Constraining the p-Mode-g-Mode Tidal Instability with GW170817. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:061104. Abstract
We analyze the impact of a proposed tidal instability coupling p modes and g modes within neutron stars on GW170817. This nonresonant instability transfers energy from the orbit of the binary to internal modes of the stars, accelerating the gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We model the impact of this instability on the phasing of the gravitational wave signal using three parameters per star: an overall amplitude, a saturation frequency, and a spectral index. Incorporating these additional parameters, we compute the Bayes factor (lnB_{!pg}^{pg}) comparing our p-g model to a standard one. We find that the observed signal is consistent with waveform models that neglect p-g effects, with lnB_{!pg}^{pg}=0.03_{-0.58}^{+0.70} (maximum a posteriori and 90% credible region). By injecting simulated signals that do not include p-g effects and recovering them with the p-g model, we show that there is a ≃50% probability of obtaining similar lnB_{!pg}^{pg} even when p-g effects are absent. We find that the p-g amplitude for 1.4 M_{⊙} neutron stars is constrained to less than a few tenths of the theoretical maximum, with maxima a posteriori near one-tenth this maximum and p-g saturation frequency ∼70 Hz. This suggests that there are less than a few hundred excited modes, assuming they all saturate by wave breaking. For comparison, theoretical upper bounds suggest ≲10^{3} modes saturate by wave breaking. Thus, the measured constraints only rule out extreme values of the p-g parameters. They also imply that the instability dissipates ≲10^{51} erg over the entire inspiral, i.e., less than a few percent of the energy radiated as gravitational waves.

Search for Subsolar-Mass Ultracompact Binaries in Advanced LIGO's First Observing Run. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:231103. Abstract
We present the first Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo search for ultracompact binary systems with component masses between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙} using data taken between September 12, 2015 and January 19, 2016. We find no viable gravitational wave candidates. Our null result constrains the coalescence rate of monochromatic (delta function) distributions of nonspinning (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.0×10^{6} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the coalescence rate of a similar distribution of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.9×10^{4} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} (at 90% confidence). Neither black holes nor neutron stars are expected to form below ∼1 M_{⊙} through conventional stellar evolution, though it has been proposed that similarly low mass black holes could be formed primordially through density fluctuations in the early Universe and contribute to the dark matter density. The interpretation of our constraints in the primordial black hole dark matter paradigm is highly model dependent; however, under a particular primordial black hole binary formation scenario we constrain monochromatic primordial black hole populations of 0.2 M_{⊙} to be less than 33% of the total dark matter density and monochromatic populations of 1.0 M_{⊙} to be less than 5% of the dark matter density. The latter strengthens the presently placed bounds from microlensing surveys of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) provided by the MACHO and EROS Collaborations.

Evolution and persistence of resistance-associated substitutions of hepatitis C virus after direct-acting antiviral treatment failures. J Viral Hepat 2018; 25:1251-1259. Abstract
Daclatasvir plus asunaprevir (DCV+ASV) treatment is an all-oral direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for the genotype 1b HCV-infected patients. In this study, we investigated how resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) evolved after treatment failures and assessed the effect of those substitutions on viral fitness. Sequencing of NS5A and NS3 revealed typical RASs after treatment failures. Interestingly, the RASs of NS3 reverted to the wild-type amino acid within 1 year after treatment failures. However, the RASs of NS5A were stable and did not change. The effect of NS5A and NS3 RASs on viral RNA replication was assessed after mutagenic substitution in the genotype 1b HCV RNA. Among single substitutions, the effect of D168V was more substantial than the others and the effect of the triple mutant combination (D168V+L31V+Y93H) was the most severe. The RAS at NS5A Y93 affected both viral RNA replication and virus production. Finally, the effect of trans-complementation of NS5A was demonstrated in our co-transfection experiments and these results suggest that such a trans-complementation effect of NS5A may help maintain the NS5A RASs for a long time even after cessation of the DAA treatment. In conclusion, the results from this investigation would help understand the emergence and persistence of RASs.

Abstract
On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were neutron stars that are described by the same equation of state and have spins within the range observed in Galactic binary neutron stars. Our analysis employs two methods: the use of equation-of-state-insensitive relations between various macroscopic properties of the neutron stars and the use of an efficient parametrization of the defining function p(ρ) of the equation of state itself. From the LIGO and Virgo data alone and the first method, we measure the two neutron star radii as R_{1}=10.8_{-1.7}^{+2.0} km for the heavier star and R_{2}=10.7_{-1.5}^{+2.1} km for the lighter star at the 90% credible level. If we additionally require that the equation of state supports neutron stars with masses larger than 1.97 M_{⊙} as required from electromagnetic observations and employ the equation-of-state parametrization, we further constrain R_{1}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km and R_{2}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km at the 90% credible level. Finally, we obtain constraints on p(ρ) at supranuclear densities, with pressure at twice nuclear saturation density measured at 3.5_{-1.7}^{+2.7}×10^{34} dyn cm^{-2} at the 90% level.

Abstract
Kidney transplant recipients are at increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and malignant neoplasm, and meticulous evaluation of potential recipients is needed to minimize risks of complications after transplantation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of preoperative assessments and document the importance of timed and detailed examinations. METHODS Medical records of patients evaluated as kidney transplant candidates from January 2015 to September 2017 were retrospectively collected and analyzed. RESULTS Of the 216 patients evaluated during the study period, 135 (62.5%) were male, 112 (51.9%) had diabetes mellitus, 163 (75.5%) had hypertension, 31 (14.4%) had a cardiovascular event history, and 7 (3.2%) had previous history of malignant neoplasms. Mean (SD) patient age was 50.7 (10.8) years. All 216 recipient candidates underwent echocardiography. Mean (SD) ejection fraction was 57.8% (5.9%), and 48 candidates (22.2%) showed regional wall motional abnormality. Coronary angiography was performed on 81 candidates, and in 57 (70.4%) of these, coronary artery disease was detected. Malignant neoplasms were detected in 10 (4.6%) candidates. Kidney transplantation was performed on 55 candidates. One recipient died of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia at 15 months after kidney transplant, but there was no death-censored graft failure, newly detected malignant neoplasm, or cardiovascular event over a mean (SD) follow-up duration of 15.5 (8.6) months. CONCLUSION Evaluation of kidney transplant candidates resulted in diagnoses of malignant neoplasms in 4.6% of patients and coronary artery disease in 26.4% of patients. The results of this study demonstrate candidates for kidney transplant should undergo detailed preoperative evaluation.

Abstract
Purpose A new fixed-dose combination (FDC) formulation of 120 mg fimasartan and 20 mg rosuvastatin was developed to increase therapeutic convenience and improve treatment compliance. Methods A randomized, open-label, single-dose, two-treatment, two-way crossover study with a 7-day washout period was conducted to compare the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics and bioequivalence between an FDC of fimasartan/rosuvastatin and the separate co-administration of fimasartan and rosuvastatin in healthy Korean volunteers. The plasma concentrations of fimasartan and rosuvastatin were analyzed by a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method, for which serial blood samples were collected for up to 48 hours post-administration of fimasartan and 72 hours post-administration of rosuvastatin, in each period. The PK parameters were calculated using a non-compartmental method. Results A total of 78 subjects completed the study. All the 90% CIs of the geometric mean ratios (GMRs) fell within the predetermined acceptance range. The GMR and 90% CI for the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last measurement (AUC0–t) and the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) for fimasartan were 0.9999 (0.9391–1.0646) and 1.0399 (0.8665–1.2479), respectively. The GMR and 90% CI for the AUC0–t and Cmax for rosuvastatin were 1.0075 (0.9468–1.0722) and 1.0856 (0.9944–1.1852), respectively. Treatment with fimasartan and rosuvastatin was generally well tolerated without serious adverse events. Conclusion The new FDC formulation of 120 mg fimasartan and 20 mg rosuvastatin can be substituted for the separate co-administration of fimasartan and rosuvastatin, for the advantage of better compliance with convenient therapeutic administration.

Abstract
In cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), reconstructed images are inherently degraded, restricting its image performance, due mainly to imperfections in the imaging process resulting from detector resolution, noise, X-ray tube's focal spot, and reconstruction procedure as well. Thus, the recovery of CBCT images from their degraded version is essential for improving image quality. In this study, we investigated a compressed-sensing (CS)-based blind deconvolution method to solve the blurring problem in CBCT where both the image to be recovered and the blur kernel (or point-spread function) of the imaging system are simultaneously recursively identified. We implemented the proposed algorithm and performed a systematic simulation and experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of using the algorithm for image deblurring in dental CBCT. In the experiment, we used a commercially available dental CBCT system that consisted of an X-ray tube, which was operated at 90 kVp and 5 mA, and a CMOS flat-panel detector with a 200-μm pixel size. The image characteristics were quantitatively investigated in terms of the image intensity, the root-mean-square error, the contrast-to-noise ratio, and the noise power spectrum. The results indicate that our proposed method effectively reduced the image blur in dental CBCT, excluding repetitious measurement of the system's blur kernel.

Abstract
Although far advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally considered a contraindication for liver transplantation (LT), biologically favorable tumors among them could show acceptable results. However, it is still unclear which tumors can be treated with LT. Data were collected on adult patients who underwent LT for HCC beyond the Milan criteria in 8 Korean LT centers between January 2000 and June 2013. Far advanced HCC was defined as HCC with the largest tumor ≥ 10 cm, 10 or more tumor nodules, or accompanying macrovascular invasion. A total of 688 patients, including 169 with far advanced HCC, were enrolled in this study. The 5-year overall and recurrence-free survival rates were 60.4% and 55.1%, respectively, for all patients but only 28.7% and 24.8%, respectively, for patients with far advanced HCC (P < 0.001). Both preoperative alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist II (PIVKA-II) were significant risk factors for HCC recurrence after LT. In particular, AFP + PIVKA-II combined was a better predictor than either marker alone. Of all far advanced HCC patients with available AFP and PIVKA-II levels, 45 (30.8%) had low AFP + PIVKA-II (≤300) and their 5-year overall and recurrence-free survival rate were 47.8% and 53.4%, respectively, which were acceptable and significantly superior to those of patients with AFP (ng/mL) + PIVKA-II (nAU/mL) > 300 (21.0% and 10.8%, respectively; P < 0.001). In conclusion, patients with favorable HCC had acceptable outcomes after LT even when their tumors were extremely advanced. AFP + PIVKA-II gave reliable information about the tumor biology of far advanced HCC. Liver Transplantation 00 000-000 2018 AASLD.

Abstract
Objectives Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is routinely used in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. However, it has several pitfalls, as has been noted in nondiagnostic and indeterminate cases. This study aims to investigate the value of BRAF V600E mutation co-testing in FNA cytology. Method A total of 310 patients underwent BRAF V600E mutation co-testing in FNA cytology on thyroid nodules between June 2013 and June 2014. Of the 310 patients, 69 patients who had undergone a surgery for thyroid nodules were included in this study. The presence of the BRAF V600E mutation was determined by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction amplification of exon 15 of the BRAF gene. Results Of 69 cases, 33 (47.8%) were BRAF V600E mutation positive. The BRAF V600E mutation was not significantly associated with high-risk features such as tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and pathological stage. The respective diagnostic performance of FNA ( P = 0.02), BRAF V600E mutation ( P = 0.03), and ultrasonographic ( P = 0.00) findings was statistically significant. The sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of FNA was 64.9%, 83.3%, and 94.8%. The sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of BRAF V600E mutation was 56.1%, 91.7%, and 96.9% and the US features was 91.2%, 91.7%, and 98.1% respectively. However, sensitivity of FNA with BRAF V600E mutation (77.2%) was lower than FNA with US (92.9%) and combination all together (92.9%). Conclusion In this study, we found that US features were the most useful in preoperative differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. BRAF V600E mutation co-testing in FNA cytology was also useful for diagnosis of thyroid tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Modifications of erythrocyte membrane fatty acid (FA) contents may affect cellular function or transmembrane receptors. One cross-sectional study has shown that kidney transplant (KTP) recipients have lower erythrocyte membrane oleic acid content than dialysis patients do. Therefore, we prospectively tested whether erythrocyte membrane contents of FA including oleic acid change after KTP. METHODS We recruited 23 KTP recipients (September 2011 through May 2014). Blood samples were obtained immediately before KTP and 6 months after. Erythrocyte membrane FA contents were measured by gas chromatography. RESULTS Mean age of the enrolled KTP recipients was 45.3 ± 10.9 years, and men represented 66.7% of the cases. ABO-incompatible KTPs constituted 14.3% and cadaver donors 42.9% of the cases. Steroids, mycophenolate mofetil, and tacrolimus were used as immunosuppressive treatment. There was no significant difference in dietary consumption between time points before and 6 months after KTP. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly higher at 6 months after KTP as compared with baseline. Erythrocyte membrane contents of polyunsaturated FA, ω-3 FA, ω-6 FA, and the ω-3 index were significantly higher, but erythrocyte membrane contents of total saturated FAs, total monounsaturated FAs, including oleic acid, total trans-FA, palmitoleic acid, and the ω-6-to-ω-3 ratio were significantly lower at 6 months after KTP. CONCLUSIONS Erythrocyte membrane FA contents significantly changed toward a more favorable cardiovascular profile after KTP. These changes in erythrocyte membrane FA contents may be related to improved renal function because of the absence of significant dietary changes.

Abstract
In recent years when the demand for high-performance biosensors has been aroused, a field-effect transistor (FET)-type biosensor (BioFET) has attracted great interest because of its high sensitivity, label-free detection, fast detection speed, and miniaturization. However, the insulating membrane in the conventional BioFET, which is essential in preventing the surface dangling bonds of typical semiconductors from nonspecific bindings, has limited the sensitivity of biosensors. Here, we present a highly sensitive and reusable membraneless BioFET based on a defect-free van der Waals material, tungsten diselenide (WSe2). We intentionally generated a few surface defects that serve as extra binding sites for the bioreceptor immobilization through weak oxygen plasma treatment, consequently magnifying the sensitivity values to 2.87 × 105 A/A for 10 mM glucose. The WSe2 BioFET also maintained its high sensitivity even after several cycles of rinsing and glucose application were repeated.

Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Ω_{0}^{T}<5.58×10^{-8}, Ω_{0}^{V}<6.35×10^{-8}, and Ω_{0}^{S}<1.08×10^{-7} at a reference frequency f_{0}=25 Hz.

Impact of controlled attenuation parameter on detecting fibrosis using liver stiffness measurement. Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2018; 47:989-1000. Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis is often accompanied by steatosis, particularly in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and its non-invasive characterisation is of utmost importance. Vibration-controlled transient elastography is the non-invasive method of choice; however, recent research suggests that steatosis may influence its diagnostic performance. Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) added to transient elastography enables simultaneous assessment of steatosis and fibrosis. AIM To determine how to use CAP in interpreting liver stiffness measurements. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of data from an individual patient data meta-analysis on CAP. The main exclusion criteria for the current analysis were unknown aetiology, unreliable elastography measurement and data already used for the same research question. Aetiology-specific liver stiffness measurement cut-offs were determined and used to estimate positive and negative predictive values (PPV/NPV) with logistic regression as functions of CAP. RESULTS Two thousand and fifty eight patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria (37% women, 18% NAFLD/NASH, 42% HBV, 40% HCV, 51% significant fibrosis ≥ F2). Youden optimised cut-offs were only sufficient for ruling out cirrhosis (NPV of 98%). With sensitivity and specificity-optimised cut-offs, NPV for ruling out significant fibrosis was moderate (70%) and could be improved slightly through consideration of CAP. PPV for significant fibrosis and cirrhosis were 68% and 55% respectively, despite specificity-optimised cut-offs for cirrhosis. CONCLUSIONS Liver stiffness measurement values below aetiology-specific cut-offs are very useful for ruling out cirrhosis, and to a lesser extent for ruling out significant fibrosis. In the case of the latter, Controlled Attenuation Parameter can improve interpretation slightly. Even if cut-offs are very high, liver stiffness measurements are not very reliable for ruling in fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Abstract
In recent years, various van der Waals (vdW) materials have been used in implementing high-performance photodetectors with high photoresponsivity over a wide detection range. However, in most studies reported so far, photodetection in the infrared (IR) region has not been achieved successfully. Although several vdW materials with narrow bandgaps have been proposed for IR detection, the devices based on these materials exhibit notably low photoresponsivity under IR light illumination. Here, highly efficient near-infrared (NIR) photodetection based on the interlayer optical transition phenomenon in a vdW heterojunction structure consisting of ReS2 and ReSe2 is demonstrated. In addition, by applying the gate-control function to the two-terminal vdW heterojunction photodetector, the photoresponsivity is enhanced to 3.64 × 105 A W-1 at λ = 980 nm and 1.58 × 105 A W-1 at λ = 1310 nm. Compared to the values reported for previous vdW photodetectors, these results are the highest levels of photoresponsivity in the NIR range. The study offers a novel device platform for achieving high-performance IR photodetectors.

Pharmacokinetic and bioequivalence study of a telmisartan/S-amlodipine fixed-dose combination (CKD-828) formulation and coadministered telmisartan and S-amlodipine in healthy subjects. DRUG DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND THERAPY 2018; 12:545-553. [PMID: 29559771 PMCID: PMC5857156 DOI: 10.2147/dddt.s156492] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 12/13/2022]
Abstract
Purpose A new fixed-dose combination (FDC) formulation of telmisartan 80 mg and S-amlodipine 5 mg (CKD-828) has been developed to increase convenience (as only one tablet is required per day) and improve treatment compliance. Methods The pharmacokinetic characteristics and tolerability of an FDC of telmisartan and S-amlodipine were compared to those after coadministration of the individual agents in this randomized, open-label, single-dose, two-way, four-period, crossover study. To analyze the telmisartan and S-amlodipine plasma concentrations using a validated liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method, serial blood samples were collected up to 48 hours post-dose for telmisartan and 144 hours post-dose for S-amlodipine, in each period. Results Forty-eight healthy subjects were enrolled, and 43 completed the study. The mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and the area under the plasma concentration–time curve from time 0 to the last measurement (AUC0–t) values of telmisartan were 522.29 ng/mL and 2,475.16 ng·h/mL for the FDC, and 540.45 ng/mL and 2,559.57 ng·h/mL for the individual agents concomitantly administered, respectively. The mean Cmax and AUC0–t values of S-amlodipine were 2.71 ng/mL and 130.69 ng·h/mL for the FDC, and 2.74 ng/mL and 129.81 ng·h/mL for the individual agents concomitantly administered, respectively. The geometric mean ratio (GMR) and 90% confidence interval (CI) for the telmisartan Cmax and AUC0–t (FDC of telmisartan and S-amlodipine/concomitant administration) were 0.8509 (0.7353–0.9846) and 0.9431 (0.8698–1.0226), respectively. The GMR and 90% CI for the S-amlodipine Cmax and AUC0–t (FDC/concomitant administration) were 0.9829 (0.9143–1.0567) and 0.9632 (0.8798–1.0546), respectively. As the intrasubject variability of the Cmax for telmisartan administered individually was 42.94%, all 90% CIs of the GMRs fell within the predetermined acceptance range. Both treatments were well tolerated in this study. Conclusion CKD-828 FDC tablets were shown to be bioequivalent to coadministration of the individual agents with the respective strength, in healthy subjects under fasting conditions. There was no significant difference in safety profile between the two treatments.

GW170817: Implications for the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background from Compact Binary Coalescences. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 120:091101. Abstract
The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the event GW170817, the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star component will add to the contribution from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude Ω_{GW}(f=25 Hz)=1.8_{-1.3}^{+2.7}×10^{-9} with 90% confidence, compared with Ω_{GW}(f=25 Hz)=1.1_{-0.7}^{+1.2}×10^{-9} from binary black holes alone. Assuming the most probable rate for compact binary mergers, we find that the total background may be detectable with a signal-to-noise-ratio of 3 after 40 months of total observation time, based on the expected timeline for Advanced LIGO and Virgo to reach their design sensitivity.

Effect of PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism on histologically proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in liver transplant recipients. Hepatol Res 2018; 48:E162-E171. [PMID: 28718984 DOI: 10.1111/hepr.12940] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/10/2017] [Revised: 07/10/2017] [Accepted: 07/13/2017] [Indexed: 12/13/2022]
Abstract
AIM PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism (rs738409 C>G) is the most important and best-known polymorphism for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, little is known about the effect of this polymorphism on NAFLD after liver transplantation (LT). We aimed to evaluate the association between this polymorphism and post-LT NAFLD. METHODS We designed a prospective case-control study. Among adult recipients who underwent LT between April 2014 and October 2015, those whose whole blood was preoperatively collected for genotyping in both recipients and coupled donors and those who underwent protocol biopsy at 1 year post-LT were enrolled. RESULTS A total of 32 recipients were enrolled. Histologically proven steatosis (≥5%) was present in 28.1% of patients at a mean time of 12.7 ± 2.0 months after LT. Moderate and more severe steatosis (≥33%) was present in 9.4%. One year after LT, steatosis was present in 50.0% of homozygous recipients with the rs738409-G allele. It was present in 27.3% of heterozygous recipients with the rs738409-G allele, and in 9.1% (P = 0.041) of recipients with rs738409-CC. The genotype of the donor was not significantly (P = 0.647) associated with post-LT NAFLD. When both recipient and coupled donor showed heterogeneous or homozygous genotype of the rs738409-G allele, there was significantly more post-LT NAFLD compared to that in others (47.1% vs. 6.7%; P = 0.018). In univariate and multivariate analyses, only the presence of the rs738409-G risk allele in both donor and recipient was a significant risk factor for post-LT NALFD (relative risk, 26.95; P = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism can significantly affect histologically proven NAFLD at 1 year post-LT.

Abstract
Purpose Although there are several prospective clinical studies comparing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and hepatic resection (HR) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, there are few trials that have been performed in strictly homogeneous patients. Methods Patients who were newly diagnosed with a solitary hepatocellular carcinoma were randomized to the HR or RFA group. Inclusion criteria were as follows: age ≥ 20 years but ≤ 70 years, Child-Pugh class A, maximal diameter of the tumor ≥ 2 cm but ≤ 4 cm, no previous treatment history, and platelet count > 80,000/mm3. Results Although the study was early terminated, 29 and 34 patients were enrolled in the HR and RFA groups, respectively, and prospectively followed on an intention-to-treat basis. The 5-year overall survival rates were 83.4% and 86.2% in the HR and RFA groups, respectively, which were not significantly different (P = 0.812 by log-rank, P = 0.990 by Breslow). The 3- and 5-year disease-free survival rates in the HR group were significantly superior to those in the RFA group (66.7%, 44.4% vs. 44.1%, 31.2%, P = 0.071 by log-rank, P = 0.023 by Breslow). Intrahepatic local recurrence tended to develop more frequently in the RFA group (P = 0.042), while the frequency of intrahepatic distant and extrahepatic recurrence was similar bet ween the 2 groups. There were no significant differences in the frequency and severity of complications between the 2 groups. Conclusion HR was significantly superior to RFA in terms of disease-free survival; however, the overall survival was excellent in both groups.

Abstract
We present results from the first directed search for nontensorial gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for tensorial (plus and cross) modes only, a generic metric theory may, in principle, predict waves with up to six different polarizations. This analysis is sensitive to continuous signals of scalar, vector, or tensor polarizations, and does not rely on any specific theory of gravity. After searching data from the first observation run of the advanced LIGO detectors for signals at twice the rotational frequency of 200 known pulsars, we find no evidence of gravitational waves of any polarization. We report the first upper limits for scalar and vector strains, finding values comparable in magnitude to previously published limits for tensor strain. Our results may be translated into constraints on specific alternative theories of gravity.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the rates of pretransplantation fetal-maternal microchimerism (MC) and its effect on rejection in children receiving maternal liver grafts.
METHODS DNA or blood samples before liver transplantation (LT) were available in 45 pediatric patients and their mothers. The presence of pretransplantation MC to non-inherited maternal antigens (NIMAs) (NIMA-MC) in the peripheral blood was tested using nested PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis for the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1 alleles. NIMA-MC was successfully evaluated in 26 of the 45 children. Among these 45 pediatric LT recipients, 23 children (51.1%) received transplants from maternal donors and the other 22 from non-maternal donors.
RESULTS Among these 26 children, pretransplantation NIMA-MC was detected in 23.1% (n = 6), 6.1 (range, 0.8-14) years after birth. Among the children with a maternal donor, the rate of biopsy-proven cellular rejection (BPCR) was 0% in patients with NIMA-MC positivity (0/3) and those with HLA-DR identity with the mother (0/4), but it was 50% in those with NIMA-MC negativity (5/10). Patients with NIMA-MC positivity or HLA-DR identity with the mother showed significantly lower BPCR rate compared with NIMA-MC-negative patients (0% vs 50%, P = 0.04). NIMA-MC-positive patients tended to show lower BPCR rate compared with NIMA-MC-negative patients (P = 0.23).
CONCLUSION The presence of pretransplantation NIMA-MC or HLA-DR identity with the mother could be associated with BPCR-free survival in pediatric recipients of LT from maternal donors.
