Relative contribution of neuromuscular activation, muscle size, and muscle quality to maximum strength output of the thigh muscles in young individuals

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between maximal muscle strength and neuromuscular activation, muscle size, and quality of quadriceps (QF) and hamstring muscles (HM). The study included 24 young men and women. The neuromuscular activation parameter was recorded using a single-channel surface electromyography (EMG) with the root mean square (RMS) during maximal isometric knee extension and flexion from four muscles: rectus femoris and vastus lateralis for QF; biceps femoris and semitendinosus for HM. In addition, the peak torque was measured during the same session. B-mode ultrasonographic transverse images were obtained from the anterior, lateral, and posterior thighs. Furthermore, we calculated the muscle thickness (MT) and echo intensity (EI) of the four muscles as indicators of muscle size and quality. The averaged MT, EI, and absolute RMS of QF were calculated by averaging the values of the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis, and that of HM was calculated by averaging the values of the biceps femoris and semitendinosus. The knee extension peak torque was correlated with EI (r = -0.61, P < 0.01) and RMS (r = 0.53, P < 0.01) in the QF. In contrast, the knee flexion peak torque was correlated with RMS (r = 0.53, P < 0.05) but not with MT and EI in HM. In addition, EI and RMS in QF, and RMS in HM were selected as the major determinants of muscle strength in the stepwise regression analysis. These results suggest that muscle strength is moderately associated with different factors related to the thigh muscles in young individuals.

Base-Induced Dehydrogenative and Dearomative Transformation of 1-Naphthylmethylamines to 1,4-Dihydronaphthalene-1-carbonitriles

Solvothermal treatment of 1-naphthylmethylamine with potassium hydride (KH) or n-butyllithium (n-BuLi)-potassium t-butoxide (t-BuOK) in THF induces unusual two consecutive β-hydride eliminations to form 1-naphthonitrile and KH. The freshly generated KH is hydridic enough to undergo dearomative hydride addition to the resultant 1-naphthonitrile regioselectively at the C4 position to afford α-cyano benzylic carbanion, which could be functionalized by a series of electrophiles, liberating the corresponding 1,4-dihydronaphthalene-1-carbonitriles having a quaternary carbon center.

Cavity-Enhanced 2D Material Quantum Emitters Deterministically Integrated with Silicon Nitride Microresonators

Optically active defects in 2D materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are an attractive class of single-photon emitters with high brightness, operation up to room temperature, site-specific engineering of emitter arrays with strain and irradiation techniques, and tunability with external electric fields. In this work, we demonstrate a novel approach to precisely align and embed hBN and TMDs within background-free silicon nitride microring resonators. Through the Purcell effect, high-purity hBN emitters exhibit a cavity-enhanced spectral coupling efficiency of up to 46% at room temperature, exceeding the theoretical limit (up to 40%) for cavity-free waveguide-emitter coupling and demonstrating nearly a 1 order of magnitude improvement over previous work. The devices are fabricated with a CMOS-compatible process and exhibit no degradation of the 2D material optical properties, robustness to thermal annealing, and 100 nm positioning accuracy of quantum emitters within single-mode waveguides, opening a path for scalable quantum photonic chips with on-demand single-photon sources.

Comparisons in muscle compound action potential parameters measured during standing, walking, and running

The muscle compound action potential (M-wave) has been used as an indicator of peripheral muscle conditions during rest or on isometric muscle contraction. The present study aimed to compare the M-wave parameters during standing, walking, and running. Seventeen young males performed four sets of repeated maximal isometric plantar flexion. Before, after, and between the repeated contraction tasks, M-waves in the soleus muscle were measured during standing, walking, and running. M-waves on walking and running were elicited at the beginning of the swing phase when the soleus muscle was not voluntarily activated. From the detected M-waves, the amplitude, area, and latency for first and second phases were calculated. Amplitudes for first and second phases were not significantly different between standing and walking/running. The area and latency for both phases during walking/running were significantly lower than those during standing (p < 0.05). Significant correlations in amplitude and area were found between standing and walking/running for the first phase (p < 0.05), but not for the second phase (p > 0.05). These results suggest that assessments of the M-wave amplitude for the first phase can be applied to walking and running in the same way as for standing in the soleus muscle.

Acute changes in motor unit discharge property after concentric versus eccentric contraction exercise in knee extensor

This study aimed to investigate the motor unit firing property immediately after concentric or eccentric contraction exercise. Eighteen healthy men performed repetitive maximal isokinetic knee extension exercises with only concentric or eccentric contraction until they exerted less than 80% of the baseline strength. Before and after the fatiguing exercise, high-density surface electromyography of the vastus lateralis was recorded during submaximal ramp-up isometric contraction and individual motor units were identified. Only motor units that could be tracked before and after exercise were analyzed. Muscle cross-sectional area of the vastus lateralis was measured using ultrasound, and electrically evoked torque was recorded before and after the exercise. Sixty-five and fifty-three motor units were analyzed before and after the concentric and eccentric contractions, respectively. The results showed that motor units with moderate to high recruitment thresholds significantly decreased recruitment thresholds under both conditions, and the motor unit discharge rates significantly increased after concentric contraction compared to eccentric contraction. A greater muscle cross-sectional area was observed with concentric contraction. The evoked torque was significantly decreased under both conditions, but no difference between the conditions. These results suggest that fatiguing exercise with concentric contraction contributes to greater neural input to muscles and metabolic responses than eccentric contraction.

Nonreciprocal Directional Dichroism in Magnetoelectric Spin Glass

Optical absorption spectra in the visible and near-infrared light were measured for magnetoelectric spin glass Ni_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}TiO_{3} under various field-cooled conditions. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic-dipole order, this spin-glass system exhibits nonreciprocal directional dichroism (NDD) at zero external field after a magnetoelectric field-cooled procedure. This result is distinct from previous studies on NDD in systems with magnetic toroidal moments induced either by long-range magnetic-dipole order or by applying crossed electric and magnetic fields. The present Letter conclusively demonstrates that the observed NDD originates from magnetoelectrically induced ferroic order of magnetic toroidal moments without conventional magnetic-dipole order.

Interlayer Electron-Hole Friction in Tunable Twisted Bilayer Graphene Semimetal

Charge-neutral conducting systems represent a class of materials with unusual properties governed by electron-hole (e-h) interactions. Depending on the quasiparticle statistics, band structure, and device geometry these semimetallic phases of matter can feature unconventional responses to external fields that often defy simple interpretations in terms of single-particle physics. Here we show that small-angle twisted bilayer graphene (SA TBG) offers a highly tunable system in which to explore interactions-limited electron conduction. By employing a dual-gated device architecture we tune our devices from a nondegenerate charge-neutral Dirac fluid to a compensated two-component e-h Fermi liquid where spatially separated electrons and holes experience strong mutual friction. This friction is revealed through the T^{2} resistivity that accurately follows the e-h drag theory we develop. Our results provide a textbook illustration of a smooth transition between different interaction-limited transport regimes and clarify the conduction mechanisms in charge-neutral SA TBG.

Impact of muscle echo intensity on post-exercise blood pressure response in older normotensive and hypertensive females: Pilot study

Exaggerated post-exercise blood pressure (BP) is considered a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease in older females. Muscle echo intensity (EI) using ultrasound can be used to evaluate intramuscular fat, one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine whether intramuscular fat assessed by muscle echo intensity is associated with the post-exercise BP response in older females. Ten older normotensive (SBP <130 mmHg, 71 ± 4 years), eight systolic BP-controlled (78 ± 4 years), and 17 hypertensive (SBP ≥130 mmHg, 74 ± 6 years) females were studied. After obtaining ultrasound images to assess the EI, participants performed ramp-up exercise until 50% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC: ~30-s; 3% MVC/s gradually increased knee extension force from 0% to 50% MVC followed by sustaining the force at 50% MVC for 10-s) and then five MVCs (~50 s; 10-s rest between each contraction). BP was measured before and immediately after exercise. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) pre- and post-exercise were significantly lower in normotensive and SBP-controlled, than in -uncontrolled hypertensive females (PRE: 85 ± 5 and 87 ± 7 vs. 106 ± 9; POST: 92 ± 8 and 94 ± 9 vs. 103 ± 11 mmHg, respectively, p < 0.05). EI was negatively correlated with ∆diastolic BP (∆DBP) but not ∆SBP and ∆MAP in normotensive females only (∆SBP, r = -0.21, p = 0.56; ∆DBP, R = -0.73, p = 0.02; ∆MAP, R = -0.49, p = 0.15). Greater intramuscular fat as indicated by higher EI is associated with less BP elevation immediately after exercise in older normotensive females. Greater intramuscular fat may lead to lower intramuscular pressure, resulting in less post-exercise BP elevation.

Neuromuscular characteristics during weight loss in a professional boxer: A case study

It is important to understand the effects of rapid changes in weight on neuromuscular functions of combat athletes. The purpose of this case study was to investigate time-course changes in muscle strength, muscle size, and neural input during rapid weight loss in a professional boxer. One professional male boxer (26 yrs) participated in two matches during measurements: welterweight (66.6 kg; weight loss: WL) and super welterweight (69.85 kg; control: CON). His muscle contraction properties and body composition were measured from 6 weeks (baseline) before the matches to 1 week after them. Maximal voluntary isometric knee extension torque, muscle cross-sectional area (mCSA) of the vastus lateralis using ultrasound, and high-density surface electromyography of the vastus lateralis during submaximal ramp-up contraction were measured. Individual motor units were identified, and modified discharge rates were calculated from a regression line between the recruitment threshold and discharge rates at 60-70% of maximum torque according to the baseline value. His body weights for WL and CON decreased from 70.80 and 71.42 kg at the baseline to 68.75 and 71.36 kg immediately before the matches, respectively. Muscle strength changed little for either match. For WL, skeletal muscle mass and mCSA decreased, but there was no decrease for CON. The modified motor unit discharge rate for WL increased immediately before the match compared with other periods, but did not change for CON. After rapid weight loss, neural input increased to compensate for lost muscle mass, and the muscle strength was maintained.

Scaling behavior of electron decoherence in a graphene Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Over the past 20 years, many efforts have been made to understand and control decoherence in 2D electron systems. In particular, several types of electronic interferometers have been considered in GaAs heterostructures, in order to protect the interfering electrons from decoherence. Nevertheless, it is now understood that several intrinsic decoherence sources fundamentally limit more advanced quantum manipulations. Here, we show that graphene offers a unique possibility to reach a regime where the decoherence is frozen and to study unexplored regimes of electron interferometry. We probe the decoherence of electron channels in a graphene quantum Hall PN junction, forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer1,2, and unveil a scaling behavior of decay of the interference visibility with the temperature scaled by the interferometer length. It exhibits a remarkable crossover from an exponential decay at higher temperature to an algebraic decay at lower temperature where almost no decoherence occurs, a regime previously unobserved in GaAs interferometers.

Heat Equilibration of Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Edge Modes in Graphene

Hole-conjugate states of the fractional quantum Hall effect host counterpropagating edge channels which are thought to exchange charge and energy. These exchanges have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental works; in particular, it is yet unclear if the presence of integer quantum Hall edge channels stemming from fully filled Landau levels affects heat equilibration along the edge. In this Letter, we present heat transport measurements in quantum Hall states of graphene demonstrating that the integer channels can strongly equilibrate with the fractional ones, leading to markedly different regimes of quantized heat transport that depend on edge electrostatics. Our results allow for a better comprehension of the complex edge physics in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

Imaging hydrodynamic electrons flowing without Landauer-Sharvin resistance

Electrical resistance usually originates from lattice imperfections. However, even a perfect lattice has a fundamental resistance limit, given by the Landauer¹ conductance caused by a finite number of propagating electron modes. This resistance, shown by Sharvin² to appear at the contacts of electronic devices, sets the ultimate conduction limit of non-interacting electrons. Recent years have seen growing evidence of hydrodynamic electronic phenomena^3-18, prompting recent theories^19,20 to ask whether an electronic fluid can radically break the fundamental Landauer-Sharvin limit. Here, we use single-electron-transistor imaging of electronic flow in high-mobility graphene Corbino disk devices to answer this question. First, by imaging ballistic flows at liquid-helium temperatures, we observe a Landauer-Sharvin resistance that does not appear at the contacts but is instead distributed throughout the bulk. This underpins the phase-space origin of this resistance-as emerging from spatial gradients in the number of conduction modes. At elevated temperatures, by identifying and accounting for electron-phonon scattering, we show the details of the purely hydrodynamic flow. Strikingly, we find that electron hydrodynamics eliminates the bulk Landauer-Sharvin resistance. Finally, by imaging spiralling magneto-hydrodynamic Corbino flows, we show the key emergent length scale predicted by hydrodynamic theories-the Gurzhi length. These observations demonstrate that electronic fluids can dramatically transcend the fundamental limitations of ballistic electrons, with important implications for fundamental science and future technologies.

The relationship between pedal force application technique and the ability to perform supramaximal pedaling cadences

This study aimed to examine the relationship between the pedal force application technique under a specific competitive condition and the ability to perform steady-state pedaling at a supramaximal cadence during a special pedaling test. A total of 15 competitive male cyclists and 13 active, healthy men (novice cyclists, hereafter, novices) performed the pedaling technique test. The test imitated a road cycling competition condition (80% VO2 peak and a cadence of 90 rpm). Additionally, they performed a supramaximal cadence test that evaluated the ability to perform steady-state pedaling for an ultra-high cadence (range of 160–220 rpm) of 30 s stably with a 0.1 kgf. For the pedaling technique test, kinetic data were obtained by the pedal-shaped force platform at 1,000 Hz, and the pedaling technique was determined by the index of force effectiveness (IFE). For the supramaximal cadence test, kinematic data were obtained using a motion capture system at 200 Hz. The supramaximal pedaling cadence (C_max) was determined by measuring exercise time and targeted pedaling cadence. The IFE was 48.0 ± 9.7% in cyclists and 32.0 ± 5.9% in novices. The C_max was 215.5 ± 8.8 rpm in cyclists and 192.2 ± 13.0 rpm in novices. These values were significantly higher for cyclists than for novices. C_max was moderately correlated with IFE (r = 0.64). No significant correlation was observed between C_max and IFE for cyclists only; in contrast, a moderate correlation was observed between these parameters for novices only (r = 0.67). In conclusion, the pedal force application technique under a specific competitive condition is related to the ability to perform steady-state pedaling for supramaximal cadence during the test. Therefore, C_max may be able to explain pedal force application techniques without the need for expensive devices for novices.

Optical Detection of Long Electron Spin Transport Lengths in a Monolayer Semiconductor

Using a spatially resolved optical pump-probe experiment, we measure the lateral transport of spin-valley polarized electrons over very long distances (tens of micrometers) in a single WSe_{2} monolayer. By locally pumping the Fermi sea of 2D electrons to a high degree of spin-valley polarization (up to 75%) using circularly polarized light, the lateral diffusion of the electron polarization can be mapped out via the photoluminescence induced by a spatially separated and linearly polarized probe laser. Up to 25% spin-valley polarization is observed at pump-probe separations up to 20  μm. Characteristic spin-valley diffusion lengths of 18±3  μm are revealed at low temperatures. The dependence on temperature, pump helicity, pump intensity, and electron density highlight the key roles played by spin relaxation time and pumping efficiency on polarized electron transport in monolayer semiconductors possessing spin-valley locking.

Neuromuscular characteristics of front and back legs in junior fencers

In elite fencers, muscle strength and muscle mass of the front leg (FL) are greater than those of the back leg (BL) due to characteristic physiological and biomechanical demands placed on each leg during fencing. However, the development of laterality in their neural and muscular components is not well-understood. The present study investigated neuromuscular characteristics of FL and BL in junior fencers. Nineteen junior fencers performed neuromuscular performance tests for FL and BL, separately. There were no significant differences in the isometric knee extension strength (MVC), unilateral vertical jump (UVJ), vastus lateralis muscle thickness (MT), or motor unit firing rate of the vastus lateralis muscle (MUFR) between FL and BL (p > 0.05). In subgroup analyses, a significantly greater MUFR in FL than BL was noted only in fencers with > 3 years of fencing experience, and significantly greater UVJ in FL than BL was observed solely in fencers with < 3 years of fencing experience (p < 0.05). Strong positive correlations between FL and BL were identified in MVC, MT, and MUFR in fencers with > 3 years of fencing experience, but not in those with < 3 years of experience. These findings suggest that in junior fencers, laterality in neuromuscular performance has not manifested, whereas longer fencing experience induces fencing-dependent laterality in neural components, and laterality in dynamic muscle strength is decreased with fencing experience.

Interlayer excitons in MoSe2/2D perovskite hybrid heterostructures - the interplay between charge and energy transfer

van der Waals crystals have opened a new and exciting chapter in heterostructure research, removing the lattice matching constraint characteristics of epitaxial semiconductors. They provide unprecedented flexibility for heterostructure design. Combining two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with other 2D materials, in particular transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), has recently emerged as an intriguing way to design hybrid opto-electronic devices. However, the excitation transfer mechanism between the layers (charge or energy transfer) remains to be elucidated. Here, we investigate PEA₂PbI₄/MoSe₂ and (BA)₂PbI₄/MoSe₂ heterostructures by combining optical spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that band alignment facilitates charge transfer. Namely, holes are transferred from TMDs to 2D perovskites, while the electron transfer is blocked, resulting in the formation of interlayer excitons. Moreover, we show that the energy transfer mechanism can be turned on by an appropriate alignment of the excitonic states, providing a rule of thumb for the deterministic control of the excitation transfer mechanism in TMD/2D-perovskite heterostructures.

Phylogenetic Separation of Holotrichia Species (Insecta, Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) Exhibiting Circadian Rhythm and Circa'bi'dian Rhythm

A unique two-day rhythm, circabidian rhythm, has been reported in the black chafer, Holotrichia parallela. However, it remains unknown how widely the circabidian rhythm appears in related species. We examined the activity rhythm and phylogeny of congeneric species inhabiting Japan to investigate the appearance of circabidian rhythms in a few subgenera of the genus Holotrichia. We found that Holotrichia picea also exhibited circabidian rhythm. In addition to the regular circabidian pattern, circabidian rhythms with day-switching or with a circadian activity component were also observed. In the day-switching pattern, H. picea switched appearance from odd to even days, or vice versa. In the circadian-like activity patterns, a major night activity and a minor dusk activity appeared alternately. Holotrichia kiotonensis, Holotrichia convexopyga, and Holotrichia loochooana loochooana exhibited a circadian rhythm. Two distinct clades, A and B, were recognized in the histone H3, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, and 16S ribosomal RNA phylogenetic trees. This phylogenetic separation was in accordance with the subgeneric classification based on external morphology in a previous study and with behavioral rhythm in the present study: clade A included Nigrotrichia group members, H. kiotonensis, H. convexopyga, H. loochooana loochooana, and H. loochooana okinawana, while clade B included Pedinotrichia group members, H. paralella and H. picea. We suggest that after separation into Nigrotrichia and Pedinotrichia, the behavioral trait of circabidian rhythm probably appeared once in an ancestral species of the Pedinotrichia group, including H. parallela and H. picea.
