Abstract
A total of 836 unfed Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from 2 forested areas of the Lublin region in eastern Poland. Of these, 540 ticks were collected in area 'A', exposed to flooding from the Vistula river, while the remaining 296 ticks were collected in suburban area 'B', not exposed to flooding. Ticks were examined by nested-PCR for the presence of DNA of Leptospira spp. and of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, including its genospecies. The presence of the Leptospira spp. DNA was found in the examined specimens of Ixodes ricinus. The infection rate was much greater in area 'A' exposed to flooding, compared to unexposed area 'B' (15.6% vs. 1.4%, p<0.0001). A significant difference was noted in the case of all developmental stages. For the total results, the prevalence of Leptospira spp. in nymphs (16.9%) was two-fold greater (p<0.01) than in females and males (7.9% and 7.1%, respectively). The total prevalence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in examined ticks amounted to 24.3%. Altogether, the genospecies Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto was detected most often. No correlation was found to exist between the presence of Leptospira spp. and B. burgdorferi sensu lato in the examined ticks, which indicates that the detection of Leptospira in ticks was not due to a false-positive cross-reaction with DNA of B. burgdorferi. In conclusion, this study shows for the first time the presence of Leptospira spp. in Ixodes ticks and marked frequency of the occurrence of these bacteria in ticks. This finding has significant epidemiological implications by indicating the possibility of the transmission of leptospirosis by Ixodes ricinus, the commonest tick species in Europe and most important vector of numerous pathogens.

Abstract
The article describes the impact of weight training, micro-elements and vitamins on rehabilitation in post-myocardial infarction patients. Cardiac rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary and multi-faceted intervention aimed at restoring well-being and retarding disease progression in patients with heart disease. It has been shown that exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is effective in reducing total and cardiovascular mortality. Intake of vitamins and other diet supplements was reported to exert beneficial effects. Pharmacological medication is associated with an increased risk of severe arrhythmia, and many adverse outcomes. Therefore, since conventional medicine only relieves the symptoms, cellular nutrition should be used in order to improve the quality of life in post-myocardial infarction patients. These elements prevent another infarction. The following nutrients are reported to have beneficial effects on general and cardiovascular health: amino acids, vitamins, coenzyme Q10, pycnogenol, inositol, omega-3 fatty acids, macromineral elements, and trace mineral elements. In conclusion, the review indicates that appropriate weight training and diet supplementation ensure full recovery and elimination of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
A total of 320 potable water samples were collected from various rural and urban sources located in the Lublin region of eastern Poland. They comprised: 55 samples of treated (chlorinated) tap water from rural dwellings distributed by the municipal water supply system (MWSS), 111 samples of treated tap water from urban dwellings distributed by the MWSS, 45 samples of untreated well water from household wells and 109 samples from private water supply systems (PWSS) distributing untreated well water. Water samples were examined for the presence and species composition of Legionella, Yersinia, Gram-negative bacteria belonging to family Enterobacteriaceae (GNB-E) and Gram-negative bacteria not belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae (GNB-NE), by filtering through cellulose filters and culture on respectively GVPC, CIN, EMB and tryptic soya agar media. The occurrence of Legionella in the samples taken from the outlets of the urban MWSS was high (77.5%), and significantly greater compared to frequencies noted in rural MWSS (7.3%), and samples of well water from household wells (28.9%) and PWSS (13.8%) (p<0.001). Strains L. pneumophila serogroups 2-14, L. pneumophila serogroup 1 and Legionella spp. (species other than L. pneumophila) formed respectively 64.3%, 17.5%, and 18.2% of total isolates from urban MWSS, 100%, 0, and 0 of those from rural MWSS, 69.2%, 7.7%, and 23.1% of those from household wells, and 66.7%, 0, and 33.3% of those from PWSS. The concentration of Legionella strains in the positive samples from urban MWSS exceeded the threshold limit value of 100 cfu/100 ml in 86.1%, while in the other sources this value was not exceeded. No Yersinia strains were isolated from the examined water samples. Altogether 8 species or genera of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to Enterobacteriaceae family (GNB-E) and 10 species or genera of Gram-negative bacteria not belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family (GNB-NE) were found in the examined samples. In the MWSS samples, an inverse relationship was found between Legionella and GNB-E and the numbers of Enterobacter spp. and Serratia spp. strains were significantly more common in the samples without Legionella. By contrast, in the PWSS samples, the numbers of Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. and Salmonella spp. were distinctly and significantly greater (p<0.01-p<0.001) in the samples containing Legionella. Among GNB-NE, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains occurred significantly more frequently in samples containing Legionella (for MWSS and well water separately p<0.05, for total samples p<0.001). Similarly, strains of Flavobacterium breve and Xanthomonas spp. occurred significantly more often in the samples with Legionella, while the numbers of Aeromonas spp. and Vibrio spp. strains were significantly greater in the samples not containing Legionella. In conclusion, a health risk could be associated with exposure to the water from urban MWSS because of the high prevalence and concentration of Legionella, and with exposure to well water from PWSS because of the correlation of occurrence of Legionella and potentially pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae strains, and the possibility of synergistic eff ects. The adverse eff ects could be also due to the significant correlation of Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa that occured in water from various sources.

Abstract
There are two main groups of biological agents regarded as occupational hazards: allergenic and/or toxic agents forming bioaerosols, and agents causing zoonoses and other infectious diseases. Bioaerosols occurring in the agricultural work environments comprise: bacteria, fungi, high molecular polymers produced by bacteria (endotoxin) or by fungi (β-glucans), low molecular secondary metabolites of fungi (mycotoxins, volatile organic compounds) and various particles of plant and animal origin. All these agents could be a cause of allergic and/or immunotoxic occupational diseases of respiratory organ (airways inflammation, rhinitis, toxic pneumonitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and asthma), conjunctivitis and dermatitis in exposed workers. Very important among zoonotic agents causing occupational diseases are those causing tick-borne diseases: Lyme borreliosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis. Agricultural workers in tropical zones are exposed to mosquito bites causing malaria, the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the world. The group of agents causing other, basically not vector-borne zoonoses, comprises those evoking emerging or re-emerging diseases of global concern, such as: hantaviral diseases, avian and swine influenza, Q fever, leptospiroses, staphylococcal diseases caused by the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains, and diseases caused by parasitic protozoa. Among other infectious, non-zoonotic agents, the greatest hazard for health care workers pose the blood-borne human hepatitis and immunodeficiency viruses (HBV, HCV, HIV). Of interest are also bacteria causing legionellosis in people occupationally exposed to droplet aerosols, mainly from warm water.

Abstract
A total of 174 unfed Ixodes ricinus ticks (104 nymphs, 36 males, and 34 females) collected in the Roztocze National Park in eastern Poland were examined by the PCR and nested PCR methods for the presence of hantavirus RNA. None of the examined Ixodes ricinus specimens showed the presence of the hantavirus-specific RNA, in spite of using 2 genetic markers and the clearly positive results obtained with the positive control. Thus, a hypothesis about the possible participation of ticks in the transmission of hantaviruses, has so far not been confirmed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to reproduce in laboratory conditions hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) pathogenesis in a new animal model predictive of the human response, and to select the microbial antigen associated with organic dust that exerts the strongest pathogenic effect on the respiratory organ. To achieve this goal, mice of the strain C57BL/6J prone to fibrosis were exposed for 1 hour daily up to 28 days to the inhalation of aerosols of each of the 5 microbial components of organic dusts whose conjunction with the occurrence of HP has been confirmed by numerous authors: Pantoea agglomerans saline extract (SE), P. agglomerans microvesicle-bound endotoxin, Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula SE, Aspergillus fumigatus SE, saline extract of dust from a grain sample overgrown with S. rectivirgula and Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, and a saline solvent (PBS) was used as a control. Exposure of the animals to organic dust components was conducted using a novel inhalation challenge set. Lung samples were collected from untreated mice and from mice exposed for 7 and 28 days, and examined by digitalized histopathology and biochemistry for the presence of inflammatory changes and fibrosis. P. agglomerans SE appeared to be the sole antigen which evoked a statistically significant fibrosis and a significant increase of hydroxyproline in the lungs of mice exposed for 28 days to this extract, both compared to the mice untreated and to those exposed to the solvent. P. agglomerans SE also evoked the strongest and statistically significant inflammatory response in the lungs of the mice, both after 7 and 28 days of exposure. After 7 days, significant inflammatory changes were also found in mice exposed to A. fumigatus SE, and after 28 days in mice exposed to all antigens. In conclusion, our results allow us to define a useful animal model of HP which can be a supplement for now commonly used bleomycin model. This model should comprise: present set of instruments for inhalation, mice of the line C57BL/6J and the saline extract of P. agglomerans as the antigen. For a better understanding of the presented results, a detailed study covering immunological investigations, focused on the mechanism of antigen action, are needed.

Abstract
Serology testing is an appropriate method for the detection of slaughter animals infected with Toxoplasma, which remain one of the main reservoirs of this parasite in the environment. Competitive ELISA (cELISA) in indirect modification was worked out and optimized for detecting antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in pigs and cattle. Preliminary validation process showed that the sensitivity and specificity of cELISA obtained in pigs was better than in cattle (88.1% and 94.5% vs. 76.9% and 93.4%, respectively). Sera of 861 pigs and 865 cattle were examined with newly worked out cELISA test and modified agglutination test (MAT) (Toxo-Screen DA, bioMérieux, France). In the total of 1,726 examined animal sera, seropositive results were obtained in 15.0% by cELISA (15.4% in pigs and 14.6% in catttle), and in 13.6% by MAT (14.3% in pigs and 12.8% in cattle). Significant differences in percentages of positive results among populations of the studied animals from various areas of Poland were noted. Obtained results showed the usefulness of cELISA for examining sera of slaughter animals (especially pigs). The considerable rates of infection of slaughter animals with T. gondii in the area of research indicate a potential threat to human health.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to review the studies on bioaerosols which were carried out in the years 1972-2009 in following branches of agricultural industry in the Ukraine and Poland: animal farms for cows and pigs, animal feed facilities, production of biofuel from rape, herb farms and herb processing facilities. In all facilities were determined: concentration of dust and microorganisms in the air and species composition of microflora. Moreover, in Polish animal farms, herb farms and herb processing facilities, as well as in the Ukrainian animal feed facilities, was determined the concentration of bacterial endotoxin in the air. Dust concentrations in animal farms located in the Ukraine and Poland ranged from 6-200 mg/m(3) and from 0.25-14.05 mg/m(3), respectively, while in animal feed facilities they ranged from 35-306 mg/m(3) and from 3.8-405 mg/m(3), respectively. Dust concentrations in the facilities producing biofuel from rape in the Ukraine were in the range 3.6-28 mg/m(3), whereas on herb farms and in herb processing facilities in Poland they were in the range 0.8- 1,319.6 mg/m(3), and 2.2-946 mg/m(3), respectively. The determined values exceeded in most cases the maximal acceptable concentration (MAC) which in the Ukraine and Poland is equal to 4 mg/m(3). The concentrations of microorganisms on animal farms located in the Ukraine and Poland ranged from 5.5 x 10(4)- 1.9 x 10(7) cfu/m(3) and from 4.7 x 10(4)-1.5 x 10(6) cfu/m(3), respectively, while in animal feed facilities they ranged from 2.7 x 10(4)-2.6 x 10(9) cfu/m(3) and from 1.7 x 10(3)-2.0 x 10(6) cfu/m(3), respectively. Concentrations of microorganisms in the facilities producing biofuel from rape in the Ukraine were in the range 1.5 x 10(3)-5.7 x 10(6) cfu/m(3), whereas on herb farms and in herb processing facilities in Poland they were in the ranges of 8.8 x 10(2)-8.0 x 10(6) cfu/m(3), and 9.7 x 10(3)-6.3 x 10(5) cfu/m(3), respectively. The determined values exceeded in most cases the maximal acceptable concentration (MAC) which in the Ukraine is equal to 5.0 x 10(4) cfu/m(3). The concentrations of endotoxin in Polish animal houses were in the range 0.00125-75.0 ug/m(3), whereas on herb farms and herb processing facilities they were in the ranges of 0.0045- 2,448.8 ug/m(3) and 0.2-681.0 ug/m(3), respectively, and in the Ukrainian animal feed facilities were within the range 0.008-240.0 ug/m(3). They exceeded in most cases the level of 0.2 ug/m(3) proposed as a threshold. In the air microflora of examined facilities prevailed Gram-positive bacteria (corynebacteria, cocci, spore-forming bacilli, actinomycetes) of which some (Arthrobacter spp., thermophilic actinomycetes) could be a cause of allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis). Among Gram-negative bacteria isolated from the air of agricultural settings dominated the epiphytic species Pantoea agglomerans, possessing potent allergenic and endotoxic properties. Fungi were abundant in the air of the Ukrainian agricultural settings and comprised species able to produce harmful mycotoxins. In conclusion, the airborne biological factors in stated concentrations may exert harmful effects on the state of the health of exposed workers. Formation of the bioaerosol depends on the specificity of the setting, kind of technological operations, degree of mechanization, properties of processed materials, temperature and humidity, and concentration of dust in the air.

Abstract
The effect of mechanical alloying on the microstructure of atomized 6061 aluminium alloy powder and 6061 powder with a zirconium addition was studied in the work. The atomized 6061 aluminium alloy powder and 6061 powder with addition of 2 wt.% Zr were milled in a planetary ball mill and investigated using X-ray diffraction measurements, conventional and high-resolution electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM) and high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. An increase of stresses was observed in milled powders after the refinement of crystallites beyond 100 nm. In the powder with zirconium addition, some part of the Zr atoms diffused in aluminium forming a solid solution containing up to 0.5 wt.% Zr. The remaining was found to form Zr-rich particles containing up to 88 wt.% Zr and were identified as face centred cubic (fcc) phase with lattice constant a= 0.48 nm. That fcc phase partially transformed into the L1(2) ordered phase. Eighty-hour milling brought an increase of microhardness (measured with Vickers method) from about 50 HV (168 MPa) for the initial 6061 powder to about 170 HV (552 MPa). The addition of zirconium had no influence on the microhardness.

Abstract
The present study examines a friction stir welded 2017A aluminium alloy. Transmission electron microscope investigations of the weld nugget revealed the average grain size of 5 microm, moderate density of dislocations as well as the presence of nanometric precipitates located mostly in grains interiors. Scanning electron microscope observations of fractures showed the presence of ductile fracture in the region of the weld nugget with brittle precipitates in the lower part. The microhardness analysis performed on the cross-section of the joints showed fairly small changes; however, after the artificial ageing process an increase in hardness was observed. The change of the joint hardness subject to the ageing process indicates partial supersaturation in the material during friction stir welding and higher precipitation hardening of the joint.

Abstract
Elemental powders of Co, Ni and Al in the proper amounts to obtain Co(35)Ni(40)Al(25) and Co(40)Ni(35)Al(25) nominal compositions were ball milled in a high-energy mill for 80 h. After 40 h of milling, the formation of a Co (Ni, Al) solid solution with f.c.c. structure was verified by a change of the original lattice parameter and crystallite size. Analytical transmission electron microscopy observations and X-ray diffraction measurements of the final Co (Ni, Al) solid solution showed that the crystallite size scattered from 4 to 8 nm and lattice parameter a = 0.36086 nm. The chemical EDS point analysis of the milled powder particles allowed the calculation of the e/a ratio and revealed a high degree of chemical homogeneity of the powders. Hot pressing in vacuum of the milled powders resulted in obtaining compacts with a density of about 70% of the theoretical one. An additional heat treatment increased the density and induced the martensitic transformation in a parent phase. Selected area diffraction patterns and dark field images obtained from the heat-treated sample revealed small grains around 300 nm in diameter consisting mainly of the ordered gamma phase (gamma'), often appearing as twins, and a small amount of the L1(0) ordered martensite.

Abstract
Ball milling of easy glass forming Ti(25)Zr(17)Ni(29)Cu(29) alloys lead to the formation of an amorphous structure accompanied by a substantial increase of powder microhardness. The powders show clear glass transition effect and a few stage crystallization starting above 500 degrees C. High-resolution transmission electron microscope technique allowed identifying nanocrystalline inclusions as Cu(12)NiTi(7) within the amorphous powder. The amorphous powders mixed with nanocrystalline iron or silver powders were hot pressed to form composites. A narrow 200 nm broad intermediate single-phase layer at the amorphous-phase/iron interface containing all elements present in the composite was identified using transmission electron microscope and high-angle annular dark field detector techniques. scanning transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive spectroscopy line profile showed gradual change of composition within the intermediate zone. Amorphous phase contains small nanocrystals of size close to 10 nm identified using High-resolution transmission electron microscope as Cu(12)NiTi(7.) Compression tests have shown better plasticity of composites than in the case of pure hot-pressed amorphous powder; furthermore, high elastic limit of composites and the ultimate compression stress of about 1800 MPa for composites containing 20% Fe and near 700 MPa for those with 20% Ag.

Abstract
A total of 119 unpasteurized milk samples taken from 63 cows, 29 goats and 27 sheep bred on 8 farms situated on the territory of the Lublin province (eastern Poland), an area of risk of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), were examined for the presence of RNA of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) by the nested RT-PCR method. Milk samples were also tested for the presence of anti-TBEV antibodies by ELISA test. By RT-PCR, the greatest prevalence of TBE virus was found in the milk of sheep (22.2%), followed by milk of goats (20.7%) and cows (11.1%). By ELISA, the greatest prevalence of anti- TBEV antibodies was found also in the milk of sheep (14.8%), followed by milk of cows (3.2%) and goats (0%). The results suggest a potential risk of infection with TBEV by drinking raw milk on endemic areas of TBE, and indicate a need for milk pasteurization before consumption.

Abstract
A total of 254 humans and 489 domestic animals living on farms in the Lublin province (eastern Poland) were examined for the presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii using, respectively, the ELFA and direct agglutination tests. In parallel, 182 samples of potable water, mostly from shallow household wells, were taken on farms and examined for the presence of T. gondii by microscopy and PCR. The frequency of seropositive reactions in farm inhabitants (66.9 percent) was significantly greater (p < 0.01) compared to the reference group of 39 healthy urban dwellers (41.0 percent). A highly significant positive correlation was found between the age of examined farm inhabitants and the rate of positive reactions with Toxoplasma antigen (p < 0.0001). Among domestic animals, the greatest frequency of seropositive reactions to T. gondii occurred in cats (75.0 percent) and dogs (53.6 percent), less frequent in cattle (33.8 percent) and hens (33.5 percent) and the least frequent in pigs (17.9 percent) and ducks (21.2 percent). The presence of T. gondii was found in potable water samples taken from water intakes on farms: in 12.6 percent of samples by microscopy, and in 22.5 percent of samples by PCR. Among 19 water samples taken from bathing places on the territory of the Lublin province, 2 samples positive for T. gondii (10.5 percent) were found by microscopic examination and confirmed by PCR . The presence of live parasites in water samples was demonstrated by the isolation of Toxoplasma gondii strains in mice. By use of RFLP -PCR it was found that the majority of isolated Toxoplasma strains (78.0 percent) belonged to clonal type I which is most virulent for humans and animals. Although no statistically significant relationship between the presence of T. gondii in water and occurrence of seropositive reactions in farm inhabitants and/or domestic animals could be found, the above-mentioned data suggest a potential role of potable water in the spread of toxoplasmosis in the rural environment.

Abstract
Two powder alloys from the beta phase region of compositions Co(28.5)Ni(36.5)Al(35) and Co(35)Ni(30)Al(35) were ball milled for 80 h in a high energy ball mill. The formation of amorphous structure was observed after 40 h of milling and further milling did not change their structure. The analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HREM) examination of powder structure showed that nanoparticles of L1(0) phase of size of about 5 nm were present within the amorphous matrix. The vacuum hot pressing of the milled powders under pressure of 400 MPa at 700 degrees C for 12 min resulted in the formation of compacts with density of about 70% of the theoretical one. The additional heat treatment at 1300 degrees C for 6 h followed by water quenching, led to significant improvement of density and induced the martensitic transformation manifested by a broad heat effect. The characteristic temperatures of the transformation were determined using DSC measurements, which revealed only small differences within the examined alloys compositions. TEM structure studies of heat-treated alloys allowed to identify the structure of an ordered beta (B2) phase and L1(0) martrensite.

Abstract
Amorphous powder of composition corresponding to Ni60Ti20Zr20 (in at%) was obtained by ball milling in a high-energy mills starting from pure elements. Formation of the amorphous structure was observed already after 20 h of milling, although complete amorphization occurred after 40 h. The microhardness of powders increased from about 30 HV for pure elements to above 400 HV (1290 MPa) after 40 h of milling. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) allowed to identify nanocrystalline inclusions of intermetallic phases of size 2-10 nm. Uniaxial hot pressing was performed in vacuum at temperature below the crystallization T(x) it is 510 degrees C and pressure of 600 MPa, Mixed amorphous powders and nanocrystalline silver powders were used to form a composite, in which microhardness was near 970 MPa HV and 400 HV for the amorphous phase and nanocrystalline silver, respectively. The compression strength of the composite containing 20 wt% of nanocrystalline Ag powder was equal to 600 MPa and plastic strain was 2%. Microstructure studies showed low porosity of composites of less than 1%, uniform distribution of the silver phase and a transition zone between both components, about 150 nm thick, where diffusion of nickel, niobium and zirconium into silver was observed. High-resolution TEM allowed identifying the structure of nanocrystalline inclusions in the amorphous matrix after hot pressing as either Ni(3)Zr or Ni(17)Nb(3). The identification was performed basing on measurements of angles and interatomic distances using inverse Fourier transformed images with enhanced contrast using Digital Micrograph computer program.

Abstract
The cathelicidin LL-37 is an antimicrobial and lipopolysaccharide neutralizing peptide, possessing pro-inflammatory, tissue repair and remodeling activities. Recent reports indicate that the progression of COPD might be connected with increased levels of LL-37. The numerous experimental data show the potential role of LL-37 in the response to the exposure to organic dust (containing lipopolysaccharide and microorganisms) which is one of the major COPD causative factors. This work strives to further prove the role of LL-37 in the development of COPD. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 30 farmers in the early stages of COPD according to GOLD, 36 healthy farmers and 16 healthy urban dwellers. Collection of induced-sputum samples and lung function testing were conducted before and after work. The quantification of the LL-37 in sputum samples was performed by mass spectrometry and radioisotope techniques. Levels of granzymes A and B, IL-8, IFN-gamma and TGF-beta1 in sputum were measured by ELISA technique. Statistical analysis was conducted by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Significantly higher levels of LL-37 were observed in sputum samples from farmers with COPD compared to healthy individuals. The concentration of LL-37 in sputum from farmers was significantly higher compared to urban dwellers. The same was true for both granzymes A and B. The results of this study suggest that LL-37 and granzymes A and B may add to the development of COPD. The results suggest also their role in an organism's response to organic dust exposure.

Abstract
The objective of present work was to determine and compare the components of bioaerosol in several sectors of plant processing industries. The study was conducted in 10 facilities engaged in herb and grain processing, flax threshing, grain storing, baking, and cereals production. The air samples were taken on glass fibre filters with an AS-50 sampler. We determined the concentrations of airborne microorganisms, dust, endotoxin and peptidoglycan. Total concentrations of viable airborne microorganisms ranged from 0.18-861.4 x 10(3) cfu/m(3). The highest levels of microbial contamination of the air were observed at flax farms, in grain elevators and in a herb processing plant. Gram-positive bacteria and fungi were detected at all sampling sites and their median concentrations were respectively 18.1 x 10(3) cfu/m(3) and 0.66 x 10(3) cfu/m(3). The concentration of Gram-negative bacteria ranged from 0.0-168.0 x 10(3) cfu/m(3). The concentration of thermophilic actinomycetes ranged from 0.0-1.45 x 10(3) cfu/m(3). Qualitatively, Gram-positive bacteria constituted 23-93% of the total microbial count. The most common species were: Staphylococcus spp., Curtobacterium pusillum, Rhodococcus fascians, Aureobacterium testaceum, Sanguibacter keddieii, Microbacterium spp., and Bacillus spp. Gram-negative bacteria formed 0-48% of the total count. The species Pantoea agglomerans dominated in all examined air samples. Fungi constituted 2.5-76.9% of the total microbial count. Among them, Penicillium spp., Mucor spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus spp. were found. The dust concentration ranged from 0.18-86.9 mg/m(3). The concentration of endotoxin was large and ranged from 0.0041-1562.6 microg/m(3). Muramic acid, the chemical marker of peptidoglycan, was detected in 9 out of 13 (69.2%) collected samples. The concentration of peptidoglycan ranged from 1.93-416 ng/m(3). A highly significant correlation was found between the individual components of bioaerosol determined in this study. The concentration of endotoxin was correlated with the concentration of Gram-negative bacteria, total microorganisms, and peptidoglycan (R>0.9, p<0.001). The concentration of peptidoglycan was correlated with the concentration of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and total microorganisms (R>0.9, p<0.001).

Abstract
Ticks are very important vectors of pathogenic microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, protozoans), which may induce serious contagious diseases in humans and in farm animals. The aim of the study was to determine the coincidence of 3 pathogens: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti in Ixodes ricinus ticks in south-eastern Poland and to estimate the degree of infection with each of the examined pathogens depending on the developmental stage of ticks (nymph, female, male). The study material were 1,620 Ixodes ricinus ticks collected at 5 sites in the Lublin macroregion, showing the presence of various forest biotopes. The PCR method was used to identify DNA for B. burgdorferi and A. phagocytophilum, and the nested-PCR - for B. microti. In 1,368 (84.44%) of the 1,620 examined ticks no infections were found. Single infections were noted in 217 ticks (13.4%) and coinfections were detected in 35 specimens (2.16%). The most common was the coincidence of A. phagocytophilum with B. microti (17 infected specimens, 1.05% of the total number). A similar result was obtained for the coincidence of B. burgdorferi s. l. with A. phagocytophilum (15 infected specimens, 0.93% of the total number). Only 2 cases of the coinfection of B. burgdorferi s. l. with B. microti, which equals 0.12% of the total number, were found. Infection with all 3 pathogens was identified in only 1 female tick (0.06% of the total number).

Abstract
A novel inhalation challenge set for the study of experimental allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) in mice was designed. A finely dispersed aerosol of allergenic extract generated by the commercial ultrasonic nebulizer "TAJFUN MU1" (produced by Medbryt, Warsaw, Poland) was transported to the airtight inhalation chamber. In the chamber were placed 15 perforated containers made of transparent plastic, each containing one mouse. They were coupled in 3 units, each consisted of 5 containers. The constant flow of aerosol through the chamber was assured by commercial vacuum pump "PL 2/3" (AGA LABOR S.C., Warsaw, Poland). The applied set enabled the natural exposure of mice via the inhalation route to known quantities of allergen (usually microbial) suspended in saline, and then dispersed in form of fine aerosol by ultrasonic nebulizer. This method assures the penetration of allergen into the deep parts of lungs, alveoli and bronchioli. The detailed study of histopathological and biochemical changes in the lungs of exposed animals will be the subject of further publications. So far, the retention of endotoxin in the lungs of mice exposed to the extract of a Gram-negative bacterium Pantoea agglomerans and appearance of positive serologic reactions to this extract indicate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract
The microbiological composition of tobacco products was studied using culture and chemical analysis (of tobacco leaves) or chemical analysis only (tobacco and tobacco smoke). The chemical analyses utilized gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for determining 3-hydroxy fatty acids, muramic acid, and ergosterol as markers of respectively lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan, and fungal biomass. Mesophilic bacteria dominated in both fresh and cured tobacco leaves; a range of additional bacteria and fungi were also found albeit in minor amounts. The peptidoglycan and LPS concentrations were approximately the same in tobacco leaves as in cigarette tobacco. The concentrations of the measured microbial components were much lower in some cigarettes locally produced in China, Korea, and Vietnam than in cigarettes of international brands purchased in the same countries, and the concentrations in the smoke were in general agreement with the concentrations in cigarette tobacco. No differences in microbial load in tobacco of "light" and "full flavor" cigarettes were seen. Storing cigarettes at high humidity resulted in elevated levels of fungi in the cigarette tobacco leading to increased ergosterol concentrations in the smoke. The fact that tobacco smoke is a bioaerosol may help to explain the high prevalence of respiratory disorders among smokers and non-smokers exposed to second hand smoke since the same symptoms are also commonly associated with exposure to bioaerosols.
