Abstract
OBJECTIVE Risk score (RS) model is a cost-effective tool to identify adults who are at high risk for diabetes. This study was to develop an RS model of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) prediction specifically for rural Chinese adults. METHODS A prospective whole cohort study (n = 28,251) and a sub-cohort study (n = 3043) were conducted from 2006-2014 and 2006-2008 to 2015 in rural Deqing, China. All participants were free of T2DM at baseline. Incident T2DM cases were identified through electronic health records, self-reported and fasting plasma glucose testing for the sub-cohort, respectively. RS models were constructed with coefficients (β) of Cox regression. Receiver-operating characteristic curves were plotted and the area under the curve (AUC) reflected the discriminating accuracy of an RS model. RESULTS By 2015, the incidence of T2DM was 3.3 and 7.7 per 1000 person-years in the whole cohort and the sub-cohort, respectively. Based on data from the whole cohort, the non-invasive RS model included age (4 points), overweight (2 points), obesity (4 points), family history of T2DM (3 points), meat diet (3 points), and hypertension (2 points). The plus-fasting plasma glucose (FPG) model added impaired fasting glucose (4 points). The AUC was 0.705 with a positive predictive value of 2.5% for the non-invasive model, and for the plus-FPG model the AUC was 0.754 with a positive predictive value of 2.5%. These models performed better as compared with 12 existing RS models for the study population. CONCLUSIONS Our non-invasive RS model can be used to identify individuals who are at high risk of T2DM as a simple, fast, and cost-effective tool for rural Chinese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide problem, accurate pathological and functional evaluation is required for planning treatment and follow-up. Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) can assess both capillary perfusion and tissue diffusion and may be helpful in evaluating renal function and pathology. PURPOSE To evaluate functional and pathological alterations in CKD by applying IVIM-DWI. STUDY TYPE Prospective study. SUBJECTS In all, 72 CKD patients who required renal biopsy and 20 healthy volunteers. FIELD STRENGTH 1.5T. ASSESSMENT All subjects underwent IVIM-DWI of the kidneys, and image analysis was performed by two radiologists. The mean values of true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) were acquired from renal parenchyma. Correlation between IVIM-DWI parameters and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as pathological damage, were assessed. STATISTICAL TESTS One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), paired sample t-test and Spearman correlation analysis. RESULTS The paired sample t-test revealed that IVIM-DWI parameters were significantly lower in medulla than cortex for both patients and controls (P < 0.01). Regardless of whether eGFR was reduced, ANOVA revealed that f values of renal parenchyma were significantly lower in patients than controls (P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis revealed that there were positive correlations between eGFR and D (cortex, r = 0.466, P < 0.001; medulla, r = 0.491, P < 0.001), and between eGFR and f (cortex, r = 0.713, P < 0.001; medulla, r = 0.512, P < 0.001). Negative correlations were found between f and glomerular injury (cortex, r = -0.773, P < 0.001; medulla, r = -0.629, P < 0.001), and between f and tubulointerstitial lesion (cortex, r = -0.728, P < 0.001; medulla, r = -0.547, P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION IVIM-DWI might be feasible for noninvasive evaluation of renal function and pathology of CKD, especially in detection of renal insufficiency at an early stage. Abstract
Resonance based biosensors are used in the detection of biological molecules for medical diagnostics. Sensing in a liquid environment is very desirable for this application, but presents a significant challenge for resonators based upon conventional technologies. In this paper, the major originality lies in the development and exposition of a fundamental theory enabling design of an original elastic resonant sensor whose modes are engineered to simultaneously possess three separate but complementary dynamical properties: namely, (1) in-plane displacement of the free interface whereby the SH waves are uncoupled from the SV and P waves; (2) intrinsic modal trapping; and finally, (3) cyclic symmetry and modal degeneracy. The modal trapping is due to the physical configuration of the resonator resulting in an imaginary wavenumber for one region of the resonator. The wave will be evanescent in this region and propagating elsewhere. The fundamental principles are elucidated, and analytical techniques are presented that facilitate the efficient design of this unique class of device.

Abstract
A 55-year-old male presented with fever, stupor, aphasia, and left hemiparesis. A history of head trauma 3 months before was also reported. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed slight contrast enhancement of lesions under the right frontal skull plate and right frontal lobe. Because of deterioration in nutritional status and intracranial hypertension, the patient was prepared for burr hole surgery. A subdural empyema (SDE) recurred after simple drainage. After detection of Brucella species in SDE, craniotomy combined with antibiotic treatment was undertaken. The patient received antibiotic therapy for 6 months (two doses of 2 g ceftriaxone, two doses of 100 mg doxycycline, and 700 mg rifapentine for 6 months) that resulted in complete cure of the infection. Thus, it was speculated that the preexisting subdural hematoma was formed after head trauma, which was followed by a hematogenous infection caused by Brucella species.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the threshold of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) parameters, apparent diffusion coefficient [ADCtotal and ADC(0,500) ] ratios 24-48 hours after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) to assess early response in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to compare the association between diffusion-weighted imaging with the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM-DWI) and mRECIST with survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent were obtained for this prospective study. There were 30 patients undergoing 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with IVIM-DWI of 12 b values (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, 100, 200, 300, 500, 800 s/mm2 ) 1 week before and 24-48 hours after TACE. Response was assessed with the change of true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), perfusion fraction (PF), ADCtotal , and ADC(0,500) values relative to baseline and with mRECIST. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to explore the threshold of these parameters ratios. Kaplan-Meier, log-rank tests, and the Cox hazard model were used to correlate the response variables with progression-free survival (PFS) and to assess the incidence and potential clinical risk factors for PFS. Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the difference in parameters between different groups with progression within and beyond median PFS prior to TACE. RESULTS Median PFS was 99 days, within which 16 patients progressed. The threshold of ADCtotal ratio, D ratio, and ADC(0,500) ratio were 13.1% (P = 0.001), 7.0% (P = 0.011), and 3.6% (P = 0.018) with sensitivity and specificity of 78.6% and 87.5%, 85.7% and 62.5%, 78.6% and 75%, respectively. The predictive utility of ADCtotal ratio, D ratio, and ADC(0,500) ratio for PFS were 0.848, 0.772, and 0.754, respectively. Survival analyses showed ADCtotal ratio, D ratio, ADC(0,500) ratio, liver cirrhosis, and mRECIST had a significant effect on PFS (P < 0.05). ADCtotal ratio and D ratio were independent predictors for 99-day PFS (P = 0.025, P = 0.036). There were no significant differences in pretreatment IVIM-DWI parameters between PFS > 99-day group and PFS ≤ 99-day group with P values of 0.547 for D, 0.394 for D*, 0.575 for PF, 0.901 for ADC(0,500) , and 0.506 for ADCtotal , respectively. CONCLUSION The ADCtotal ratio and D ratio 24-48 hours after TACE were independent predictors for response to TACE for HCC, and showed stronger association with PFS than mRECIST. Abstract
Abstract
Rationale: A robust index for gene expression related to activity of estrogen (ESR1) and progesterone (PGR) receptors could predict sensitivity to endocrine therapy in metastatic breast cancer.
Methods: Transcripts correlated with ESR1 and PGR expression in 389 hormone receptor-positive breast cancer samples (Affymetrix U133A microarrays) were ranked for reliability according to their pre-analytical (intratumoral heterogeneity, biopsy type) and analytical reproducibility. Eighteen target and ten reference genes were selected and summarized as the SETER/PR index. The SETER/PR index was evaluated in a different set of 140 biopsies from distant metastases of hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative (HR+/HER2-) breast cancer, and in additional pre-analytical and analytical sample cohorts. Thereafter, SETER/PR was translated to a customized format for application to formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sections.
Results: Higher SETER/PR in a metastasis was associated with longer progression-free survival (PFS, 9 vs. 2 months) and overall survival (OS, 50 vs. 19 months) following endocrine therapy in the cohort with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and relapsed disease (n=79), so a cut point was defined in that cohort. SETER/PR was also significantly associated with PFS after adjusting for PR status of the metastasis, presence of visceral metastases, number of previous relapse events, and clinical history of previous sensitivity to endocrine therapy (HR 0.485, 95%CI 0.265 – 0.889, p = 0.019). Technically, SETER/PR was highly reproducible under different pre-analytical and analytical conditions, including host organ contamination. The translated SETER/PR assay used a single 10 µm FFPE tissue section, did not require RNA purification, and represented the microarray results from matched fresh samples with excellent agreement (correlation = 0.980, n = 31).
Conclusion: The SETER/PR index is a new biomarker to predict PFS and OS for patients with HR+/HER2- MBC who receive endocrine therapy. The assay is applicable to FFPE tissue sections from small biopsies of metastases. Additional independent (blinded) validation studies will be necessary to confirm these results.Rationale: A robust index for gene expression related to activity of estrogen (ESR1) and progesterone (PGR) receptors could predict sensitivity to endocrine therapy in metastatic breast cancer.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the correlation between diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI)-derived parameters and prognostic factors for rectal adenocarcinoma. Materials and Methods This study was approved by the local institute review board, and written informed consent was obtained from each patient. Data from 56 patients (median age, 59.5 years; age range, 31-86 years) with rectal adenocarcinoma between April 2014 and September 2015 were involved in this prospective study. DKI (b = 0, 700, 1400, and 2100 sec/mm2) and conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (b = 0, 1000 sec/mm2) were performed. Kurtosis and diffusivity from DKI and apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) from diffusion-weighted imaging were measured by two radiologists. Student t test, receiver operating characteristic curves, and Spearman correlation were used for statistical analysis. Results Kurtosis was significantly higher in high-grade than in low-grade rectal adenocarcinomas on the basis of both the number of poorly differentiated clusters (PDCs) (1.136 ± 0.086 vs 0.988 ± 0.060, P < .05) and World Health Organization (WHO) grades (1.103 ± 0.086 [standard deviation] vs 1.034 ± 0.103, P < .05). In PDC grading, the diffusivity and ADC were significantly lower in high-grade tumors than in low-grade tumors (1.187 ± 0.150 vs 1.306 ± 0.129 and 1.020 ± 0.113 vs 1.108 ± 0.097, respectively; P < .05) and showed similar correlations with histologic grades (r = -0.486 and r = -0.406, respectively; P > .05). Compared with both diffusivity and ADC, kurtosis showed significantly higher sensitivity (83.3% [20 of 24] vs 70.8% [17 of 24] and 70.8% [17 of 24], respectively) and specificity (96.8% [31 of 32] vs 84.4% [24 of 32] and 81.3% [26 of 32], respectively). Kurtosis showed a better correlation with PDC grades than with WHO grades (r = 0.797 vs r = 0.293, P < .05). Kurtosis was significantly higher in pN1-2 than in pN0 tumors (1.086 ± 0.103 vs 1.009 ± 0.086, P < .05). Conclusion Kurtosis derived from DKI demonstrated a higher correlation with histologic grades compared with diffusivity and ADC. It also showed better performance in differentiating between high- and low-grade rectal adenocarcinomas and between pN1-2 and pN0 tumors. © RSNA, 2016.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the diagnostic accuracy of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-derived parameters and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in distinguishing between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and fat poor angiomyolipoma (AML). MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-three patients with pathologically confirmed renal tumors were included in the study. All patients underwent renal 1.5T MRI, including IVIM protocol with 8 b values (0-800 s/mm2). The ADC, diffusion coefficient (D), pseudodiffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) were calculated. One-way ANOVA was used for comparing ADC and IVIM-derived parameters among clear cell RCC (ccRCC), non-ccRCC and fat poor AML. The diagnostic performance of these parameters was evaluated by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS The ADC were significantly greater in ccRCCs than that of non-ccRCCs and fat poor AMLs (each p < 0.010, respectively). The D and D* among the three groups were significantly different (all p < 0.050). The f of non-ccRCCs were less than that of ccRCCs and fat poor AMLs (each p < 0.050, respectively). In ROC analysis, ADC and D showed similar area under the ROC curve (AUC) values (AUC = 0.955 and 0.964, respectively, p = 0.589) in distinguishing between ccRCCs and fat poor AMLs. The combination of D > 0.97 × 10-3 mm2/s, D* < 28.03 × 10-3 mm2/s, and f < 13.61% maximized the diagnostic sensitivity for distinguishing non-ccRCCs from fat poor AMLs. The final estimates of AUC (95% confidence interval), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy for the entire cohort were 0.875 (0.719-0.962), 100% (23/23), 75% (9/12), 88.5% (23/26), 100% (9/9), and 91.4% (32/35), respectively. CONCLUSION The ADC and D showed similar diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing between ccRCCs and fat poor AMLs. The IVIM-derived parameters were better than ADC in discriminating non-ccRCCs from fat poor AMLs.

Abstract
Glycosylation is one of the major posttranslational modifications of proteins. N-glycosylation (Asn-linked) and O-glycosylation (Ser/Thr-linked) are the two main forms. Abnormal O-glycosylation is frequently observed on the surface of tumor cells, and is associated with an adverse outcome and poor prognosis in patients with cancer. O-glycans (Tn, sTn, and T antigen) can be synthesized in the Golgi apparatus with the aid of several glycosyltransferases (such as T-synthase and ST6GalNAc-I) in a suitable environment. The unique molecular chaperone of T-synthase is Cosmc, which helps T-synthase to fold correctly in the endoplasmic reticulum. Dysregulation of these glycosyltransferases, molecular chaperones, or the environment is involved in the dysregulation of O-glycans. Tn, sTn, and T antigen neo- or over-expression occurs in many types of cancer including gastric, colon, breast, lung, esophageal, prostate, and endometrial cancer. This review discusses the major synthetic pathway of O-glycans and the mechanism by which Tn, sTn, and T antigens promote tumor metastasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the accuracy of the T1 relaxation time index on gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for staging liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), in comparison and combination with the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study of gadoxetic acid-enhanced T1 mapping and serum biochemical tests was performed on 126 CHB patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced 1.5T MRI, and the histological score used as the gold standard. The reduction rate of T1 relaxation time before and 20 minutes after gadoxetic acid injection (ΔT1 , ΔR1%), the contrast uptake rate (KHep ), APRI, and FIB-4 were calculated. The diagnostic efficacy of ΔT1 , ΔR1%, KHep , APRI, and FIB-4 for predicting stage 2 or greater (≥S2), stage 3 or greater (≥S3), and stage 4 (S4) was compared. RESULTS ΔT1 (r = -0.513, P < 0.001), ΔR1% (r = -0.626, P < 0.001), KHep (r = -0.527, P < 0.001), APRI (r = 0.519, P < 0.001), and FIB-4 (r = 0.476, P < 0.001) correlated significantly with fibrosis stages. Areas under the curves (AUCs) of ΔR1% for detecting ≥S2, ≥S3, and S4 were 0.849, 0.827, and 0.809, which were greater than that of APRI (0.763, 0.745, 0.787) and FIB-4 (0.727, 0.738, 0.772), but significant difference was found only in discriminating ≥S2 between ΔR1% and FIB-4 (P = 0.027). The combination of all five indices performed best, with AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.860, 87.21%, and 72.50% for diagnosing ≥S2, 0.878, 82.81%, and 85.48% for ≥S3, and 0.867, 80.00%, and 83.95% for S4. CONCLUSION The gadoxetic acid-enhanced T1 relaxation time index appears to be superior to APRI and FIB-4 for predicting hepatic fibrosis. The combined use of gadoxetic acid-enhanced T1 mapping, APRI, and FIB-4 may be more reliable for staging liver fibrosis in CHB. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 4 J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2017;45:1186-1194.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare Multicontrast ATherosclerosis Characterization (MATCH) with conventional multicontrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the characterization and quantification of carotid plaque components. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-three consecutive patients underwent carotid plaque 3.0T MRI including conventional multicontrast sequences and MATCH, with 13 of them having carotid endarterectomy for histology validation. The detection of major plaque components including lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC), loose matrix (LM), intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH), and calcification (CA) and measurement of lumen area, outer wall area, normalized wall index (NWI), and plaque components areas were compared between the two protocols. RESULTS Plaque analysis and comparison were done on 298 matched cross-sectional MRI. MATCH detected significantly more calcifications than conventional consequences (P < 0.01). The difference in detection of IPH (P = 0.07) and LRNC (P = 0.10) approached significance. There was no significant difference in demonstration of LM (P =0.52). A larger area of IPH and CA was measured on MATCH (P < 0.01). The difference nearly reached significance between the two protocols in measuring lumen area (P = 0.09) and outer wall area (P = 0.08). No significant difference was found when measuring the mean area of LRNC (P = 0.15) and LM (P = 0.14) and NWI (P = 0.38). By using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, the accuracy of MATCH and conventional protocols did not differ significantly in the detection of IPH (P = 0.15), LRNC (P = 0.61), LM (P = 0.48), and CA (P = 0.11) when histology served as a reference. CONCLUSION MATCH was comparable if not superior to conventional protocol in identification and quantification of major carotid plaque components. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 1 J. Magn. Reson. Abstract
OBJECTIVE MiR-183 acts as an oncomiR and is usually upregulated in hepatocellular cancer (HCC). This study aims to study the association between miR-183 dysregulation and multi-drug resistance (MDR). Also, how it is dysregulated in HCC cells was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS The association between miR-183 and HIF-1α in HCC cell line BEL-7402 and the multidrug-resistant variant BEL-7402/5-fluorouracil (BEL-7402/5-FU) were studied using qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The mediators involved in feedback regulation between miR-183 and HIF-1α were further studied. Then, the effect of the miR-183-SOCS6 axis on IC50 of BEL-7402/5-FU cells to 5-FU were investigated by MTT assay. RESULTS The expression of miR-183 and HIF-1α are positively correlated in BEL-7402 and BEL-7402/5-FU cells. IDH2 knockdown resulted in significantly increased HIF-1α expression in both BEL-7402 and BEL-7402/5-FU cells. Knockdown of SOCS6 had similar but stronger effect as miR-183 in promoting MRP2, P-gp, p-STAT3 and HIF-1α expression in BEL-7402 cells, while SOCS6 overexpression also showed similar but stronger effect as miR-183 inhibition in reducing MRP2, P-gp, p-STAT3 and HIF-1α levels in BEL-7402/5-FU cells. Both SOCS6 overexpression and miR-183 knockdown significantly increased the sensitivity of BEL-7402/5-FU cells to 5-FU. MiR-183 overexpression partly abrogated the effect of SOCS6 in enhancing 5-FU sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS Both HIF-1α-miR-183-IDH2-HIF-1α and HIF-1α-miR-183-SOCS6-p-STAT3-HIF-1α feedback loops are involved in miR-183 upregulation in HCC cells. MiR-183 can modulate MDR of HCC cells at least partly through suppressing SOCS6.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most common neonatal endocrine disorder in infancy. Dual oxidase 2 gene (DUOX2) mutations have been reported to be one of the leading genetic causes of CH. AIM The aim of this study was to screen for DUOX2 gene mutations among CH patients in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China and to define the relationships between DUOX2 genotypes and clinical phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were collected from 45 CH patients in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, and genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. All exons of the DUOX2 gene together with their exon-intron boundaries were screened by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS Sequencing analysis of DUOX2 in 45 CH patients revealed ten different variants in thirteen individuals. The variants included five known mutations, namely c.3329G>A (p.R1110Q), c.1588A>T (p.K530X), c.2635G>A (p.E879K), c.2524C>T (p.R842X) and c.4027G>T (p.L1343F), and one novel frame shift variant c.3340delC (p.L1114SfsX56), as well as four novel missense variants c.903G>T (p.W301C), c.2048G>T (p.R683L), c.1736T>C (p.L579P) and c.3413C>A (p.A1138D). The variant p.K530X is highly recurrent in our patient cohort but the clinical phenotypes vary greatly among those carrying this variant. Most patients with monoallelic or biallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants turned out to be cases of transient congenital hypothyroidism (TCH), while three patients with triallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were associated with permanent congenital hypothyroidism (PCH). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of DUOX2 pathogenic variants was high (29 %) among patients with CH in Guangxi, China. Monoallelic and biallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were mainly associated with TCH, while triallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were associated with PCH. Our study expanded the DUOX2 mutation spectrum, and functional studies of the novel mutations need to be conducted in the future.

Abstract
We have constrained possible new interactions which produce nonrelativistic potentials between polarized neutrons and unpolarized matter proportional to ασ[over →]·v[over →] where σ[over →] is the neutron spin and v[over →] is the relative velocity. We use existing data from laboratory measurements on the very long T_{1} and T_{2} spin relaxation times of polarized ^{3}He gas in glass cells. Using the best available measured T_{2} of polarized ^{3}He gas atoms as the polarized source and the Earth as an unpolarized source, we obtain constraints on two new interactions. We present a new experimental upper bound on possible vector-axial-vector (V_{VA}) type interactions for ranges between 1 and 10^{8} m. In combination with previous results, we set the most stringent experiment limits on g_{V}g_{A} ranging from ~μm to ~10^{8} m. We also report what is to our knowledge the first experimental upper limit on the possible torsion fields induced by the Earth on its surface. Dedicated experiments could further improve these bounds by a factor of ~100. Our method of analysis also makes it possible to probe many velocity dependent interactions which depend on the spins of both neutrons and other particles which have never been searched for before experimentally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ribosome-binding protein 1 (RRBP1) has been implicated in the regulation of unfolded protein response, which is involved in almost every aspect of cancer development. We aimed to explore the significance of RRBP1 in the progression and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS The study population consisted of 856 patients with stage I-III CRC from two hospitals. RRBP1 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in colorectal tissues. The correlation of RRBP1 expression and CRC occurrence was assessed in paired cancer-adjacent tissues. Factors contributing to prognosis were evaluated in a training-validation design with univariate and multivariate Cox analysis. Colorectal cancer aggressiveness caused by RRBP1 knockdown or overexpression was evaluated in CRC cells. RESULTS RRBP1 was aberrantly overexpressed in CRC. Compared with low-RRBP1 patients, high-RRBP1 patients had shorter disease-specific survival in the training (hazard ratio (HR), 2.423; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.531-3.835) and validation cohorts (HR, 3.749; 95% CI, 2.166-6.448) in multivariate Cox analysis. High-RRBP1 independently predicted a shorter disease-free survival (HR, 4.821; 95% CI, 3.220-7.218) in the validation cohort. RRBP1 knockdown reduced the aggressiveness of CRC cells in vitro and inhibited the growth of CRC xenografts in vivo. CONCLUSIONS High RRBP1 expression facilitates CRC progression and predicts an unfavourable post-operative prognosis.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES To differentiate endometrial cancer (ECa) from benign lesions in endometrial or in submucosa (BLs-ESm), and investigate whether the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of choline-containing compounds (Cho) obtained from three-dimensional (1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is associated with the aggressiveness of ECa. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-three patients with ECa and 15 patients with BLs-ESm underwent preoperative multivoxel (1)H MRS at 3 T MR. The amplitude of Cho peak of each voxel was recorded, and the corresponding SNR of Cho peak (ChoSNR) was calculated. The maximum ChoSNR (max ChoSNR) for each lesion was identified. The max ChoSNR of ECa and BLs-ESm, as well as type I ECa and type II ECa, was compared. The relationship between max ChoSNR and pathologic characteristics of tumors, including tumor grade, stage, type, and tumor size, was analyzed. RESULTS The mean max ChoSNR (±standard deviation [SD]) was 30.93 ± 16.89 for ECa and 10.40 ± 3.07 for BLs-ESm (P < .001). The mean max ChoSNR for type II ECa (48.54 ± 21.46) was higher than that for type I ECa (26.19 ± 12.02, P = .001). There were no significant differences among different grades (P = .449). The Spearman coefficient between max ChoSNR and stage was 0.423 (P = .014); the difference existed only between Ia and III ECa (P = .048). The Pearson coefficient between ChoSNR and tumor size was 0.515 (P = .002). CONCLUSIONS The max ChoSNR obtained from MRS can differentiate ECa from BLs and type I ECa and type II ECa, but cannot differentiate between each grade ECa and each International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage ECa. However, max ChoSNR increased with the increase in International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage and size of ECa.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation is a striking hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Previous studies have shown the contribution of glial cells such as astrocytes in TDP-43-linked ALS. However, the role of microglia in TDP-43-mediated motor neuron degeneration remains poorly understood. In this study, we show that depletion of TDP-43 in microglia, but not in astrocytes, strikingly upregulates cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production through the activation of MAPK/ERK signaling and initiates neurotoxicity. Moreover, we find that administration of celecoxib, a specific COX-2 inhibitor, greatly diminishes the neurotoxicity triggered by TDP-43-depleted microglia. Taken together, our results reveal a previously unrecognized non-cell-autonomous mechanism in TDP-43-mediated neurodegeneration, identifying COX-2-PGE2 as the molecular events of microglia- but not astrocyte-initiated neurotoxicity and identifying celecoxib as a novel potential therapy for TDP-43-linked ALS and possibly other types of ALS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dual-source CTA and black-blood MRA are recently developed techniques for evaluating carotid stenosis. The purpose of this study was to compare dual-source CTA with black-blood MRA and conventional TOF MRA in both detecting carotid stenosis by using DSA as a reference standard and demonstrating plaque morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty patients with suspected carotid artery stenosis underwent unenhanced MRA by using black-blood and TOF MRA and dual-source CTA. Source images from unenhanced MRAs and dual-source CTA were reconstructed with MIP or curved planar reconstruction. The degree of carotid artery stenosis was measured, and plaque surface morphology at the stenosis was analyzed and compared among different techniques. RESULTS Good correlation was observed for measuring the degree of carotid stenosis among dual-source CTA, black-blood MRA, TOF MRA, and DSA. Sensitivity and specificity for detecting severe stenosis were 100% and 97% with dual-source CTA, 100% and 95% with black-blood MRA, and 79% and 95% with TOF MRA. None of the 3 technologies resulted in stenosis of <50% being overestimated. Plaque surface irregularity or ulceration was more frequently detected with dual-source CTA and black-blood MRA than with TOF MRA and DSA. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary study shows that black-blood MRA is a promising technique, comparable with dual-source CTA and DSA, but better than TOF MRA, in the evaluation of carotid stenosis. Unlike dual-source CTA, black-blood MRA requires no intravenous contrast or radiation.

Abstract
We performed a retrospective cohort study of hospitalised cryptococcal meningitis (CM) patients at a single centre to evaluate the clinical epidemiological features of paradoxical cryptococcal-related immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (CM-IRIS) in a setting in China. A total of 154 AIDS patients with CM were involved, and 17.5% experienced IRIS at a median of 27 days after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Overall, 3 deaths were directly attributed to IRIS. The occurrences of CM-IRIS were independently associated with the pre-ART CD4+count, pre-C-reactive protein level, and the timing of ART initiation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to successfully establish an orthotopic murine model using two
different human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell lines and to propose a 3.0 tesla MRI
protocol for noninvasive characterization of this model. SW1990 and MIAPaca-2 tumor cells
were injected into the pancreas of BALB/C nu/nu mice. Tumor growth rate
and morphological information were assessed by 3.0 tesla MRI (T1WI, T2WI and DCE-MRI) and
immunohistology. Proliferation of SW1990 was significantly faster than that of MIAPaca-2
(P=0.000), but MIAPaca-2 mice had a significantly shorter survival than
SW1990 mice (41 days and 44 days respectively, P=0.027). MRI could
reliably monitor tumor growth in both cell lines: the tumors exhibiting a spherical growth
pattern showed a high-intensity signal, and the SW1990 group developed significantly
larger tumors compared with the MIAPaCa-2 group. There were no statistical differences
between the two groups in which tumor size was assessed using electronic calipers and an
MRI scan (P=0.680). Both tumors showed a slow gradual enhancement
pattern. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated tumor tissues showing high expression of Ki-67.
This model closely mimics human pancreatic cancer and permits monitoring of tumor growth
and morphological information by noninvasive 3.0 tesla MRI studies reducing the number of
mice required.

Abstract
Desktop dust has been studied as a source of food allergen, but not as a source of potential aeroallergen exposure. Thirty-six wiped samples from desktop surfaces were collected from preschools and schools. Samples were analyzed for detectable levels of common aeroallergens including Alternaria, cockroach, dog, dust mite, cat, mouse, and rat allergens by immunoassay. Mouse allergen was the most prevalent, detectable in 97.2% of samples. Cat allergen was detectable in 80.6% of samples, and dog allergen was detectable in 77.8% of samples. Other allergens were not as prevalent. Mouse was the only allergen that was highly correlated with settled floor dust collected from the same rooms (r = 0.721, P < 0.001). This is the first study to detect aeroallergens on desktop surfaces by using moist wipes. Allergens for mouse, cat, and dog were highly detectable in wipes with mouse desktop surface levels correlating with levels in vacuumed floor dust.

Abstract
The tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) can be used to dehydrogenate freely-diffusing tetrathienoanthracene (TTA) molecules on Cu(111), trapping the molecules into metal-coordinated oligomeric structures. The process proceeds at bias voltages above ~3 V and produces organometallic structures identical to those resulting from the thermally-activated cross-coupling of a halogenated analogue. The process appears to be substrate dependent: no oligomerization was observed on Ag(111) or HOPG. This approach demonstrates the possibility of controlled synthesis and nanoscale patterning of 2D oligomer structures on selected surfaces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the clinical efficacy and toxicity of pemetrexed combined with low-dose cisplatin (CDDP) concurrent with late-course accelerated hyperfractionated (LCAF) intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in patients with inoperable locally advanced oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS Patients with locally advanced ESCC (less than or equal to 75 years of age, clinical stages IIB-IVA and Karnofsky performance status ≥70) were enrolled into the study. A target group size of 22 was projected based on the estimation that 2-year overall survival (OS) would increase from 20% to 40%. Patients were treated with pemetrexed, low-dose CDDP and LCAF IMRT concurrently. The main objective of the study was for a 2-year OS, and the secondary objectives were progression-free survival (PFS), objective response, locoregional failure rate, and acute and late toxicities. RESULTS 25 patients were recruited from October 2008 to July 2011. The median OS was 21 months, with 2- and 5-year OS rates of 44% and 44%, respectively. The median PFS was 18.2 months. The objective response rate was 96% (24/25), with 11 complete responses and 13 partial responses. The locoregional failure rate was 16%. Grades 4 and 5 acute toxicity rates were 8% and 4%, respectively, while no Grade 3 or greater late toxicity was observed. CONCLUSION The findings of this Phase II study indicated that the therapeutic regimen appears to achieve an excellent response rate and favourable survival for locally advanced ESCC. However, the severe acute side effects should be considered cautiously in further studies. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE To our knowledge, this is the first study that introduced pemetrexed and low-dose CDDP combined with LCAF IMRT to treat locally advanced ESCC. The 5-year OS rate was as high as 44%, which was more favourable than other studies.

Abstract
Abstract
A novel nonpolluting type of calcium phosphate and iron(III) antiscalant MCn was synthesized. The observation shows that MCn causes a disordered calcium phosphate. Furthermore, both calcium phosphate and iron(III) inhibition increase with increasing degree of polymerization of MCn from 5 to 13, and the dosage of MCn plays an important role on calcium phosphate and iron(III) inhibition. Inhibition mechanism is proposed the interactions between calcium or iron ions and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are the fundamental impetus to restrain the formation of the scale in cooling water systems.

Abstract
Although the regulation of taxol biosynthesis at the transcriptional level remains unclear, 10-deacetylbaccatin III-10 β-O-acetyl transferase (DBAT) is a critical enzyme in the biosynthesis of taxol. The 1740 bp fragment 5'-flanking sequence of the dbat gene was cloned from Taxus chinensis cells. Important regulatory elements needed for activity of the dbat promoter were located by deletion analyses in T. chinensis cells. A novel WRKY transcription factor, TcWRKY1, was isolated with the yeast one-hybrid system from a T. chinensis cell cDNA library using the important regulatory elements as bait. The gene expression of TcWRKY1 in T. chinensis suspension cells was specifically induced by methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Biochemical analysis indicated that TcWRKY1 protein specifically interacts with the two W-box (TGAC) cis-elements among the important regulatory elements. Overexpression of TcWRKY1 enhanced dbat expression in T. chinensis suspension cells, and RNA interference (RNAi) reduced the level of transcripts of dbat. These results suggest that TcWRKY1 participates in regulation of taxol biosynthesis in T. chinensis cells, and that dbat is a target gene of this transcription factor. This research also provides a potential candidate gene for engineering increased taxol accumulation in Taxus cell cultures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this study are to summarize our experience of managing ovarian malignancy complicating pregnancy, to discuss the maternal and fetal outcomes, and to review the literature concerned. METHODS Forty-one patients with ovarian malignancies complicating pregnancy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 1990 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Of the 41 patients, malignancies included epithelial ovarian cancers (13/41, 31.7 %), epithelial borderline ovarian tumors (12/41, 29.3 %), ovarian malignant germ cell tumors (10/41, 24.4 %), sexcord stromal tumors (3/41, 7.3 %), metastatic ovarian tumors (2/41, 4.9 %), and primary ovarian choriocarcinoma (1/41, 2.4 %). The median overall survival was 30 months (range 3-165), with an overall mortality rate of 24.4 %. The pregnancy outcomes included termination in the first trimester (8/41, 19.5 %), full-term vaginal delivery (7/41, 17.0 %), full-term cesarean section (17/41, 41.5 %), and therapeutic cesarean section for premature birth (9/41, 22.0 %). One preterm newborn died, and the remaining 32 survived in healthy status. All patients underwent surgery, and those who deliberately delayed radical surgery had gloomy prognosis. Two patients received chemotherapy during pregnancy, and 24 patients started chemotherapy after pregnancy termination. CONCLUSIONS Management priority should be given to the malignancy of ovarian tumors at any stage of pregnancy. Surgical intervention is the main treatment modality, and delaying of radical surgery is not recommended for patients with suspicion of high malignancy. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment could offer satisfactory prognosis.

Abstract
One hundred and seventy-five pathologically confirmed new cases of female breast cancer in National Taiwan University Hospital were selected as the case group. Four hundred and fifty-seven inpatient controls were individually matched for each case by age and date of admission. Information of reproductive factors and potential confounders were collected from questionnaire interview and medical records. Menstrual cycles before and after first fuIl-term pregnancy were estimated from the questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the effects of reproductive risk factors and numbers of menstrual cycles before and after first full-term pregnancy. After adjusting for educational level, body mass index, family history of breast cancer and oral contraceptive use, age at menarche and menopause only showed borderline significance. Age at first full-term birth predicted breast cancer risk better. Parity was the most important protective factor. Number of menstrual cycles before first full-term pregnancy was also positively associated with breast cancer risk with linear trends.

Abstract
Eight strains of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) were isolated between 1986 and 1995 from broilers and layers at eight different farms in four provinces in China. The viruses were isolated from flocks which suffered from either respiratory disease or nephritis and the majority had not been vaccinated against IBV. Six strains were shown by monoclonal antibodies to differ from H120, Connecticut and Arkansas 99 strains of IBV and also to differ from each other. Four of these strains were serotyped; one (NRZ) was of the Massachusetts serotype, three (HV, NB-90 and TJ) shared a degree of antigenic similarity and were of a serotype that differed from Massachusetts and Connecticut. NB-90 was similar to both Gray and T strains whereas TJ shared some similarity with the T strain. Four strains, HV, NB-90, YY and TJ induced 33, 47, 60 and 90% mortality, respectively, in 3-week-old specific pathogen-free chickens. Clinical signs and post-mortem findings were identical to those induced by the nephropathogenic T strain. Chickens vaccinated with H120 strain, and then challenged with four highly pathogenic strains HV, NB-90, YY and TJ were not protected as determined by both virus isolation and mortality. The results show that highly pathogenic IBV strains which induce clinical nephritis occur frequently in poultry flocks in China. They also confirm field observations on the lack of protection by currently used IB vaccines of the Massachusetts serotype against challenge with these nephropathogenic strains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The frequency of monitoring glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) and its impact on glycemic control of Chinese Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients have not been well understood. AIM To explore the current status of the glycemic control, the frequency of HbA(1c) monitoring, and their relationship in T2DM outpatients in urban China. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out in 15 hospitals purposely sampled from 4 cities of China. T2DM outpatients were consecutively recruited, and underwent a face-to-face interview in outpatient consulting rooms using a self-developed structured questionnaire to collect information. All consented patients were invited to have a free HbA(1c) test. RESULTS Among 1511 subjects, the average level of HbA(1c) was 8.1±1.6% with the ideal percents of 13.6% and 24.8% (HbA(1c)<6.5% and <7.0%, respectively). Less than 1/3 (339/1157) had received 2 or more HbA(1c) tests per yr, and they had a significantly lower average of HbA(1c) than those having only 1 or no test per yr (F=5.012, p=0.007). After adjustment for possible confounders including age, gender, and city, there was a significantly inverse association with adjusted odds ratios of 2.56 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.71, 3.86] and 1.67 (95% CI: 1.11, 2.50), respectively, between the frequency of monitoring HbA(1c) (null, once vs ≥2 times per yr) and worse glycemic control (HbA(1c)≥7.0%). CONCLUSIONS Glycemic control of T2DM outpatients was poor in urban China. Frequency of HbA(1c) monitoring is seriously insufficient in majority of patients. Lower frequency of HbA(1c) monitoring is significantly associated with poor glycemic control.
