Abstract
INTRODUCTION By minimising the invasiveness of a surgical intervention, a reduction of operative trauma can be achieved. AIM AND METHODS The aim of this study was based on a theoretical approach to investigate (i) the feasibility of the SP approach and its overall costs, and, furthermore, (ii) the patients' outcome based on simple perioperative parameters available in daily clinical practice. Therefore, single-port (SP) and laparoscopic appendectomies (LA) were compared using a matched-pair analysis. As a prediction, an absolute match between the criteria histology, sex and ASA stage was required. RESULTS From 01/01/2009 to 12/31/2010, 196 (60 % were females) consecutive patients underwent appendectomy. Out of them, in 23 patients with either SP or LA appendectomy the predictions for matched-pair analysis (congruence in histopathological finding, sex and ASA criteria) were fulfilled. The operating time was the target criterion for the feasibility of the new surgical method (SP), which could be shortened as seen by comparing SP No. 1-10 with 11-23 (54.6 ± 19.8 min vs. 28.5 ± 18.9 min) expressing the typical effect of a learning curve. The times were similar to those for LA. The postoperative hospital stay and complication rate used to appropriately assess patient outcome did not show a significant difference if comparing SP and LA. Based on the use of single ports, which can be re-used (which has been also a further target) in SP (34.8 %) at the end of the investigation period, SP and LA can be considered comparable surgical techniques with regard to operating times, middle-term outcome and general costs. CONCLUSION SP is (in case of well-developed laparoscopic expertise) a surgical method that can be easily inaugurated and considered as a feasible approach in daily surgical practice; it is comparable to LA with regard to outcome and general costs. Based on this, SP can be gradually added to the spectrum of surgical procedures in clinical practice and can be performed in suitable cases. A further systematic institutional or even country-wide case register appears to be recommendable to recruit a larger case number and, thus, to achieve a better knowledge on the perioperative management as well as the especially interesting long-term outcome for an appropriate assessment of treatment quality.

Abstract
Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time-reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B(0) or B(0)), and J/ψK(L)(0) or ccK(S)(0) final states (referred to as B(+) or B(-)), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, B(0) → B(-) and B(-) → B(0), as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 × 10(6) BB pairs produced in Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔS(T)(+) = -1.37 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and ΔS(T)(-) = 1.17 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.11(syst). These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

Abstract
The photon spectrum in the inclusive electromagnetic radiative decays of the B meson, B → X(s)γ plus B → X(d)γ, is studied using a data sample of (382.8 ± 4.2) × 10(6)Υ(4S) → BB decays collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. The spectrum is used to extract the branching fraction B(B → X(s)γ) = (3.21 ± 0.33) × 10(-4) for E(γ) >1.8 GeV and the direct CP asymmetry A(CP) (B → X(s+d)γ) = 0.057 ± 0.063. The effects of detector resolution and Doppler smearing are unfolded to measure the photon energy spectrum in the B meson rest frame.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of oral moxifloxacin in outpatients with respiratory tract infections treated in general practices in Germany with the focus on community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS, DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This was an open-label, prospective, uncontrolled, post-marketing surveillance study undertaken between October 2001 and June 2002. Symptoms associated with pneumonia were documented at baseline and at follow-up visits. A general assessment was given and the number of days until improvement/cure were recorded by the attending physician at the end of therapy. RESULTS A total of 9036 patients were treated with moxifloxacin, of which 1467 had CAP. The recommended dosage of moxifloxacin (400mg once daily) was used in 97.8% of all CAP patients. Between the initial and final follow-up visits, symptoms of CAP were either improved or cured in 90-99% of patients. More than half of the patients showed improvement after 3 days (54.2%); 89.2% of patients were improved after 5 days. The mean time for patients to recover was 8.0 +/- 2.7 days, with 88.7% of patients recovered by day 10 of treatment. Physicians rated moxifloxacin therapy as 'very good' or 'good' in 96.6% of patients and virtually all favoured prescribing moxifloxacin again. Ten patients (0.7%) reported adverse events during moxifloxacin therapy, mostly gastrointestinal disturbances. CONCLUSIONS Moxifloxacin is a very effective and safe treatment for patients with CAP and is highly accepted by physicians and patients because of rapid symptom improvement and good tolerability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To monitor the efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin in respiratory tract infections (RTIs) focussing on acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB). METHODS Patients with RTIs could be enrolled in this open-label, prospective, non-controlled post-marketing surveillance study from October 2001 until June 2002 unless moxifloxacin was contraindicated. At the initial visit, data were recorded on patient demographics, diagnosis and clinical symptoms. Two follow-up examinations could be performed to determine cure or improvement based on clinical symptoms, and to record adverse events. Clinical symptoms including fever, cough and purulent sputum were assessed individually. Efficacy, tolerability and patient acceptance were assessed globally at the final visit. RESULTS Of 9036 enrolled patients, 4328 had AECB, most of whom were treated with moxifloxacin at a daily dose of 400mg. Mean +/- SD time to clinical improvement was 3.4 +/- 1.5 days, and mean +/- SD time to clinical cure was 6.6 +/- 2.4 days. Cure rates were 39.4% at day 5 and 94.3% at day 10. By day 6, the proportion of patients with severe cough decreased from 85.4% at the initial visit to 6.9%, and those with severe dyspnoea from 22.5% to 1.2%. Purulent sputum was absent within 4 days in the majority of cases. Physicians rated efficacy, tolerability and patient acceptance as 'very good' or 'good' in approximately 95% of patients. There were 59 adverse events in 44 (1.0%) patients, most frequently gastrointestinal and nervous system disorders. CONCLUSIONS This study further confirms that AECB patients treated with moxifloxacin benefit from more rapid symptom relief and that this therapy option is well accepted in general practice.

Abstract
Based on the full BABAR data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*))=B(B[over ¯]→D(*)τ(-)ν[over ¯](τ))/B(B[over ¯]→D(*)ℓ(ℓ)(-)ν[over ¯](ℓ)), where ℓ is either e or μ. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D)=0.440±0.058±0.042 and R(D(*))=0.332±0.024±0.018, which exceed the standard model expectations by 2.0σ and 2.7σ, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4σ level. This excess cannot be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model.

Abstract
Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the standard model-dark-sector mixing angle and the dark-sector coupling constant.

Abstract
We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A(0)) produced in radiative decays of an Υ(2S) or Υ(3S) meson, Υ→γA(0). The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Υ(3S) and Υ(2S) center-of-mass energies and include (121.3±1.2)×10(6) Υ(3S) and (98.3±0.9)×10(6) Υ(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Υ(nS)→γA(0))B(A(0)→hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1×10(-6) for an A(0) mass of 0.3 GeV/c(2) to 8×10(-5) at 7 GeV/c(2).

Abstract
There are conditions that preclude the use of the posterior interosseous flap for reconstruction of the dorsum of the hand. Based on a series of 34 cases, these conditions are outlined and alternative solutions discussed. The posterior interosseous flap was employed for closure in 30 cases. In four cases different methods were used due to severe trauma to the wrist and distal forearm with potential impairment of the pedicle, a complex defect requiring a composite flap and an anatomical variation. Thin free flaps were employed alternatively. All flaps survived but there was marginal flap necrosis in two posterior interosseous flaps. The posterior interosseous flap proved its usefulness and reliability in reconstruction of the hand in this series. In four cases, free lateral arm and temporoparietal fascial flaps were employed. Flaps based on the main vessels of the forearm were not used due to their significant donor site morbidity.

Abstract
We report the observation of the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) based on 342 fb(-1) of data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+ e- storage rings at SLAC. A simultaneous fit to three D(s)(+) decay chains is performed to extract the signal yield from measurements of the squared missing mass in the B meson decay. We observe the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) with a significance greater than 5 standard deviations (including systematic uncertainties) and measure its branching fraction to be B(B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ)) = [6.13(-1.03)(+1.04)(stat)±0.43(syst)±0.51(B(D(s)))]×10(-4), where the last error reflects the limited knowledge of the D(s) branching fractions.

Abstract
We search for single-photon decays of the Υ(1S) resonance, Υ → γ + invisible, where the invisible state is either a particle of definite mass, such as a light Higgs boson A⁰, or a pair of dark matter particles, χχ. Both A⁰ and χ are assumed to have zero spin. We tag Υ(1S) decays with a dipion transition Υ(2S) → π⁺π⁻Υ(1S) and look for events with a single energetic photon and significant missing energy. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range m(A⁰) ≤ 9.2 GeV and m(χ) ≤ 4.5 GeV in the sample of 98 × 10⁶ Υ(2S) decays collected with the BABAR detector and set stringent limits on new physics models that contain light dark matter states.

Abstract
PURPOSE Transcranial perfusion sonography (TPS) is an emerging noninvasive bedside method for evaluating brain perfusion. The purpose was to assess the feasibility of a low MI/almost real-time frame rate approach and to test its intra-/interobserver variability. MATERIALS AND METHODS 10 healthy volunteers were investigated 3 times with TPS at a low MI (1.0) and a high frame rate (8.3 Hz). Investigations were performed by 2 sonographers in a cross-over design: 1.) twofold measurements each with 5 volunteers (intraobserver test), and 2.) single measurements of the other 5 volunteers (interobserver test). From 8 established regions of interest (ROI), time-intensity curves (TIC) with the following parameters were calculated: peak intensity (PI), time-to-PI (TTP), area-under-curve (AUC), and cerebral transit time (CTT). The TIC quality was described by the coefficient of determination. TIC parameters were presented descriptively. Intra- and interobserver variability was tested by Spearman's correlation. RESULTS The overall quality of the TIC was very good (mean r(2) = 0.92, 0.87 - 0.97). TTP (25.7 - 28.1 sec; mean 26.8 sec) and CTT (8.2 - 10.7 sec; mean 9.9 sec) were the most robust parameters. The intraobserver variability was lower with the more experienced sonographer (r = 0.70 vs. r = 0.29). The interobserver reliability was r = 0.34 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Low MI TPS allows for nearly real-time imaging facilitating probe control. Sound sonographer experience allows for a high reliability and makes TPS an interesting tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of perfusion changes, e. g. in stroke or anti-angiogenic brain tumor therapy.

Abstract
Compensated respiratory acidosis has been observed in a significant number of patients with active vestibular disease. We therefore hypothesized that the inner ear may play an unrecognized integral role in respiratory control. To test this premise, we investigated whether mice with induced inner ear injury demonstrated any alteration in their respiratory response to inhaled carbon dioxide (CO(2)). Experimental mice and control mice were included in two separate experiments. Intra-tympanic gentamycin injections were administered to induce inner ear damage in experimental animals. Hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction were tested 1-week after injections to confirm presence of inner ear insult, following which the animal's respiratory response to inhalation of 8% CO(2) was examined. Mice with inner ear injury (n=60) displayed a significantly diminished hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR). This contrasted with the normal HCVR seen in control mice that had not undergone tympanic injections (n=30), controls that received tympanic injections with saline (n=5), and controls that had gentamicin administered systemically (n=5). In response to inspired CO(2), the mean respiratory frequency of control mice increased by an average of 50% over their baseline values for both parts of the experiment. In contrast, the ear-damaged experimental group mean values increased by only three breaths per minute (bpm) (2%) in the first experiment and by 28 bpm (11%) in the second experiment. Inner ear damage significantly reduces the respiratory response to CO(2) inhalation. In addition to the established role of the inner ear organ in hearing and balance, this alludes to an unidentified function of the inner ear and its interconnecting neuronal pathways in respiratory regulation. This finding may offer valuable new clues for disease states with abnormal respiratory control where inner ear dysfunction may be present.

Abstract
We present a search for f(J)(2220) production in radiative J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) decays using 460 fb⁻¹ of data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e(+)e⁻ collider. The f(J)(2220) is searched for in the decays to K(+)K⁻ and K(S)⁰K(S)⁰. No evidence of this resonance is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the branching fractions for J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) and f(J)(2220)→K(+)K⁻(K(S)⁰K(S)⁰) as a function of spin and helicity are set at the level of 10⁻⁵, below the central values reported by the Mark III experiment.
