Abstract
Electric switching of reflection resonances at near-IR spectral range is experimentally demonstrated in a reflective metamaterial twisted nematic liquid crystal cell. Reflective metamaterial composed of nano-sized double-split ring resonator aperture is fabricated by a focused ion beam milling. Two-fold rotational symmetry of double-split ring resonators allows for two orthogonal polarization-dependent reflection resonances in the reflective metamaterial. With an external voltage of 10V across 12μm cell gap, a full switching is achieved between two reflection resonances. Dynamic measurements show the time constants of switch-on and switch-off are in the order of 100ms and 10ms, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the relationship between obesity, diabetes, and survival in a large cohort of breast cancer patients receiving modern chemotherapy and endocrine therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS We identified 6342 patients with stage I-III breast cancer treated between 1996 and 2005. Patients were evaluated according to body mass index (BMI) category and diabetes status. RESULTS In a multivariate model adjusted for body mass index, diabetes, medical comorbidities, patient- and tumor-related variables, and adjuvant therapies, relative to the normal weight, hazard ratios (HRs) for recurrence-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) for the overweight were 1.18 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.36], 1.20 (95% CI 1.00-1.42), and 1.21 (95% CI 0.98-1.48), respectively. HRs for RFS, OS, and BCSS for the obese were 1.13 (95% CI 0.98-1.31), 1.24 (95% CI 1.04-1.48), and 1.23 (95% CI 1.00-1.52), respectively. Subset analyses showed these differences were significant for the ER-positive, but not ER-negative or HER2-positive, groups. Relative to nondiabetics, HRs for diabetics for RFS, OS, and BCSS were 1.21 (95% CI 0.98-1.49), 1.39 (95% CI 1.10-1.77), and 1.04 (95% CI 0.75-1.45), respectively. CONCLUSIONS In patients receiving modern adjuvant therapies, obesity has a negative impact on RFS, OS, and BCSS; and diabetes has a negative impact on RFS and OS. Control of both may be important to improving survival in obese and diabetic breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Delayed post-hypoxic leucoencephalopathy is a demyelinating syndrome characterized by acute onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms including parkinsonism or akinetic mutism that occurs days to weeks after recovery from cerebral hypo-oxygenation. We encountered a patient who presented with an akinetic mute state late after cervical cord injury without a definite hypoxic event.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the effects of the abutment types and dynamic loading on the stability of implant prostheses with three types of implant abutments prepared using different fabrication methods by measuring removal torque both before and after dynamic loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three groups of abutments were produced using different types of fabrication methods; stock abutment, gold cast abutment, and CAD/CAM custom abutment. A customized jig was fabricated to apply the load at 30° to the long axis. The implant fixtures were fixed to the jig, and connected to the abutments with a 30 Ncm tightening torque. A sine curved dynamic load was applied for 105 cycles between 25 and 250 N at 14 Hz. Removal torque before loading and after loading were evaluated. The SPSS was used for statistical analysis of the results. A Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to compare screw loosening between the abutment systems. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to compare screw loosening between before and after loading in each group (α=0.05). RESULTS Removal torque value before loading and after loading was the highest in stock abutment, which was then followed by gold cast abutment and CAD/CAM custom abutment, but there were no significant differences. CONCLUSION The abutment types did not have a significant influence on short term screw loosening. On the other hand, after 105 cycles dynamic loading, CAD/CAM custom abutment affected the initial screw loosening, but stock abutment and gold cast abutment did not.

Abstract
By focused ion beam milling, we fabricated near-IR reflective metamaterials consisting of nano-aperture arrays. Optimum parameters of ion beam current and accelerating voltage in the fabrication process are obtained. Nano-apertures constituting reflective metamaterial are successfully milled, and possess a reflective resonance in the near-IR spectral range. With a double-split-ring resonator structure for the nano-aperture, the intensity reflection at resonance is rendered polarization dependent. It is found that the point group symmetry of the nano-aperture array determines the amount of anisotropy in the intensity reflection. Finite-difference time-domain simulation was adopted to identify details of nano-aperture metastructures transferred from nano-aperture patterns by the focused ion beam milling.

Abstract
THz metamaterials are employed to examine changes in the meta-resonances when two anisotropic organic materials, liquid crystal and carbon nanotubes, are placed on top of metamaterials. In both anisotropic double split-ring resonators and isotropic four-fold symmetric split-ring resonators, anisotropic interactions between the electric field and organic materials are enhanced in the vicinity of meta-resonances. In liquid crystal, meta-resonance frequency shift is observed with the magneto-optical coupling giving rise to the largest anisotropic shift. In carbon nanotube, meta-resonance absorptions, parallel and perpendicular to nanotube direction, experience different amount of broadening of Lorentzian oscillator of meta-resonance. Investigation reported here opens the application of metamaterials as a sensor for anisotropic materials.

Abstract
The ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 regions of 33 accessions belonging to 16 species and five natural and garden interspecific hybrids of the genus Paeonia L. were sequenced. Chromatograms of the peony hybrids demonstrated the presence of the signals, corresponding to two different nucleotides at the positions differing in the parents, indicating that in the hybrids, no rDNA isogenization usually occurred, and they preserved rDNA of both parents. Analysis of these polymorphic sites (PS) showed that P. x majkoae was interspecific hybrid between P. tenuifolia and P. caucasica. The ITS of P. hybrida differs from ITS of P. x majkoae in 19 mutations. Because of this, P. x majkoae is definitely not synonymous to P. hybrida. Comparative analysis of ITS 1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 showed that species diversity in section Paeonia was based on recombination as a result of intraspecific hybridization of three haplotype families. Specifically, haplotypes A, typical of the P. tenuifolia and P. anomala genomes, haplotypes B, typical of P. mlokosewitschii and P. obovata, and haplotypes of family C, currently represented in rDNA of diploid and tetraploid forms of some Caucasian and Mediterranean species. The ITS regions many diploid peonies contain no dimorphic sites, while P. oreogeton, P. cambessedesii, P. rhodia, and P. daurica carry from ten to 17 PS, and supposed to be the interspecific hybrids. Most of the tetraploid peonies contain from six to 18 PS in the ITS regions. These are alloploids with one of the parental genomes similar to that of P. mlokosewitschii (B1), or P. obovata (B3). The second parental genome in P. banatica, P. peregrina, and P. russii is represented by the genome, close to that of P. tenuifolia (A). P. macrophylla, P. mascula, P. coriacea, P. wittmanniana, and P. tomentosa carry genome of series B and genome of series C, which slightly resembles genome A.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We previously reported the partial effectiveness of imatinib (also known as STI571, Glivec, or Gleevec) on anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) cells. Imatinib is a selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor that has been used for various types of cancer treatments. Recently, several reports have demonstrated that imatinib enhanced the sensitivity of cancer cells to other anticancer drugs. In this study, therefore, we investigated whether imatinib enhances the antitumor activity of docetaxel in ATC cells. METHODS Two ATC cell lines, FRO and KTC-2, were treated with imatinib and/or docetaxel. Cell survival assay and flow cytometry for annexin V were used to assess the induction of apoptosis. Changes of pro- and antiapoptotic factors were determined by Western blot. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activity was measured by DNA-binding assay. Tumor growth was also investigated in vivo. RESULTS The combined treatment significantly enhanced apoptosis compared with single treatment. ATC cells themselves expressed high levels of antiapoptotic factors, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP), and survivin. The treatment with docetaxel alone further increased their expressions; however, the combined treatment blocked the inductions. Although imatinib alone had no effect on NF-κB background levels, combined treatment significantly suppressed the docetaxel-induced NF-κB activation. Further, the combined administration of the drugs also showed significantly greater inhibitory effect on tumor growth in mice xenograft model. CONCLUSIONS Imatinib enhanced antitumor activity of docetaxel in ATC cells. Docetaxel seemed to induce both pro- and antiapoptotic signaling pathways in ATC cells, and imatinib blocked the antiapoptotic signal. Thus, docetaxel combined with imatinib emerges as an attractive strategy for the treatment of ATC.

Abstract
Abstract
Metastatic spread is the major cause of death from breast cancer. We previously showed that H-Ras, but not N-Ras, induces invasive/migratory phenotypes of MCF10A human breast epithelial cells, while both H-Ras and N-Ras induce proliferation/transformation. Here, we identified flotillin-1 as an H-Ras-induced lipid raft protein through comparative proteome profiling of lipid raft proteins. Flotillin-1 interacts with H-Ras in lipid raft at a higher affinity than with N-Ras. Small interfering RNA(siRNA)-mediated flotillin-1 knockdown significantly reduced H-Ras activation and H-Ras-mediated motility/invasion in MCF10A cells engineered to express active H-Ras as well as in Hs578T breast carcinoma and T24 bladder carcinoma cells that express endogenous active mutant of H-Ras. These results suggest a positive signal amplification loop between flotillin-1 and H-Ras for the invasive signaling program. Flotillin-1 was crucial for the activation of the Ras-GRF1 exchange factor and its interaction with H-Ras in lipid rafts. Using a xenograft tumor model, we show that knockdown of flotillin-1 reduces the tumor growth in vivo. Importantly, tissue microarrays of 289 breast cancer patients revealed that flotillin-1 expression in the plasma membrane positively correlates with HER2/neu expression(p<0.001) and high histologic grade(p=0.014). Although infrequent, the membranous flotillin-1 expression is significantly associated with poor disease-free survival of patients(p=0.005), suggesting the clinical importance of predicting the characteristics of a small subpopulation of malignant breast cancer. Taken together, our findings provide new insight into the molecular basis of the Ras isoform-specific signaling mechanism leading to cell invasion that depends on the lipid-based sorting platforms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The eradication rates following standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection are declining worldwide. Recent studies have shown that sequential therapy for H. pylori infection yields high cure rates. AIM To compare the efficacy and tolerability of a sequential regimen as first-line treatment of H. pylori infection with a standard triple regimen. METHODS A total of 348 naïve H. pylori-infected patients from six hospitals in Korea were assigned randomly to standard triple or sequential therapy groups. Standard triple therapy consisted of 20 mg of rabeprazole, 1 g of amoxicillin and 500 mg of clarithromycin, twice daily for 7 days. Sequential therapy consisted of a 5-day dual therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole and 1 g of amoxicillin, twice daily) followed by a 5-day triple therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole, 500 mg of clarithromycin, and 500 mg of metronidazole, twice daily). RESULTS The intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) eradication rates were 62.2% (95% CI 54.8-69.6%) and 76.0% (95% CI 68.5-83.5%) in the standard triple group, and 77.8% (95% CI 71.4-84.2%) and 87.9% (95% CI 82.3-93.5%) in the sequential group, respectively. The eradication rate was significantly higher in the sequential group compared with the standard triple group in both the ITT and PP populations (P = 0.002 and P = 0.013 respectively), whereas the incidence of adverse events was similar. CONCLUSIONS Ten-day sequential therapy is more effective and equally tolerated for eradication of H. pylori infection compared with standard triple therapy. Sequential therapy may have a role as first-line treatment for H. pylori infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic role of phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (pAMPK) in surgically resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Immunohistochemical staining of pAMPK was carried out on tissue microarrays containing 463 samples obtained from patients with NSCLC and correlated with clinicopathological characteristics and survival. RESULTS pAMPK expression levels were significantly higher in never smokers versus former smokers versus current smokers (P=0.045). A positive pAMPK expression was associated with increased overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) (P=0.0009 and P=0.0007, respectively). OS and RFS were statistically superior in pAMPK-positive than in pAMPK-negative patients with adenocarcinoma (ADC; median OS: 5.6 and 4.2 years, respectively, P=0.0001; median RFS: 5.0 and 2.4 years, respectively, P=0.001), whereas they were similar in those patients with squamous cell carcinoma. Multivariate analysis confirmed that pAMPK positivity was associated with OS [hazard ratio (HR)=0.574, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.418-0.789, P=0.0006) and RFS (HR=0.608, 95% CI 0.459-0.807, and P=0.0006), independent of clinical covariates. CONCLUSIONS High pAMPK expression levels are associated with increased survival in patients with NSCLC, especially those with ADC. Our results support further evaluation of AMP-activated protein kinase as a potential prognostic and therapeutic target for lung cancer.

Randomised clinical trial: a comparative study of 10-day sequential therapy with 7-day standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection in naïve patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND The eradication rates following standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection are declining worldwide. Recent studies have shown that sequential therapy for H. pylori infection yields high cure rates. AIM To compare the efficacy and tolerability of a sequential regimen as first-line treatment of H. pylori infection with a standard triple regimen. METHODS A total of 348 naïve H. pylori-infected patients from six hospitals in Korea were assigned randomly to standard triple or sequential therapy groups. Standard triple therapy consisted of 20 mg of rabeprazole, 1 g of amoxicillin and 500 mg of clarithromycin, twice daily for 7 days. Sequential therapy consisted of a 5-day dual therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole and 1 g of amoxicillin, twice daily) followed by a 5-day triple therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole, 500 mg of clarithromycin, and 500 mg of metronidazole, twice daily). RESULTS The intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) eradication rates were 62.2% (95% CI 54.8-69.6%) and 76.0% (95% CI 68.5-83.5%) in the standard triple group, and 77.8% (95% CI 71.4-84.2%) and 87.9% (95% CI 82.3-93.5%) in the sequential group, respectively. The eradication rate was significantly higher in the sequential group compared with the standard triple group in both the ITT and PP populations (P = 0.002 and P = 0.013 respectively), whereas the incidence of adverse events was similar. CONCLUSIONS Ten-day sequential therapy is more effective and equally tolerated for eradication of H. pylori infection compared with standard triple therapy. Sequential therapy may have a role as first-line treatment for H. pylori infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE DTI is widely used for the evaluation of white matter integrity in various neurologic diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in white matter integrity by using DTI in NAWM of patients with MMD and to evaluate the correlation between diffusion and perfusion characteristics through an interhemispheric comparison. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 20 primary MMD patients with asymmetric disease stage and 20 age-matched healthy controls. FA(CS) and ADC(CS) values of bilateral centrum semiovale were measured by using region of interest analysis. Mean FA(CS) and ADC(CS) were compared between patient and control groups by unpaired t test. Interhemispheric differences in FA(CS) and ADC(CS) were assessed and compared between the H-TTP(delayed) and the H-TTP(shorter) by using paired t test. AIs also were assessed to verify interhemispheric differences. RESULTS The patient group showed a significantly lower mean FA(CS) and a higher mean ADC(CS) value than the control group. In the patient group, the H-TTP(delayed) had a significantly lower FA(CS) and higher ADC(CS) value than the H-TTP(shorter). Both AI(FA) and AI(ADC) were significantly higher in the patient compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS DTI can describe subtle changes in white matter integrity in NAWM of patients with primary MMD that are not detected by conventional MR imaging. In addition, diffusion characteristics are well correlated with perfusion characteristics. We believe that DTI is a useful ancillary tool to evaluate patients with MMD.

Abstract
The G12 subfamily of the heterotrimeric G proteins, Galpha12 and Galpha13, has been implicated as an important signaling component in various cellular processes including oncogenesis and cells invasion. Our previous report showed that the expression of an activated mutant of Galpha12 (Galpha12QL) or Galpha13 (Galpha13QL) leads to cell invasion in MCF10A human breast epithelial cells. The present study aimed to investigate the role of Galpha12 and Galpha13 in the malignant phenotypic conversion of NIH3T3 mouse fibroblast cells. Galpha12QL and Galpha13QL induced an invasive phenotype in NIH3T3 cells. In addition, the activation of Galpha12 and Galpha13 upregulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 while MMP-9 was not affected by either Galpha12QL or Galpha13QL. Using female NOD/SCID mice injected with NIH3T3 cells stably expressing Galpha12QL, we provided in vivo confirmation of Galpha12-mediated MMP-2 upregulation. Taken together, this study elucidated the role of Galpha12/13 in regulating malignant phenotypic conversion of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells, validating the role of Galphal2/13 in tumorigenesis.
