A case of gastric teratoma

This paper reports a case of gastric teratoma in a 3-mth-old boy, with macroscopic and microscopic observations. Forty-five instances of gastric teratoma, including the present case, have been reported.

[Correlations between the processes of cell differentiation and development of blood vessels in the (chick embryo) adenohypohhysis]

Utilizing semi-thin and, respectively, thick sections after indian ink injections, we have analyzed morphohistogenesis and vessel development in the adenohypophysis of chick embryos from the 4th to the 19th incubation day. Our preliminary results indicate that a close correlation exists between cellular differentiation and vasculogenesis. Vessels begin to enter the gland only at the 6th day when the first endocellular granules become detectable, and, from the 10th day, they markedly increase in number and size, gradually acquiring a peculiar sinusoidal arrangement around cellular groups, as cell differentiation further progresses.

[Gardner's syndrome in familial popyposis: clinical contribution and etiopathogenetic, therapeutic and prognostic considerations]

Starting from one case of Gardner's syndrome of their own observation, and in light of Watne's results, the authors argue that in the syndrome just named--and in familial polyposis in a broader sense--genetic factors do not play a predominant role; rather, polyps seem to result from the prolonged action of noxious agents. At any rate, said action can be neutralized, and possibly prevented either with a surgical modification of the distal gut or by treatment with a chemical substance identified as ascorbic acid. In view of these considerations, the authors recommend preventive medical therapy.

99mTc-pyrophosphate kinetics in man (relationship between bone uptake and mineral content)

Both the kinetics and the regional distribution of 99mTc-PPi were studied in the skeleton of healthy subjects of various ages by surface counting using a scintillation counter placed over different skeletal areas. The results were compared with bone mineral content as determined by the photonic absorption technique. Kinetic data of bone uptake were obtained by subtracting the counts measured in blood from the counts recorded over each body surface after making proportional corrections. The surface-counting patterns show a higher generalized 99mTc-PPi bone uptake in children and adolescents than in adults. The relative regional distribution of the tracer shows no difference between the two groups. The tracer accumulated more rapidly in spongy bone than in compact bone, and the fixation process was carried out during the first 30 min for both spongy and compact bone. In youths, however, higher uptake values corresponded to lower values of mineral content. The findings enable the normal surface-counting pattern to be constructed and confirm that the 99mTc-PPi uptake is related to bone metabolism; they also suggest the application of external measurements for the study of metabolic bone diseases.
