Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the current legislation and trends in terminations of pregnancy in the European Union (EU). DESIGN Data were collected on legislation and statistics for terminations of pregnancy. SETTING Population-based statistics from the EU member states. POPULATION Women in reproductive age in the 27 EU member states. METHODS Information on legislation was collected for all 27 EU member states. Statistical information until 2008 was compiled from international (n = 24) and national sources (n = 17). Statistical data were not available for Austria, Cyprus and Luxembourg. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES Terminations of pregnancy per 1000 women aged 15-49 years. RESULTS Ireland, Malta and Poland have restrictive legislation. Luxembourg permits termination of pregnancy on physical and mental health indications; Cyprus, Finland, and the UK further include socio-economic indications. In all other EU member states termination of pregnancy can be performed in early pregnancy on a women's request. In general, the rates of termination of pregnancy have declined in recent years. In total, 10.3 terminations were reported per 1000 women aged 15-49 years in the EU in 2008. The rate was 12.3/1000 for countries requiring a legal indication for termination, and 11.0/1000 for countries allowing termination on request. Northern Europe (10.9/1000) and Central and Eastern Europe (10.8/1000) had higher rates than Southern Europe (8.9/1000). Northern Europe, however, had substantially higher rates of termination of pregnancy among teenagers. CONCLUSION A more consistent and coherent reporting of terminations of pregnancy is needed in the EU. The large variation of termination rates between countries suggests that termination of pregnancy rates may be reduced in some countries without restricting women's access to termination. Sexual education and provision of access to reliable and affordable contraception are essential to achieve low rates of termination of pregnancy.

Abstract
ABSTRACTStructural colors were obtained by the deposition of plant cell walls biopolymers films on reflective support. Multilayered xyloglucan(XG)/cellulose nanocrystals(CN) thin films were obtained by spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly while arabinoxylan (AX) thin films were elaborated via the spin-coating of AX/melamine formaldehyde resin followed by a cross-linking step. The effects of aqueous solutions on the stability of the structural colors were evaluated. The films were subsequently used to detect cellulase and xylanase activities by the change in the colors due to the film degradation. This enzymatic assay method appeared to be about 150 more sensitive that a standard method. Moreover due its simplicity, the method could be used to detect other biomass-hydrolyzing enzymes and more generally for other heterocatalytic degradations of solid polymer layers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Initiating warfarin is challenging in frail elderly patients because of low-dose requirements and interindividual variability. OBJECTIVES We investigated whether incorporating VKORC1 and CYP2C9 genotype information in different models helped to predict the warfarin maintenance dose when added to clinical data and INR values at baseline (Day 0), and during warfarin induction. PATIENTS We prospectively enrolled 187 elderly inpatients (mean age, 85.6 years), all starting on warfarin using the same 'geriatric dosing-algorithm' based on the INR value measured on the day after three 4-mg warfarin doses (INR(3)) and on INR(6 ± 1). RESULTS On Day 0, the clinical model failed to accurately predict the maintenance dose (R(2) < 0.10). Adding the VKORC1 and CYP2C9 genotypes to the model increased R(2) to 0.31. On Day 3, the INR(3) value was the strongest predictor, completely embedding the VKORC1 genotype, whereas the CYP2C9 genotype remained a significant predictor (model- R(2) 0.55). On Day 6 ± 1, none of the genotypes predicted the maintenance dose. Finally, the simple 'geriatric dosing-algorithm' was the most accurate algorithm on Day 3 (R(2) 0.77) and Day 6 (R(2) 0.81), under-estimating (≥ 1 mg) and over-estimating the dose (≥ 1 mg) in fewer than 10% and 2% of patients, respectively. Clinical models and the 'geriatric dosing-algorithm' were validated on an independent sample. CONCLUSIONS Before starting warfarin therapy, the VKORC1 genotype is the best predictor of the maintenance dose. Once treatment is started using induction doses tailored for elderly patients, the contribution of VKORC1 and CYP2C9 genotypes in dose refinement is negligible compared with two INR values measured during the first week of treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the expanded range of contraceptive options and the fact that the first acts of intercourse are well protected, abortion rates among young women in France have increased in the last 15 years. These contraceptive failures could result from the lower effectiveness of the condom compared with the pill, and/or the occurrence of contraceptive gaps when switching from the condom to the pill. Adding to the existing literature, this paper explores the conditions by which women and men discontinue using the condom. METHODS The study sample was comprised of 1552 men and 1849 women under the age of 30, who participated in the National Survey on Sexual Health in France. Respondents answered questions on contraceptive use, duration of condom use, condom discontinuation and the switch to another method of contraception at the time of condom discontinuation in the context of their first and last sexual relationships. RESULTS Condoms, used by a large majority of respondents during the first acts of intercourse, were rapidly discontinued in favor of other methods, particular the pill, for continuing relationships. However, one in ten respondents (women and men alike) had unprotected intercourse after condom discontinuation, when condom use was discontinued in the first trimester of their relationship. Abortions were more frequent among respondents who reported they did not use a condom at the start of a relationship or among women who did not switch to another form of contraception after discontinuing condom use. CONCLUSION While condoms are widely used during the first acts of intercourse, the rising abortion rates among young people suggests frequent contraceptive failures, which partly result from unprotected intercourse following condom discontinuation. These results question the dichotomy between HIV campaigns based on condom use and campaigns to reduce unintended pregnancies, which promote use of other forms of contraception, such as the pill. To reduce the incidence of unprotected intercourse, it would be important to promote the use of condoms at sexual debut, both as a contraceptive and preventive method against STIs, and provide counseling about all available contraceptive options, including the use of emergency contraception as a backup option in case of errors of use of the condom.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study explores the current patterns of reproductive health service use among young women in the USA and the changing influence of socio-demographic factors on the types of services used over time. METHODS The study population, drawn from the two last cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth, consists of women aged 15-24 (n = 2543 in 1995, n = 2157 in 2002). We examined trends in use of 'contraceptive services' and 'other reproductive health services for preventive care' and tested for changes in the patterns of use of these services over time. Logistic regression models were used to further clarify the factors associated with the use of the two types of services in 2002. RESULTS Results show no difference in the overall use of reproductive health services in the past year but did reveal changes in the type of service sought. Use of services for contraception increased by 10 percentage points (39.3% in 1995 to 49.7% in 2002, P < 0.001), although the use of other services remained stable (53.2% in 1995, 50.2% in 2002, P = 0.14). The patterns of use varied over time, exhibiting growing social disparities. In 2002, the use of contraceptive services depended on women's age, number of partners, personal and mother's level of education, and menstrual problems. The use of other reproductive health services for preventive care varied across women's socio-economic background. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates increasing social differentials in the use of reproductive health services for preventive care among young women in the USA between 1995 and 2002, a finding which calls for careful monitoring in the context of limited resources.
