Experimental Analysis of Damping and Tribological Characteristics of Nano-CuO Particle Mixed Lubricant in Ball Bearings

Experimental analysis of damping capacity and tribological characteristics of nano CuO added Servosystem 68 lubricant is attempted. CuO nano particles were synthesized by aqueous precipitation method and characterized. Prior to dispersion into lubricant, CuO nano particles were coated with 0.2 wt.% surfactant (Span-80) to stabilize the nano fluid. Tribological characteristics of particle added lubricant were tested in ASTM D 4172 four ball wear tester. Scanning electron microscopy test results of worn surfaces of nano CuO particle added lubricant were smoother than base lubricant. The particle added lubricant was applied in a new ball bearing and three defected ball bearings. When particle added lubricant was used, the ball defected bearing's vibration amplitude was reduced by 21.94% whereas it was 16.46% for new bearing and was ≤ 11% for other defected bearings. The formation of protection film of CuO over ball surface and regime of full film lubrication near the ball zone were observed to be reason for improved damping of vibrations.

A dihydrogen phosphate anionic network as a host lattice for cations in 1-methylpiperazine-1,4-diium bis(dihydrogen phosphate) and 2-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridinium dihydrogen phosphate-orthophosphoric acid (1/1)

In the salt 1-methylpiperazine-1,4-diium bis(dihydrogen phosphate), C5H13N2(2+)·2H2PO4(-), (I), and the solvated salt 2-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridinium dihydrogen phosphate-orthophosphoric acid (1/1), C10H9N2(+)·H2PO4(-)·H3PO4, (II), the formation of O-H...O and N-H...O hydrogen bonds between the dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO4(-)) anions and the cations constructs a three- and two-dimensional anionic-cationic network, respectively. In (I), the self-assembly of H2PO4(-) anions forms a two-dimensional pseudo-honeycomb-like supramolecular architecture along the (010) plane. 1-Methylpiperazine-1,4-diium cations are trapped between the (010) anionic layers through three N-H...O hydrogen bonds. In solvated salt (II), the self-assembly of H2PO4(-) anions forms a two-dimensional supramolecular architecture with open channels projecting along the [001] direction. The 2-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridinium cations are trapped between the open channels by N-H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonds. From a study of previously reported structures, dihydrogen phosphate anions show a supramolecular flexibility depending on the nature of the cations. The dihydrogen phosphate anion may be suitable for the design of the host lattice for host-guest supramolecular systems.

Elevated fetal adipsin/acylation-stimulating protein (ASP) in obese pregnancy: novel placental secretion via Hofbauer cells

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE

Obesity in pregnancy is associated with increased risks of obesity in the offspring. We investigated the relationship between obesity in pregnancy and circulating maternal and fetal levels of adipose tissue-derived factors adipsin and acylation stimulating protein (ASP) in lean and obese mothers.

DESIGN

Paired peripheral and cord blood samples were taken. Paired fat and placenta tissue were taken for explant culture. Media were assayed for secreted adipsin and ASP. Clinical parameters assayed included fasting insulin, glucose, and adipsin.

SETTING

The study was conducted at a university hospital maternity unit.

PATIENTS

Patients included 35 lean [body mass index (BMI) 19-25 kg/m(2), mean age 32 years and 39 obese (BMI) > 30 kg/m(2), mean age 32.49 years] pregnant Caucasian women, delivered by cesarean section at term.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

Identification of placental macrophages [Hofbauer cells (HBCs)], as a source of adipsin and ASP was determined.

RESULTS

HBCs secreted both adipsin and ASP. Cord levels of adipsin (1663.78 ± 52.76 pg/mL) and ASP (354.48 ± 17.17 ng/mL) were significantly elevated in the offspring of obese mothers compared with their lean controls [1354.66 ± 33.87 pg/mL and 302.63 ± 14.98 ng/mL, respectively (P < .05 for both)]. Placentae from obese mothers released significantly more adipsin and ASP than placentae from lean mothers [546.0 ± 44 pg/mL · g vs 284.56 ± 43 pg/mL · g and 5485.75 ± 163.32 ng/mL · g vs 2399.16 ± 181.83 ng/mL · g, respectively (P < .05 for both)]. Circulating fetal adipsin and ASP positively correlated with maternal BMI (r = 0.611, P < .0001, and r = 0.391, P < .05, respectively). Fetal adipsin correlated positively with maternal (r = 0.482, P < .01) and fetal homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (r = 0.465, P < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

We demonstrate novel secretion of adipsin and ASP by placental HBCs.

N-H∙∙∙O, O-H∙∙∙O hydrogen-bonded supramolecular sheet formation in the bis(2-aminoanilinium) fumarate, 3-methylanilinium hydrogen fumarate and 4-chloroanilinium hydrogen fumarate salts

In bis(2-aminoanilinum) fumarate, 2C₆H₉N₂⁺·C₄H₂O₄²⁻, (I), the asymmetric unit consists of two aminoanilinium cations and one fumarate dianion, whereas in 3-methylanilinium hydrogen fumarate, C₇H₁₀N⁺·C₄H3O₄⁻, (II), and 4-chloroanilinium hydrogen fumarate, C₆H₇ClN⁺·C₄H3O₄⁻, (III), the asymmetric unit contains two symmetry-independent hydrogen fumate anions and anilinium cations with a slight difference in their geometric parameters; the two salts are isostructural. In (II) and (III), the carboxylic acid H atoms of the anions are disordered across both ends of the anion, with equal site occupancies of 0.50. Both the 4-chloroanilinium cations of (III) are disordered over two orientations with major occupancies fixed at 0.60 in each case. The hydrogen fumarate anions of (II) and (III) form one-dimensional anionic chains linked through O-H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds. Salts (II) and (III) form two-dimensional supramolecular sheets built from R₄⁴16), R₄⁴(18), R₅⁵(25) and C₂²(14) motifs extending parallel to the (010) plane, whereas in (I), an (010) sheet is formed built from two R₄³(13) motifs, two R₂²(9) motifs and an R₄⁴(18) motif.
