Abstract
Many dental restorative dental composites still utilize 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA) as base resin. The high viscosity of Bis-GMA necessitates dilution with dimethacrylate ethers of low viscosity such as triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). However, increased amounts of the TEGDMA have adverse effects on properties such as water uptake and curing shrinkage. The viscosity of the base resin should be as low as possible to enable the preparation of dental composites with a minimum content of diluent. To overcome the disadvantage of Bis-GMA, i.e., its high viscosity caused by hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl groups, 2,2-bis[4-(2-methoxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl propane (Bis-M-GMA) was prepared by substituting methoxy groups for hydroxyl groups in Bis-GMA. The viscosity of Bis-GMA was dramatically decreased from 574 (Pa.s) to 3.7 (Pa.s) by substitution of methoxy group. Consequently, the amount of TEGDMA included in the resin matrix could be minimized. Dental composites were prepared from Bis-M-GMA (or Bis-GMA) mixtures with TEGDMA filled with 75 wt % filler. Comparing the curing shrinkage of dental composite containing Bis-M-GMA with that prepared from Bis-GMA, the reduction in curing shrinkage was about 47%. Dental composites prepared from new resin matrixes also exhibited low water uptake and better properties in mechanical strength.

Abstract
Current trends in patient care include the desire for minimizing invasiveness of procedures and interventions. This aim is reflected in the increasing utilization of sentinel lymph node biopsy, which results in a lower level of morbidity in breast cancer staging, in comparison to extensive conventional axillary dissection. Optimized lymphoscintigraphy with triangulated body marking is a clinical option that can further reduce morbidity, more than when a hand held gamma probe alone is utilized. Unfortunately it is often either overlooked or not fully understood, and thus not utilized. This results in the unnecessary loss of an opportunity to further reduce morbidity. Optimized lymphoscintigraphy and triangulated body marking provides a detailed 3 dimensional map of the number and location of the sentinel nodes, available before the first incision is made. The number, location, relevance based on time/sequence of appearance of the nodes, all can influence 1) where the incision is made, 2) how extensive the dissection is, and 3) how many nodes are removed. In addition, complex patterns can arise from injections. These include prominent lymphatic channels, pseudo-sentinel nodes, echelon and reverse echelon nodes and even contamination, which are much more difficult to access with the probe only. With the detailed information provided by optimized lymphoscintigraphy and triangulated body marking, the surgeon can approach the axilla in a more enlightened fashion, in contrast to when the less informed probe only method is used. This allows for better planning, resulting in the best cosmetic effect and less trauma to the tissues, further reducing morbidity while maintaining adequate sampling of the sentinel node(s).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early exposure to high quantities of allergen has an important role in the incidence of atopic sensitization. In fact, subjects sensitized to house dust mites (HDMs) have a significantly higher proportion of births in the season when HDMs are most abundant. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether birth month patterns differ for asthmatic patients sensitized only to HDMs and for those sensitized to HDMs and other allergen(s). METHODS Among 2225 patients with asthma, aged 10-16 years, 1642 sensitized to HDMs were identified by skin prick testing. This group was composed of patients sensitized only to HDMs (n = 715) and patients sensitized to HDMs and other allergen(s) (n = 927). The birth month distributions of the group of HDM-sensitive asthmatics or its subgroups were compared with that of a reference population (total live births in the same years as the studied subjects). The risk ratio of a given birth month in relation to all the other months was calculated as an odds ratio (OR) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A significant difference in birth month distribution was observed for HDM-sensitive asthmatics (chi(2) = 23.6, P = 0.015), with higher rates of birth in August (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.04-1.46) and September (1.24, 1.04-1.46). When the two subgroups were analyzed separately, significantly more births were noted in August (1.34, 1.06-1.71) and September (1.34, 1.05-1.70) for those sensitized only to HDMs, whereas no such birth month preference was observed for those sensitized to HDMs and other allergen(s). CONCLUSIONS The HDM-positive asthmatics showed a greater proportion of births in August and September, which correspond to high HDM exposure. However, this birth month pattern was evident in asthmatic-sensitive only to HDMs, but was not observed in those sensitive to HDMs and other allergen(s).

Abstract
We have frequently observed diffusely increased skull activity on bone scans of obese patients, who do not have evidence of metabolic or metastatic bone disease. Skull activity of 25 obese patients were compared to that of age and sex-matched nonobese 25 patients visually and quantitatively. The results clearly indicated that diffusely increased skull activity is significantly more common on bone scans of obese patients because of disparate attenuation of overlying soft tissues. This knowledge will help obviate the need for additional radiologic and/or laboratory tests in search of other conditions associated with hot skull, ie, Paget's disease and metabolic bone disorders such as renal osteodystrophy and primary hyperparathyroidism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are no studies that have directly investigated the incremental reduction in sensory morbidity that lymphoscintigraphy images (LS) and triangulated body marking or other skin marking techniques provide during sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) compared to using only the probe without LS and skin marking or using only dye. However, an indirect assessment of this potential for additional sensory morbidity reduction is possible by extracting morbidity data from studies comparing the morbidity of SLNB to that of axillary lymph node dissection. METHODS A literature search yielded 13 articles that had data on sensory morbidity at specific time points on pain, numbness or paresthesia from SLNB that used radiotracer and probe or used only dye as a primary method of finding the sentinel node (SN). Of these, 10 utilized LS, while 3 did not utilize LS. By matching the data in studies not employing LS to the studies that did, comparisons regarding the percentage of patients experiencing pain, numbness/paresthesia after SLNB could be reasonably attempted at a cutoff of 9 months. RESULTS In the 7 studies reporting on pain after 9 months (> 9 months) that used LS (1347 patients), 13.8% of patients reported these symptoms, while in the one study that did not use LS (143 patients), 28.7% of patients reported these symptoms at > 9 months (P < 0.0001). In the 6 studies reporting on numbness and/or paresthesia at > 9 months that used LS (601 patients), 12.5% of patients reported these symptoms, while in the 3 studies that did not use LS (229 patients), 23.1% of patients reported these symptoms at > 9 months (P = 0.0002). Similar trends were also noted for all these symptoms at < or = 9 months. CONCLUSION Because of variations in techniques and time of assessing morbidity, direct comparisons between studies are difficult. Nevertheless at a minimum, a clear trend is present: having the LS images and skin markings to assist during SLNB appears to yield more favorable morbidity outcomes for the patients compared to performing SLNB with only the probe or performing SLNB with dye alone. These results are extremely pertinent, as the main reason for performing SLNB itself in the first place is to achieve reduced morbidity.

Abstract
Various dental restorative composite resins containing 2,2-bis-[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA) derivatives and spiro orthocarbonates (SOCs) were explored for minimizing the volumetric shrinkage that generally occurs during polymerization. Previous reports suggested mixing Bis-GMA with its derivative TMBis-GMA (2,2-bis[3,5-dimethyl-4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) to obtain a dental composite with low volumetric shrinkage. It was hypothesized that spiro orthocarbonates would expand volumetrically during polymerization, because of their sophisticated ring-opening reactions; therefore several of them were added to the mixture of Bis-GMA and TMBis-GMA to bring about further reductions in volumetric shrinkage. It was indeed possible to reduce the extent of volumetric shrinkage of dental composites containing SOCs, and to do so without compromising these resins' mechanical properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Abnormal bone scan findings in the spine are often nonspecific. The confidence level for the differential diagnosis between metastases and benign or degenerative changes may vary depending on their appearance, location or intensity. The recognition of a specific pattern for certain benign conditions and its subcategorization will increase the credibility of bone scan interpretation while retaining a high level of sensitivity. We report one such finding, focally increased activity on the lateral side of the cervical spine on the posterior view, most common at the C3-C5 level ("mid-cervical-lateral-focus"). METHODS Of 481 patients with various cancers who had at least 2 whole-body bone scans, 6 months or more apart, 41 patients were judged to show this characteristic "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" on at least one scan. Final diagnosis (metastasis vs. benign) for each "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" was made based on clinical grounds and serial bone scans. RESULTS The bone scan showed definite multiple metastases in 15 patients, and the differential diagnosis for the "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" was already clinically irrelevant in these patients. Nevertheless, the "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" was finally judged to be benign in 14 of these 15 patients and in all remaining 26 patients without other obvious metastases. The only "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" judged to be a metastatic focus was not only clinically redundant, but also the most intense among all the "mid-cervical-lateral-foci." in this series (too intense to be interpreted as benign). CONCLUSION The typical "mid-cervical-lateral-focus" pattern is extremely unlikely to represent metastases (virtually 0% in patients without other obvious metastases). This knowledge helps exclude metastases on bone scans.

Abstract
This case describes a patient who initially had peri-excisional injections of radiocolloid around a lumpectomy site that failed to visualize sentinel nodes during lymphoscintigraphy. After additional areolar-cutaneous junction injections, extremely indirect dermal lymphatic pathways were evident with resultant drainage to two sentinel nodes, both of which contained disease. Hybrid combination injections of radiotracer during sentinel lymph node biopsy is gaining in popularity. This case illustrates the validity of the hybrid injection techniques and the demonstrated accuracy despite seemingly disconnected and extremely tortuous pathways as demonstrated in the figure.

Abstract
AIM The effects of cold exposure on gene and protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), in heart and skeletal muscles, were studied in male adult Wistar rats. METHODS Cold immersion was accomplished by submerging the rats in shoulder-deep water maintained at approximately 18 degrees C, either acutely (1 h) or chronically (1 h day(-1), 5 days week(-1) for 20 weeks). The expressions of VEGF mRNA and protein in heart, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles were examined by Northern and Western blotting and competitive-polymerase chain reaction techniques. RESULTS The expressions of VEGF mRNA and protein were markedly increased in cardiac muscle of the cold-immersed group, particularly in the 1-hour exposure group, whereas VEGF mRNA and protein in gastrocnemius were decreased significantly after an acute exposure. Although the protein level in gastrocnemius remained low in the chronically exposed group, the expression of mRNA of VEGF(165) with chronic exposure in this group returned to the control level and that of VEGF(206) was 15% greater than that in controls. The expression of mRNA for VEGF(165) in soleus was also lowered by acute cold exposure, although that for VEGF(206) was stable. However, VEGF protein was increased by 50%. After 20 weeks, all of these parameters were increased over the levels found in the controls. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the VEGF gene may be a major regulatory factor in cardiac and skeletal muscle adaptation to the cold environment stimulating angiogenesis and thermogenesis.

Abstract
Nanoparticles with different morphology and composition were fabricated inside a polyimide (PI) matrix based on selectively oxidizing a layer of Fe(100-x)Pt(x) alloy metal film sandwiched between two PI precursor layers. Gamma-Fe2O3, Pt, and Fe3Pt nanoparticles were formed in a monolayer between two PI layers, depending on the alloy film composition and curing conditions. These particles were well-crystallized and sized between 4 and 10 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that Fe in the film preferentially reacted with the organic matrix whereas Pt remained metallic throughout the curing process, which enabled fabrication of particles different morphology and composition. This process can be easily extended to other alloy films, which provides an opportunity to fabricate nanoparticles relatively easily with desired composition and morphology embedded in an inert organic matrix.

Abstract
This study utilized mRNA differential display and the Gene Ontology (GO) analysis to characterize the multiple interactions of a number of genes involved in human papillomavirus (HPV)-16-induced cervical carcinogenesis. We used HPV-16-positive cervical cancer cell line (SiHa) and normal human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) as a control. Each gene has several biological functions in the GO, and hence, we chosen the several functions for each gene. and then, the specific functions were correlated with gene expression patterns. The results showed that 157 genes were up- or down-regulated above two-fold and organized into mutually dependent subfunction sets depending on the cervical cancer pathway, suggesting the potentially significant genes of unknown function. The GO analysis suggested that cervical cancer cells underwent repression of cancer-specific cell-adhesive properties. Also, genes belonging to DNA metabolism such as DNA repair and replication were strongly down-regulated, whereas significant increases were shown in protein degradation and in protein synthesis. The GO analysis can overcome the complexity of the gene expression profile of the HPV-16-associated pathway and identify several cancer-specific cellular processes as well as genes of unknown function. Also, it can become a major competing platform for the genome-wide characterization of carcinogenesis.

Abstract
The gene of the Arabidopsis thaliana H+/Ca2+ transporter, CAX1 (cation exchanger 1) was introduced into Japonica cultivars of rice (Ilpumbyeo) by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, and a large number of transgenic plants were produced. The neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII) gene was used as a selectable marker. The activity of neomycin phosphotransferase could be successfully detected in transgenic rice callus. The introduction of the CAX1 gene was also proven by PCR using CAX1-specific oligonucleotide primers in regenerated plants. Stable integration and expression of the CAX1 gene in T0 plants and T1 progeny were confirmed by DNA hybridization, Northern blot analysis, and luminescent analysis.

Abstract
We describe a procedure for producing transgenic bottle gourd plants by inoculating cotyledon explants with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain AGL1 that carries the binary vector pCAMBIA3301 containing a glufosinate ammonium-resistance (bar) gene and the beta-D-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene. The most effective bacterial infection was observed when cotyledon explants of 4-day-old seedlings were co-cultivated with Agrobacterium for 6-8 days on co-cultivation medium supplemented with 0.1-0.001 mg/l L-alpha-(2-aminoethoxyvinyl) glycine (AVG). The putatively transformed shoots directly emerged at the proximal end of cotyledon explants after 2-3 weeks of culturing on selection medium containing 2 mg/l DL-phosphinothricin. These shoots were rooted after 3 weeks of culturing on half-strength MS medium containing 0.1 mg/l indole acetic acid and 1 mg/l DL-phosphinothricin. Transgenic plants were obtained at frequencies of 1.9%. Stable integration and transmission of the transgenes in T1 generation plants were confirmed by a histochemical GUS assay, polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot analyses. Genetic segregation analysis of T1 progenies showed that transgenes were inherited in a Mendelian fashion. To our knowledge, this study is the first to show Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in bottle gourd.

Abstract
Lymphoscintigraphy, along with triangulated patient body marking, can serve as a guide for surgeons during sentinel lymph node harvesting. Unique drainage patterns have been noted, especially with areolar or intradermal based injections, which are becoming increasingly popular. The images lymphoscintigraphy provide have been invaluable in delineating these patterns. The authors present a case that simultaneously illustrates two separate points in the same patient, a reverse echelon node and a lymphatic ectasia. To our knowledge, this combination has never been described in the same patient. Perilesional and areolar-cutaneous junction injections were performed sequentially and generated these patterns that could potentially have resulted in added morbidity and a false-negative sentinel node if not realised before surgery. Lymphoscintigraphy added valuable information in the management of this patient, which can occasionally present with complex patterns of activity during sentinel node harvesting.

Abstract
Abstract
Context.—Polycythemia describes an increased proportion of red blood cells in the peripheral blood. In absolute polycythemia, there is increased red cell mass (RCM) with normal plasma volume, in contrast with apparent polycythemia, in which there is increased or normal RCM and decreased plasma volume. In order to deliver the appropriate treatment it is necessary to differentiate between the two.
Objective.—A retrospective analysis of RCM and plasma volume data are presented, with special attention to different methods of RCM interpretation.
Design.—The measurements of RCM and plasma volume in 64 patients were compared with the venous and whole-body packed cell volume, and the incidence of absolute and apparent polycythemia was determined for increasing hematocrit levels. Measurements of RCM and plasma volume were performed using chromium 51–labeled red cells and iodine 125–labeled albumin, respectively. The measured RCM of each patient was expressed as a percentage of the mean expected RCM and was also defined as being within or outside the range of 2 SD of the mean. The results were also expressed in the traditional manner of mL/kg body weight.
Results.—Twenty-one patients (13 women and 8 men) had absolute polycythemia. None of them had an increased plasma volume beyond 2 SD of the mean. When expressed according to the criteria of mL/kg body weight, 17 of the 21 patients had abnormally increased RCM, but 4 patients (19%) had a normal RCM value. Twenty-eight patients had apparent polycythemia. The remaining 15 patients had normal RCM and plasma volume.
Conclusions.—The measurement of RCM and plasma volume is a simple and necessary procedure in the evaluation of polycythemia. In obese patients, the expression of RCM in mL/kg body weight lacks precision, considering that adipose tissue is hypovascular. The results of RCM are best described as being within or beyond 2 SD of the mean value.

A case is presented where the perilesional injections of radiotracer produced a faint node. Subsequently, 45 minutes later, the same patient received an injection of radiotracer at the areolar-cutaneous junction, which "boosted" the activity in the original SN by more than 50 times. This case illustrates the marked improvement in SN counts that can occur with the addition of areolar-cutaneous junction injections to perilesional injections. The perilesional component of this hybrid injection technique maintains the ability to visualize internal mammary and extra-axillary SN. Even more importantly, these "hotter" nodes have significant implications for morbidity reduction, the main goal of sentinel lymph node biopsy in itself.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We set out to measure the reduction in exposure attained by using a weak 57Co sheet source with optimal energy windows. METHODS Two groups of 10 lymphoscintigraphy studies were analyzed. Group 1 consisted of 10 studies obtained with a stronger source of 57Co, 59 MBq (1.6 mCi) at the time of data acquisition, with transmission images acquired at 3 energy windows of 115-129, 130-134, and 135-150 keV. Group 2 consisted of 10 studies with a weaker sheet source of 57Co, 11 MBq (0.3 mCi). Transmission images were acquired at 3 energy windows of 112-132, 130-134, and 135-150 keV. Same-sized regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn on the patient's torso (PT) and on the nonattenuated image of the transmission source itself (TS), all 1-min images. The counts in each ROI obtained over 1 min and the ratios between the TS ROI and the PT ROI were calculated for all of the energies. Dosimetry calculations based on measured exposure rates and the activity of the sheet sources were used to calculate the patient equivalent dose at 30 cm. RESULTS For the 57Co energy window, group 1 had an average ROI count of 1,955 in the TS region and 135 counts in the PT region. The average ratio of TS/PT was 15.4. Similarly, group 2 had an average ROI count of 646.4 in the TS region and 91.2 counts in the PT region. The average ratio of TS/PT was 8.6. The relative "outlining performance," when comparing the 57Co and 99mTc windows, showed an average improvement when using the 57Co window of 4.4 and 5.8 times for group 1 and group 2, respectively (TS/PT at 57Co window)/(TS/PT at 99mTc window). Estimates of the patient equivalent dose per study were 2.30 microSv for the stronger 57Co flood source and 0.46 microSv for the weaker 57Co flood source, a 5-fold reduction in equivalent dose. Technologists received less than half of the above doses. CONCLUSION Use of expanded, separate energy windows optimized for the primary 122-keV photon of 57Co greatly improves transmission scan image quality compared with the standard 140-keV 99mTc windows used for the delineation of the sentinel node. This markedly reduces exposure for all, by allowing the use of a weaker source, and can save time.

Abstract
Using cotyledon explants excised from seedlings germinated in vitro, an efficient plant regeneration system via organogenesis was established for bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.). Maximum shoot regeneration was obtained when the proximal parts of cotyledons from 4-day-old seedlings were cultured on MS medium with 3 mg/l BA and 0.5 mg/l AgNO(3) under a 16-h photoperiod. After 3-4 weeks of culture, 21.9-80.7% of explants from the five cultivars regenerated shoots. Adventitious shoots were successfully rooted on a half-strength MS medium with 0.1 mg/l IAA for 2-3 weeks. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that most of the regenerated plants derived from culture on medium with AgNO(3) were diploid.

Abstract
Plutonium in wet and dry deposition samples collected monthly at the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), Daejeon, Korea was determined during the period from January 2000 to August 2000. Monthly 239,240Pu deposition in Korea showed a maximum in the spring season (March to May), which was several times greater than that in Japan and corresponds to a seasonal cycle of soil dust fallout originating from the East Asian arid areas. The trajectory analysis of dust storms suggests that 239,240Pu deposition in Korea in spring is originating from plutonium-bearing surface soil particles from the East Asian arid areas. A significant part of the 239,240Pu deposition in spring in Korea is attributable to dry deposition.
