The Sex Pheromone of the Silver Y Moth Chrysodeixis eriosoma (Doubleday) in New Zealand

An investigation of the sex pheromone of the New Zealand Silver Y Moth Chrysodeixis erio­soma (Doubleday), formerly described as Plusia chalcites (Esper) resulted in the identification of the major active components as 7Z-and 9Z-dodecenyl acetates, in approx. 97:3 ratio. This blend was attractive to C. eriosoma males in the field and in a laboratory flight tunnel. 5Z-D odecenyl acetate and 7Z-dodecenyl alcohol inhibited this response in the field. C. eriosoma was also attract­ed to the 5:1 blend of 7Z-dodecenyl acetate and 9Z-tetradecenyl acetate reported as the phero­mone of Chrysodeixis (Plusia) chalcites in the western Palaearctic. Specialist receptor cells for all 5 compounds mentioned were found in male antennal sensilla in both species.

Ethyl decanoate as a major component in the defensive secretion of two new zealand aleocharine (staphylinidae) beetles-Tramiathaea cornigera (broun) andThamiaraea fuscicornis (broun)

The defensive secretions of bothTramiathaea cornigera andThamiaraea fuscicornis contain undecane, toluquinone, ethyl decanoate and smaller amounts of other esters. The presence of esters particularly ethyl decanoate as a major component sets these two beetles apart chemically not only among the staphylinids but also within the subfamily Aleocharinae.

Female-produced sexual pheromone ofSceliodes cordalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

(E)-11-Hexadecen-1-yl acetate and (E)-11-hexadecen-1-ol were identified in extracts from the abdominal pheromone gland of femaleSceliodes cordalis and in a 1∶1 ratio acted as a potent field attractant for males. Sustained upwind flight by males to this mixture in a wind tunnel confirmed the identity of these compounds as major components of the natural sex pheromone of this species. The synthetic pheromone was used to define the annual limits of male flight activity. In the presence of 1-10 μg of pheromone per liter of air, the mating rate of laboratory populations was halved. TheZ isomers of both pheromone components decreased the numbers of males captured in traps baited with virgin females in the field and inhibited upwind flight in the wind tunnel. The attraction of males ofMnesictena flavidalis to virgin females ofS. cordalis and synthetic mixtures was demonstrated to be due to the acetate component alone. MaleEudonia sp. nrlinealis were captured by (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate.

Time-saving impact of an algorithm to identify potential surgical site infections

OBJECTIVE

To develop and validate a partially automated algorithm to identify surgical site infections (SSIs) using commonly available electronic data to reduce manual chart review.

DESIGN

Retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing specific surgical procedures over a 4-year period from 2007 through 2010 (algorithm development cohort) or over a 3-month period from January 2011 through March 2011 (algorithm validation cohort).

SETTING

A single academic safety-net hospital in a major metropolitan area.

PATIENTS

Patients undergoing at least 1 included surgical procedure during the study period.

METHODS

Procedures were identified in the National Healthcare Safety Network; SSIs were identified by manual chart review. Commonly available electronic data, including microbiologic, laboratory, and administrative data, were identified via a clinical data warehouse. Algorithms using combinations of these electronic variables were constructed and assessed for their ability to identify SSIs and reduce chart review.

RESULTS

The most efficient algorithm identified in the development cohort combined microbiologic data with postoperative procedure and diagnosis codes. This algorithm resulted in 100% sensitivity and 85% specificity. Time savings from the algorithm was almost 600 person-hours of chart review. The algorithm demonstrated similar sensitivity on application to the validation cohort.

CONCLUSIONS

A partially automated algorithm to identify potential SSIs was highly sensitive and dramatically reduced the amount of manual chart review required of infection control personnel during SSI surveillance.

Distinct and overlapping genomic profiles and antiviral effects of Interferon-λ and -α on HCV-infected and noninfected hepatoma cells

Recently, several SNPs in the region of the IL28B (IFN-λ) gene have been associated with spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and enhanced cure rates for IFN-alfa-based therapies, suggesting a potential correlation between IFN-λ and the ability to clear HCV. To understand the mechanism of IFN-λ's as compared to IFN-α's antiviral activity, we performed a comprehensive analysis of their anti-HCV effects, whole genome transcriptome profiling with validation, and signalling of IFN-α and IFN-λ using J6/JFH-1 and Huh7.5 cells in vitro. IFN-λ and IFN-α exhibited comparable anti-HCV activity and gene expression profiles in Huh7.5 cells. While the majority of genes induced by IFN-α and IFN-λ were similar, IFN-λ exhibits profound, but delayed kinetics of IFN-stimulated genes (ISG) induction, while IFN-α induced more rapid induction of ISGs. Furthermore, the increased induction of ISG expression by IFN-λ correlated with up-regulation of IFN-λ receptor (IL-28RA) expression and more prolonged activation of the Jak-STAT signalling pathway. The findings from our comparative analysis of IFN-α and IFN-λ in HCV-infected and noninfected cells support the clinical use of IFN-λ as a potential alternative to IFN-α in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.

Comparison of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and dynamic contrast-enhanced CT biomarkers in bladder cancer

Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) is frequently used to provide response biomarkers in clinical trials of novel cancer therapeutics but assessment of their physiological accuracy is difficult. DCE-CT provides an independent probe of similar pharmacokinetic processes and may be modeled in the same way as DCE-MRI to provide purportedly equivalent physiological parameters. In this study, DCE-MRI and DCE-CT were directly compared in subjects with primary bladder cancer to assess the degree to which the model parameters report modeled physiology rather than artefacts of the measurement technique and to determine the interchangeability of the techniques in a clinical trial setting. The biomarker K(trans) obtained by fitting an extended version of the Kety model voxelwise to both DCE-MRI and DCE-CT data was in excellent agreement (mean across subjects was 0.085 ± 0.030 min(-1) for DCE-MRI and 0.087 ± 0.033 min(-1) for DCE-CT, intermodality coefficient of variation 9%). The parameter v(p) derived from DCE-CT was significantly greater than that derived from DCE-MRI (0.018 ± 0.006 compared to 0.009 ± 0.008, P = 0.0007) and v(e) was in reasonable agreement only for low values. The study provides evidence that the biomarker K(trans) is a robust parameter indicative of the underlying physiology and relatively independent of the method of measurement.

Characteristics of prion-filtered red cells suspended in pathogen-inactivated plasma (MB treated or solvent-detergent treated) for neonatal exchange transfusion

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Neonates undergoing exchange transfusion require <5-day-old red cells suspended in plasma. This study assesses the effect of replacing the saline, adenine, glucose and mannitol (SAGM) of prion reduced (P-Capt) red cells with either methylene blue-treated plasma (MBTFFP) or OctaplasLG to reduce the risk of variant Creutzfelt-Jakob disease transmission.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty leucoreduced red cell units in SAGM were prion reduced on day 1. The SAGM was replaced by MBTFFP (n=10) or OctaplasLG (n=10). The units were irradiated and stored at 4°C for 24 h. A further 20 units were stored for 5 days before being processed as above. Haemolysis (%), potassium, ATP, 2,3-DPG and plasma proteins were measured.

RESULTS

Haemolysis remained low (≤0·16%). Following irradiation and storage, red cells in both types of plasma showed similar changes in potassium and ATP concentrations. The 2,3-DPG concentrations were well maintained although lower in red cells in OctaplasLG compared with those in MBTFFP (4·79 vs. 6·83 μmoles/g Hb on day 6). MBTFFP contained lower concentrations of fibrinogen, FV and FVIII. In OctaplasLG, alpha-2-antiplasmin was approximately 0·4 U/ml lower than in MBTFFP. After 24 h at 4°C, free protein S in OctaplasLG fell from 0·82 to 0·57 IU/ml. Other plasma proteins, in both types of plasma, were stable.

CONCLUSIONS

Red cells in both types of plasma demonstrated similar storage characteristics. The plasma proteins, except protein S in OctaplasLG, were stable over 24 h at 4°C in both types of plasma, and low FVIII concentrations were noted in the MBTFFP (group O) units used.

Cumulative radiation dose in patients admitted with subarachnoid hemorrhage: a prospective study using a self-developing film badge

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

While considerable attention has been directed to reducing the x-ray dose of individual imaging studies, there is little information available on the cumulative dose during imaging-intensive hospitalizations. We used a radiation-sensitive badge on 12 patients admitted with SAH to determine if this approach was feasible and to measure the extent of their x-ray exposure.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

After obtaining informed consent, we assigned a badge to each of 12 patients and used it for all brain imaging studies during their ICU stay. Cumulative dose was determined by quantifying exposure on the badge and correlating it with the number and type of examinations.

RESULTS

The average skin dose for the 3 patients who had only diagnostic DSA without endovascular intervention was 0.4 Gy (0.2-0.6 Gy). The average skin dose of the 8 patients who had both diagnostic DSA and interventions (eg, intra-arterial treatment of vasospasm and coiling of aneurysms) was 0.9 Gy (1.8-0.4 Gy). One patient had only CT examinations. There was no effort made to include or exclude the badge in the working view during interventions.

CONCLUSIONS

It is feasible to incorporate a film badge that uses a visual scale to monitor the x-ray dose into the care of hospitalized patients. Cumulative skin doses in excess of 1 Gy were not uncommon (3/12) in this group of patients with acute SAH. This approach could provide a measure of the cumulative dose and is a convenient tool to quantify the effect of dose-reduction strategies.

Oxygen administration and monitoring for ward adult patients in a teaching hospital

AIM

The aims of this study were to describe oxygen administration and respiratory monitoring of ward patients in a tertiary teaching hospital, and to assess differences in characteristics and outcomes between patients who are receiving versus are not receiving oxygen.

METHODS

Prospective clinical audit of all non-ventilated adult ward patients in a tertiary teaching hospital in Melbourne, Victoria on 26 August 2009.

RESULTS

All 323 eligible patients were audited (medical 218, surgical 105). At assessment, 76 patients (24%) were on oxygen therapy and of these, 57 patients (74%) received oxygen by nasal prongs. Overall, oxygen saturation was documented in 301 (93.2%) patients and respiratory rate (RR) documented in 283 patients (87.6%). Patients receiving oxygen had a lower median SpO(2) (94% vs 96%, P < 0.0001), higher median RR (20/min vs 18/min, P < 0.0005); and were older (68.8 v 63.1 years, P= 0.0094). The in-hospital mortality of patients receiving oxygen therapy was 15.8% compared with 5.3% for those not on oxygen (P < 0.0056).

CONCLUSION

Oxygen is administered to one-quarter of ward patients in our hospital. Oxygen saturation and RR are not documented in approximately 10% of patients. Oxygen therapy in ward patients identifies individuals with increased mortality. Continuing educational interventions to increase awareness of the high-risk status of these patients and strategies to detect patients at risk of hypoxaemia are needed.
