobasidium pullulans on performance and intestinal morphology in broiler chickens. The in vitro experimental results showed that xylananse and mannanase activity of solid-state fermented soybean hulls (100% SBH) and soybean hulls partially replaced with PESR (75:25, SHP) reached peak at day 12; solid-state fermentation (SSF) enhanced the total phenolic content and trolox equivalency in both products as well. Additionally, FSHP had higher xylotriose and mannobiose levels than fermented FSBH did. A total of 400 broilers (Ross 308) were assigned randomly into four groups receiving the basal diet (control) or the basal diet supplemented with 0.5% fermented SBH (0.5% FSBH), 0.5% fermented SBHP (0.5% FSHP) and 1.0% fermented SBHP (1.0% FSHP) until 35 d of age, respectively. Results demonstrated that 0.5% FSHP addition increased body weight gain as compared with corresponding normal diet fed control in birds during entire experimental period. Compared with the control group, 0.5% FSHP group significantly increased the ratio of lactic acid bacteria to Clostridium perfringens in ceca as well as ileum villus height and jejunum villus height/crypt depth ratio of 35 d old birds. In conclusion, 0.5% FSHP supplementation in the diet could obtain not only improved body weight gain, but optimal intestinal morphology by exerting its bioactive metabolite properties when fed to broilers.
