Thermally induced parametric instability in a back-action evading measurement of a micromechanical quadrature near the zero-point level

We report the results of back-action evading experiments utilizing a tightly coupled electro-mechanical system formed by a radio frequency micromechanical resonator parametrically coupled to a NbTiN superconducting microwave resonator. Due to excess dissipation in the microwave resonator, we observe a parametric instability induced by a thermal shift of the mechanical resonance frequency. In light of these measurements, we discuss the constraints on microwave dissipation needed to perform BAE measurements far below the zero-point level.

Anti-Obesity Effects of Chitosan and Psyllium Husk with L-Ascorbic acid in Guinea Pigs

The aim of this study was to investigate whether L-Ascorbic acid would facilitate the anti-obesity effects of chitosan and psyllium husk in vivo. The study was carried out with male Hartley guinea pigs for 5 weeks. The results show that chitosan itself did not influence body weight gain and food efficiency ratio (FER). However, the addition of L-Ascorbic acid to chitosan decreased these parameters; the body weight gain and FER in the chitosan-2 group (high-fat diet group with 5 % chitosan containing 0.5 % L-Ascorbic acid) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that in F-controls (high-fat diet group), and was similar to that in controls (normal diet group). L-Ascorbic acid enhanced significantly (p < 0.05) the increases of total fecal weight and fecal fat excretion by chitosan. The addition of L-Ascorbic acid to psyllium husk did not differ from psyllium husk alone in terms of changes in weight gain, plasma lipid levels, and fat pad weight. We found that the addition of L-Ascorbic acid to chitosan influenced the reduction in body weight gain and FER, and the increase in total fecal weight and fecal fat excretion in guinea pigs fed a high-fat diet.

Nanomechanical measurements of a superconducting qubit

The observation of the quantum states of motion of a macroscopic mechanical structure remains an open challenge in quantum-state preparation and measurement. One approach that has received extensive theoretical attention is the integration of superconducting qubits as control and detection elements in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Here we report measurements of a NEMS resonator coupled to a superconducting qubit, a Cooper-pair box. We demonstrate that the coupling results in a dispersive shift of the nanomechanical frequency that is the mechanical analogue of the 'single-atom index effect' experienced by electromagnetic resonators in cavity quantum electrodynamics. The large magnitude of the dispersive interaction allows us to perform NEMS-based spectroscopy of the superconducting qubit, and enables observation of Landau-Zener interference effects-a demonstration of nanomechanical read-out of quantum interference.

Infiltration of intratumoral T cells and regulatory T cells are associated with p53 expression and ER status in early breast cancer: a Korean breast cancer study

Background: Immune responses, such as rich lymphocyte infiltrate, have shown associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with breast cancer. Recently, number of tumor-infiltrating regulatory T cell has been identified as a poor prognostic marker. There is, however, not enough data evaluating the associations between the clinicopathologic factors and quantity or quality of TILs in Asian breast cancer patients.&#x2028; Material and methods: CD4-, CD8-, and Foxp3-positive tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) were detected by immunohistochemistry using the paraffin-embedded samples from the 40 patients with early stage (I-III) breast cancer. Expression status of ER, PR, HER-2, p53, and Ki-67 were also evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Clinical data, such as pathologic stage, patient's age, were available for statistical analysis.&#x2028; Results: Statistically significant correlation between ER expression and CD8/CD4 ratio of the TILs (Spearman r=0.447, p=0.024) was observed. Other clinicopathlogical factors, such as PR, tumor size, nodal metastasis, tumor grade, did not show significant correlation with ratio of the TILs. Additionally, tumors with more dense accumulation of p53 protein were associated with recruitment of higher number of Foxp3-positive regulatory T cells (Spearman r=0.52, p=0.0002). Ki-67, a proliferation index of the tumor cells, was also statistically significantly associated with infiltration of regulatory T cells (Spearman r=0.46, p=0.019).&#x2028; Discussion: Our data showed that ER-positive tumors had higher ratio of CD8/CD4 TILs, which is opposite result from the previous studies. In addition, p53 overexpression and high proliferation index of the breast cancer were associated with high regulatory T cell infiltration, but not with total TIL. The role of the p53 overexpression of the tumor cells in determining immune balance and its prognostic implication will be evaluated in the future study.

Identification of occult brain metastases amenable to stereotactic radiosurgery by motexafin gadolinium (MGd) based treatment planning MRI: Results of a phase II trial of MGd and whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)

Background: Motexafin gadolinium (MGd) is a novel anti-cancer agent that selectively localizes in tumors and is detectable by MRI. Previous studies of patients (pts) with brain metastases (BM) demonstrated the detection of occult lesions after MGd administration not visible with gadolinium MRI contrast. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if MRI scanning after MGd improves SRS treatment-planning and treatment outcome by identifying and better defining lesions that can be treated with the SRS boost. Methods: Pts with 1–4 BM (< 4 cm diameter, or, if multiple, < 3cm) received WBRT (37.5 Gy) and MGd, 5 mg/kg/day during weeks 2–3 of WBRT, plus MGd, 5 mg/kg prior to treatment planning MRI and prior to SRS (21 Gy for lesions = 2 cm, 18 Gy for lesions 2.1–3.0 cm, and 15 Gy for lesions 3.1–4.0 cm). MRI was obtained within 4 weeks prior to enrollment with standard contrast, and after WBRT for SRS treatment planning with MGd and standard contrast. Patients were followed for neurologic progression and survival. Results: 45 patients with either lung cancer (76%), breast cancer (11%), melanoma (7%), or other cancers (7%), a median age of 58 years (range 42–74), and a median of 2 BM (range 1–4) were evaluable. In 9 of 42 patients (21%) with MRI data available, the MGd-based treatment planning MRI demonstrated at least one occult lesion not visualized on the screening MRI. The MGd-based treatment planning MRI detected 1 occult lesion in 6 pts, 2 occult lesions in 1 patient, and 3 occult lesions in 2 patients. Median survival for evaluable pts is 10 months; median time to neurologic progression or radiologic progresssion is not reached at 15 months. Grade 3+ neurotoxicity was limited to 1 pt with tumor necrosis and 1 pt with motor weakness. Most common Grade 3+ adverse events were pneumonia (9%) and DVT (9%). Conclusions: MGd-based treatment planning MRI for SRS identified occult BM that are amenable to SRS and are undetected with standard gadolinium contrast agents in 21% of the pts enrolled in this phase II trial. Treatment with MGd, WBRT and SRS to all lesions visualized resulted in improved survival and local control compared with historical results.
