Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The progression of atherosclerosis is related to various factors. Although antiplatelet therapy is used for the management of acute ischemic stroke and for the prevention of recurrent stroke, the antiplatelet agent cilostazol may also reduce restenosis after stent implantation in any vessel. This study was performed to assess the impact of cilostazol on plaque progression in the carotid artery contralateral to a stented artery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-five patients who underwent contralateral CAS who also had ipsilateral 0%-79% ICS were enrolled. ICS was assessed by duplex sonography every 6 months and by MR imaging/angiography, and digital subtraction angiography if necessary, every 12 months according to the NASCET method. Patient age, sex, past history, and perioperative medical conditions were recorded. RESULTS While 22.1% of patients experienced disease progression, symptomatic ipsilateral stroke occurred in only 1.1% of patients over 36.2 ± 18.8 months. On multivariate analysis, precarotid stenosis (HR per 10% increase, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.43-3.05; P < .001) and cilostazol use (HR 0.16; 95% CI, 0.03-0.85; P = .03) were independent predictors for the progression of ICS. CONCLUSIONS A higher degree of initial stenosis is associated with progression of asymptomatic ICS. Cilostazol may reduce the rate of disease progression in patients with asymptomatic ICS.

Abstract
Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a malignant neoplasia of vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Our previous report on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, and their receptors in canine HSA suggested an autocrine/ paracrine mechanism of tumor growth. However, the influence of other angiogenic growth factors in canine HSA was not elucidated; therefore, the expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptors was investigated by immunohistochemical analysis. Forty-six canine HSAs and 21 canine cutaneous hemangiomas (HAs) were analyzed. For immunohistochemistry, anti-PDGF-BB, anti-PDGFR-α, and anti-PDGFR-β antibodies were utilized as primary antibodies. Immunoreactivities were scored as strongly positive (>25% positive neoplastic cells), weakly positive (1-25% positive neoplastic cells), and negative if not staining at all. In cutaneous HA, 33.3% and 57.1% of cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, and 43.5% and 13.0% of HSAs were strongly and weakly positive for PDGF-BB, respectively. Moreover, 38.1% and 28.6% of cutaneous HAs cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, and 23.9% and 4.3% of HSAs cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, for PDGFR-α. Thirty-five HSAs cases (76.1%) were strongly positive, and the remaining 11 (23.9%) were weakly positive for PDGFR-β. In contrast, 18 (72.0%) cutaneous HAs were negative, and only 3 cases (12.0%) were weakly positive, for PDGFR-β. The proportion of strongly positive cases of HSAs was significantly higher than that of cutaneous HA for PDGFR-β (P<0.01), while PDGFR-α was highly expressed in cutaneous HA and may be related to pathogenesis of cutaneous HA. Therefore, PDGFR-β may be associated with the malignant nature of canine HSA.

Abstract
The specific signalling pathways that are deregulated in canine endothelial tumours have not yet fully elucidated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine activation of the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) signalling pathway in spontaneously arising canine haemangiomas (HAs) and haemangiosarcomas (HSAs) in order to identify novel molecular targets for treatment. Surgically-resected samples of HA (n = 27), HSA (n = 37), granulation tissue (n = 4) and normal skin (n = 4) were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Approximately 80% of the HSA samples had moderate to intense expression of phosphorylated Akt at Ser473 (p-Akt Ser473), p-Akt Thr308, p-4E-BP1 Thr37/46 and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E, which was significantly higher than in the HAs and was similar to the expression in activated endothelial cells (ECs). Although p-mTOR complex1 (p-mTORC1) Ser2448 was expressed by most of the activated ECs, only 35% of the HSA samples had weak to moderate expression. Because mTORC2 and phosphorylates Akt Ser473 was activated in HSA samples, the present findings suggest that the mTORC2/Akt/4E-BP1 pathway, regulated independently of mTORC1, may be important for targeting therapy in canine HSAs.

Abstract
The double-differential cross sections for the (208)Pb and (90)Zr(t,(3)He) reactions at 300 MeV/u have been measured at the RI Beam Factory at RIKEN. This was the first physics experiment with the SHARAQ magnetic spectrometer. The combined analysis of the present (t,(3)He) data and previous (n,p) data provides the clearest identification for the β(+) isovector spin monopole resonance both in the (208)Tl and (90)Y nuclei, and puts the observations of this giant resonance on a firm foundation. The measured distributions of the (t,(3)He) monopole cross sections were well reproduced by the distorted-wave Born approximation calculation, where the target transition density was calculated with the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus random-phase approximation using the T43 Skyrme interaction. A major part of the expected β(+) isovector spin monopole strength was found in the measured cross section spectra.

Abstract
An 11-year-old male Bearded Collie was brought to the Gifu University Animal Medical Centre with a skin mass on the lateral right thigh. Physical examination revealed a 30 × 65-mm oval mass with an alopecic and ulcerated surface. Histopathology of the surgically excised sample confirmed malignant trichoepithelioma. Five months after the surgery, the dog experienced lumbar pain resulting from metastasis to the lumbar vertebrae. Radiation therapy (RT) was performed and it alleviated the lumbar pain. Nine months after the surgery, multiple skin metastases were identified. RT was performed at each occurrence, which reduced the size of each tumour and resulted in a partial response; however, systemic metastasis occurred and the dog died 17 months after the initial surgery. Canine malignant trichoepithelioma is a rare tumour, so an effective treatment has not been determined. Data from our case study indicate that RT has potential for pain control of primary and metastatic malignant trichoepithelioma.

Abstract
By using a new member of the neurotropic equine herpesviruses, EHV-9, which induced encephalitis in various species via various routes, an ocular infection model was developed in suckling hamsters. The suckling hamsters were inoculated with EHV-9 via the conjunctival route and were sacrificed after 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 120, and 144 hours (h) post inoculation (PI). Three horizontal sections of the brains, including the eyes and cranial cavity, were examined histologically to assess the viral kinetics and time-course neuropathological alterations using a panoramic view. At 6 to 24 h PI, there were various degrees of necrosis in the conjunctival epithelial cells, as well as frequent mononuclear cell infiltrations in the lamina propria and the tarsus of the eyelid, and frequent myositis of the eyelid muscles. At 96 h PI, encephalitis was observed in the brainstem at the level of the pons and cerebellum. EHV-9 antigen immunoreactivity was detected in the macrophages circulating in the eyelid and around the fine nerve endings supplying the eyelid, the nerves of the extraocular muscles, and the lacrimal glands from 6 h to 144 h PI. At 96 h PI, the viral antigen immunoreactivity was detected in the brainstem at the level of the pons and cerebellum. These results suggest that EHV-9 invaded the brain via the trigeminal nerve in addition to the abducent, oculomotor, and facial nerves. This conjunctival EHV-9 suckling hamster model may be useful in assessing the neuronal spread of neuropathogenic viruses via the eyes to the brain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE RNF213 was recently reported as a susceptibility gene for moyamoya disease (MMD). Our aim was to clarify the correlation between the RNF213 genotype and MMD phenotype. METHODS The entire coding region of the RNF213 gene was sequenced in 204 patients with MMD, and corresponding variants were checked in 62 pairs of parents, 13 mothers and 4 fathers of the patients, and 283 normal controls. Clinical information was collected. Genotype-phenotype correlations were statistically analyzed. RESULTS The c.14576G>A variant was identified in 95.1% of patients with familial MMD, 79.2% of patients with sporadic MMD, and 1.8% of controls, thus confirming its association with MMD, with an odds ratio of 259 and p < 0.001 for either heterozygotes or homozygotes. Homozygous c.14576G>A was observed in 15 patients but not in the controls and unaffected parents. The incidence rate for homozygotes was calculated to be >78%. Homozygotes had a significantly earlier age at onset compared with heterozygotes or wild types (median age at onset 3, 7, and 8 years, respectively). Of homozygotes, 60% were diagnosed with MMD before age 4, and all had infarctions as the first symptom. Infarctions at initial presentation and involvement of posterior cerebral arteries, both known as poor prognostic factors for MMD, were of significantly higher frequency in homozygotes than in heterozygotes and wild types. Variants other than c.14576G>A were not associated with clinical phenotypes. CONCLUSIONS The homozygous c.14576G>A variant in RNF213 could be a good DNA biomarker for predicting the severe type of MMD, for which early medical/surgical intervention is recommended, and may provide a better monitoring and prevention strategy.

Abstract
A 2-year-old male Welsh corgi dog was brought to an animal hospital because of left upper eyelid enlargement with lachrymal gland protrusion. The lachrymal and orbital cavity mass was removed surgically. Microscopically, the orbital mass consisted of a mixture of large rhabdomyoblastic and small round tumour cells. Immunohistochemically, the rhabdomyoblastic cells expressed desmin and myoglobin and the small round cells expressed desmin, myogenin and MyoD1. A diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERS) was made. One month later, multiple masses throughout the body were identified, in particular around the cervical region. One of these lesions was sampled and diagnosed as metastatic ERS. The dog died 84 days after the time of first admission.

Abstract
Fascin-1 expression was examined in 9 cutaneous melanocytomas and 47 oral melanomas. The cases were scored on the basis of extent and intensity of staining, and combined scores were calculated. Fascin-1 expression was observed in 5/9 (56%) melanocytomas and 46/47 (98%) melanomas. The combined score for fascin-1 was significantly greater in stage III/IV melanomas than in stage I/II melanomas (P < 0.05). In addition, strong fascin-1 staining was associated with a significantly shortened survival time (P < 0.05). The results of this study suggest that fascin-1 overexpression correlates with the malignancy of canine melanoma and has the potential to be a new immunohistochemical marker to predict the clinical course of canine melanoma. In addition, targeted therapy for fascin-1 may represent a new strategy for the treatment of canine melanoma.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and phosphate in reclaimed water promote microbial growth in distribution systems and deteriorate water quality. In this study, we tested ferrihydrite (Fh) for its potential to remove both DOM and phosphate in order to control bacterial regrowth. Adsorption kinetics on Fh revealed that phosphate has a higher affinity with Fh than has DOM. The removal efficiency of DOM increased at lower pH. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra of freeze-dried Fh showed that adsorbed DOM was rich in carboxyl/hydroxyl functional groups, indicating anion exchange at Fh surfaces to be a major mechanism, especially at low pH. Fh preferentially removed DOM greater than 1,000 Da. Specific ultraviolet absorption (SUVA) at 254 nm and DOC results suggest Fh adsorption removes more hydrophilic DOM than the coagulation-sand filtration process. Reduction of bacterial regrowth potential (BRP) by Fh was comparable to that of the coagulation-sand filtration process, which indicated that phosphorus was not the rate-limiting factor of microbial growth.

Abstract
A new technique to measure (p,n) charge-exchange reactions in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies on unstable isotopes was successfully developed and used to study the (56)Ni(p,n) reaction at 110 MeV/u. Gamow-Teller transition strengths from (56)Ni leading to (56)Cu were obtained and compared with shell-model predictions in the pf shell using the KB3G and GXPF1A interactions. The calculations with the GXPF1A interaction reproduce the experimental strength distribution much better than the calculations that employed the KB3G interaction, indicating deficiencies in the spin-orbit and proton-neutron residual potentials for the latter. The results are important for improving the description of electron-capture rates on nuclei in the iron region, which are important for modeling the late evolution of core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae.

Abstract
An adult female killer whale (Orcinus orca) was transported to the Port of Nagoya public aquarium in June 2010. While the animal was being maintained in the aquarium there was a gradual decrease in body weight. On October 1st, 2010 the whale exhibited signs of gastrointestinal disease and died on January 14th, 2011. At necropsy examination the gastric compartments were filled with a large number of variably-sized rocks (total weight 81.4 kg) and there was marked ulceration in the third compartment. There were multifocal tubercle-like nodules within the lungs and on sectioning there were numerous abscesses and pulmonary cavities. Microscopically, there was severe suppurative pneumonia associated with fungal hyphae that were infrequently septate and often branched. Numerous bacterial colonies were also present. The hyphae demonstrated immunohistochemical cross-reactivity with Rhizomucor spp. and Cunninghamella bertholletiae was cultured. Bacteriological culture revealed the presence of Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas oryzihabitans. This case represents the first documentation of zygomycosis associated with C. bertholletiae in a marine mammal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS For lung preservation, one of two types of solutions is commonly employed: Euro-Collins (EC) or low potassium dextran glucose (LPDG). These two solutions have been compared regarding biological, morphometrical and physiological outcomes in many experiments. However, the dynamic mechanics of perfused lung are not well understood because the dynamic characteristics cannot be assessed under static conditions; hence, the primary goal of the present study was to assess this in perfused rat lungs during the preservation period, comparing EC with LPDG at 0 or 9 h at 4°C. METHODS Lung impedance was measured using a forced oscillation technique. Lung resistance and elastance values were obtained by the fast Fourier transform algorithm. The instability of central airways and heterogeneity of ventilation were estimated. RESULTS In the EC group, airway resistance and instability were high after perfusion, and the lung elastance was high and more heterogeneous after cold storage. In contrast, those parameters were stable in the LPDG group during cold storage. CONCLUSION Such dynamic stability might facilitate the handling of lung grafts and eliminate injurious cyclic ventilation stress after reperfusion. Thus, we conclude that the impedance frequency characteristic represents a novel informative parameter for investigating lung preservation techniques.

Abstract
We report a ferroelectric transition driven by the off-centering of magnetic Mn(4+) ions in antiferromagnetic Mott insulators Sr(1-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) with a perovskite structure. As x increases, the perovskite lattice shows the typical soft-mode dynamics, as revealed by the momentum-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering and far-infrared spectroscopy, and the ferroelectricity shows up for x ≥ 0.45. The observed polarization is comparable to that for a prototypical ferroelectric BaTiO(3). We further demonstrate that the magnetic order suppresses the ferroelectric lattice dilation by ∼70% and increases the soft-phonon energy by ∼50%, indicating the largest magnetoelectric effects yet attained.

Abstract
(59)Co nuclear spin-lattice relaxation has been measured for the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn(5) in a range of applied fields directed parallel to the c axis. An enhanced normal-state relaxation rate, observed at low temperatures and fields just above H(c2)(0), is taken as a direct measure of the dynamical susceptibility and provides microscopic evidence for an antiferromagnetic instability. The results are well described using the self-consistent renormalized theory for two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, and parameters obtained in the analysis are applied to previously reported specific heat and thermal expansion data with good agreement.

Abstract
We demonstrate a simple and versatile method for the fabrication of a submicron channel for an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) using a single electrospun fibre as a shadow mask. A single electrospun fibre is produced by an alternative switching electrospinning method and is stretched 2.5-fold. The average diameter of the stretched fibres is 302 nm. The stretched fibre is placed on ultrathin dielectric layers of aluminium oxide and a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). During electrode deposition the fibre acts as a very small shadow mask. After removing the fibre, electrodes with very narrow gaps of around 350 nm and with high uniformity are easily obtained. We fabricate an OFET by depositing pentacene as an active layer onto the electrodes. The OFET is operable at low voltages, with a threshold voltage of - 1.1 V and a subthreshold swing of 0.27 V decade(-1), values which are one order of magnitude lower than those obtained with a channel length of 75 µm.

Abstract
Inhomogeneous electronic states resulting from entangled spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated electron materials; such behavior has been observed in many classes of d -electron materials, including the high-T c copper-oxide superconductors, manganites, and most recently the iron–pnictide superconductors. The complexity generated by competing phases in these materials constitutes a considerable theoretical challenge—one that still defies a complete description. Here, we report a manifestation of electronic inhomogeneity in a strongly correlated f -electron system, using CeCoIn5 as an example. A thermodynamic analysis of its superconductivity, combined with nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements, shows that nonmagnetic impurities (Y, La, Yb, Th, Hg, and Sn) locally suppress unconventional superconductivity, generating an inhomogeneous electronic “Swiss cheese” due to disrupted periodicity of the Kondo lattice. Our analysis may be generalized to include related systems, suggesting that electronic inhomogeneity should be considered broadly in Kondo lattice materials.

Abstract
ABSTRACTHydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiO:H) films were prepared by rf glow discharge decomposition of SiH4, CO2 and H2 gas mixture. These films showed better properties than a-SiC:H films. By applying the a-SiO:H to the p-layer, we attained an efficiency of 12.5% for 1cm2 single junction solar cells and a total-area efficiency of 10.1% for 30cm × 40cm tandem submodules.

ABSTRACTStructural and optical properties of nitride based heterostructure and quantum well structure were investigated. Both AIGaN and GaInN ternary alloys are found to grow coherently on the underlying GaN layer. Compressive strain of GaInN is found to cause quantum confined Stark effect, thus affects the luminescence properties of nitride-based quantum wells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although many studies have demonstrated that CIN is associated with in-hospital and long-term mortality, the incidence of CIN following CAS is unclear. We investigated the incidence of CIN, defined as an increase from a baseline creatinine value of at least 0.5 mg/dL or 25% within 72 hours of contrast administration, and we also examined renal function in the late phase after CAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined 80 patients who underwent CAS between April 2005 and December 2009. Clinical background, laboratory data, contrast volume, and clinical course were collected and analyzed. RESULTS The incidence of CIN was 8.8% (7/80), and no patients required hemodialysis. In the group that developed CIN, prolonged CSR after CAS was found in 57.1% (4/7) of cases; this incidence differed significantly (P = .001) from that in the group without development of CIN. Neither preoperative renal function, contrast volume, nor history was related to the incidence of CIN, while on multivariate analysis, prolonged CSR was found to be an independent risk factor for CIN. The incidence of elevation in creatinine values at 6 months after CAS was 8.2% (6/73). All patients who developed delayed renal impairment had pre-existing CKD; this finding differed significantly (P = .04) from that in the group without development of delayed renal impairment. CONCLUSIONS Because patients who develop prolonged CSR after CAS are at increased risk of perioperative major adverse clinical events including CIN, patients at high risk for this condition should be carefully managed to prevent increased morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Histogram-based thresholding techniques utilized for cell-free layer width measurement in arteriolar flow may produce an overestimation of the layer width since they do not consider faint shaded regions near the vessel wall as part of the erythrocyte column. To address this problem, we developed a new method for detecting the boundary of the erythrocyte column based on an edge detection algorithm. This automated method (grayscale method) provides local detections of the inner vessel wall as well as the boundary between the cell-free layer and the erythrocyte column without binarization of grayscale images. The cell-free layer width measurements using the grayscale method and existing techniques (minimum method and Otsu's method) were compared with those determined manually in arteriolar flows of the rat cremaster muscle. In the absence of the shaded regions, values obtained by the grayscale method and minimum method were statistically in good agreement with the manual method but not in the case of Otsu's method. When the faint shaded regions were present, the grayscale method appeared to produce more accurate results than the minimum method and Otsu's method.

Abstract
We reviewed 75 patients (57 men and 18 women), who had undergone tension-band laminoplasty for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (42 patients) or compression myelopathy due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (33 patients) and had been followed for more than ten years. Clinical and functional results were estimated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association score. The rate of recovery and the level of postoperative axial neck pain were also recorded. The pre- and post-operative alignment of the cervical spine (Ishihara curve index indicating lordosis of the cervical spine) and the range of movement (ROM) of the cervical spine were also measured. The mean rate of recovery of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association score at final follow-up was 52.1% (sd 24.6) and significant axial pain was reported by 19 patients (25.3%). Axial pain was reported more frequently in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament than in those with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (p = 0.027). A kyphotic deformity was not seen post-operatively in any patient. The mean ROM decreased post-operatively from 32.8° (sd 12.3) to 16.2° (sd 12.3) (p < 0.001). The mean ROM ratio was 46.9% (sd 28.1) for all the patients. The mean ROM ratio was lower in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament than in those with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (p < 0.001). Compared to those with cervical spondylotic myelopathy, patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament had less ROM and more post-operative axial neck pain.

Abstract
Microcystis aeruginosa forms algal bloom in lakes. They produce toxic compounds such as microcystin. Against such algal problems, the effect of UV treatment was examined. In UV treatment, the effect of photoreactivation should be examined. Photoreactivation is a repair mechanism of genomic DNA damage by sunlight irradiation. UV treatment causes DNA damages on target cyanobacteria, however sunlight can repair some of these DNA damages. To examine the effect of photoreactivation, both white and yellow light incubations were employed. White light allows both photoreactivation and photosynthesis, while yellow light prohibits photoreactivation and only allows photosynthesis. Microcystis aeruginosa NIES 98 strain and PCC 7806 strain were used as the test cultures. Those cultures were exposed to low-pressure (LP) or medium-pressure (MP) ultraviolet (UV) lamp, then incubated under white or yellow light. Yellow light incubation method was effective to examine photoreactivation. It was revealed that almost six times UV fluence was required to inactivate 99% of Microcystis aeruginosa, under photoreactivation condition, compared with non-photoreactivation condition. Inhibition of photoreactivation could greatly enhance UV treatment efficiency against Microcystis aeruginosa. One of the practical suggestions is to conduct UV treatment at night, when photoreactivation by sunlight rarely takes place. Highly efficient inactivation was achieved by avoiding photoreactivation.

Abstract
We report results of ⁵⁹Co nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a single crystal of superconducting PuCoGa₅ in its normal state. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and the Knight shifts as a function of temperature reveal an anisotropy of spin fluctuations with finite wave vector q. By comparison with the isostructural members, we conclude that antiferromagnetic XY-type anisotropy of spin fluctuations plays an important role in mediating superconductivity in these heavy fermion materials.

Abstract
The pathogenicity of equine herpesvirus (EHV)-9, a new neurotropic equine herpesvirus isolated from gazelles, was assessed in pregnant rodents (mice and hamsters) following intranasal inoculation. The pregnant female mice and hamsters were inoculated with EHV-9 in the early or late trimesters. The inoculated animals exhibited mild to severe neurological signs and gave birth to dead or undersized fetuses. All three mice and four hamsters inoculated in the first trimester had varying degrees of placental abnormality, characterized by markedly dilated maternal blood sinusoids, atrophy of the trophoblast cells and necrosis of the middle layer of the trophoblast. There was also endometrial blood vessel congestion and necrosis and disorganization of the fetal capillaries in the mice and hamsters inoculated in the last trimester. EHV-9 antigen was detected in the brain of dams and the lungs of the fetuses and in the middle of the trophoblast layer of the placenta in hamsters inoculated in the first trimester. The placental lesions were milder in mice than in the hamsters. The mice and hamsters inoculated in the last trimester had more prominent lesions than the animals inoculated in the first trimester. These results suggest that EHV-9 can cause the death of the fetus or abortion and that these events may be secondary to placental vascular compromise.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide-rich fluid bubbles, containing approximately 86 percent CO(2), 3 percent H(2)S, and 11 percent residual gas (CH(4) + H(2)), were observed to emerge from the sea floor at 1335- to 1550-m depth in the JADE hydrothermal field, mid-Okinawa Trough. Upon contact with seawater at 3.8 degrees C, gas hydrate immediately formed on the surface of the bubbles and these hydrates coalesced to form pipes standing on the sediments. Chemical composition and carbon, sulfur, and helium isotopic ratios indicate that the CO(2)-rich fluid was derived from the same magmatic source as dissolved gases in 320 degrees C hydrothermal solution emitted from a nearby black smoker chimney. The CO(2)-rich fluid phase may be separated by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal solutions or by leaching of CO(2)-rich fluid inclusion during posteruption interaction between pore water and volcanogenic sediments.

Abstract
The infectivity and pathology of equine herpesvirus 9 (EHV-9), a new neurotropic equine herpesvirus isolated from gazelles, was studied in hamsters experimentally infected via nasal, ocular, oral, intravenous (IV), or peritoneal routes. Clinically, all animals inoculated by the nasal route and ~25% inoculated by the oral and peritoneal routes showed neurological signs on days 3, 6, and 9 postinoculation (PI), respectively. Neurological signs were not observed in animals administered EHV-9 by the IV and ocular routes. With the exception of animals administered EHV-9 by the IV route, all infected animals had lymphocytic meningoencephalitis. Although there were a number of differences in the severity and distribution of the lesions depending on the route of inoculation, the basic features of lymphocytic meningoencephalitis caused by EHV-9 were common. Lesions consisted of neuronal necrosis, perivascular aggregates of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and neutrophils, gliosis, intranuclear inclusion bodies, and diffuse lymphocytic infiltrates in the meninges. Viral antigen was detected in degenerated neurons in infected animals inoculated by the nasal, ocular, oral, and peritoneal routes. The distribution of EHV-9 antigen was somewhat dependent on inoculation route. There were no microscopic abnormalities or viral antigen in animals treated by the IV route. This study provides new data about experimental EHV-9 infection in hamsters through routes other than the IV route. These results suggest that in the animals infected by the oral, ocular, and peritoneal routes, EHV-9 might travel to the brain through nerves, other than by the olfactory route, after initial propagation at the site of viral entry.
