Abstract
OBJECTIVE The psychometric properties of the Spanish version of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) were examined in a psychiatric population. METHOD Internal consistency, factor structure and concurrent validity were studied in a sample of 416 psychiatric patients. RESULTS A moderate to high internal consistency for all personality dimensions was found, except for Persistence. A confirmatory factor analysis of the TCI performed at the subscale level revealed an uncertain factor structure. However, when analysed separately, both the 11 temperament subscales (plus Persistence) and the 13 character subscales shaped four and three factors, respectively, in agreement with the biosocial model of personality. Finally, concurrent validity analyses were conducted using EPQ, SPSR and SSS questionnaires showing results consistent with theory. CONCLUSION The Spanish version of the TCI is a reliable and valid instrument, although the Persistence dimension might require further revision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess genotypic resistance mutations in patients with virological failure with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) METHODS: Genotyping of reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease (PRO) HIV-1 genes were carried out in 33 adherent patients failing on HAART. RESULTS Resistance mutations were found in 32 of the 33; 27 of them (81.8%) being primary mutations: 26 (78.8%) in the RT gene and 60 (60.6%) in the PRO gene. Overall, 66.6% had genotypic resistance to two drugs and 60.6% showed resistance to drugs belonging to the two main classes of antiretroviral drugs. At the time of treatment failure, 72.7% had on their therapeutic regimen one antiretroviral drug to which they had resistance mutations, 48.5% had genotypic resistance to two drugs of the therapeutic regimen and 21.2% to three drugs. CONCLUSIONS Most adherent patients failing on HAART carry drug resistant genotypes. These patients may constitute a reservoir of multidrug resistant HIV that may limit treatment options in the future.

Abstract
Composition of the sterol fraction, fatty acid, acidity, and the sensorial evaluation of virgin olive oils were studied in two eastern Spanish varieties grown and processed under the same conditions. Fruits were stored at 5 degrees C and ambient temperature for different times. During fruit storage, there was no significant variation (P = 0.05) in fatty acid composition. However, the sterol composition of the oil varied markedly (in particular, there was an increase in stigmasterol), acidity increased, and there was a very significant decrease in sensorial quality. The stigmasterol content presented a high correlation with the acidity and sensory evaluation (P < 10(-)(6)). The total sterol content increased gradually with olive storage time. Oils with stigmasterol greater than campesterol are graded to a low level (lampant). It is of interest that sensorial quality is revealed by stigmasterol content, a fact unknown until now.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to define the pattern of neopterin and ADA isoenzymes in liver cirrhosis. A total of 117 patients with liver cirrhosis were included. Serum levels of ADA were assayed in the presence and absence of a specific inhibitor for ADA1. Serum neopterin was measured using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The grade of liver insufficiency was assessed according to the Child-Pugh classification and the monoethylglycinexylidide test. Serum ADA, ADA1, ADA2 and neopterin were higher in cirrhotic patients than in control subjects. A stepwise increase in serum ADA level was observed with increasing severity of liver cirrhosis. The probability of ADA2 being greater than the mean was approximately 2.5 times higher (2.48, CI 95%: 1.36-4.52) in patients with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection than in those patients with cirrhosis of a different etiology. No correlation was found between ADA2 and neopterin. Our data show that liver insufficiency and HCV infection increase the serum levels of ADA and its major isoenzyme ADA2. Furthermore, ADA isoenzyme determination adds no value to total ADA value. The absence of a correlation between ADA2 and neopterin suggests that different physiologic processes are involved in their increase.

Abstract
Phenolic and orthodiphenolic compounds together with carotenoids, tocopherols, pigments, and fatty acids were tested for their antioxidant effect in 79 samples of virgin olive oils cv. Picual and Hojiblanca. A linear regression based on the oleic/linoleic ratio and the contents of phenols and tocopherols showed a good correlation (adjusted-R(2) = 0.91) with the stability measured by Rancimat, later verified with an external text set (adjusted-R(2) = 0.95). A tentative study on the percentage contribution of each chemical variable to stability is discussed. The contribution of phenolic and orthodiphenolic compounds was around 51%, the composition of fatty acids 24%, and in less percentage alpha-tocopherol, carotenoids, and chlorophylls. No effect, or very little, was shown by beta- and gamma-tocopherols.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Spinal tumours in infancy are an infrequent oncological disorder. The clinical features, usually of insidious onset, are alterations in gait and a painful spine. OBJECTIVE To analyze the different histological types of spinal tumours seen in infancy and their form of presentation in our series. PATIENTS AND METHODS We reviewed the clinical histories of 48 patients with intraspinal tumours, aged under 15 years, whose reports of histological diagnosis had been sent to our centre. RESULTS Of the patients studied, 17 were girls (35.4%) and 31 boys (64.6%) with an average age of 7.7 years. The histological diagnoses made most frequently were astrocytomas (22.9%) and lipomas (18.8%) followed by metastases (12.5%), ependymomas (8.3%) and Edwing's sarcoma (8.3%). The clinical features were present prior to diagnosis for between 1 and 6 months in 13 patients, and for less than one month in 9 patients. The presenting symptoms were alterations in gait and back pain in most patients. Exploratory tests were related to the involvement of long vias and second motor-neurone lesions. The main topographical findings were: in the axial plane the lesions were extradural (23 patients) and in the sagittal plane there was dorsal involvement (34 patients). CONCLUSIONS Insidious, progressive alterations in gait together with continuous, nocturnal back pain are valuable data when a serious spinal disorder is to be suspected. Early diagnosis should be based on neuroimaging tests, essentially MR, in the patients in whom spinal cord involvement is considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with inactive systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and elevated high affinity double-stranded anti-DNA antibodies (anti-dsDNA), measured using Farr technique, would have a risk of relapse that fluctuates between 40 to 80% according to different series. AIM To study the association between anti-dsDNA levels measured using Farr technique and disease activity and their predictive capacity for relapses. MATERIAL AND METHODS Anti-dsDNA antibodies were measured according to Farr method in 60 healthy subjects, 69 patients with other connective tissue diseases and in 120 patients with SLE. Farr positive were considered those individuals with anti-dsDNA levels over 10.4 IU/ml. Disease activity, assessed using MEX-SLEDAI score was related with anti-dsDNA levels in 101 patients. Forty seven patients with inactive disease were followed for 17 +/- 14 months. RESULTS Anti-dsDNA levels were 3 +/- 2.5 IU/ml (range 1-26) in subjects without LED, and 127 +/- 500 IU/ml (range 1-5280) in patients with LED. Sixty subjects had an active SLE and 43 (72%) were Farr positive; in 41 the disease was inactive and 13 (32%) were Farr positive (p < 0.001), OR 5.45. Twelve of the 47 followed patients had a relapse and 10 (83%) were Farr positive. Of those that did not have a relapse, 13 (37%) were Farr positive (p < 0.02, RR 5.22). Six of 15 patients that were followed for more than on year (40%), were Farr positive. CONCLUSIONS Elevated anti-dsDNA antibodies measured using Farr technique in patients with inactive generalised lupus erythematosus, predicted the risk of relapse. However less than half of patients with inactive disease and elevated Farr relapsed in a period of one year. The need to treat patients with inactive SLE and positive Farr should therefore be considered debatable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retrospective study of the Salmonella sp. strains and human salmonellosis episodes registered in the Public Health Laboratory of the Principado de Asturias, Spain, over the seven year period 1990-1996. MATERIAL AND METHODS All strains were serotyped; strains of serotypes Typhi and Typhimurium were also phage typed. The strains were grouped according to: sample of origin, age group; season of the year; time distribution, and epidemiological presentation (sporadic episode or outbreak). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A total of 3,255 Salmonella isolates were registered and conserved in the period under study. They were adscribed to 45 serotypes, being Enteritidis, Typhimurium, Virchow and Hadar (57.1, 26.6, 4.5 and 2%, respectively) the most frequent. 3,193 isolates were collected from clinical samples (corresponding to 3,067 patients), 32 from environmental water or sewage, 28 from food and 2 from animal stools. Relevant epidemiological findings were: the most affected age group was children under 4 years old (32.3%), the season with highest incidence was the summer. The most frequent clinical presentation was the sporadic episode of gastroenteritis (97%). Seventy five outbreaks (22 communitary and 53 family) were registered, being associated with six serotypes: Enteritidis (76%), Typhimurium, Virchow, Hadar, Infantis and Coehl.

Abstract
The initial stability of virgin olive oil depends on various factors, among which are the variety and the degree of fruit ripeness. The former, which genetically determines the composition of the olive and its oil, also marks, to some extent, its stability. However, oil stability changes as the olive ripens, so it is obvious that the degree of ripeness is an important factor. The oils were obtained by the Abencor system. Acidity, peroxide index, UV absorption at 232 and 270 nm, sensory analysis, fatty acid composition, tocopherols, phenolic compounds, orthodiphenolic compounds, sterols, pigments, and oxidative stability were determined, and the results were analyzed statistically. During ripening there was a decrease in all of the parameters studied except linoleic acid, Delta-5-avenasterol, and oil content, which increased. Virgin oils showed very good correlation between stability and the concentrations of total phenols, o-diphenols, tocopherols, chlorophyll pigments and carotenoids, linoleic and linolenic acids, total sterols, beta-sitosterol, and Delta-5-avenasterol.

Abstract
The curvature patterns of seven satellite DNAs taken from beetles belonging to the family Tenebrionidae (Coleoptera) were modelled utilising a number of computer programs that describe and plot the curvature profiles of DNA. The theoretical analysis agreed with the experimentally observed curvature of most of these satellite DNAs, and its absence in Tribolium freemani and Tenebrio obscurus satellite I. In many cases, the tenebrionid satellite DNAs lack periodically repeated runs of phased-A-tracts, yet they represent a clear example of curved DNA. The macroscopic curvature of satellites from these closely related organisms confirmed that other sequence elements must be participating in the bending of these DNAs. Our modelling approaches are discussed, together with previous experimental results, in terms of the role played by DNA curvature in the organisation of satellite DNA and the tight compacting of heterochromatin.

Abstract
Regional lymphadenectomy in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma in stages I-U AJC/UICC has not demonstrated improvement either in loco-regional control or in survival. The results of the lymphatic mapping technique have demonstrated that on identifying the sentinel node, the group of patients with microscopic nodal metastases can be selected for regional treatment. We performed the intraoperative lymphatic mapping technique with 1 ml of blue patent V by intradermal injection just around the primary melanoma; after injecting the dye we incised the nodal skin region, identifying the sentinel node by its blue color. The histologic examination, by frozen section of this node, determines whether or not to proceed with a formal lymphadenectomy. We calculated the sensitivity of the dye for the identification of the sentinel node and the Pearson's test was performed between the intraoperative histologic study and the definite pathological result. Thirty one lymphatic mappings were performed in 29 patients with stages I-II malignant cutaneous melanoma. The sentinel node was found in 26/31 explored lymphatic zones, and in 5, it was not found, sensitivity of 84%; 23/26 sentinel nodes were negative and only 3/26 were metastatic in frozen section. The Pearson's test result was 0.78 with a predictive value of 92%. The blue patent V intraoperative lymphatic mapping technique in patients with malignant cutaneous melanoma provided a great sensitivity to identify the sentinel node and allows the identification of patients with high risk of microscopic nodal metastases.
