Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Both colorectal neoplasm and coronary artery disease are prevalent diseases worldwide and share several risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between coronary artery calcification and prevalence of colorectal adenoma. METHODOLOGY We retrospectively evaluated 3,092 subjects who underwent colonoscopy and coronary artery calcium computed tomography (CT) on the same day or within a 3-month interval, during routine check-ups between January 2006 and June 2009 at the Center for Health Promotion of the Samsung Medical Center. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS Colorectal adenomas were detected in 1,067 (34.5%) of the 3,092 subjects, including 536 (41.0%) individuals with and 531 (29.7%) without coronary calcification (p<0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of coronary artery calcification (OR=1.346; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.122-1.614), age ≥50 years (OR=1.516; 95% CI=1.256-1.829), waist circumference of 90-99cm (OR=1.364; 95% CI=1.008-1.844) and current smoker (OR=1.266; 95% CI=1.045-1.534) were associated with the prevalence of colorectal adenoma. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of colorectal adenoma is significantly higher in patients with coronary artery calcification. Our results support positive relationship between coronary artery disease and colorectal adenoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Capsule endoscopy may play a role in the evaluation of patients presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in the emergency department. PATIENTS AND METHODS We evaluated adults with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage presenting to the emergency departments of two academic centers. Patients ingested a wireless video capsule, which was followed immediately by a nasogastric tube aspiration and later by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). We compared capsule endoscopy with nasogastric tube aspiration for determination of the presence of blood, and with EGD for discrimination of the source of bleeding, identification of peptic/inflammatory lesions, safety, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS The study enrolled 49 patients (32 men, 17 women; mean age 58.3 ± 19 years), but three patients did not complete the capsule endoscopy and five were intolerant of the nasogastric tube. Blood was detected in the upper gastrointestinal tract significantly more often by capsule endoscopy (15 /18 [83.3 %]) than by nasogastric tube aspiration (6 /18 [33.3 %]; P = 0.035). There was no significant difference in the identification of peptic/inflammatory lesions between capsule endoscopy (27 /40 [67.5 %]) and EGD (35 /40 [87.5 %]; P = 0.10, OR 0.39 95 %CI 0.11 - 1.15). Capsule endoscopy reached the duodenum in 45 /46 patients (98 %). One patient (2.2 %) had self-limited shortness of breath and one (2.2 %) had coughing on capsule ingestion. CONCLUSIONS In an emergency department setting, capsule endoscopy appears feasible and safe in people presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Capsule endoscopy identifies gross blood in the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the duodenum, significantly more often than nasogastric tube aspiration and identifies inflammatory lesions, as well as EGD. Capsule endoscopy may facilitate patient triage and earlier endoscopy, but should not be considered a substitute for EGD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Campylobacter jejuni infection is a leading cause of gastroenteritis and post infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS). Unanswered questions include the role of cytokines, effects on gut flora, and why IBS is not more prevalent in countries with higher gastroenteritis rates. Therefore, we determined the effects of early and repeat C. jejuni infections on post infectious phenotypes, gut flora, and cytokine levels in a rat model of functional bowel and microbial changes. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats were gavaged with 10(8) cfu C. jejuni as juveniles and again as adults (J+/A+), as adults only (J-/A+), or vehicle (controls). Stool consistency during acute colonization, post infectious stool wet weight, total bacteria and Methanobrevibacter smithii levels in bowel segments, and ileal cytokines were evaluated. KEY RESULTS C. jejuni colonization was longer for first exposures as juveniles (43.4 ± 1.7 days) vs. adults (30.4 ± 3.5 days) (P < 0.01) and shortest for second exposures (10.5 ± 1.7 days, P < 0.05). Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) was more prevalent in J+/A+ (47%) than J-/A+ rats (26%) (P = 0.019), but J-/A+ rats had greater stool consistency alterations (P < 0.01). Ileal β-defensin 2, TLR-4, IL-8, and β-defensin 6 levels were increased in J-/A+ rats and further increased in J+/A+ rats; TNF-α was highest and IL6 lowest in J-/A+ rats. Total bacteria increased, and M. smithii decreased, with successive infections. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES We conclude that C. jejuni infection results in long-term alterations in small bowel flora, including methanogens. Mucosal defense mediators appear related to the number of infections, but not to SIBO development or the development of functional bowel phenotypes.

Abstract
Cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide of the innate immune system, has been shown to modulate microbial growth, wound healing and inflammation. However, whether cathelicidin controls Helicobacter pylori infection in vivo remains unexplored. This study sought to elucidate the role of endogenous and exogenous mouse cathelicidin (CRAMP) in the protection against H. pylori infection and the associated gastritis in mice. Results showed that genetic ablation of CRAMP in mice significantly increased the susceptibility of H. pylori colonization and the associated gastritis as compared with the wild-type control. Furthermore, replenishment with exogenous CRAMP, delivered via a bioengineered CRAMP-secreting strain of Lactococcus lactis, reduced H. pylori density in the stomach as well as the associated inflammatory cell infiltration and cytokine production. Collectively, these findings indicate that cathelicidin protects against H. pylori infection and its associated gastritis in vivo. Our study also demonstrates the feasibility of using the transformed food-grade bacteria to deliver cathelicidin, which may have potential clinical applications in the treatment of H. pylori infection in humans.

Abstract
Using microRNA (miRNA) expression array, we identified that miR-7 was deregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC). We studied the biological role and molecular target of miR-7 in CRC. miR-7 was downregulated in six out of seven colon cancer cell lines. Ectopic expression of miR-7 suppressed colon cancer cell proliferation (P<0.05), induced apoptosis (P<0.05) and caused cell-cycle arrest in G1 phase (P<0.05). The tumor suppressive function of miR-7 was further confirmed in nude mice (P<0.05). The 3'-untranslated region (3'UTR) of Yin Yang 1 (YY1) mRNA contains an evolutionarily conserved miR-7 binding site using in silico searches, luciferase reporter assay and western blot analysis confirmed that miR-7 directly bound to YY1 3'UTR to negatively regulate the protein expression of YY1 in colon cancer cell lines HCT116 and LOVO. Intriguingly, knock-down of YY1 in three colon cancer cell lines (HCT116, LOVO and DLD1) consistently suppressed cell proliferation (P<0.01) and induced apoptosis (P<0.01), indicating the opposite functions of miR-7 and YY1 in CRC. Consistent with these data, ectopic expression of YY1 promoted cell growth by increasing proliferation (P<0.01) and suppressing apoptosis (P<0.001). The tumorigenic ability of YY1 was further confirmed in vivo in xenograft-nude mouse model (P<0.01). In addition, pathway analyses revealed that the oncogenic effect by YY1 was associated with inhibiting p53 and modulating its downstream effectors p15, caspase cascades and C-Jun, and activating Wnt signaling pathway through activating β-catenin, anti-apoptotic survivin and fibroblast growth factor 4. Furthermore, multivariate analysis revealed that patients with YY1 protein high expression had a significant decrease in overall survival, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that these patients had significantly shorter survival than others (P<0.0001). In conclusion, MiR-7 is a novel miRNA with tumor suppressive function in colon cancer by targeting oncogenic YY1. YY1 promotes colon cancer growth through inhibiting p53 and promoting Wnt signaling pathways and serves as an independent prognostic biomarker for CRC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between dyspepsia and psychiatric comorbidity such as anxiety and depression is poorly defined. Previous studies have been limited by lack of standardised diagnostic criteria. AIM To examine the prevalence and comorbidity of dyspepsia as defined by Rome III (6-month duration) with DSM-IV-TR generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive episodes (MDE) in the general population. METHODS A random population-based telephone survey was done using a questionnaire on symptoms of Rome III Dyspepsia, DSM-IV-TR GAD and MDE and their chronological relationship. RESULTS Of the 2011 respondents 8.0% currently had Rome III Dyspepsia, 3.8% reported GAD and 12.4% reported MDE respectively. Dyspeptic subjects had a twofold increased risk of GAD (OR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.06-3.89, P < 0.001) and a threefold increased risk of MDE (OR = 3.56, 95% CI: 2.33-5.43, P < 0.001). MDE and GAD most often coincided with dyspepsia in onset. Dyspepsia (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.65-3.72 P < 0.001), MDE (OR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.64-3.46, P < 0.001) and female sex (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.21-2.23, P < 0.001) independently predicted frequent medical consultations. GAD independently predicted high investigation expenditure (OR = 4.65, 95% CI: 1.15-18.70, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS With stringently adopted Rome III and DSM-IV-TR criteria, dyspepsia was strongly associated and often coincident in onset with generalised anxiety disorder and major depressive episodes in the community. Excessive healthcare utilisation should alert clinicians to risk of psychiatric comorbidity.

Abstract
Using genome-wide promoter methylation analysis, we identified a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif 9 (ADAMTS9) is methylated in cancer. We aim to clarify its epigenetic inactivation, biological function and clinical implication in gastric cancer. ADAMTS9 was silenced in 6 out of 8 gastric cancer cell lines. The loss of ADAMTS9 expression was regulated by promoter hypermethylation and could be restored by demethylation agent. Ectopic expression of ADAMTS9 in gastric cancer cell lines (AGS, BGC823) inhibited cell growth curve in both the cell lines (P<0.0001), suppressed colony formation (P<0.01) and induced apoptosis (P<0.001 in AGS, P<0.01 in BGC823). Moreover, conditioned culture medium from ADAMTS9-transfected cell lines significantly disrupted the human umbilical vein endothelial cell tube formation capacity on Matrigel (P<0.01 in AGS, P<0.001 in BGC823). The in vivo growth of ADAMTS9 cells in nude mice was also markedly diminished after stable expression of ADAMTS9 (P<0.001). On the other hand, ADAMTS9 knockdown promoted cell proliferation (P<0.001). We further revealed that ADAMTS9 inhibited tumor growth by blocking activation of Akt and its downstream target the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). ADAMTS9 also reduced phosphorylation of mTOR downstream targets p70 ribosomal S6 kinase, eIF4E-binding protein and downregulated hypoxia-inducible factor-1α. Therefore, this is the first demonstration that ADAMTS9 is a critical tumor suppressor of gastric cancer progression at least in part through suppression of oncogenic AKT/mTOR signaling. Moreover, promoter methylation of ADAMTS9 was detected in 29.2% (21/72) of primary gastric tumors. Multivariate analysis showed that patients with ADAMTS9 methylation had a poorer overall survival (relative risk (RR)=2.788; 95% confidence interval, 1.474-5.274; P=0.002). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that ADAMTS9 methylation was significantly associated with shortened survival in gastric cancer patients (P=0.001, log-rank test). In conclusion, ADAMTS9 acts as a functional tumor suppressor in gastric cancer through inhibiting oncogenic AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Methylation of ADAMTS9 is an independent prognostic factor of gastric cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM Treatment of ulcerative colitis should be tailored to the severity of colonic inflammation, which in the past has been gauged mainly by clinical features and biochemical parameters. Recently, mucosal healing has been proposed as a standard to guide therapy. The aim of this multicenter study was to test whether mucosal appearance, as reported by colon capsule endoscopy (CCE), can be used to differentiate active from inactive ulcerative colitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Adult patients from Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan who were suspected or known to have ulcerative colitis were included in this prospective study. CCE and conventional optical colonoscopy were offered to these patients on the same day after receiving standard bowel preparation. The primary endpoint was the accuracy of CCE in assessing colonic inflammation (defined as the presence of ulcers, erythema, erosions, edema, exudates in mucosa), using optical colonoscopy as the gold standard. RESULTS At total of 100 patients (42 females; median age 50 years; range 22 - 68 years) were enrolled. Four cases were excluded from the analysis due to technical failure or slow transit of the capsule. In nine patients, the capsule was not excreted within 8.5 hours and required retrieval during colonoscopy. The sensitivity of CCE to detect active colonic inflammation was 89 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 80 - 95) and specificity was 75 % (95 %CI 51 - 90). The positive and negative predictive values of CCE for colonic inflammation were 93 % (95 %CI 84 - 97) and 65 % (95 %CI 43 - 83), respectively. No serious adverse event related to the CCE procedure or preparation was reported. CONCLUSION CCE is a safe procedure to monitor mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis. However, at this stage, CCE cannot be recommended to replace conventional colonoscopy in the management of this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS We examined heritability and bivariate analyses for the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and adiposity measures among Koreans. METHODS AND RESULTS We analysed the data from 2496 participants (962 men, 1534 women, age 30-74 years), including 1320 non-twin family members, 468 monozygotic (MZ) and 120 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, collected from the Healthy Twin study of Korea. Adiposity measurements comprised BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio (WHTR). Analyses were conducted using the Sequential Oligogenic Linkage Analysis Routines (SOLAR) package software. The co-twin control analyses shows that estimates of within-pair regression coefficients in the relationship between adiposity traits and FRS were attenuated for MZ twin pairs, relative to DZ twin pairs (0.11-0.26 vs. 0.60-0.71). The heritability estimate for FRS was 0.37, and the estimates for adiposity traits ranged from 0.45 to 0.63 (P < 0.001). Bivariate analysis revealed genetic correlations between FRS, and all of the adiposity traits ranged from 0.16 (for WHTR, P > 0.05) to 0.46 (for WC, P < 0.001). The common environmental correlations between FRS and each of the adiposity traits ranged from 0.43 to 0.66 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS FRS and each of the obesity traits shared common genetic and environmental relationships. These findings support a pleiotropic action between genes associated with adiposity traits and FRS and a need of further investigations for identifying specific common environmental factors.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Bone mineral density (BMD), a representative marker of osteoporosis risk, is found to be highly heritable in this Korean study, which is very consistent with the findings in Western populations. This finding strongly supports that genetic factors are significant determinants of osteoporosis risk along with individual biological and behavioral factors. INTRODUCTION Although genetic factors are known to contribute significantly to variations in BMD in Western populations, such an association has not been fully evaluated in an Asian population. This study was conducted to determine the role of genetic factors on BMD in Korean population. METHODS The study participants were 2,728 men and women consisting of 497 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs, 119 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, and 1,496 first-degree relatives from the Healthy Twin Study. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Quantitative genetic analysis based on a variance decomposition model was performed. RESULTS Age and the measured covariates accounted for 17~61% of the variation in BMD, depending on the sites of measurement. After accounting for the covariate effects, the heritability of BMD at the whole body, thoracic and lumbar spine, whole ribs, whole pelvis, whole arms, and whole legs were 0.76, 0.72, 0.73, 0.71, 0.51, and 0.75, respectively. The pair-wise correlation of BMD was the highest within MZ twin pairs, followed by DZ twin pairs, sibling pairs, and parents-child pairs. Cross-trait correlation analysis revealed a positive genetic correlation between BMDs at different sites, ranging from 0.80 (arm and leg BMD) to 0.50 (pelvis and arm BMD). CONCLUSIONS The high heritability of BMD in this Korean population similar to those found in Western populations and the significant common genetic basis between BMDs at different sites strongly supports a significant role of genetic determinants on the risk of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) was used to study the structure of the protonated α-Al(2)O(3) (11 ̅20), and water/α-Al(2)O(3) (11 ̅20) interfaces as a function of pH. By combining SFVS spectra with an oxygen-terminated model suggested by x-ray reflectivity, we are able to understand several details of the protonated α-Al(2)O(3) (11 ̅20) interface structure. For example, the spectral changes observed for the water/α-Al(2)O(3) (11 ̅20) interface with varying pH could be accounted for by the protonation/deprotonation of particular surface hydroxyls. Our spectra also indicate that the point of zero charge for this interface is at pH ~ 6.7.

Abstract
Cathelicidin is a pleiotropic host defense peptide secreted by epithelial and immune cells. Whether endogenous cathelicidin is protective against ulcerative colitis, however, is unclear. Here we sought to delineate the role of endogenous murine cathelicidin (mCRAMP) and the therapeutic efficacy of intrarectal administration of mCRAMP-encoding plasmid in ulcerative colitis using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-challenged cathelicidin-knockout (Cnlp(-/-)) mice as a model. Cnlp(-/-) mice had more severe symptoms and mucosal disruption than the wild-type mice in response to DSS challenge. The tissue levels of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, myeloperoxidase activity and the number of apoptotic cells were increased in the colon of DSS-challenged Cnlp(-/-) mice. Moreover, mucus secretion and mucin gene expression were impaired in Cnlp(-/-) mice. All these abnormalities were reversed by the intrarectal administration of mCRAMP or mCRAMP-encoding plasmid. Taken together, endogenous cathelicidin may protect against ulcerative colitis through modulation of inflammation and mucus secretion.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: On breast MRI, background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) and volume of fibroglandular tissue (FGT) have been shown to reflect a patient's hormonal status. Tamoxifen has been shown to reduce mammographic breast density and may serve as an early predictor of response in the prevention setting (Cuzick, JNCI 2011). We have shown that adjuvant tamoxifen can reduce BPE in the unaffected breast in women with breast cancer. We hypothesize that aromatase inhibitor (AI) induced endocrine changes in breast tissue should also be evident and therefore we performed a study to evaluate whether adjuvant AI therapy influences BPE or amount of FGT in the contralateral breast.
Methods: An electronic medical record review identified 856 postmenopausal women with stage I-III breast cancer who had at least two breast MRIs and took adjuvant AI treatment. A retrospective chart review was conducted to select those patients without a history of prior tamoxifen or raloxifene treatment who had a MRI of the contralateral breast both before and during 6 to 12 months of AI treatment. After exclusion of all irradiated breasts, 168 women were eligible. MRIs were performed between August 1999 and June 2010. Two radiologists who were blind to AI treatment status, independently rated level of BPE and amount of FGT using categorical scales: BPE — Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Marked; FGT — Fatty, Scattered, Heterogeneously Dense, Dense (based on proposed BIRADS criteria for BPE and on ACR criteria for FGT). Blinded side-by-side direct comparison evaluated whether there was a category change between the two MRIs. A consensus was reached in cases of disagreement. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to assess changes in rating categories for BPE and FGT between before and during AI breast MRIs. A waiver of authorization was granted by the institutional review board for this study.
Results: In this study 127/168 (76%) women were treated with anastrozole, 33/168 (20%) with letrozole and 8/168 (5%) with exemestane. Based on the blinded side-by-side comparison, a category (or more) decrease in BPE occurred during treatment with AIs (p<0.0001). There was an overall shift from higher to lower degree of BPE in 35% (45/127) of the women taking anastrozole while a category increase occurred in only one woman (1%; p <0.0001). A similar result was seen in the women taking letrozole [45% (15/33) had a decrease versus 3% (1/33) an increase; p=0.0003] and exemestane [25% (2/8) had a decrease versus 12.5% (1/8) an increase; p=0.50]. For FGT a category decrease occurred in 5% (6/127) of anastrozole users while no increase occurred [0% (0/127), p=0.016]. The respective numbers for letrozole were 3% (1/33) and 0% (0/33), and nobody on exemestane had a change in FGT.
Conclusions: After 6 to 12 months of treatment with adjuvant AIs, there was a statistically significant category (or more) decrease in BPE. BPE is more sensitive than FGT to changes in normal breast stroma that occur during adjuvant treatment with AIs and BPE may be a marker of anti-hormonal activity in the breasts.

Abstract
Using genome-wide methylation screening, we identified that paired box gene 5 (PAX5) is involved in human cancer development. However, the function of PAX5 in gastric cancer (GC) development is largely unclear. We analyzed its epigenetic inactivation, biological functions and clinical application in GC. PAX5 was silenced in seven out of eight GC cell lines. A significant downregulation was also detected in paired gastric tumors compared with adjacent non-cancerous tissues. The downregulation of PAX5 was closely linked to the promoter hypermethylation status and could be restored with demethylation treatment. Ectopic expression of PAX5 in silenced GC cell lines (AGS and BGC823) inhibited colony formation and cell viability, arrested cell cycle, induced apoptosis, suppressed cell migration and invasion and repressed tumorigenicity in nude mice. Consistent with the induction of apoptosis by PAX5 in vitro, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining showed significantly enhanced apoptotic cells in PAX5-expressed tumors compared with the vector control tumors. On the other hand, knockdown of PAX5 by PAX5-short hairpin RNA increased the cell viability and proliferation. The anti-tumorigenic function of PAX5 was revealed to be mediated by upregulating downstream targets of tumor protein 53 (p53), p21, BCL2-associated X protein, metastasis suppressor 1 and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase 1, and downregulating BCL2, cyclin D1, mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET) and matrix metalloproteinase 1. Immunoprecipitation assay demonstrated that PAX5 directly bound to the promoters of p53 and MET. Moreover, PAX5 hypermethylation was detected in 77% (144 of 187) of primary GCs compared with 10.5% (2/19) of normal gastric tissues (P<0.0001). GC patients with PAX5 methylation had a significant poor survival compared with the unmethylated cases as demonstrated by Cox regression model and log-rank test. In conclusion, PAX5 is a novel functional tumor suppressor in gastric carcinogenesis. Detection of methylated PAX5 can be utilized as an independent prognostic factor in GC.

Abstract
UNLABELLED As there is currently a lack of consensus on the most appropriate dose and duration of peginterferon alfa-2a (PEG-IFNα-2a) therapy in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients, the efficacy and safety of either 24 or 48 weeks' duration and 90 μg/week or 180 μg/week doses were compared. HBeAg-positive patients (n = 544; 34% genotype B, 51% genotype C) were randomized to receive PEG-IFNα-2a (2 × 2 factorial design) for 24 or 48 weeks and at 90 μg/week or 180 μg/week and included in the per-protocol population. The primary efficacy endpoint of the noninferiority study was HBeAg seroconversion 6 months posttreatment. The prespecified odds ratio (OR) noninferiority margin was 1.88 with a one-sided significance level of 0.025. The highest rates of HBeAg seroconversion 6 months posttreatment were in the 180/48 arm (36.2% versus 14.1%-25.8% in the other arms). When the dose and duration arms were pooled, the OR for noninferiority of 24 weeks versus 48 weeks was 2.17 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.43, 3.31; P = 0.749) and for 90 μg versus 180 μg was 1.79 (95% CI 1.18, 2.72; P = 0.410). As the upper limit of the 95% CI of the ORs were >1.88, 24 weeks were inferior to 48 weeks and 90 μg/week was inferior to 180 μg/week. The highest rates of response in the 180/48 arm were achieved by patients with HBsAg <1,500 IU/mL at Week 12 (58%) or Week 24 (57%), whereas patients with HBsAg >20,000 IU/mL did not respond. Adverse events were typical of those associated with PEG-IFNα-2a. CONCLUSION Compared with lower doses and shorter durations, the licensed PEG-IFNα-2a treatment regimen (180 μg/48 weeks) was the most efficacious and beneficial for HBeAg-positive patients predominantly infected with hepatitis B virus genotypes B or C.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Increased adiposity, shorter stature, shorter leg length and carotid intima-media thickening are associated with cardiovascular (CV) disease. This study aimed to evaluate the sex-specific phenotypic and genetic associations between adiposity and anthropometric measures and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). SUBJECTS/METHODS We measured IMT at common carotid artery (CCA-IMT), carotid bifurcation and internal carotid artery (ICA-IMT) using B-mode ultrasound, and adiposity and anthropometric measures, including body mass index (BMI), height, leg length, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio and percentage of body fat; we also assessed conventional CV risk factors among 706 Korean adults from the Healthy Twin Study. The associations were analyzed using quantitative genetic and linear mixed analyses. RESULTS In linear mixed analyses, BMI and WC had independent associations with the IMT at CCA-IMT and ICA-IMT and CCA-IMT, respectively, after adjusting for age and conventional CV risk factors in men. By comparison, in women, adiposity and anthropometric measures were associated with carotid IMT only before adjusting for the covariates. In men, there were significant genetic correlations between BMI and CCA-IMT (ρ(G)=0.32±0.11), BMI and ICA-IMT (ρ(G)=0.35±0.11) and WC and ICA-IMT (ρ(G)=0.32±0.13) after adjusting for covariates, whereas in women the cross-trait genetic correlations were no longer significant after adjusting for the covariates. CONCLUSIONS In this Korean twins and families, we found sex-specific associations between adiposity and anthropometric measures and the IMT at each segment of the carotid artery, and BMI and WC in men can be indicators predicting carotid intima-media thickening regardless of age and CV risk factors.
