Abstract
Background Small-for-gestational age (SGA) at birth increases risk of development of adult obesity and insulin resistance. A model of SGA rat offspring has been shown to exhibit increased adipose tissue expression of a key adipogenic transcription factor, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), and increased fatty acid de novo synthesis during the nursing period, prior to onset of obesity. PPARγ agonists have been studied for potential use in the prevention of insulin resistance. Moreover, SGA adipocytes exhibit age-dependent differences in lipogenesis as mediated by PPARγ. The effects of PPARγ modulators on lipogenic gene expression and de novo lipogenesis on the age-dependent changes in SGA adipocytes are not known. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the adipogenic and lipogenic potential in SGA adipocytes at postnatal day 1 (p1) and day 21 (p21), 2) to determine how the PPARγ activator- and repressor-ligands affect the lipogenic potential, and 3) to determine the fatty acid metabolic response to PPARγ activator-ligand treatment. Methods Primary adipocyte cultures from p1 and p21 SGA and Control male offspring were established from a known maternal food-restriction model of SGA. Cell proliferation and Oil Red O (ORO) staining were quantified. Adipocytes were treated with increasing doses of rosiglitazone or bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether (BADGE). PPARγ and SREBP1 protein expression were determined. De novo lipogenesis with rosiglitazone treatment at p21 was studied using 50% U13C-glucose and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results At p1 and p21, SGA demonstrated increased cell proliferation and increased ORO staining. At p21, SGA demonstrated increased lipogenic gene expression and increased glucose-mediated fatty acid de novo synthesis compared with Controls. In response to rosiglitazone, SGA adipocytes further increased glucose utilization for fatty acid synthesis. SGA lipogenic gene expression demonstrated resistance to BADGE treatment. Conclusions SGA adipocytes exhibit an enhanced adipogenic and lipogenic potential in early postnatal life. By p21, SGA demonstrated resistance to PPARγ repressor-ligand treatment, and selective response to high dose PPARγ activator-ligand treatment in adipogenic and lipogenic gene expression. p21 SGA adipocytes revealed increased fatty acid de novo synthesis through a complex relationship with glucose metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is only one reported case of recurrent coital headache related to an unruptured saccular aneurysm of the carotid artery. CASE REPORTS We report on two cases of isolated recurrent coital/exertional headaches ipsilateral to unruptured fusiform aneurysms of the vertebral artery diagnosed by CT angiography. While one case is being managed conservatively, a vertebral stent has been set in the other. CONCLUSIONS CT angiography with full visualisation of intracranial and upper cervical arteries could be used as a screening diagnostic procedure in these cases. Together with saccular aneurysms, fusiform aneurysms should be added to the IHS classification as aetiology for exertional recurrent headaches.

Abstract
The authors present a 76-year-old female with high blood pressure and hypercholesterolaemia as cerebrovascular risk factors, who received intravenous thrombolysis for an ischaemic stroke with a progressive neurological improvement. She was asymptomatic at 48 h and she was transferred to the neurology department where antithrombotic treatment was initiated. She began to sit the following day when she suffered a massive pulmonary embolism (PE). Cardiological study showed patent foramen oval persistence and the presence of an atrial septa aneurysm, and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The delay of the onset of the antithrombotic treatment could have been determinant for the massive PE. Thromboembolic complications may be seen after intravenous thrombolysis for ischaemic stroke. An accurate treatment is needed in order to avoid potentially threatening complications such as massive PE.

Abstract
The pine processionary caterpillar is the larval form of the Thaumetopoea pityocampa moth. Mediterranean forests regularly suffer plagues of this insect, which has been moving north as a result of global warming. When the small urticating hairs that develop during the last 3 larval stages are shed and can become airborne. If they come in contact with skin, they can cause a variety of reactions, notably contact urticaria and papular rashes. Irritation can also occur if the hairs lodge in the mucosa of the conjunctiva or in the respiratory tract. Several cases of anaphylactic reactions have been reported in recent years. Mechanical (irritative) mechanisms may be involved in the pathogenesis of lesions, or immunoglobulin E-mediated allergic hypersensitivity reactions may be implicated when the process is rapid, recurrent, and progressively more severe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Bipolar disorder (BP) is a severe psychiatric illness, characterised by alternating episodes of depression and mania, which ranks among the top ten causes of morbidity and life-long disability world-wide. We have previously performed a whole-genome linkage scan on 6 pedigrees segregating severe BP from the well-characterised population isolate of Antioquia, Colombia. We recently collected genotypes for the same set of 382 autosomal microsatellite markers in 9 additional Antioquian BP pedigrees. Here, we report the analysis of the combined pedigree set. METHODS Linkage analysis using both parametric and nonparametric approaches was conducted for 3 different diagnostic models: severe BP only (BPI); mood disorders (BPI, BPII and major depression); and psychosis (operationally defined by the occurrence of at least 1 episode of hallucinations and/or delusions). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION For BPI only, the most interesting result was obtained for chromosome 7p21.1-p22.2 under a recessive model of inheritance (heterogeneity LOD score = 2.80), a region that had previously been linked to BP in a study on Portuguese Island families. For both BPI and mood disorders, nonparametric analyses identified a locus on chromosome 12ct-q14 (nonparametric linkage = 2.55 and 2.35, respectively). This locus has not previously been reported as a candidate region for BP. Additional candidate regions were found on chromosomes 1p22-31 (mood disorders) and 21q21-22 (BPI), 2 loci that have repeatedly been implicated in BP susceptibility. Linkage analysis of psychosis as a phenotype identified candidate regions on chromosomes 2q24-31 and 16p12-q12. The finding on chromosome 16p is noteworthy because the same locus has been implicated by genome-wide association analyses of BP.

Abstract
Support vector machines (SVM) are machine learning tools originally developed in the field of artificial intelligence to perform both classification and regression. In this paper, we show how SVM can be used to determine the most relevant quantities to characterize the confinement transition from low to high confinement regimes in tokamak plasmas. A set of 27 signals is used as starting point. The signals are discarded one by one until an optimal number of relevant waveforms is reached, which is the best tradeoff between keeping a limited number of quantities and not loosing essential information. The method has been applied to a database of 749 JET discharges and an additional database of 150 JET discharges has been used to test the results obtained.

Abstract
As discharge duration increases, real-time complex analysis of the signal becomes more important. In this context, data acquisition and processing systems must provide models for designing experiments which use event oriented plasma control. One example of advanced data analysis is signal classification. The off-line statistical analysis of a large number of discharges provides information to develop algorithms for the determination of the plasma parameters from measurements of magnetohydrodinamic waves, for example, to detect density fluctuations induced by the Alfvén cascades using morphological patterns. The need to apply different algorithms to the signals and to address different processing algorithms using the previous results necessitates the use of an event-based experiment. The Intelligent Test and Measurement System platform is an example of architecture designed to implement distributed data acquisition and real-time processing systems. The processing algorithm sequence is modeled using an event-based paradigm. The adaptive capacity of this model is based on the logic defined by the use of state machines in SCXML. The Intelligent Test and Measurement System platform mixes a local multiprocessing model with a distributed deployment of services based on Jini.

Abstract
The charge-coupled device camera of the TJ-II Thomson scattering (TS) can capture five different classes of images. Typically, different data processing is performed depending on the kind of image that is acquired. The procedure can be automated to recognize the type of image. To this end, machine learning methods (MLM) are applied. However, usually, MLM classify without confidence estimates. An image classifier based on conformal predictors has been developed for the TJ-II TS. It provides a couple of indicators (confidence and credibility) for each classification that measures the accuracy and reliability of the prediction. Results achieve success rates of about 97%. The implemented classifier is valid for any kind of images.
