Abstract
Abstract
Background
The prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is strongly related with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and, hence, there has been some uncertainty about its independent relevance for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) after taking account of such risk factors.
Purpose
To examine the associations of LVH with prevalent and incident cases of IHD after adjustment for established risk factors for CVD in a population-based study of Chinese adults.
Methods
The prospective China Kadoorie Biobank cohort study was conducted in the general population of 5 urban and 5 rural areas in China, with a baseline survey in 2004–2008. A random sample of 24,786 participants had a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded at the second resurvey in 2013–2014. Electronic records of ECG tracings were used to estimate LVH using 5 different criteria (Sokolov, Cornell, Romhilt-Estes, Gubner and Mortara). IHD cases were recorded by linkage to electronic records of hospitalisation, death and disease registries. Cox regression was used to estimate the associations of LVH with prevalent (n=1325) and incident (n=900) cases of IHD after adjustment for age, sex, region, prior vascular disease, smoking, alcohol, SBP, diabetes, lipids and body mass index (BMI).
Results
The overall prevalence of LVH in the population varied depending on the criteria used for detection (Mortara [10%], Sokolov [14%], Cornell [6%], Romhilt-Estes [4%] and Gubner [1%]). The prevalence of LVH (using Sokolov) increased with age and was higher in men than women (20% vs 10%) and linearly with levels of SBP, but also by ∼10-fold between the 10 regions in China. Irrespective of which criteria were used for detection (Table), LVH was strongly associated with both prevalent and incident cases of IHD after adjustment for age, sex, region and established CVD risk factors. Any one measure of LVH was associated with an adjusted OR (95% CI) of 1.30 (1.10, 1.53) for prevalent IHD and 1.40 (1.20, 1.64) for incident IHD, respectively.
Conclusions
Overall, 1 in 10 Chinese adults had LVH, and LVH was associated with 30% higher risk of prevalent IHD and 40% higher risk of IHD independent of established CVD risk factors.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the use of p16(INK4a) immuno-stained cytology as the primary screening for cervical cancer prevention. Methods: From March to August 2018, 902 women from Shenzhen and surrounding area were recruited for cervical cancer screening with ThinPrep Cytologic Test (TCT), cobas4800 HPV test, and p16(INK4a) co-test. Colpo/biopsies were performed using the point of interest biopsy protocol of directed and random cervical biopsies plus endocervical curettage for all women, any of whose tests was positive. Two senior cytopathologists interpreted TCT and p16(INK4a) test. The performance of p16(INK4a) for early detection of CIN2+ and inter-observer reproducibility of the interpretation of p16(INK4a) were evaluated. Results: The positive rates of HPV test, p16(INK4a) co-test and TCT diagnosed as LSIL/AGC or higher grade were 8.1% (73/902), 6.8% (61/902) and 4.7% (42/902), respectively. Colposcopy referring rate was 79.6% (109/137), among which 10 cases were diagnosed as CIN2+ (5 cases of CIN2 and 5 cases of CIN3). The sensitivity and specificity for CIN2+ of p16(INK4a) test, TCT (LSIL/AGC or higher grade) and HPV test were 90.0%, 80.0%, 100.0% and 90.9%, 91.9%, 82.5%, respectively. Compared to TCT and HPV test, there was no significant difference in sensitivity and specificity between p16(INK4a) and TCT/HPV test (P>0.05). The Kappa value of the 2 cytopathologists in interpreting p16(INK4a) and TCT was 0.944 and 0.425, respectively (P<0.05). Conclusions: p16(INK4a) for cervical cancer screening is equally sensitive to HPV test and specific to TCT while subjective difference of cytopathologists' interpretation of p16(INK4a) is small. Therefore, p16(INK4a) can be used as a new cervical cancer screen method for its better diagnostic performance.

Abstract
Background The application of apatinib is immensely limited by its acquired drug resistance. This research investigates whether cordycepin, a component from Cordyceps could synergize with apatinib to improve its anticancer effect on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Methods The NSCLC cell lines A549, PC9, and H1993, and human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cell line Bears-2B were used in this study. Cell counting kit 8, colony formation assays, wound healing assay, transwell assay, and flow cytometry analysis were performed to assess the cell viability, the migration ability, and invasion ability of the cells. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG), western blotting and molecular docking was applied to analyze the possible pathways affected by cordycepin. Results The combination of cordycepin and apatinib in a ratio of 5:1 synergistically reduced proliferation of NSCLC cells, inhibited cell migration and invasion, increased cell apoptosis by altering cell cycle in NSCLC A549 and PC9 cells. The VEGF/PI3K/Akt pathway was inhibited after treatment with cordycepin and apatinib. Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that the combination of cordycepin and apatinib has synergistically anticancer effect on NSCLC cells by down-regulating VEGF/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. This result indicated that cordycepin and apatinib could be a promising drug combination against NSCLC.

Abstract
Apocynum venetum L. is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with great potential to treat angiocardiopathy. Its major medicinal constituents are flavonoids. However, the natural habitats of A. venetum are typically affected by salt stress, which can modify both biomass and accumulation of medicinal compounds. In this study, the effects of salt stress on growth and development of A. venetum, accumulation of flavonoids and expression patterns of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis were evaluated. In general, the growth and development of seedlings (seedling height, root length, leaf length, leaf width and seed germination) were inhibited by salt stress. Unlike typical halophytes, there was no optimal NaCl concentration range that promoted growth and development, but seedlings had an elevated DW/FW ratio under salt stress (induced by irrigation with 50, 100, 200 or 400 mm NaCl). Furthermore, quercetin and kaempferol were significantly accumulated in A. venetum seedlings under salt stress, resulting in a balanced content and reduced FW. Moreover, the expression of AvCHS, AvCHI and AvF3GT was inhibited by salt stress; however, AvF3'H, AvF3H and AvFLS, which are involved in the flavonol synthesis pathway, were up-regulated under salt stress, consistent with a decrease in total flavonoids and an increase of flavonols (quercetin and kaempferol). In summary, cultivation of A. venetum in saline soils appeared to be feasible and improved the medicinal quality of A. venetum (quercetin and kaempferol accumulation under salt stress), thus this species can effectively utilize saline soil resources.

Abstract
Silicon accumulation type modulators offer prospects of high power efficiency, large bandwidth and high voltage phase linearity making them promising candidates for a number of advanced electro-optic applications. A significant challenge in the realisation of such a modulator is the fabrication of the passive waveguide structure which requires a thin dielectric layer to be positioned within the waveguide, i.e. slotted waveguides. Simultaneously, the fabricated slotted waveguide should be integrated with conventional rib waveguides with negligible optical transition losses. Here, successful integration of polysilicon and silicon slot waveguides enabling a low propagation loss 0.4-1.2 dB/mm together with an ultra-small optical mode conversion loss 0.04 dB between rib and slot waveguides is demonstrated. These fabricated slot waveguide with dielectric thermal SiO2 layer thicknesses around 6 nm, 8 nm and 10 nm have been characterized under transmission electron microscopy allowing for strong carrier accumulation effects for MOS-capacitor electro-optic modulators.

Abstract
1. The Tibetan chicken, which is an indigenous breed living on the Tibetan Plateau, exhibits hypoxic adaptations to its high-altitude environment. However, the molecular mechanism behind this hypoxic adaptation is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate differentially expressed miRNAs involved in hypoxic adaptation through high-throughput RNA sequencing. 2. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to verify the differentially expressed miRNAs and their target genes in chicken embryonic heart tissues and fibroblasts. Luciferase reporter assays were performed to confirm the relationship between miRNAs and target genes. 3. The study identified 37 differentially expressed miRNAs in Tibetan chicken embryonic heart tissues, including 20 up- and 17 down-regulated miRNAs, compared to those found in lowland chickens. Differentially expressed miRNAs were mainly involved in biological processes, such as cell cycle arrest, toll-like receptor signalling pathways, and I-kappa B kinase/NF-kappa B signalling. The data showed that gga-miR-34 c-5p was significantly upregulated in Tibetan chicken tissues and hypoxic fibroblasts, while EHHADH, a target gene of gga-miR-34 c-5p, was downregulated. Moreover, gga-miR-34 c-5p dramatically decreased the luciferase activity of the wild EHHADH, whereas no effect on the mutational EHHADH was found. 4. This study identified miRNA expression profiles in the Tibetan chicken and suggested that miR-34 c-5p acts as a novel miRNA associated with hypoxic adaptation. This facilitates the understanding of molecular mechanisms that underlie long-term exposure to hypoxia.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystem and characterized by a wide range of molecular weight (MW) distribution. In this study, a total of nine bulk DOM samples, including five International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) standards and four naturally collected samples, were fractionated into low MW (LMW-, <1 kDa) and high MW (HMW-, 1 kDa~0.45 μm) fractions, with MW-dependent heterogeneities in photochemical formation of hydroxyl radical (HO) was investigated. The formation rate of HO (RHO) for the bulk samples were 4.60-7.27 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for IHSS standards and 4.63-7.66 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for naturally collected samples. Regardless of sample types, the LMW fraction was found to exhibit generally higher RHO values than the HMW counterparts. For IHSS standards, the RHO decreased from 4.68-8.46 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for LMW fraction to 3.67-6.66 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for HMW fraction, and for naturally collected samples, the value of RHO decreased from 5.21-12.04 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for LMW fraction to 3.25-6.49 × 10-12 M/s/mg-C/L for HMW counterpart. A positive correlation between the net RHO and the normalized intensities of fluorescent peak [Em/Ex: (400-500)/(230-250) nm] was found, showing that the HO formation was strongly coupled to the abundance of humic-like substances. The results indicate that aquatic DOM is an important pool for HO formation, and characterization of MW distribution rather than average MW is thus required to explain the DOM-induced formation potential of HO.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the autofluorescence findings of retinal astrocytic hamartoma (RAH) in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. Twenty-three patients (35 eyes) who were referred to Department of Internal Medicine and Department of Ophthalmology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital between November 2012 and June 2018 with established TSC-associated RAH diagnosis were included. The findings of fundus autofluorescence, fundus photos and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) were retrospectively reviewed. RAH lesions were classified into three types based on the morphology shown in fundus photos. The fundus autofluorescence features of TSC-associated RAH were described. The Welch's test and Fisher's exact test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The patients were 8 males and 15 females aged (28±9) years old (range, 15-55 years). Seventy-two RAH lesions were examined, including 59 type 1 RAHs, 7 type 2 RAHs and 6 type 3 RAHs. According to fundus autofluorescence, type 1 RAHs could be further divided into reduced, speckled and background autofluorescence patterns, among which the hypoautofluorescence pattern accounted for the majority (69.5%, 41/59), while the speckled pattern was usually accompanied by outer retinal disorganization and discontinuation of photoreceptor outer segment as revealed by SD-OCT. No significant difference was revealed in tumor thickness for reduced, speckled and background autofluorescence patterns of type 1 RAHs [(490.2±97.9) vs. (589.2±221.6) vs. (463.0±76.2) μm respectively, F=1.426, P=0.283]. Among type 1 RAHs, the number of reduced autofluorescence pattern lesions found in perifoveal, peripapillary, inferonasal, inferotemporal, superonasal, superotemporal quadrants were 9, 4, 4, 7, 4, 13 respectively, while that of speckled autofluorescence pattern lesions were 3, 0, 3, 2, 3, 2 and background autoflurorescence pattern lesions 3, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0. No significant difference was revealed in location distribution (P=0.452) either. Type 2 RAHs featured numerous hyperautofluorescent spots or plaques, and calcification in type 2 RAHs varied in autofluorescence intensity. Type 3 RAHs, combining the features of type 1 and 2 RAHs, were characterized by central hyperautofluorescent spots and hypoautoflurescent rim, but the area of hyperautofluorescence was smaller than that of calcification as shown in fundus photos. Conclusions: In TSC, the fundus autofluorescence of RAHs varies from hypoautofluorescence to hyperautofluorescence patterns according to RAH types. The retinal involvement and calcification degree of TSC-associated RAHs could be reflected on the autofluorescence, which was beneficial to the full assessment. Abstract
BACKGROUND Vascular targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel and promising therapy for the treatment of port-wine stains (PWS). There has been little prior exploration to our knowledge of how the dermatological vascular pattern may predict the response to PDT. OBJECTIVES To analyse whether the vascular pattern classifications of PWS by dermoscopy can predict the efficacy of PDT. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 163 patients with a clinical diagnosis of PWS who were treated twice with hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy (HMME-PDT) at two-month intervals and followed up for 6 months. The vascular manifestations of dermoscopy with PWS were independently classified into 8 categories by 3 dermatologists. Images of the lesions were taken using VISIA, and the vascular patterns were imaged by dermoscopy by the same investigator. Images were captured before and after each treatment. The efficacy was evaluated with pre- and post-treatment VISIA images, and correlations between efficacy and vascular patterns were analysed by four dermatologists in a blinded and independent manner, between 10 January 2019 and 11 December 2019. RESULTS In the dermoscopy images for the whole cohort, dotted and globular vessels (15.3%), short clubbed vessels (18.4%) and curved vessels (12.9%) were highly associated with cure and beneficial treatment effects. Pale halos surrounding brown dots (8.0%) and arborizing vessels (9.8%) were mainly correlated with skin lesion alleviation. Mixed vessels (12.9%), a grey-whitish veil (11.7%) and reticular patterns (11.0%) were mainly associated with no effect. The differences between each subgroup were statistically significant (P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS There is a clear correlation between the efficacy of PDT and the dermoscopy pattern in patients with PWS. Dermoscopy may therefore provide very useful clinical information prior to treatment in these cases. In addition, the vascular manifestations of PWS determined by dermoscopy help to predict response to PDT and manage patient expectations.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most frequent cancers and a major cause of cancer death in women. In this article, the design and control of a novel magnetic resonance imaging-compatible breast intervention robot are proposed. The dimensions and tolerance of the robot system are considered, and a novel pitching mechanism is designed to achieve a dexterous operation in the limited space. The magnetic resonance imaging compatibility of the robot materials is tested. The nonmagnetic structure and compact Cartesian mechanism of the robot allow it to operate safely in a magnetic resonance imaging scanner. According to the robot’s structure, a kinematics analysis based on a coupled motions model is established. The workspace simulation analysis of the robot proves that it is suitable for the whole breast surgery. To control the needle insertion tasks, the overall control system in the form of “personal computer (PC) + single-chip micyoco (SCM)” is designed. Finally, the motion control experiment is carried out, and the robot positioning error is 0.37 mm, which proves that the breast intervention robot and its control system designed in this article can meet the requirements of breast intervention.

Abstract
Hydroxyl radical (HO∙) in natural waters plays a critical role in contaminant transformation and ecosystem health. In this study, the photogeneration and steady-state concentration of HO∙ in different aquatic environments (e.g., river and lake) along the middle-lower Yangtze region, China, were evaluated. The results showed that, compared to lake samples, the river waters were characterized by lower HO∙ photoformation rate (RHO∙) (5.10-11.69 × 10-11 vs. 1.10-1.82 × 10-10 M s-1) and steady-state HO∙ concentration ([HO∙]) (1.76-3.11 × 10-17 vs. 2.50-10.33 × 10-17 M). The contribution of nitrate and nitrite to the total RHO∙ in river waters was generally higher than that in lake waters, and photolysis of nitrite exhibited contributions 1-2 times higher than those of nitrate (0-25% vs. 0-9%) irrespective of sample types. As a result, the photosensitization by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) contributed more than 70% of the total RHO∙ for all samples except for River Ganjiang. [HO∙] among all samples was positively correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, and the DOC-normalized [HO∙] was further related to the physicochemical properties of CDOM samples (e.g., aromaticity, humification, and molecular weight). The humic-like aromatic substances with low molecular weight were the controlling factors influencing [HO∙] in the studied surface waters. The results contributed to a deeper understanding of behaviors and fate of aquatic DOMs in terms of HO∙ formation and contaminant attenuation.

Abstract
Cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in aquatic environments are easily adsorbed onto colloidal particles, whereas the adsorption behavior as affected by molecular weight (MW) properties remained unknown till now. Herein, the bulk cyanobacterial EPS matrix (<0.45 μm) was fractionated into high MW (HMW-, 1 kDa~0.45 μm) and low MW (LMW-, <1 kDa) fractions, with MW-dependent adsorption heterogeneities onto TiO2 colloids exploring through batch experiment, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and two dimensional Fourier transform infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-COS). About two-thirds of total organic matters within bulk EPS matrix were distributed in the HMW fraction, leaving one-third in the LMW fraction. Compared to LMW-EPS, the HMW counterpart exhibited higher aromaticity and richness of autochthonous protein-like substances, showing evident MW-dependent differences in abundance and composition. The adsorption capacity based on the measurement of total abundance, UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra all decreased in sequence of HMW- > Bulk > LMW-EPS, demonstrating obvious MW-dependent adsorption heterogeneities. During adsorption, the values of SUVA254 in residual supernatants exhibited an initial decrease followed by gradual increase for all samples, suggesting that the preferentially adsorbed aromatic substances can be subsequently replaced by the non-aromatic moieties. 2D-FTIR-COS further revealed that the carboxylic groups of proteins were preferentially adsorbed onto colloidal surface, followed by the CC functional groups and then the CH groups of polysaccharides, which accounted for the variations of SUVA254 values in the supernatants. This study demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of EPS matrix was highly MW-dependent, and detailed characterization on size fractionation is thus needed in future studies.
