Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS We examined the link between altered gap junctional communication and renal haemodynamic abnormalities in diabetes in studies performed on Zucker lean (ZL) and the Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rat model of type 2 diabetes. METHODS The abundance of connexin (Cx) 37, 40 and 43 was assessed by western blot and immunohistochemistry. Renal haemodynamics was characterised with GAP peptides, which are Cx mimetics, to inhibit gap junctions as a probe in both strains. RESULTS ZDF rats exhibited higher plasma glucose, 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α excretion, renal plasma flow and GFR than ZL rats. In ZDF rat kidney phosphorylation of Cx43 was enhanced compared with that in ZL rats. Immunohistochemical study revealed that the density of abundance of Cx37 in renin-secreting cells was significantly reduced in ZDF rats. Although renal autoregulation was markedly impaired in ZDF rats, it was preserved in ZL rats. GAP27 for Cx37,43 and for Cx40 impaired renal autoregulation in ZL rats, but failed to induce further alterations in renal autoregulation in ZDF rats. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Our findings indicate that ZDF rats have glomerular hyperfiltration with impaired autoregulation. They also demonstrate enhanced phosphorylation of Cxs and reduced production of Cxs in ZDF rat kidney, especially of Cx37 in renin-secreting cells. Finally, our data suggest that an impairment of gap junctional communication in juxtaglomerular apparatus plays a role in altered renal autoregulation in diabetes.

Abstract
A 65-year-old man with left subclavian artery aneurysm, detected by enhanced computed tomography (CT), was referred to our hospital. The CT revealed intrathoracic left subclavian artery aneurysm (maximum diameter, 5 cm) at the takeoff of the aortic arch. Surgery was indicated considering the risks of rupture and embolism. The aneurysm was exposed through median sternotomy. Cardiopulmonary bypass was established with cannulation of the right axillary artery, left femoral artery, superior vena cava (SVC), and inferior vena cava (IVC). Circulatory arrest and isolated cerebral perfusion were achieved at a core temperature of 23 degrees C. Total arch replacement was performed using a 26 mm 4-branched Triplex graft, and the left subclavian artery was reconstructed by branch-left axillary artery bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful. He was discharged on the 22nd postoperative day.

Abstract
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common form of the progressive muscular dystrophies characterized by defects of the dystrophin gene. Although primarily characterized by degeneration of the limb muscles, cardiomyopathy is a major cause of death. Therefore, the development of curative modalities such as gene therapy is imperative. We evaluated the cardiomyopathic features of mdx mice to observe improvements in response to intravenous administration of recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) type 9 encoding microdystrophin. The myocardium was extensively transduced with microdystrophin to significantly prevent the development of fibrosis, and expression persisted for the duration of the study. Intraventricular conduction patterns, such as the QRS complex duration and S/R ratio in electrocardiography, were also corrected, indicating that the transduced microdystrophin has a protective effect on the dystrophin-deficient myocardium. Furthermore, BNP and ANP levels were reduced to normal, suggesting the absence of cardiac dysfunction. In aged mice, prevention of ectopic beats as well as echocardiographic amelioration was also demonstrated with improved exercise performance. These findings indicate that AAV-mediated cardiac transduction with microdystrophin might be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of dystrophin-deficient cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
Although open-chest surgery is the mainstay treatment for esophageal cancer, the understanding of the context of the surgery differs in Japan and the rest of the world. Three-field lymph node dissection has been unique to Japan, although some reports on its benefits are emerging elsewhere. In addition to three-field lymph node dissection, various efforts are made during surgical procedures to reduce complications at high-volume Japanese healthcare institutions.

Neuropathological changes in auditory brainstem nuclei in cattle with experimentally induced bovine spongiform encephalopathy. J Comp Pathol 2011; 145:302-7. Abstract
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is characterized by the appearance of spongy lesions in the brain, particularly in the brainstem nuclei. This study evaluated the degenerative changes observed in the central auditory brainstem of BSE-challenged cattle. The neuropathological changes in the auditory brainstem nuclei were assessed by determining the severity of vacuolation and the presence of disease-associated prion protein (PrP(Sc)). Sixteen female Holstein-Friesian calves, 2-4 months of age, were inoculated intracerebrally with BSE agent. BSE-challenged animals developed the characteristic clinical signs of BSE approximately 18 months post inoculation (mpi) and advanced neurological signs after 22 mpi. Before the appearance of clinical signs (i.e. at 3, 10, 12 and 16 mpi), vacuolar change was absent or mild and PrP(Sc) deposition was minimal in the auditory brainstem nuclei. The two cattle sacrificed at 18 and 19 mpi had no clinical signs and showed mild vacuolar degeneration and moderate amounts of PrP(Sc) accumulation in the auditory brainstem pathway. In the animals challenged with BSE agent that developed clinical sings (i.e. after 20 mpi), spongy changes were more prominent in the nucleus of the inferior colliculus compared with the other nuclei of the auditory brainstem and the medial geniculate body. Neuropathological changes characterized by spongy lesions accompanied by PrP(Sc) accumulation in the auditory brainstem nuclei of BSE-infected cattle may be associated with hyperacusia.

Transbound Emerg Dis 2011; 58:333-43. Abstract
Twenty-eight calves were exposed to 5 g of homogenized brainstems confirmed as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agents. Two to five animals were sequentially killed for post-mortem analyses 20 months post-inoculation (MPI) at intervals of 6 or 12 months. Samples from animals challenged orally with BSE agents were examined by Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses. Immunolabelled, disease-associated prion protein (PrPsc) was detected in a small portion of follicles in the continuous Peyer's patch from the posterior portion of the small intestine involving the entire ileum and the posterior jejunum but not in the discrete Peyer's patches in the remaining jejunum in preclinical animals at 20, 36, and 48 MPI. The PrPsc-positive cells corresponded to tingible body macrophages on double immunofluorescence labelling. In addition, PrPsc accumulated in 7 of 14 animals in the central nervous system (CNS) after 34 MPI, and five of them developed clinical signs and were killed at 34, 46, 58, and 66 MPI. Two preclinical animals killed at 36 and 48 MPI presented the earliest detectable and smallest deposition of immunolabelled PrPsc in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, the spinal trigeminal nucleus of the medulla oblongata at the obex region, and/or the intermediolateral nucleus of the 13th thoracic segment of the spinal cord. Based on serial killing, no PrPsc was detectable in the CNS, including the medulla oblongata at the obex level, before 30 MPI, by Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses. These results are important for understanding the pathogenesis of BSE.

Abstract
To determine which cell types produce tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF) and its receptors (TNFRI and TNFRII) in bovine endometrium, we investigated the expression and cellular localization of their mRNAs and proteins. TNF transcripts and proteins were co-localized in endometrial epithelial cells, glandular epithelial cells and endothelial cells of microvessels but not in the stromal cells. TNF protein was detected in the lysate and the cultured media of epithelial cells, but was only weakly detected in the stromal cells. Both TNFRI (TNFRSF1A) and TNFRII (TNFRSF1B) transcripts were expressed in the epithelial cells, glandular epithelial cells and the stromal cells, whereas their proteins were weakly expressed in the stroma. TNF mRNA and protein expressions in the cultured epithelial cells were increased by TNF and interleukin-1α, and the TNFRII mRNA expressions were stimulated by oxytocin. Together, TNF secreted by the endometrial cells may locally play a role in regulating uterine function throughout the estrous cycle.

Abstract
Formalin-fixed and paraffin wax-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections are usually used for histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses in prion diseases in animals and man. However, formalin fixation cross-links proteins, reducing disease-associated prion protein (PrP(Sc)) immunolabelling. To detect PrP(Sc) in animals naturally affected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and scrapie, we applied minimal pretreatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This simple pretreatment, combined with enzymatic digestion using proteinase K (PK), was equally effective in the detection of PrP(Sc) in FFPE tissue, and superior in terms of speed, compared with the usual autoclaving method. The most effective results, without any section loss, were obtained with 10 μg/ml PK in phosphate buffered saline containing 0.1% Triton-X at room temperature for 10 min and 150 mM NaOH at 60 °C for 10 min. By this simple procedure, PrP(Sc) was visualized in the brain of animals with BSE and scrapie using a range of anti-PrP primary antibodies.

Abstract
To characterize the biological and biochemical properties of H-type bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a transmission study with a Canadian H-type isolate was performed with bovinized transgenic mice (TgBoPrP), which were inoculated intracerebrally with brain homogenate from cattle with H-type BSE. All mice exhibited characteristic neurologic signs, and the subsequent passage showed a shortened incubation period. The distribution of disease-associated prion protein (PrP(Sc)) was determined by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and paraffin-embedded tissue (PET) blot. Biochemical properties and higher molecular weight of the glycoform pattern were well conserved within mice. Immunolabeled granular PrP(Sc), aggregates, and/or plaque-like deposits were mainly detected in the following brain locations: septal nuclei, subcallosal regions, hypothalamus, paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus, interstitial nucleus of the stria terminalis, and the reticular formation of the midbrain. Weak reactivity was detected by immunohistochemistry and PET blot in the cerebral cortex, most thalamic nuclei, the hippocampus, medulla oblongata, and cerebellum. These findings indicate that the H-type BSE prion has biological and biochemical properties distinct from those of C-type and L-type BSE in TgBoPrP mice, which suggests that TgBoPrP mice constitute a useful animal model to distinguish isolates from BSE-infected cattle.

Abstract
New multichannel Langmuir probe system was developed and installed to Heliotron J. The objective of the new probe is to characterize basic turbulence property and the resulting transport in advanced helical configuration. The probe developed here consists of four sets of triple probe and one pin for floating potential measurement. Initial experiments in neutral beam heating plasma were conducted and fluctuation profile of radial and poloidal electric fields and Reynolds stress were estimated. For precise evaluation of the electric fields and Reynolds stress, a technique to compensate radial change of tilt angle between probe array and magnetic surface was proposed and applied to the initial results obtained in edge region of Heliotron J where the complicated magnetic structure exists.

Abstract
This paper describes the application of the beam emission spectroscopy (BES) to Heliotron J, having the nonsymmetrical helical-magnetic-axis configuration. The spectral and spatial profile of the beam emission has been estimated by the numerical calculation taking the collisional excitation processes between plasmas (electrons/ions) and beam atoms. Two sets of the sightlines with good spatial resolution are presented. One is the optimized viewing chords which have 20 sightlines and observe the whole plasma region with the spatial resolution Δρ less than ±0.055 using the newly designed viewing port. The other is 15 sightlines from the present viewing port of Heliotron J for the preliminary measurement to discuss the feasibility of the density fluctuation measurement by BES. The beam emission has been measured by a monochromator with a CCD camera. A good consistency has been obtained between the spectral profiles of the beam emission measured by the monochromator and the beam emission spectrum deduced by the model calculation. An avalanche photodiode with an interference filter system was also used to evaluate the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the beam emission in the present experimental setup. The modification of the optical system is being planned to improve the S/N ratio, which will enable us to estimate the density fluctuation in Heliotron J.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a lethal complication of acute myocardial infarction, and its operative results are far from good. SUBJECTS Six patients who underwent operations for VSR in our department between 2001 and 2008. All these patients received coronary angiography, which showed 1-vessel disease in 4 patients, 2-vessel disease in 1, and 3-vessel disease in 1. The sites of myocardial infarction were the anteroseptal region in 3 patients and the inferoseptal region in 3. RESULTS Infarct exclusion was conducted in the 3 patients with anteroseptal infarction. Of the 3 patients with inferoseptal infarction, 1 underwent infarct exclusion and 2 Daggett operation. The number of in-hospital deaths was 3 (50%). Residual shunts were observed in 3 out of the 4 patients (75%) who had received infarct exclusion. Two of these 3 patients needed reoperation. The 2 patients with inferoseptal infarction who had undergone Daggett operation presented no residual shunts, and could be easily weaned from the cardiopulmonary bypass. CONCLUSIONS Because the infarct exclusion method frequently shows residual shunts, its technical modifications are required to improve the operative results. The Daggett method can be considered useful in patients with VSR after inferior myocardial infarction.

Abstract
We report the first three-particle coincidence measurement in pseudorapidity (Δη) between a high transverse momentum (p⊥) trigger particle and two lower p⊥ associated particles within azimuth |Δϕ|<0.7 in square root of s(NN)=200 GeV d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Charge ordering properties are exploited to separate the jetlike component and the ridge (long range Δη correlation). The results indicate that the correlation of ridge particles are uniform not only with respect to the trigger particle but also between themselves event by event in our measured Δη. In addition, the production of the ridge appears to be uncorrelated to the presence of the narrow jetlike component.

Abstract
Chitosan-degrading activities induced by glucosamine (GlcN) or N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) were found in a culture filtrate of Trichoderma reesei PC-3-7. One of the chitosan-degrading enzymes was purified to homogeneity by precipitation with ammonium sulfate followed by anion-exchange and hydrophobic-interaction chromatographies. The enzyme was monomeric, and its molecular mass was 93 kDa. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme were 4.0 and 50 degrees C, respectively. The activity was stable in the pH range 6.0 to 9.0 and at a temperature below 50 degrees C. Reaction product analysis from the viscosimetric assay and thin-layer chromatography and H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy clearly indicated that the enzyme was an exo-type chitosanase, exo-beta-d-glucosaminidase, that releases GlcN from the nonreducing end of the chitosan chain. H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy also showed that the exo-beta-d-glucosaminidase produced a beta-form of GlcN, demonstrating that the enzyme is a retaining glycanase. Time-dependent liberation of the reducing sugar from partially acetylated chitosan with exo-beta-d-glucosaminidase and the partially purified exo-beta-d-N-acetylglucosaminidase from T. reesei PC-3-7 suggested that the exo-beta-d-glucosaminidase cleaves the glycosidic link of either GlcN-beta(1-->4)-GlcN or GlcN-beta(1-->4)-GlcNAc.

Abstract
Protoplast fusion of strains derived from Trichoderma reesei QM9414 and QM9136 and the segregation of the resulting fusants were studied. Combinations of protoplasts prepared from young conidia with double amino acid requirements, one of which was a common requirement and the other uncommon, were fused in the presence of polyethylene glycol 6000. Fusants were selected as regenerant colonies requiring only the commonly deficient amino acid. The frequency of fusion was 0.9 x 10 to 4.0 x 10 for the starting conidia and 3.0 x 10 to 4.9 x 10 for the regenerated protoplasts, which was significantly higher than the expected reversion frequencies by mutation. Conidia generated on the fusant colonies showed diverse phenotypes, i.e., parental types (40 to 80%) and nonparental types (20 to 60%). Colonies developed from single conidia of the nonparental phenotype contained special spots called "knobs" that have a higher density of mycelia. The phenotype of the knobs was again varied among prototrophs, parental types, and recombinant types; and their traits were inherited stably. The phenotype of the mycelia in the nonknob part was essentially the same as that of the original conidia and again formed knobs in colonies upon transfer of a piece of mycelia to a fresh medium. The conidial DNA content of the knob clone was almost the same as that of the parents, but that of the fusants was 1.2 to 2.0 times higher than that of the parents. From these results, we conclude that knobs are the segregants from the fusants. One knob clone showed twice the carboxymethyl cellulose hydrolyzing activity of the parents, suggesting the possibility of breeding T. reesei cells by the protoplast fusion technique.

Abstract
Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) operation with low gain by seeding with high-energy, clean pulses is shown to significantly improve the contrast to better than 10(-10) to 10(-11) in a high-intensity Ti:sapphire laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification. In addition to the high-contrast broadband, high-energy output from the final amplifier is achieved with a flat-topped spatial profile of filling factor near 77%. This is the result of pump beam spatial profile homogenization with diffractive optical elements. Final pulse energies exceed 30 J, indicating capability for reaching peak powers in excess of 500 TW.

Abstract
According to the 'hygiene hypothesis', the decreasing incidence of infections in western countries and more recently in developing countries is at the origin of the increasing incidence of both autoimmune and allergic diseases. The hygiene hypothesis is based upon epidemiological data, particularly migration studies, showing that subjects migrating from a low-incidence to a high-incidence country acquire the immune disorders with a high incidence at the first generation. However, these data and others showing a correlation between high disease incidence and high socio-economic level do not prove a causal link between infections and immune disorders. Proof of principle of the hygiene hypothesis is brought by animal models and to a lesser degree by intervention trials in humans. Underlying mechanisms are multiple and complex. They include decreased consumption of homeostatic factors and immunoregulation, involving various regulatory T cell subsets and Toll-like receptor stimulation. These mechanisms could originate, to some extent, from changes in microbiota caused by changes in lifestyle, particularly in inflammatory bowel diseases. Taken together, these data open new therapeutic perspectives in the prevention of autoimmune and allergic diseases.

Abstract
Insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes is a prototypic organ-specific autoimmune disease resulting from the selective destruction of insulin-secreting beta cells within pancreatic islets of Langerhans by an immune-mediated inflammation involving autoreactive CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes which infiltrate pancreatic islets. Current treatment is substitutive, i.e. chronic use of exogenous insulin which, in spite of significant advances, is still associated with major constraints (multiple daily injections, risks of hypoglycaemia) and lack of effectiveness over the long term in preventing severe degenerative complications. Finding a cure for autoimmune diabetes by establishing effective immune-based therapies is a real medical health challenge, as the disease incidence increases steadily in industrialized countries. As the disease affects mainly children and young adults, any candidate immune therapy must therefore be safe and avoid a sustained depression of immune responses with the attendant problems of recurrent infection and drug toxicity. Thus, inducing or restoring immune tolerance to target autoantigens, controlling the pathogenic response while preserving the host reactivity to exogenous/unrelated antigens, appears to be the ideal approach. Our objective is to review the major progress accomplished over the last 20 years towards that aim. In addition, we would like to present another interesting possibility to access new preventive strategies based on the 'hygiene hypothesis', which proposes a causal link between the increasing incidence of autoimmune diseases, including diabetes, and the decrease of the infectious burden. The underlying rationale is to identify microbial-derived compounds mediating the protective activity of infections which could be developed therapeutically.

Abstract
The production of e+ e- pairs for m(e+ e-)<0.3 GeV/c2 and 1<p(T)<5 GeV/c is measured in p+p and Au+Au collisions at square root(S(NN))=200 GeV. An enhanced yield above hadronic sources is observed. Treating the excess as photon internal conversions, the invariant yield of direct photons is deduced. In central Au+Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over p+p is exponential in transverse momentum, with an inverse slope T=221+/-19(stat)+/-19(syst) MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T(init) approximately 300-600 MeV at times of approximately 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the data. Lattice QCD predicts a phase transition to quark gluon plasma at approximately 170 MeV.

Abstract
Proximal osteotomies for forefoot deformity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis have hitherto not been described. We evaluated combination joint-preserving surgery involving three different proximal osteotomies for such deformities. A total of 30 patients (39 feet) with a mean age of 55.6 years (45 to 67) underwent combined first tarsometatarsal fusion and distal realignment, shortening oblique osteotomies of the bases of the second to fourth metatarsals and a fifth-ray osteotomy. The mean follow-up was 36 months (24 to 68). The mean foot function index scores for pain, disability and activity subscales were 18, 23, and 16 respectively. The mean Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot score improved significantly from 52.2 (41 to 68) to 89.6 (78 to 97). Post-operatively, 14 patients had forefoot stiffness, but had no disability. Most patients reported highly satisfactory walking ability. Residual deformity and callosities were absent. The mean hallux valgus and intermetatarsal angles decreased from 47.0° (20° to 67°) to 9.0° (2° to 23°) and from 14.1° (9° to 20°) to 4.6° (1° to 10°), respectively. Four patients had further surgery including removal of hardware in three and a fifth-ray osteotomy in one. With good peri-operative medical management of rheumatoid arthritis, surgical repositioning of the metatarsophalangeal joint by metatarsal shortening and consequent relaxing of surrounding soft tissues can be successful. In early to intermediate stages of the disease, it can be performed in preference to joint-sacrificing procedures.

Abstract
Parity-odd domains, corresponding to nontrivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the system's orbital momentum axis. We investigate a three-particle azimuthal correlator which is a P even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We report measurements of charged hadrons near center-of-mass rapidity with this observable in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at square root of s(NN) = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. A signal consistent with several expectations from the theory is detected. We discuss possible contributions from other effects that are not related to parity violation.

Abstract
Laser light reflection by a relativistically moving electron density modulation (flying mirror) in a wake wave generated in a plasma by a high intensity laser pulse is investigated experimentally. A counterpropagating laser pulse is reflected and upshifted in frequency with a multiplication factor of 37-66, corresponding to the extreme ultraviolet wavelength. The demonstrated flying mirror reflectivity (from 3 x 10(-6) to 2 x 10(-5), and from 1.3 x 10(-4) to 0.6 x 10(-3), for the photon number and pulse energy, respectively) is close to the theoretical estimate for the parameters of the experiment.

Impaired gastric ulcer healing in diabetic mice: role of methylglyoxal. JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY : AN OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE POLISH PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY 2009; 60 Suppl 7:123-130. Abstract
Methylglyoxal is a reactive dicarbonyl compound produced from cellular glycolytic intermediates that reacts non-enzymatically with proteins to form products such as argpyrimidine at arginine residue. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of methylglyoxal in the delayed healing of gastric ulcer in diabetes, and to identify the methylglyoxal-modified proteins as a target molecule of this modification. Using male C57BL/6 mice, diabetes was induced by a single i.p. injection of streptozotocin and gastric ulcers were produced by the focal application of 40% of acetic acid to the serosal surface of the stomach. In order to evaluate the effect of OPB-9195, an inhibitor of methylglyoxal modification, on gastric ulcer healing, mice were given orally OPB-9195 (30 mg/kg) twice daily for 14 days, one week before and after the injection of streptozotocin. The area of gastric ulcer on day 7 was significantly increased in diabetic mice compared to non-diabetic mice, indicating delayed ulcer healing. This increase in ulcer area in diabetic mice was significantly reversed by the treatment with OPB-9195 without affecting blood glucose levels. Proteomics analysis showed the methylglyoxal-modification of peroxiredoxin 6 proteins in the diabetic gastric mucosa around gastric ulcer, and this modification was markedly inhibited by the treatment with OPB-9195. In conclusion, the present study suggests a link of increased methylglyoxal modification of proteins including peroxiredoxin 6 to the delayed gastric ulcer healing in diabetes, and also shows the therapeutic potential of the inhibitor of methylglyoxal modification for the treatment of diabetic gastric ulcers.

Abstract
We report a case of Brugada syndrome with a high defibrillation threshold (DFT) in whom a subcutaneous array lead was used to lower the DFT in combination with a transvenous right ventricular defibrillation lead. The patient had previously received pacemaker implantation due to sick sinus syndrome. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) with a transvenous right ventricular defibrillation lead alone required a high DFT. A subcutaneous array lead improved defibrillation efficacy in combination with a right ventricular lead. These data suggest that a subcutaneous array lead facilitates implantation of an effective ICD lead system in patients requiring a high DFT.

Abstract
A high stability electron bunch is generated by laser wakefield acceleration with the help of a colliding laser pulse. The wakefield is generated by a laser pulse; the second laser pulse collides with the first pulse at 180 degrees and at 135 degrees realizing optical injection of an electron bunch. The electron bunch has high stability and high reproducibility compared with single pulse electron generation. In the case of 180 degrees collision, special measures have been taken to prevent damage. In the case of 135 degrees collision, since the second pulse is countercrossing, it cannot damage the laser system.

Growth of long range forward-backward multiplicity correlations with centrality in Au + Au collisions at square root of sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2009; 103:172301. Abstract
Forward-backward multiplicity correlation strengths have been measured with the STAR detector for Au + Au and p + p collisions at square root of s(NN) = 200 GeV. Strong short- and long-range correlations (LRC) are seen in central Au + Au collisions. The magnitude of these correlations decrease with decreasing centrality until only short-range correlations are observed in peripheral Au + Au collisions. Both the dual parton model (DPM) and the color glass condensate (CGC) predict the existence of the long-range correlations. In the DPM, the fluctuation in the number of elementary (parton) inelastic collisions produces the LRC. In the CGC, longitudinal color flux tubes generate the LRC. The data are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of the DPM and indicate the presence of multiple parton interactions.

Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations of charged kaons are used to probe Au+Au collisions at sqrt[S(NN)]=200 GeV and are compared to charged pion probes, which have a larger hadronic scattering cross section. Three-dimensional Gaussian source radii are extracted, along with a one-dimensional kaon emission source function. The centrality dependences of the three Gaussian radii are well described by a single linear function of N(part)1/3 with a zero intercept. Imaging analysis shows a deviation from a Gaussian tail at r greater than or approximately equal to 10 fm, although the bulk emission at lower radius is well described by a Gaussian. The presence of a non-Gaussian tail in the kaon source reaffirms that the particle emission region in a heavy-ion collision is extended, and that similar measurements with pions are not solely due to the decay of long-lived resonances.

Perinatal survivin is essential for the establishment of pancreatic beta cell mass in mice. Diabetologia 2009; 52:2130-41. Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Pancreatic beta cells undergo dynamic remodelling during the perinatal period, with enhanced neogenesis, proliferation and apoptosis observed. The molecular mechanisms responsible for these processes have yet to be elucidated. Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosis, first described as being exclusively expressed in tumour and embryonic tissues with regulatory functions in mitosis and apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to define the essential physiological role of survivin in the pancreas. METHODS The expression profile of survivin was assessed in the mouse pancreas, and we generated a Pdx1 promoter-driven Survivin (also known as Birc5) knockout mouse using the Cre-loxP recombination system to determine the essential physiological function of survivin in the pancreas. RESULTS Survivin is transiently expressed in mouse pancreatic islets during the embryonic and neonatal periods. Targeted deletion of Survivin in the pancreas resulted in a significant decline in beta cell mass throughout the perinatal period, leading to glucose intolerance in the adult. Survivin-deficient islets showed decreased cell proliferation as a result of a delay in cell cycle progression with perturbations in cell cycle proteins. Survivin did not, however, play an essential role in beta cell apoptosis either during the physiological remodelling period or in response to streptozotocin. Islet development, islet architecture, microvasculature and apoptosis were not affected by the absence of survivin in the pancreas. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Survivin expression in the pancreatic islets during the perinatal remodelling period is essential for the establishment of beta cell mass through cell cycle regulation.
