Abstract
The 52 medical bamboo slips entitled Si er ma (Twelve Channels) and Bie mai (Allo-channels) , unearthed from Han tomb in Laoguanshan, are the exclusive medical books concerning channels. Shi er mai is the first work bearing the term " heart dominating channel" , and the running pathways and manifestations of 12 channels. This book could be the major original sources of the 12-channel theories described in the Chapter of Jing mai (Channels) of Ling shu (Miraculous Pivot) . While Bie mai suggests the coexistence of the multi-channel systems at the time when the book was compiled and, together with the 12 "channel" , and 3 "branched collaterals" , these 2 books represent the original condition before the establishment of the mode of channel circulation in Ling shu, and is significant to explore the nature and origin of channel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of folic acid supplementation in childbearing aged women during pregnancy on the birth weight of newborns in Shaanxi province. METHODS A questionnaire survey was conducted among the childbearing aged women selected through multistage stratified random sampling in Shaanxi during 2010-2013, all of these childbearing aged women were in pregnancy or had definite pregnancy outcomes. The birth weight of newborns and folic acid supplementation during pregnancy were used as the dependent variables and independent variables respectively in multiple linear regression model and quantile regression model and confounding factors were controlled. RESULTS Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the birth weight of newborns whose mothers had folic acid supplementation during pregnancy were significantly higher than those whose mothers had no folic acid supplementation during pregnancy, an average increase of 29.56 g(B=29.56, t=4.69 and P<0.01). Quantile regression analysis showed from very low to higher percentiles(q=0-0.55, q=0.65, q=0.75-0.80), the birth weights of newborns whose mothers supplemented folic acid were higher than those whose mother did not supplement folic acid, the difference was significant, but the increase varied. As the increase of the percentiles of birth weight, the body weight increase declined gradually in those whose mothers had folic acid supplementation compared with those whose mothers had no folic acid supplementation. CONCLUSION Folic acid supplementation during pregnancy can increase the birth weight of newborns, the influence was greater in newborns with lower body weight than in newborns with higher body weight.

Abstract
The compilation of medical bamboo slips, Ci shu(Needling Methods), which was unearthed from a Han tomb in Mt. Laoguan, is a monograph dealing exclusively with the principles of clinical acupuncture manipulations with 40 acupuncture prescriptions, being the earliest unearthed work with documented standard methods of acupuncture manipulations and acupuncture prescriptions in China. The chapter Zhen fang (Acupuncture Prescriptions) is the earliest summary of standardized acupoint prescriptions up to now in China, which is of great significance to clinical practice directly derived from ancient clinical performance of acupuncture. The chapter Zhen fang of the book Ci shu is also one of the earliest ancient clinical reports archiving the acupoint. This may provide invaluable perspectives to the study of the conceptualization, origination, development, formation of theoretical system, and clinical application of acupoints.

Abstract
In this study, chemical replacement combined with surface-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CR-SENLIBS) was for the first time applied to improve the detection sensitivities of trace heavy metal elements in aqueous solutions. Utilizing chemical replacement effect, heavy metal ions in aqueous solution were enriched on the magnesium alloy surface as a solid replacement layer through reacting with the high chemical activity metallic magnesium (Mg) within 1 minute. Unitary and mixed solutions with Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr elements were prepared to construct calibration curves, respectively. The CR-SENLIBS showed a much better detection sensitivity and accuracy for both unitary and mixed solutions. The coefficients of determination R2 of the calibration curves were above 0.96, and the LoDs were of the same order of magnitude, i.e., in the range of 0.016-0.386 μg/mL for the unitary solution, and in the range of 0.025-0.420 μg/mL for the mixed solution. These results show that CR-SENLIBS is a feasible method for improving the detection sensitivity of trace element in liquid sample, which definitely provides a way for wider application of LIBS in water quality monitoring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression of transcription factors snail and slug in epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) of human lens epithelial cells (HLEC) induced by transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2). METHODS Experimental research. HLEC were treated with different concentrations of TGF-β2 (1.0 and 10.0 μg/L) for different time. The morphological changes were observed under inverted microscope. The expression and cellular localization of snail and slug were evaluated by immunofluorescence. Expressions of snail, slug, E-Cadherin and α-SMA were further determined by Western blot analysis. Single factor analysis of variance, rank sum test and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Cultured HLEC were polygonal monolayer cells with tight intercellular adhesion closely and patchy distribution. After treatment of different doses of TGF-β2 for 24 h, HLEC became isolated, exhibited long spindle-like shape as fibroblastic phenotype. The immunofluorescence staining indicated that snail and slug were localized in the nuclei. The expressions of snail and slug appeared to be positive correlative to TGF-β2 dose (snail protein expression: 0.74±0.16, 1.13±0.03, 1.54±0.18 and slug protein expression: 1.96±0.02, 3.12±0.09, 4.07±0.12 in HLEC treated with 0.1, 1.0 and 10 μg/L TGF-β2 respectively) (χ(2)=9.62,P=0.022;F=241.10,P<0.01). In addition, the expression of α-SMA and E-Cadherin showed the similar form (α-SMA protein expression: 0.87±0.04, 1.42±0.11, 2.17±0.36 and E-Cadherin protein expression: 2.50±0.36, 1.65±0.32, 0.41±0.14 in HLEC treated with 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 μg/L TGF-β2 respectively) (χ(2)=9.97,P=0.019;F=19.99,P<0.01). All Pearson correlation coefficient were close to 1. The expression of snail and slug in HLEC were also increased with extending duration of TGF-β2 (1.0 μg/L). The expression levels of both proteins were modestly up-regulated at 8 hours, robustly increased at 24 h, reached peak at 48h and began to decline at 72 h (snail protein expression: 0.90±0.13, 1.43±0.14, 1.96±0.27, 1.57±0.16 and slug protein expression: 0.91±0.36, 1.24±0.16, 2.44±0.26, 1.43±0.16 in HLEC treated with 1.0 μg/L TGF-β2 for 8 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h respectively) (F=12.49,P=0.001;F=14.03,P<0.01). CONCLUSION Transcription factors snail and slug might be time and dose-dependently involved in in-vitro TGF-β2-induced EMT of HLEC. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 285-290).

Abstract
The matrix effect of powder samples, especially for soil samples, is significant in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), which affects the prediction accuracy of the element concentration. In order to reduce this effect of the soil samples in LIBS, the standard addition method (SAM) based on background removal by wavelet transform algorithm was investigated in this work. Five different kinds of certified reference soil samples (lead (Pb) concentrations were 110, 283, 552, 675, and 1141 ppm, respectively) were used to examine the accuracy of this method. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was more than 303 ppm by using the conventional calibration method. After adoption of SAM with background removal by wavelet transform algorithm, the RMSEP was reduced to 25.7 ppm. Therefore, the accuracy of the Pb element was improved significantly. The mechanism of background removal by wavelet transform algorithm based on SAM is discussed. Further study demonstrated that this method can also improve the predicted accuracy of the Cd element.

Abstract
We aimed to compare the diagnostic value of various detection methods for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, to investigate the genetic mechanism associated with CMV infection in pregnant women, and to analyze the risk of sequelae development in fetuses with CMV infection. A total of 300 participants who had the same immunosuppressive regimen and received preemptive therapy for CMV infection were prospectively enrolled in this study; they included 289 vaccine trial participants. The gB-absorbed CMV IgG assay was performed for each vaccine trial participant. The healthy women were divided into 2 groups, and amniotic fluids were collected from them at 15-18 weeks of gestation to test for CMV seropositivity before conception by using IgM specific antibodies, CMV-DNA, and IgG analysis. In 104 cases, cord blood sera and urine specimens were also collected from the infants and examined. The sensitivity and specificity of immediate-early messenger RNA and pp67 (late) messenger RNA detection by the nucleic acid sequence-based amplification technique was comparable to those of virus isolation and PCR. Furthermore, an association between single nucleotide polymorphisms in the TLR-2 gene and congenital CMV infection was observed and confirmed. Moreover, CMV infection during early pregnancy has been shown to have a much more severe effect on the pregnancy outcome compared to infection during later stages of pregnancy.

Abstract
Acute brain ischemia can induce the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs). Hypertension is a critical etiology for brain ischemia. We identified the effects of hypertension on the activation of JNK as well as its impact on SP600125, a JNK inhibitor, during endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in the hippocampus using a rat model. Transient whole-brain ischemia was induced by 4-vessel occlusion (bilateral vertebral and bilateral common carotid arteries) in normal and spontaneous hypertensive rats. SP600125 (0.05 mg/kg, iv) was administered 30 min before ischemia. Morphological changes in hippocampal nerve cells were observed by cresyl violet staining. Phosphorylation of JNK, and expression levels of CHOP and GPR78, markers for ERS, were detected by western blot at 1, 6, 24, and 48 h, and neurological outcomes were measured using an eight-arm radial maze 48 h after ischemia. Hypertension apparently aggravated impairment of memory function, decreased the density of surviving neurons, increased phosphorylation of JNK, and enhanced CHOP expression, but reduced GPR78 levels in hippocampal tissues following brain ischemia. SP600125 alleviated neurological dysfunction, improved neuron survival, decreased phosphorylation of JNK and levels of CHOP, but increased expression of GPR78 in rats with hypertension during cerebral ischemia by inhibition of ERS.

Abstract
We report on the strong photo-bleaching of the photo-darkening (PD) induced loss under the cladding pump of a 793 nm laser diode (LD) in double clad Yb-doped fibers. Up to 68% PD loss at 810 nm was bleached. The bleaching rates under different powers show that the higher pump power corresponds to the more bleached loss within the same time. Moreover, repeatable processes of PD and photo-bleaching were observed when alternately pumped with 915 and 793 nm LDs. Furthermore, it was found that simultaneously pumping the fiber with 915 and 793 nm LDs can suppress about 80% PD loss, compared with pumping the fiber only with 915 nm LD. The mechanism of photo-bleaching under 793 nm pump was also discussed.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of a mixture of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) in repairing the degenerative discs of rabbits, and to provide an experimental basis for its clinical application. BMSCs from rabbits were cultured in vitro and mixed with AFCs. The animal model of degenerative intervertebral disc was built by aspirating the nucleus pulposus (L3-4, L4-5, L5-6, and L6-7) through a posterolateral approach. Mixtures of BMSCs and AFCs (group A), BMSCs alone (B), or saline (C) were injected into test discs, and changes evaluated by plain radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, and histology. After two weeks, each group showed typical internal disc disruption; stenosis of the intervertebral space, weakening T2 disc signal, decreased disc height and expression of type II collagen and glycosaminoglycan, and fibrosis of the nucleus pulposus. After cell transplantation, the disc heights in groups A and B were regained; however, they continued to decrease in group C. The transplanted cells survived in the discs, proliferated after transplantation, and produced copious matrix. Macroscopic and histological evaluations confirmed structural and nuclear preservation in cell-transplanted discs. The secretions and expressions of Type Ⅱ collagen and glycosaminoglycan in group A were statistically significant higher than those in group B (Type Ⅱ collagen, group A 141.6 ± 5.87, group B 139.8 ± 8.65, P = 0.004; glycosaminoglycan, group A 3.008 ± 0.35, group B 2.94 ± 0.29, P = 0.003). Expression of type II collagen and glycosaminoglycan was significantly greater in group A than group B. Therefore, co-transplantation of BMSCs and AFCs can restore the extracellular matrix, making this approach superior to transplantation of BMSCs alone, which may be beneficial for the therapy of intervertebral disc degeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emerging evidence has shown that epidural anesthesia may help to preserve the body's defenses against tumor progression in comparison with general anesthesia in malignant patients receiving operation. This study aims to evaluate the effect of epidural anesthesia on postoperative immune suppression in cervical carcinoma patients undergoing radical resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty five cervical carcinoma patients receiving radical resection were randomized to combined general/epidural anesthesia (study group) or general anesthesia alone (control group). Natural killer (NK) cell activity and serum concentrations of protumorigenic cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and 1L-8) and antitumorigenic cytokines (IL-2 and IFN-γ) were measured before anesthesia (T1), four hours after skin incision (T2), and 24 hours after skin incision (T3) in both groups. RESULTS No difference was observed in basal NK cell activity and cytokine concen- trations between study and control groups. The study group exhibited less suppression of NK cell activity, higher levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ, and lower levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 at T2 and T3 compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS Combined general/epidural anesthesia seems to be helpful to maintain the body's perioperative immune function compared to general anesthesia alone in cervical carcinoma patients receiving operation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze clinical feature and evaluate long-term outcome of patients with thallium poisoning. MATERIALS AND METHODS An observational series of cases with acute thallium poisoning was analyzed retrospectively in West China Hospital of Sichuan University between 2000 and 2010. The clinical data including symptom, determination of thallium level, treatment, neurophysiological examination, and neuropsychological evaluation were analyzed. The patients were followed up until December 2012. RESULTS Seven men and six women were enrolled in the study. The median patient age was 37 years (range: 15-53 years). The median duration of hospitalization was 44 days (range: 7-72). All the patients were misdiagnosed initially. One patient died in the hospital. The other 12 patients were followed for a median of 7 years (range: 1-12 years) after discharge from hospital. One patient died from leukemia in the first year of follow-up. Long-term outcome results showed peripheral neuropathy improved substantially. However, many patients have mild or moderate sequelae in sensory nerve fibers of distal lower extremity. A sural nerve biopsy in one patient revealed shrunken axons, distorted myelin sheath, and myelinated fibers loss. During follow-up period, problem of intelligence (4/12 patients, 33%), memory impairment (4/12, 33%), anxiety (6/12, 50%), and depression (5/12, 42%) were demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS Neurological symptoms may lead to misdiagnosis of thallium poisoning. Mild or moderate neurological sequelae may last for a long time after thallium poisoning.

Abstract
We report new limits on a spin-independent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon interaction cross section using 39.5 kg days of data taken with a p-type point-contact germanium detector of 840 g fiducial mass at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. Crucial to this study is the understanding of the selection procedures and, in particular, the bulk-surface events differentiation at the sub-keV range. The signal-retaining and background-rejecting efficiencies were measured with calibration gamma sources and a novel n-type point-contact germanium detector. Part of the parameter space in the cross section versus WIMP-mass implied by various experiments is probed and excluded.

Abstract
Optical properties of the FePt-C nanocomposite thin film that was synthesized by sputtering with MgO/NiTa underlayer on glass substrate have been determined by an approach combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmission over the wavelength range of 380 - 1700 nm. It was observed that the refractive index is larger than the extinction coefficient, indicating that free electron absorption is not the dominant optical transition in the FePt-C thin film. Compared with FePt thin film, the FePt-C thin film has smaller optical constants, which lead to better optical performance including smaller optical spot on recording media and higher transducer efficiency for heat assisted magnetic recording.

Abstract
Aegilops biuncialis can be hybridized with wheat (Triticum spp) and has been used for wheat breeding and genetic studies. The A. biuncialis karyotype (U(b) U(b) M(b) M(b)) was investigated based on three A. biuncialis accessions grown in China. Two pairs of SAT chromosomes were identified as 1U(b) and 5U(b), with a karyotype formula of 2n = 4x = 28 = 14m + 10sm + 4st. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and C-banding approaches were used to analyze the A. biuncialis accession chromosomes at the mitotic stage. Based on the C-banding and FISH patterns, all U(b) and M(b) chromosomes could be discriminated simultaneously; the three A. biuncialis accessions exhibited similar patterns, suggesting a common origin. The U(b) genome from A. biuncialis resembled the U genome in the diploid species A. umbellulata, and it may be related to the tetraploid species containing the U genome. The M(b) genome had some differences compared to the M genome in the diploid species A. comosa, and it may be related to the tetraploid species possessing the M genome. A generalized ideogram was proposed for the A. biuncialis genome, which could be useful for standardized and accurate identification of the A. biuncialis karyotype and chromosomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinicopathological data of 13 cases of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) of the uterine cervix who received treatment at this medical institutions over the past five years with patient survival as the primary endpoint. MATERIALS AND METHODS The clinicopathologic data of 13 cases were reviewed. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against synaptophysin and chromogranin A and Ki-67. Survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank tests. RESULTS The median age of these patients was 37 years (range 21-62). Immunohistochemistry showed that the positive rate of synaptophysin and chromogranin A was 100% (13/13) and 69.23% (9/13), respectively. The median survival of patients with early-Stage I-II SCNEC of the uterine cervix (17.5 months) was significantly higher than that of patients with advanced stage SCNEC of the uterine cervix (four months) (p < 0.05). There was no local recurrence in all 13 patients. Five patients died of distant metastasis in less than six months. CONCLUSION SCNEC of the uterine cervix is a highly-malignant disease and early-stage patients showed significantly longer survival compared to late-stage patients. Early diagnosis and prompt combination treatment may improve the outcome of patients with SCNEC of the uterine cervix.
