Abstract
BACKGROUND Acinetobacter baumannii is emerging as an important hospital pathogen, which can persist in the environment for extended periods of time. It is known to produce biofilms, a community of bacteria enclosed within a protective polymeric matrix. AIM To establish whether the effect of biofilm formation by Acinetobacter baumannii may be associated with persistence in the hospital environment. METHODS The effect of biofilm formation on the survival of A. baumannii on dry surfaces was investigated in biofilm-forming compared to non-biofilm-forming strains. Survival assays were determined by viable counts of the cells inoculated on to glass cover slips and stored under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity. FINDINGS The survival times for the biofilm-forming strains were longer than for the non-biofilm-forming ones (36 vs 15 days, respectively, P<0.001). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies showed a polysaccharide layer and appendages in the biofilm-forming strains, not in the non-biofilm forming ones. CONCLUSION Biofilm formation increases the survival rate of A. baumannii on dry surfaces and may contribute to its persistence in the hospital environment, increasing the probability of causing nosocomial infections and outbreaks.

Abstract
At present, colistin is among the few antibiotics effective against Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. However, in the last few years, colistin-resistant A. baumannii strains have been isolated. Therefore, antibiotics effective against these usually pan-resistant colistin-resistant A. baumannii strains are required. The main objective of this study was to analyse the activity of 15 peptides against colistin-susceptible and colistin-resistant A. baumannii. The MICs were determined by microdilution. Among these 15 antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), melittin, indolicidin and mastoparan showed good activity against both colistin-susceptible and colistin-resistant A. baumannii. Further studies of mastoparan with time-killing curves showed bactericidal activity at MIC ×8 for both colistin-susceptible and colistin-resistant A. baumannii. In conclusion, mastoparan may be a potential alternative for the treatment of colistin-resistant A. baumannii infections.

Abstract
In this study, two Membrane Biological Reactors (MBR) with submerged flat membranes, one at lab-scale conditions and the other at pilot-plant conditions, were operated at environmental temperature to treat an industrial wastewater characterised by low phenol concentrations (8-16 mg L(-1)) and high salinity (∼ 150-160 mS cm(-1)). During the operation of both reactors, the phenol loading rate was progressively increased and less than 1mg phenol L(-1) was detected even at very low HRTs (0.5-0.7 days). Membrane fouling was minimized by the cross flow aeration rate inside the MBRs and by intermittent permeation. Microbial community analysis of both reactors revealed that members of the genera Halomonas and Marinobacter (gammaproteobacteria) were major components. Growth-linked phenol degradation by pure cultures of Marinobacter isolates demonstrated that this bacterium played a major role in the removal of phenol from the bioreactors.

Abstract
The main goal of this study was to use an oleophilic biostimulant (S-200) to target possible nutritional limitations for biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the interface between nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs) and the water phase. Biodegradation of PAHs present in fuel-containing NAPLs was slow and followed zero-order kinetics, indicating bioavailability restrictions. The biostimulant enhanced the biodegradation, producing logistic (S-shaped) kinetics and 10-fold increases in the rate of mineralization of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene. Chemical analysis of residual fuel oil also evidenced an enhanced biodegradation of the alkyl-PAHs and n-alkanes. The enhancement was not the result of an increase in the rate of partitioning of PAHs into the aqueous phase, nor was it caused by the compensation of any nutritional deficiency in the medium. We suggest that biodegradation of PAH by bacteria attached to NAPLs can be limited by nutrient availability due to the simultaneous consumption of NAPL components, but this limitation can be overcome by interface fertilization.

Abstract
This paper reports an experiment intended to demonstrate that the vertical jumping response can be learned using a signaled-avoidance technique. A photoelectric cell system was used to record the response. Twenty female rats, divided equally into two groups, were exposed to intertrial intervals of either 15 or 40 s. Subjects had to achieve three successive criteria of acquisition: 3, 5, and 10 consecutive avoidance responses. Results showed that both groups learned the avoidance response, requiring increasingly larger numbers of trials as the acquisition criteria increased. No significant effect of intertrial interval was observed.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In a cohort of 5,201 women [72.3 +/- 5.3 years] from 58 primary care centers in Spain, followed for three years, no relationship between heel QUS parameters and overall mortality was found. However, a significant relationship between a low speed of sound (SOS) and vascular mortality was observed. INTRODUCTION An inverse relationship between mortality and bone mineral density measured by dual-energy absorption densitometry or quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS) has been described. The aim of the present study was to test this relationship in the ECOSAP cohort, a 3-year prospective study designed to assess the ability of heel QUS and clinical risk factors to predict non-vertebral fracture risk in women over 64. METHODS A cohort of 5,201 women [72.3 +/- 5.3 years] was studied. QUS was assessed with the Sahara(R) bone sonometer. Women attended follow-up visits every 6 months. Physicians recorded if the patient died and cause of death. Hazard rates (HR) of all-cause and vascular mortality per one standard deviation reduction in QUS parameters were determined. RESULTS One hundred (1.9%) women died during a median of 36.1 months follow-up, for a total of 14,999 patient-years, 42 because of vascular events (both cardiovascular and cerebrovascular). After adjusting for age, none of the QUS variables showed statistically significant differences between the patients who died and the survivors. In the final multivariate model, adjusted for age, current thyroxine and hypoglycaemic drug use, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and decreased visual acuity, SOS was marginally non-significant: (HR: 1.19; 0.97-1.45). However, each 1 SD reduction in SOS was associated with a 39% increase in vascular mortality (HR: 1.39; 1.15-1.66). CONCLUSIONS In our cohort, SOS was related with vascular mortality, but not overall mortality.

Abstract
Biofilm formation in 92 unrelated strains of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated in a multicentre cohort study was investigated using a microtitre plate assay. Fifty-six (63%) isolates formed biofilm. These isolates were less frequently resistant to imipenem or ciprofloxacin than were non-biofilm-forming isolates (25% vs. 47%, p 0.04; and 66% vs. 94%, p 0.004, respectively). All catheter-related urinary or bloodstream infections and the sole case of shunt-related meningitis were caused by biofilm-forming strains. Multivariate analysis revealed that treatment in an intensive care unit, ciprofloxacin resistance and isolation from a respiratory sample were associated with non-biofilm-forming isolates, while previous aminoglycoside use was associated with biofilm-forming isolates.
