Abstract
We investigated the association between polymorphisms rs1801282 and rs3856806 of the PPARγ gene and metabolic syndrome (MS) among Uyghurs and Kazakhs. Mass spectrometry techniques were used to detect the PPARγ genotypes rs1801282 and rs3856806 in 987 subjects, CC genotype and C allele frequencies were 83.6 and 91.7%, respectively, at rs1801282 in Kazakhs, which were higher than those in Uyghurs (72.3 and 85.0%, respectively; P < 0.05). CC genotype and C allele frequencies were 73.6 and 85.3%, respectively, at the rs3856806 loci in Kazakhs, which were higher than those in Uyghurs (60.7 and 77.9%, respectively; P < 0.05). For the rs3856806 polymorphism in Kazakhs, CT/TT genotype and T allele frequencies were 21.2 and 12.4% for MS subjects, which were lower than those for the control group (31.6 and 17.0%, respectively; P < 0.05). Risk analysis of Kazakhs revealed that individuals with the CT and TT genotypes at rs3856806 had an increased risk, 0.524- and 0.770-fold, respectively, of developing MS than those possessing the CC genotype. Individuals with the T allele also had an increase in risk, by 0.699-fold, of developing MS than those with the C allele. For Uyghurs, those with the CC genotype at rs1801282 had higher systolic blood pressure than those with the CG/GG genotype. Among Kazakhs, those with the CC genotype at rs3856806 had higher triglyceride and waist-hip ratio levels but lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than those with the CT/TT genotype. The rs1801282 and rs3856806 PPARγ polymorphisms differ between Uyghurs and Kazakhs from Xinjiang Province, China.

Abstract
Competing interactions make the magnetic structure of MnWO4 highly frustrated, and only the AF2 phase of the three magnetically ordered phases (AF1, AF2, AF3) is ferroelectric. The high frustration may thus allow a possibility to tune the magnetic structure by means of an electric field via magnetoelectric coupling. By using the pyroelectric current method, we measure the remnant ferroelectric polarization in MnWO4 upon application of a poling electric field via two different roadmaps. It is demonstrated that an electric field as low as 10 kV cm(-1) is sufficient to enhance the stability of a ferroelectric AF2 phase at the expense of a non-ferroelectric AF1 phase. This work suggests that electric field induced electrostatic energy, although small due to weak magnetically induced electric polarization, may effectively tune ferroelectric domain structures, and thus the magnetic structure of highly frustrated multiferroic materials.

Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of dyslipidemia in adults of Uygur, Kazak, and Han ethnicity in Xinjiang, China. A questionnaire including general data, physical examination (blood pressure, body height, and body weight) and blood lipid [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] was administered to 11,506 adults in Xinjiang, China from 2009 to 2010 using a stratified sampling method. The overall prevalence rates of dyslipidemia in Uygur, Kazak, and Han adults were 42.4, 31.6, and 30.2%, respectively; they were 42.4, 31.8, and 28.2% after age standardization (P < 0.01). After standardization, the overall prevalence rates in Uygur, Kazak, and Han men were 52.6, 35.4, and 33.2%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that in women of the corresponding ethnicities (P < 0.01). In Uygur, Kazak, and Han adults, there were significant differences with respect to the standardized prevalence rates of high TG (9.3, 9.3, and 17.3%), high TC (5.2, 6.9, and 6%), low HDL-C (33.6, 20.8, and 11.1%), and high LDL-C (2.4, 2.9, and 2%) (P < 0.05). The prevalence rates of dyslipidemia in Uygur, Kazak, and Han adults in Xinjiang are higher than the average levels in China, with significant differences in ethnicity, age, and gender. Han adults exhibited the highest prevalence rate of high TG. Meanwhile, Uygur adults had the highest prevalence rate of low HDL-C. Kazak adults had high prevalence rates of high TC, low HDL-C, and high LDL-C.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors (FGFRs) play important roles in the vascular system. The FGFR4 rs351855 (Gly388Arg) poly morphism has been shown to be a risk factor for many diseases. This case-control study investigated the association between the FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism and susceptibility to ischaemic stroke in the Chinese population. METHODS The FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism was detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in patients with ischaemic stroke and healthy controls. RESULTS Frequencies of genotypes GA and AA, and prevalence of the A allele, were significantly lower in ischaemic stroke patients (n = 952) than in controls (n = 986). Genotype AA and allele A were significantly more frequent in stroke patients with, than in those without, diabetes. CONCLUSION These results suggested that the GA genotype, AA genotype and A allele of FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism are all associated with decreased risk of ischaemic stroke in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Interleukin-18 (IL-18) has been implicated in a wide variety of cellular functions that affect the biological response to tumors. However, there is insufficient evidence to prove that IL-18 gene variants are associated with risk of prostate cancer. We examined a possible association between two promoter polymorphisms, -137G/C (rs187238) and -607C/A (rs1946518), in the IL-18 gene and prostate cancer occurrence and prognosis in Han Chinese. We used a high-resolution melting method to genotype these two polymorphisms in 375 Chinese Han patients with prostate cancer and in 400 age-matched healthy controls. A hundred and eighty-one prostate cancer patients who had been receiving androgen deprivation therapy, including operational and medical castration, were enrolled to follow-up in this study. Carriers of the GG genotype of the -137G/ C polymorphism had a 2.165-times higher risk of prostate cancer progression than carriers of GC [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.270-3.687]. Patients with the GG genotype at clinical stages III and IV also had significantly lower rates of progression-free survival (relative risk = 2.174, 95%CI = 1.211-3.906). However, we found no significant association of genotype or allele distributions of these two polymorphisms with occurrence of prostate cancer. We conclude that there is evidence that the IL-18 gene promoter polymorphism -137G/ C influences the prognosis of prostate cancer patients in androgen deprivation therapy, although neither of the two SNPs contributes to prostate cancer development.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The use of bisphosphonates and the risk of esophageal cancer have recently received increasing concern and related studies have yielded controversial results. The present meta-analysis of observational studies shows that no clear association between bisphosphonate treatment and risk of esophageal cancer was observed. INTRODUCTION Epidemiological evidence suggests that bisphosphonate treatment can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. However, data on this issue are unstable and controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis to provide a quantitative assessment of the association between use of bisphosphonates and risk of esophageal cancer. METHODS We searched the Medline and Embase databases up to May 2012 to identify studies related to bisphosphonates and esophageal cancer. Summary effect estimates with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were derived using a fixed or random effects model, depending on the heterogeneity of the included studies. RESULTS Seven epidemiologic studies that consisted of four cohort studies and three case-control studies were included in this meta-analysis. In our primary analysis, bisphosphonate treatment was not associated with risk of esophageal cancer in both cohort studies [pooled relative risk (RR) 1.23, 95 % CI 0.79-1.92] and case-control studies [pooled odds ratio (OR) 1.24, 95 % CI 0.98-1.57]. Evidence for the presence of significant heterogeneity was found in cohort studies (p = 0.009, I (2) = 74 %) but not in case-control studies (p = 0.338, I (2) = 7.8 %). In our secondary analysis, no significant increased risk of esophageal cancer was found in alendronate users (pooled RR 1.08, 95 % CI 0.67-1.75 in cohort studies; pooled OR 1.16, 95 % CI 0.82-1.63 in case-control studies). CONCLUSIONS Based on current evidences, bisphosphonate treatment was not significantly associated with excess risk of esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Mesona chinensis is an economically important agricultural crop, primarily cultivated for making grass jelly. It was originally discovered in South China. We examined 18 cultivars, including cultivars from Guangdong, Fujian, and Guangxi, China, Taiwan, and Indonesia, and a hybrid (a cross between cultivars from Indonesia and Guangdong), based on RAPD markers. The genetic similarity coefficient was calculated by NTSYS 2.10 and the clustering analysis was made by UPGMA. PCR amplification with 10 primers produced 163 bands; 94% of the amplified loci were polymorphic. The primers S208, S206, and S253 could completely distinguish all 19 samples by constructing a DNA fingerprint. Cluster analysis divided the 19 cultivars into five groups, with an overall genetic similarity coefficient of 0.68. Correlations were found among regional distributions, parental sources, and RAPD markers, demonstrating the rich genetic diversity of these 19 cultivars of M. chinensis. This study provides useful information for the classification, identification, and breeding of M. chinensis.

Abstract
Aerosol samples were collected in Beijing (BD) and Atlanta (GT) from July to August in 2011 using a Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) (0.18-18 microm, eight-stage) for organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) measurement (Sunset Laboratory Inc, USA). The laser intensity of blank filters decreased with temperature in the process of OC & EC analysis because the structure of quartz filters was changed when burned which largely affected the determination of low concentration samples' splits. It would increase the accuracy of OC & EC split to determine it manually after the change of blank filter's laser intensity was recouped. The concentrations and size distributions of OC & EC using the improved method were different from taking the moment when oxygen was introduced as the split. The split may appear before oxygen addition, when the sample was rich in metal or substances that can be decomposed after heated. The concentrations of carbonaceous components were higher at BD than those at GT. The size distributions of OC showed a bimodal pattern with peaks appeared in the particles with size of (0.56-1.0) microm and (3.2-5.6) microm. The peak concentrations of OC were (2.82 +/- 1.59) microg x m(-3) and (1.95 +/- 0.76) microg x m(-3) at BD, and (1.28 +/- 0.41) microg x m(-3) and (0.64 +/- 0.19) microg x m(-3) at GT. EC showed a bimodal pattern at BD with peaks in particles with size of (0.56-1.0) microm and (3.2-5.6) microm, while showed a trimodal pattern at GT. The peak concentrations at BD were (0.32 +/- 0.24) microg x m(-3) and (0.26 +/- 0.19) microg x m(-3). EC at GT was preferably enriched in particles with size of (0.18-0.56) microm, the mass concentrations of EC in this size accounted for 44.6%. The OC and EC were more concentrated in accumulation mode at GT than those at BD, the reason may be that the main pollution source of GT is motor vehicle emission, while there are more industrial gas emissions at BD.

Abstract
Diamond is not only a free standing highly transparent window but also a promising carrier confinement layer for InN based devices, yet little is known of the band offsets in InN/diamond system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to measure the energy discontinuity in the valence band offset (VBO) of InN/diamond heterostructure. The value of VBO was determined to be 0.39 ± 0.08 eV and a type-I heterojunction with a conduction band offset (CBO) of 4.42 ± 0.08 eV was obtained. The accurate determination of VBO and CBO is important for the application of III-N alloys based electronic devices.

Abstract
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure the valence band offset (VBO) of the w-InN/h-BN heterojunction. We find that it is a type-II heterojunction with the VBO being -0.30 ± 0.09 eV and the corresponding conduction band offset (CBO) being 4.99 ± 0.09 eV. The accurate determination of VBO and CBO is important for designing the w-InN/h-BN-based electronic devices.

Abstract
We have previously developed and validated a self-administered questionnaire, modelled after the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Damage Index (SDI), the Lupus Damage Index Questionnaire (LDIQ), which may allow the ascertainment of this construct in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients followed in the community and thus expand observations made about damage. We have now translated, back-translated and adapted the LDIQ to Spanish, Portuguese and French and applied it to patients followed at academic and non-academic centres in North and South America, Portugal and Spain while their physicians scored the SDI. A total of 887 patients (659 Spanish-speaking, 140 Portuguese-speaking and 80 French-speaking patients) and 40 physicians participated. Overall, patients scored all LDIQ versions higher than their physicians (total score and all domains). Infrequent manifestations had less optimal clinimetric properties but overall agreement was more than 95% for the majority of items. Higher correlations were observed among the Spanish-speaking patients than the Portuguese-speaking and French-speaking patients; further adjustments may be needed before the Portuguese and French versions of the LDIQ are applied in community-based studies. The relationship between the LDIQ and other outcome parameters is currently being investigated in a different patient sample.

Abstract
In our study, we spun a negative photoresist layer on top of a plasmonic lens which was formed by adopting a metallic ring structure with a nano-scale width opening. We recorded the beam shape of the Bessel-like beam emitting from the plasmonic lens which formed a high aspect ratio structure. We found that the high aspect ratio structure was higher after exposure as the inner and outer diameter had increased. In addition, we used an oblique incidence on the negative resist metallic ring structure to produce an inclined micro-structure. Different exposure results were obtained with the two different metal thicknesses. Therefore, in our study, we not only proved that it is possible to record the shape of a Bessel-like beam, but we also demonstrated that it is possible to create a plasmonic lens which is capable of creating a high aspect ratio structure through exposure.

Abstract
A passive air sampler was developed for collecting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air mass from various directions. The airflow velocity within the sampler was assessed for its responses to ambient wind speed and direction. The sampler was examined for trapped particles, evaluated quantitatively for influence of airflow velocity and temperature on PAH uptake, examined for PAH uptake kinetics, calibrated against active sampling, and finally tested in the field. The airflow volume passing the sampler was linearly proportional to ambient wind speed and sensitive to wind direction. The uptake rate for an individual PAH was a function of airflow velocity, temperature and the octanol-air partitioning coefficient of the PAH. For all PAHs with more than two rings, the passive sampler operated in a linear uptake phase for three weeks. Different PAH concentrations were obtained in air masses from different directions in the field test.

Abstract
We fabricated a ring containing a single circular groove (RCG) on silver film and which was supported on a glass substrate. We found that by changing the mean radius of the circular groove, the light intensity emitted from the RCG can be modulated by using the scattering light from the circular groove. In addition, we also fabricated circular grooves with the same depth but of different widths so that we could examine the scattering light behavior of the grooves. Herein, we propose a theoretical model which takes into account the amplitude modulation of the cylindrical waves. Our results showed that our proposed model agreed well with the experimental results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between first-trimester hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and risk of low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS Data were obtained from a population-based prenatal care program in China. A total of 88,149 women who delivered during 1995-2000 and had their Hb measured in the first trimester were selected as study subjects. RESULTS The prevalence of anemia (Hb<110 g/L) was 22.1% in the first trimester. The risk of LBW, preterm birth and SGA was increased steadily with the decrease of first-trimester Hb concentration. After controlling for confounding factors, women with Hb 80-99 g/L had significantly higher risk for LBW (OR=1.44, 95% CI 1.17-1.78), preterm birth (OR=1.34, 95% CI 1.16-1.55) and SGA (OR=1.13, 95% CI 0.98-1.31) than women with Hb 100-119 g/L. No elevated risk was noted for women with Hb> or =120 g/L. CONCLUSION Low first-trimester Hb concentration increases the risk of LBW, preterm birth and SGA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microsatellite studies in histologic types B3 and C thymic neoplasia detected gains on chromosome 17q, which contains the Her-2/neu and its juxtaposed topoisomerase 2alpha (T2alpha) genes. The study aimed to evaluate their impact on tumor biology and survival of advanced thymic neoplasia patients. METHODS From 1991 to 2005, 36 consecutive stage IV thymic carcinoma patients were treated, 18 men and 18 women, aged 11 to 84 years. There were 22 thymic carcinoma, 13 type B3, and 1 type B2 thymoma. Patients received treatment consisting of surgical resection, combination chemotherapy with the CAP (cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin, cisplatin) regimen, or radiation therapy potentiated by high-dose weekly 5-fluorouracil infusion. Permutations of these 3 treatment modalities were prescribed as necessary. RESULTS T2alpha gene amplification was detected in 4 of 14 thymic carcinoma and 1 of 15 type B3 thymoma. Three thymic carcinoma patients had Her-2/neu coamplification and these 3 patients had rapidly growing tumor and extensive disease at initial diagnosis. CAP was prescribed in 28 patients and 20 patients responded (response rate, 71.4%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 52.8% to 85%); all responders overexpressed (> or = 10% nuclei positive) the T2alpha protein, whereas 4 nonresponders had very low expression. T2alpha overexpression predicts CAP response, and its absence predicts resistance (P = .001). Overall survival was significantly prolonged if the tumor was resectable (P = .001), of type B3 histology (P = .0039), and had no Her-2 gene amplification (P = .0081). CONCLUSION T2alpha and Her-2/neu genes play a pivotal role in the tumor biology, CAP response, and survival of advanced thymic neoplasia patients.

Abstract
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G has been postulated as an important immunotolerant molecule in maintaining fetal-maternal relationship. Recent reports indicated that the 14-bp deletion/insertion polymorphism in exon 8 of HLA-G gene influences HLA-G mRNA stability and isoform splicing patterns, thus modulating the levels of HLA-G expression. This might play an immunomodulatory role of HLA-G during implantation and pregnancy. In the present study, 109 unrelated fertile control women and 79 women who had experienced recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) were genotyped for the 14-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism. No significant difference was observed in the distribution of 14-bp insertion/deletion genotype between controls and the RSA group. However, a greater number of 14-bp insertion alleles exist in the RSA group than in the controls.

Abstract
Two types of double-sided nanostructure, one possessing a slit aperture with parallel grooves and the other possessing a circular aperture with concentric grooves, were fabricated to examine the similarities and differences of their diffraction behavior in one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) nanostructures. Based on the projection-slice theory, we conjecture that the surface plasmons in these two different nano-scale grooves possess similar modes. A localized surface plasmon (LSP) was used to examine the transmission characteristics induced by the apertures. The transmission characteristics of the slitted nanostructure and the circular nanostructure aperture were then measured. We coupled the transmission spectra measured from these two apertures with a 1-D parallel groove transmission curve simulated by a 1-D rigorous coupled wave analysis. Measured spectra results show reasonable agreement with the simulated data. We propose that the apparent blueshift observed in the peak frequency of a 2-D nanostructure is due to the difference in the shape of the aperture and the spot transmission characteristics of 1-D and 2-D systems as induced by a LSP.

Abstract
In this article, we demonstrate that a subwavelength metal slit surrounded by dielectric surface gratings possesses a directional beaming effect. We propose a surface plasmon diffraction scheme to explain the three kinds of beaming conditions. The numerical simulations of the illustrative structures undertaken used a Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) Method and a Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA) Method. Our simulations were found to be consistent and in agreement with the experimental results. In comparison with other metal structures, we find that dielectric metal structures offer better performance as well as the advantage of being able to be efficiently mass produced for large volume industrial applications.

Abstract
Metastatic hepatic tumours can be treated with hepatic transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Common complications associated with TACE include hepatic insufficiency, fever, and pain. However, pulmonary embolism is rarely documented as a fatal adverse effect. We report a case of pulmonary embolism following TACE in a renal cell carcinoma patient with liver metastases. Total recovery is noted after the effective treatment.

Abstract
SUMMARY To elucidate focal successive histological responses of the neck of wide-necked aneurysm after single stent implantation and stent-assisted coiling, an experimental wide-necked aneurysm model was surgically created in bilateral common carotid arteries of adult dogs. Balloon-expandable porous stents were positioned across the aneurysm necks on both sides. The aneurysm cavity of one side was additionally loosely coiled with Gugliemi detachable coils after stent implantation. The dogs were followed up with ultrasonography and angiography, then sacrificed at two days, one month, and one year and the aneurysm specimen was subjected to macro, micro, and electron microscopic observation. Stent implantation and coiling was successful in eight dogs. This investigation observed that single stent implantation slowed down the blood flow within the aneurysm, but barely induced thrombosis within the aneurysm. There was neointima formation over the stent mesh without thrombus within the aneurysm cavity, but it did not cover the whole aneurysm neck at one year.Aneurysms treated with stent-assisted coiling showed thrombosis within the aneurysms and neointima formation over the whole aneurysm orifice. These results suggest that the neointima could develop over bare stent filament without thrombus within the aneurysm cavity, coils could enhance thrombosis within the aneurysm cavity and facilitate neointima formation over the aneurysm orifice. Stent-assisted coiling may be an alternative option for the treatment of wide-necked aneurysms.

Abstract
The correlations between the serum levels of OPG, RANKL with age, menopause, bone markers, and bone mineral densities (BMDs) at the lumbar spine and proximal femur were studied in 504 pre- and postmenopausal Chinese women aged 20-75 years. We found that age was positively and negatively correlated with serum concentrations of OPG (r = 0.442, P < 0.001) and RANKL (r = -0.263, P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with premenopausal women, postmenopausal women showed higher serum OPG levels (107.6 +/- 3.0 vs 72.0 +/- 1.8 pg/ml, P < 0.001), lower serum RANKL concentrations (4.7 +/- 0.4 vs. 5.8 +/- 0.3 pg/ml, P < 0.001) and RANKL/OPG ratios (0.045 +/- 0. 004 vs. 0.099 +/- 0.008, P < 0.001). Neither serum levels of OPG nor RANKL or RANKL/OPG ratio correlated with BMDs after adjustment of age and menopause. They also showed no differences among normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic postmenopausal women. Serum levels of OPG were positively correlated with urinary excretion of NTx (r = 0.1453, P = 0.006). Serum levels of RANKL (r = -0.1928, P < 0.001) and RANKL/OPG ratio (r = -0.1303, P = 0.013) were inversely correlated with serum concentrations of OC. In multiple regression analysis, up to 20% variance (R(2) = 0.106-0.224) of the OPG-RANKL system in peripheral circulation can be explained by age, menopause and bone markers. These results suggest that although serum OPG and RANKL concentrations were unrelated with BMDs, the age- and menopause- dependent changes of serum OPG and RANKL might be a protective mechanism against the accelerated bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
A 600 bp DNA fragment was amplified by PCR from an adult Schistosoma japonicum cDNA library. Sequence analysis confirmed that this fragment contained an S. japonicum Chinese mainland strain fatty acid binding protein (Sj14FABP) gene. This gene was subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and in Baculovirus/silkworm systems. The recombinant protein from E. coli was a 41 kDa GST fusion protein (rSj14/GST), which could be purified by glutathione agarose affinity chromatography, with a yield of 25 mg/L E. coli culture. The recombinant protein from the Baculovirus/silkworm system was an 18 kDa fusion protein (rSj14/His), which could be purified by Ni-NTA resin chromatography column with a yield of 3.5 mg per silkworm larva. Both rSj14/GST and rSj14/His could be recognized by S. japonicum-infected mouse sera and anti-rSj14/GST mouse sera in Western blotting. The purified recombinant protein was immunogenic in mice, rats and sheep, and 34.3%, 31.9% and 59.2% worm reductions, respectively, were obtained in vaccinated Kunming mice, Wistar rats and sheep vaccinated with Sj14/GST, compared to non-vaccinated control groups. Worm reductions of 48.8% and 49.0% were recorded in Balb/c mice immunized with Sj14/His, compared to non-vaccinated and BCG-vaccinated groups, respectively. These results indicate that rSj14FABP is a promising candidate vaccine for schistosomiasis japonica, particularly as in the rat and sheep vaccination experiments, no adjuvant was used.
