Abstract
AIM The accuracy and clinical value of circulating microRNA-21 (miR-21) were assessed as a novel diagnostic biomarker of colorectal cancer (CRC). METHOD Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library databases and grey literature (Google scholar; British Library) were searched up to 29 September 2014 for eligible studies of the association between blood-based miR-21 and a diagnosis of CRC. Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS) was employed to assess the quality of the included studies by two investigators. Stata12.0 and Meta-DiSc1.4 software were applied to test the heterogeneity using Cochran's Q test and I(2) statistics and to perform the meta-analysis. RESULTS Seven studies with 676 CRC patients and 417 controls were included in the meta-analysis. All were of high quality (QUADAS scores 12 or 13). For miR-21, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio to predict CRC were 75% [95% confidence interval (CI) 63-83%], 84% (95% CI 79-87%), 4.61 (95% CI 3.38-6.29), 0.30 (95% CI 0.20-0.46) and 16.89 (95% CI 7.56-37.73) after using a random-effects model analysis. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.86 (95% CI 0.83-0.89). CONCLUSION The results suggest that circulating miR-21 is a biomarker with moderate sensitivity and specificity for CRC.

Abstract
The effect of composted litter relative to fresh litter on leaching losses of nutrients has not been well documented. Fresh and composted broiler litter was surface-applied to bermudagrass (hay) [ (L.) Pers.] established in undisturbed soil columns based on N need of the grass in the presence or absence of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum to evaluate an approach to reduce broiler litter nutrient leaching potential. Columns were periodically leached and biomass was harvested during the 60-d experiment. Total N applied to bermudagrass from broiler litter was 320 kg ha. Gypsum was mixed with fresh and composted litter at the rate based on 20% of litter weight. For composted broiler litter, NO-N, P, K, Cu, and Zn contents in the leachate obtained from the first leaching event were 58, 50, 40, 32, and 38% less than fresh broiler litter, respectively. Significant decreases in NO-N (13%), P (53%), Cu (17%), and Zn (28%) in leachate were obtained when gypsum was mixed with fresh broiler litter. Fresh broiler litter and composted broiler litter applications increased bermudagrass growth compared with the control and gypsum significantly increased yields when mixed with broiler litter. Composted broiler litter application significantly increased N and organic C in the soil compared with fresh litter. Results demonstrate that coapplication of composted broiler litter with FGD gypsum provide the most effective management option for minimizing leaching losses of nutrients while sustaining crop productivity.

Abstract
Solenopsis invicta and Solenopsis richteri are two closely related invasive ants native to South America. Despite their similarity in biology and behavior, S. invicta is a more successful invasive species. Toxic tolerance has been found to be important to the success of some invasive species. Esterases play a crucial role in toxic tolerance of insects. Hence, we hypothesized that the more invasive S. invicta would have a higher esterase activity than S. richteri. Esterase activities were measured for workers and male and female alates of both ant species using α-naphthyl acetate and β-naphthyl acetate as substrates. Esterase activities in S. invicta were always significantly higher than those in S. richteri supporting our hypothesis. In S. invicta, male alates had the highest esterase activities followed by workers then female alates for both substrates. In S. richetri, for α-naphthyl acetate, male alates had the highest activity followed by female alates then workers, while for β-naphthyl acetate, female alates had the highest activity followed by male alates then workers. For workers, S. richteri showed significantly higher levels of variation about the mean esterase activity than S. invicta. However, S. invicta showed significantly higher levels of variation in both female and male alates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sensory belief that 'light/low tar' cigarettes are smoother can also influence the belief that 'light/low tar' cigarettes are less harmful. However, the 'light' concept is one of several factors influencing beliefs. No studies have examined the impact of the sensory belief about one's own brand of cigarettes on perceptions of harm. OBJECTIVE The current study examines whether a smoker's sensory belief that their brand is smoother is associated with the belief that their brand is less harmful and whether sensory beliefs mediate the relation between smoking a 'light/low tar' cigarette and relative perceptions of harm among smokers in China. METHODS Data are from 5209 smokers who were recruited using a stratified multistage sampling design and participated in Wave 3 of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey, a face-to-face survey of adult smokers and non-smokers in seven cities. RESULTS Smokers who agreed that their brand of cigarettes was smoother were significantly more likely to say that their brand of cigarettes was less harmful (p<0.001, OR=6.86, 95% CI 5.64 to 8.33). Mediational analyses using the bootstrapping procedure indicated that both the direct effect of 'light/low tar' cigarette smokers on the belief that their cigarettes are less harmful (b=0.24, bootstrapped bias corrected 95% CI 0.13 to 0.34, p<0.001) and the indirect effect via their belief that their cigarettes are smoother were significant (b=0.32, bootstrapped bias-corrected 95% CI 0.28 to 0.37, p<0.001), suggesting that the mediation was partial. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate the importance of implementing tobacco control policies that address the impact that cigarette design and marketing can have in capitalising on the smoker's natural associations between smoother sensations and lowered perceptions of harm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the levels of exposure to second-hand smoking (SHS) among Chinese adults living in the urban areas and their knowledge on the risks of SHS, to support for the Smoke-free policy. METHODS Data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) and the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation China Survey (ITC China Survey) was analyzed and SAS was used to calculate the rates and 95%CI. RESULTS In the two surveys, less than 40% of the respondents reported that their workplaces had completely stopped smoking. Participants who reported that they had seen people smoking at various public places with different rates, also they could reflect the levels to SHS exposure. Restaurants were the venue with the heaviest overall exposure (83.4%-95.6%), followed by the workplace (53.3%-84.0%). Exposure was low in health facilities, schools and public transport venues. In the GATS survey, 60.6% smokers and 68.5% non-smokers believed that SHS could cause lung cancer, but only one-third of the participants believed that SHS could cause heart diseases in adults. Participants in the ITC China survey reported a comparatively higher level of awareness on the harm of SHS, but only 58.2% smokers believed that SHS could cause heart diseases in adults. Overall, data from the ITC China survey showed that participants' support for a comprehensive smoke-free policy in schools, health-related facilities, government buildings and in taxi were high (over 70% ). However, the proportion of participants supporting comprehensive smoking-free policy at workplaces (50.9%-60.9%) was relatively low. CONCLUSION The proportion of indoor workplaces with complete smoking ban was low in urban areas but levels to SHS exposure were high. People's awareness of harms related to SHS and their attitude on setting up a comprehensive smoke-free workplace need to be improved.

Abstract
AIM To describe how pegylated glucose-coated gold nanoparticles (PEG-Glu-GNPs) can help improve computed tomography (CT) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS PEG-Glu-GNPs were designed for use as an imaging nanoprobe to act an effective contrast agent for both CT and PET scans. Twelve BALB/c mice were divided into two groups: mice with injected with PEG-Glu-GNPs and control mice. The mice were examined using high-resolution micro-CT at different time intervals (24 h, 7 days, and 15 days) after the injection of the particles. Greyscale density and CT attenuation values were determined to trace the excretion of the particles over time. RESULTS Tumour contours were easily distinguished from surrounding tissue in mice injected with PEG-Glu-GNPs but not controls. This distinction was still visible at 7 days, but not at 15 days post-injection. CONCLUSION Molecular imaging technology has enabled the development of a new generation of imaging probes. These sophisticated probes can visualize biological processes or enable early diagnosis of diseases in vivo. Compared to conventional CT images and PET scans, PEG-Glu-GNPs significantly improved image quality at the cellular and molecular level, which can significantly aid the early detection of cancer or cancer metastases.

Abstract
In endometriosis, stromal and epithelial cells from the endometrium form extrauterine lesions and persist in response to estrogen (E2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Stromal cells produce excessive quantities of estrogen and PGE2 in a feed-forward manner. However, it is unknown how estrogen stimulates cell proliferation and survival for the establishment and persistence of disease. Previous studies suggest that estrogen receptor-β (ERβ) is strikingly overexpressed in endometriotic stromal cells. Thus, we integrated genome-wide ERβ binding data from previously published studies in breast cells and gene expression profiles in human endometriosis and endometrial tissues (total sample number = 81) and identified Ras-like, estrogen-regulated, growth inhibitor (RERG) as an ERβ target. Estradiol potently induced RERG mRNA and protein levels in primary endometriotic stromal cells. Chromatin immunoprecipitation demonstrated E2-induced enrichment of ERβ at the RERG promoter region. PGE2 via protein kinase A phosphorylated RERG and enhanced the nuclear translocation of RERG. RERG induced the proliferation of primary endometriotic cells. Overall, we demonstrated that E2/ERβ and PGE2 integrate at RERG, leading to increased endometriotic cell proliferation and represents a novel candidate for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence suggests that among the causes which deteriorate qualitative and functional characteristics of sperm after freezing and thawing, there are those linked to decrease of sperm motility and release of various enzymes in the cells and seminal plasma. OBJECTIVE In the present study, the motility, fertilization and enzyme activity of sperm were analyzed after cryopreservation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Computer-assisted sperm motility analysis (CASA) was used to evaluate the effect of cryopreservation on sperm motility of Nibea albiflora. RESULTS The activities of total adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), creatine kinase (CK), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione reductase (GR) in fresh and frozen seminal plasma and spermatozoa were measured respectively. Cryopreservation led to a decline in the percentage of motile sperm, moreover, other parameters of sperm motion, curvilinear and straight line velocities, linearity were changed observably (p < 0.05), the fertilizing capacity of post-thaw sperm was lower than that of the fresh sperm significantly. After cryopreservation, the activities of total ATPase, CK, SDH, LDH, SOD, CAT and GSH-Px increased in seminal plasma and decreased in spermatozoa respectively, but GR activity varied contrarily, GR activity dropped in seminal plasma and increased in spermatozoa. CONCLUSION Cryopreservation had significant effects on the motility characteristics, fertilization ability and enzyme activity of the sperm of Nibea albiflora.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a chronic hepatic complication characterized by defect in arterial oxygenation induced by pulmonary vascular dilatation and vasoactive substances in the setting of chronic liver disease (CLD). This study is to investigate the abnormality of hemodynamic and vasoactive substances in hepatopulmonary syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS From September 2007 to September 2012, 58 patients with HPS in the General Surgery Department and Transplantation Center of Renji Hospital were enrolled for the case-control study. HPS patients enrolled were referred to as group H, CLD without HPS to as group C and case controls to as group N. Hemodynamic parameters of the systemic and pulmonary circulations as well as vasoactive substances in the radial and pulmonary arteries were measured in all patients. Univariate and multiple regression analysis were performed afterwards. RESULTS The mean pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary artery wedge pressure, systemic vascular resistance and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in HPS patients were significantly lower than those in CLD patients without HPS (p < 0.05). The nitrite-to-nitrate ratio (NO2-/NO3-), endothelin-1 (ET-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the radial and pulmonary arteries differed significantly among group H, group C and case controls (group N) separately (p < 0.05). The vasoactive intestinal peptide and 6-keto-prostaglandin-F1α in the radial and pulmonary arteries of group H were significantly higher than those in group N (p < 0.05). The NO2(-)/NO3(-) levels correlated negatively with PVR (r = -0.535, p < 0.05) and Endothelin-1 (r = -0.624, p < 0.05). CO (p < 0.05), CI (p < 0.05), SI (p < 0.05) and TNF-α (p < 0.05) level are considered significantly when performed with multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS The CO increases and PVR decreases in HPS patients. The abnormally elevated NO2-/NO3- level in the pulmonary circulation leads to pulmonary vasodilation. ET-1 may induce nitric oxide synthesis and correlated negatively with PVR in HPS. CO, CI, SI and TNF-α level are independent risk factors for HPS patients' survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We hypothesize that intervertebral disc (IVD) cells from distinct region respond differently to oxygen environment, and that IVD cells from patients with disc degeneration can benefit from hypoxia condition. Therefore, we aimed to determine the transcriptional response and extracellular matrix (ECM) production of nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosus (AF) cells to different oxygen tension. METHOD Human NP and AF from degenerated IVD were seeded in 3D scaffolds and subjected to varying oxygen tension (2% and 20%) for 3 weeks. Changes in ECM were evaluated using quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, histological and immunohistological analyses. RESULTS Hypoxia significantly enhances NP cells phenotype, which resulted in greater production of sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and collagen type II within the constructs and the cells expressed higher levels of genes encoding NP ECM. A significantly stronger fluorescent signal for hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1α) as also found in the NP cells under the hypoxic than normoxic condition. However, there was little effect of hypoxia on the AF cells. CONCLUSIONS The NP and AF cells respond differently to hypoxia condition on the 3D scaffold, and hypoxia could enhance NP phenotype. When used in concert with appropriate scaffold material, human NP cells from degenerated disc could be regenerated for tissue engineering application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We have developed a new thermosensitive liquid embolic agent, PIB nanogel, that can be solidified at body temperature. We thus further investigated the distribution, durability of vascular occlusion, and inflammatory reactions of PIB in embolization of the renal artery of rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS The bilateral renal arteries of 9 rabbits were first embolized with PIB at different injection rates. The distribution pattern of PIB was investigated by contact radiography and histology 1 hour after embolization. The right renal arteries of 20 rabbits were then embolized with PIB at the proper injection rate. Angiography and pathologic examination of the kidneys were performed at 1 week and 1, 2, and 3 months after embolization to evaluate the long-term outcomes. RESULTS With the injection rate increasing, PIB could reach the more distal branch of the renal artery. The proper injection rate was chosen as 0.10 mL/s due to the homogeneous distribution of PIB from the main renal artery to the precapillary level at this rate. During a 3-month follow-up observation period, no angiographic recanalization was observed. Histologically, we found no disruption of the vessel wall or subintimal bleeding, no extravasation of PIB, and no evidence of neovascularization. Moreover, there was only a mild inflammatory response, manifested by few lymphocytic and monocellular infiltration, without foreign body granuloma formation. CONCLUSIONS Embolization of the renal artery with PIB was easy and controllable, which could lead to a homogeneous and persistent occlusion without severe inflammatory changes. PIB might be a suitable material for intravascular embolization.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects 0.5-1% of the population worldwide. Current diagnostic methods are based on psychiatric interviews, which are subjective in nature. The lack of disease biomarkers to support objective laboratory tests has been a long-standing bottleneck in the clinical diagnosis and evaluation of schizophrenia. Here we report a global metabolic profiling study involving 112 schizophrenic patients and 110 healthy subjects, who were divided into a training set and a test set, designed to identify metabolite markers. A panel of serum markers consisting of glycerate, eicosenoic acid, β-hydroxybutyrate, pyruvate and cystine was identified as an effective diagnostic tool, achieving an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.945 in the training samples (62 patients and 62 controls) and 0.895 in the test samples (50 patients and 48 controls). Furthermore, a composite panel by the addition of urine β-hydroxybutyrate to the serum panel achieved a more satisfactory accuracy, which reached an AUC of 1 in both the training set and the test set. Multiple fatty acids and ketone bodies were found significantly (P<0.01) elevated in both the serum and urine of patients, suggesting an upregulated fatty acid catabolism, presumably resulting from an insufficiency of glucose supply in the brains of schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Invasive fungal infections are a major threat to renal transplant recipients. Micafungin and voriconazole are two useful antifungal agents for treating such infections. Our objective is to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of micafungin and voriconazole in the initial treatment of such infections. METHODS In this prospective, multicentre, open-labelled, randomized, controlled trial, renal transplant recipients with invasive fungal infections were assigned to receive either micafungin or voriconazole. The enrolled subjects received a kidney transplant between March 2008 and March 2010 at one of the two transplant centres in Henan Province, China. The efficacy and adverse effects of the two treatments were compared. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The clinical trial enrolled 65 patients, of whom 31 were treated with micafungin, and 34 with voriconazole. The rates of microbiological evidence of infection in the micafungin and voriconazole groups were 64.5% and 70.5%, respectively, whereas the rates of Candida as the major cultured fungus were 80.0% and 75.0%, respectively. Complicated bacterial infection rates in the two treatment groups were 38.7% and 32.4%, respectively, whereas complicated CMV viral infection occurred at a rate of 19.2% and 23.5%, respectively. Fungal infection within one to 3 months after transplant was 83.6% (26/31) and 85.3% (29/34) in the micafungin and voriconazole groups, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of efficacy, survival beyond 10 days and discontinuation of treatment because of lack of efficacy (P > 0.05). Mortality rates in the micafungin and voriconazole groups were 9.7% (3/31) and 12.1% (4/33), respectively. Rates of adverse effects in the two groups were 41.9% and 51.6% (P > 0.05), respectively. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSIONS This is the first comparison of micafungin and voriconazole in renal transplant patients. Our study shows that the effectiveness of micafungin was similar to that of voriconazole in such patients.

Abstract
Adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASCs) have been gaining recognition as an extremely versatile cell source for tissue engineering. The usefulness of ASCs in biofabrication is further enhanced by our demonstration of the unique properties of these cells when they are cultured as three-dimensional cellular aggregates or spheroids. As described herein, three-dimensional formulations, or self-assembling ASC spheroids develop their own extracellular matrix that serves to increase the robustness of the cells to mechanical stresses. The composition of the extracellular matrix can be altered based on the external environment of the spheroids and these constructs can be grown in a reproducible manner and to a consistent size. The spheroid formulation helps preserve the viability and developmental plasticity of ASCs even under defined, serum-free media conditions. For the first time, we show that multiple generations of adherent ASCs produced from these spheroids retain their ability to differentiate into multiple cell/tissue types. These demonstrated properties support the idea that culture-expanded ASCs are an excellent candidate cellular material for 'organ printing'-the approach of developing complex tissue structures from a standardized cell 'ink' or cell formulation.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Ovariectomized (OVX) rats with tibial fracture received vehicle, ZA, PTH, or ZA plus PTH treatment for 4 and 8 weeks. Bone metabolism, callus formation, and the mass of undisturbed bone tissue were evaluated by serum analysis, histology, immunohistochemistry, radiography, micro-computerized tomography, and biomechanical test. INTRODUCTION Previous studies have demonstrated the effect of ZA or PTH on osteoporotic fracture healing. However, reports about effects of ZA plus PTH on callus formation of osteoporotic fracture were limited. This study was designed to investigate the impact of combined treatment with ZA and PTH on fracture healing in OVX rats. METHODS Twelve weeks after bilateral ovariectomy, all rats underwent unilateral transverse osteotomy on tibiae. Animals then randomly received vehicle, ZA (1.5 μg/kg weekly), PTH (60 μg/kg, three times a week), or ZA plus PTH until death at 4 and 8 weeks. The blood and bilateral tibiae of rats were harvested for evaluation. RESULTS All treatments increased callus formation and strength other than the control; ZA + PTH showed the strongest effects on percent bone volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness, total fluorescence-marked callus area, and biomechanical strength. Additionally, inhibited RANKL and enhanced osteoprotegerin expression were observed in the ZA + PTH group. But no difference in bone mineral density and BV/TV of the contralateral tibiae was observed between treated groups. CONCLUSION Findings in this study suggested an additive effect of ZA and PTH on fracture healing in OVX rats, and this additive effect was specific to callus formation, not to undisturbed bone tissue.

Abstract
The IFIH1 gene is a key factor connecting environmental and genetic factors in the pathogenesis of immune-related diseases. We aimed to investigate whether it has effects on psoriasis, chronic periodontitis and skin test-positive penicillin allergy and to confirm whether these diseases have shared molecular mechanisms originating from shared genetics. Two common variants in IFIH1 were genotyped in 561 patients with psoriasis, 421 patients with chronic periodontitis, 175 patients with skin test-positive penicillin allergy and 1100 shared controls. Then, case-control study was used to analyse the association between IFIH1 and the three diseases. The allele distributions of rs1990760 and rs3747517 in the Chinese population are much different from the European population. The A allele of rs1990760 (OR = 1.30, P = 5.4 × 10(-3)) and A-G (rs1990760/rs3747517) haplotype (OR = 1.31, P = 3.8 × 10(-3)) were highly associated with the risk of psoriasis. However, the A allele of rs1990760 (OR = 0.73, P = 7.8 × 10(-3)) and A-G haplotype (OR = 0.71, P = 4.5 × 10(-3)) were identified as protective factors for chronic periodontitis. IFIH1 affects several immune-related diseases, including psoriasis and chronic periodontitis, and provides a molecular link between genetic susceptibility, viral infections and immune-related diseases. Moreover, we also confirm the hypothesis that shared molecular mechanisms from common genetic variants contribute to a spectrum of immune-related diseases.
