Abstract
A miniature effusion cell for the vacuum deposition of volatile organic solids with low vapor pressures has been fabricated and used in surface science studies. The effusion cell is designed to operate at up to 200 degrees C under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The size of this cell is so small that it is attached to the top of a transfer rod and can be introduced from a subchamber into a main UHV chamber (retrievable). In addition, the small heat capacity of this cell means rapid heating and cooling rates. The advantages of this evaporator are its simplicity of design and ease of fabrication, assembly, and operation.

Abstract
Although postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy (PAC) with uracil–tegafur significantly improves the prognosis of patients with stage I lung adenocarcinoma, subset analysis has revealed that only 11.5% of patients with stage IB derive actual benefit from such therapy. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify patients for whom adjuvant chemotherapy will be beneficial. We performed comprehensive protein analysis of 24 surgically resected specimens of stage I adenocarcinoma using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), followed by bioinformatical investigations to identify protein molecules. Furthermore, we carried out immunohistochemical studies of 90 adenocarcinoma specimens to validate the results of LC-MS/MS. We detected two kinds of protein molecules (myosin IIA and vimentin) by LC-MS/MS. We confirmed their immunohistochemical expression and distribution, and evaluated the relationship between the expression of these proteins and prognosis after adjuvant chemotherapy. Patients with no expression of either myosin IIA or vimentin showed a significantly better outcome regardless of PAC using uracil–tegafur. However, we were unable to select responders to uracil–tegafur using these proteins. Cases of adenocarcinoma lacking expression of either myosin IIA or vimentin show a good outcome without PAC, and therefore do not require such treatment.

Abstract
The magnetism of LixCoO2 (LCO), which has a similar structure to NaxCoO2 (NCO), has been investigated by muon-spin spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements using samples with x=0.1-1 prepared by an electrochemical reaction. In the x range below 0.75, LCO was found to be Pauli paramagnetic down to 1.8 K, suggesting an intermediate- or weak-coupling regime, although disordered local moments, with volume fractions below approximately 20%, appear at low T for LCO with x > or = 0.5. The phase diagram and interactions of LCO are thus strikingly different from NCO, while the differences cannot be explained simply by structural differences between the two systems.

Abstract
The magnetic orientation has been studied for paramagnetic organic radical crystals 1,3,5-triphenyl-6-oxoverdazyl and 1,5-di-p-tolyl-3-phenyl-6-oxoverdazyl in magnetic fields of 2-80 kOe at temperatures of 77-343 K. The X-ray diffraction measurement has revealed that the crystals are oriented with the crystallographic c axis perpendicular to the field. The anisotropic diamagnetic susceptibility arising from the benzene rings has been estimated for the crystals along the principal magnetic chi 1, chi 2, and chi 3 axes. (The chi 1 axis is at a small angle to the a axis in the monoclinic ac plane, and the chi 3 axis is along the b axis.) Since the paramagnetic susceptibility originating from the verdazyl ring is isotropic (though a large absolute value), it is shown that the magnetic orientation occurs by the anisotropy of the diamagnetic susceptibility in the crystals. The diamagnetic susceptibility is found to have a relation of chi 2 < chi 1 < chi 3 < 0.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Thoroughbred racehorses often experience interruptions to their training. Identifying the effects of these changes and how they alter athletic performance might provide an insight on to how to prevent these changes from occurring. HYPOTHESIS Training and detraining young Thoroughbreds alters their aerobic capacities with correlated changes in circulatory capacities; if horses remained spontaneously active in a pasture during their detraining period, their decreases in aerobic capacity during detraining would be reduced. METHODS We trained 6 Thoroughbred yearlings for 6 months using a conventional yearling race training programme. They were then detrained for 10 weeks with free range on pasture for 8 h/day and stall rest at night. Treadmill measurements of O2 transport variables were made before training (PRE), after training (TR) and after detraining (DT). A step-test protocol identified each horse's aerobic capacity (VO2max) and speed to attain it, and a steady-state run at VO2max was used to quantify 02 transport variables at each time period. RESULTS The mass-specific and whole-body VO2max, cardiac output (Q) and stroke volume (Vs) increased from PRE to TR. All mass-specific values decreased significantly from TR to DT; however, because body mass increased by 8.3% from TR to DT, none of the variables changed significantly from TR to DT on a whole-body basis. CONCLUSIONS Changes in aerobic capacity are highly correlated with changes in Vs and circulatory capacity during training and detraining. Exercise activity of trained young horses free at pasture for 8 h/day is sufficient to maintain VO2max, (Q and Vs during 10 weeks of DT. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE Aerobic and cardiovascular fitness may be maintained in young Thoroughbred horses during at least 10 weeks of detraining by maintaining modest spontaneous exercise activity.

Abstract
The authors investigated the initial stage of water adsorption on Rh(111) at 20 K, using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. In this low coverage region, isolated water molecules and small water clusters are observed. Since thermal diffusion is suppressed at 20 K, the formation of water clusters at low coverage is controlled by both coverage and transient diffusion on the surface. Within a simple random walk model of the transient diffusion and clustering process, the authors estimate the mean lateral displacement from the first impact point to the final adsorption site to be 7.6 A; an incoming water molecule on Rh(111) is trapped with eight postcollision hops on the average.

Abstract
AIMS The pepsinogen (PG) test result is used in Japan for screening for gastric cancer. In this study, we investigated the changes in evaluation of the PG test result following H. pylori eradication. METHODS The subjects were 120 consecutive H. pylori-positive patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Subjects underwent endoscopy prior to, and at 2 months after the eradication therapy, at which time blood was taken for determination of changes in PG levels. RESULTS The overall eradication rate was 79.3% (per protocol). Following eradication therapy, the evaluation of PG test result converted from positive to negative in 80.4% (37/46) of cases of successful eradication, and in 0% (0/6) of cases of eradication failure. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the evaluation of PG test result should be used after the definitive confirmation of the success or failure of H. pylori eradication therapy.

Abstract
We investigated the adsorption states of 2-methylpropene and propene on Si(100)c(4 x 2) using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. We have found that regioselective cycloaddition reactions (di-sigma bond formation) occur between the asymmetric alkene molecules and the asymmetric dimers on Si(100)c(4 x 2). First-principles calculations have elucidated that the regioselectivity is closely related to the structures of precursor species and these precursor species have carbocation-like features. Thus, we conclude that Markovnikov's rule is applicable for the cycloaddition of asymmetric alkene with the asymmetric dimer on Si(100)c(4 x 2).

Abstract
The adsorption states and growth process of the first water (D2O) layer on Rh(111) were investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, temperature programed desorption, and spot-profile-analysis low energy electron diffraction. Water molecules wet the Rh(111) surface intact. At the early stage of first layer growth, a (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees commensurate water layer grows where "up" and "down" species coexist; the up and down species represent water molecules which have free OD, pointing to a vacuum and the substrate, respectively. The up domain was a flatter structure than an icelike bilayer. Water desorption from Rh(111) was a half-order process. The activation energy and the preexponential factor of desorption are estimated to be 60 kJ/mol and 4.8 x 10(16) ML(1/2)/s at submonolayer coverage, respectively. With an increase in water coverage, the flat up domain becomes a zigzag layer, like an ice bilayer. At the saturation coverage, the amount of down species is 1.3 times larger than that of the up species. In addition, the activation energy and the preexponential factor of desorption decrease to 51 kJ/mol and 1.3 x 10(14) ML(1/2)/s, respectively.

Abstract
Stellar explosions such as novae and supernovae produce most of the heavy elements in the Universe. The onset of a nova is well understood as driven by runaway thermonuclear fusion reactions on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary star system; but the structure, dynamics and mass of the ejecta are not well known. In rare cases, the white dwarf is embedded in the wind nebula of a red-giant companion, and the explosion products plough through the nebula and produce X-ray emission. Here we report X-ray observations of such an event, from the eruption of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi. The hard X-ray emission from RS Ophiuchi early in the eruption emanates from behind a blast wave, or outward-moving shock wave, that expanded freely for less than 2 days and then decelerated owing to interaction with the nebula. The X-rays faded rapidly, suggesting that the blast wave deviates from the standard spherical shell structure. The early onset of deceleration indicates that the ejected shell had a low mass, the white dwarf has a high mass, and that RS Ophiuchi is therefore a progenitor of the type of supernova (type Ia) integral to studies of the expansion of the Universe.

Abstract
The quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) cobalt oxides A(N + 2)Co(n + 1)O(3n + 3) (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, n = 1 - infinity) were investigated by muon-spin spectroscopy under applied pressures of up to 1.1 GPa. The relationship between the onset Néel temperature T(on)(N) and the interchain distance (d(ic)), which increases monotonically with n, is well fitted by the formula T(N)/T(N,0) = (1 - d(ic)/d(ic,o)(beta), here for T(on)(N) approximately 100 K for Ca(3)Co(2)O(6) (n = 1) and approximately 15 for BaCoCoO(3) (n = infinity at ambient P. The T(on)(N) - d(ic) curve also predicts a large dependence of Y(N) for the compounds with n > or = 5, i.e., in the vicinity of , while the compounds show only a very small effect. Indeed, our high-pressure mu(+) results show that of BaCoO(3) is enhanced by with a slope of 2.2 K(Gpa), whereas no detectable changes by P for both Ca(3)Co(2)O(6) and Sr(4)Co(3)O(9) (n = 2). This clearly confirms the role of the 2D-antiferromagnetic interaction on T(on)(N) in the Q1D cobalt oxides.

Abstract
Our previous study showed that atropine significantly inhibited the sustained relaxation induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS) in the circular muscle strips prepared from the mouse antrum, and that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) partially mediated the sustained relaxation. The muscarinic receptor subtype associated with the sustained relaxation was examined in the present study by using each muscarinic receptor subtype of knockout (KO) mice. EFS-induced sustained relaxation in the antrum prepared from M(2) receptor KO mice was significantly less than that of wild-type mice. Atropine failed to inhibit this relaxation. On the other hand, similar sustained relaxation and inhibitory effects of atropine to those of wild-type mice were observed in M(1), M(3) and M(4) receptor KO mice. Exogenously added PACAP-27 relaxed the antral strips of wild-type and M(2) receptor KO mice to a similar extent. Immunohistochemical study revealed that M(2) receptor immunoreactivity was localized with PACAP-immunoreactivity in enteric neurons within the antrum of wild-type mice. In contrast, atropine did not affect the EFS-induced sustained relaxation in the gastric fundus. These results suggest that M(2) receptors modulate the sustained relaxation, probably through the regulation of PACAP release, in the mouse antrum.

Abstract
By means of muon-spin spectroscopy, we have found that K0.49CoO2 crystals undergo successive magnetic transitions from a high-T paramagnetic state to a magnetic ordered state below 60 K and then to a second ordered state below 16 K, even though K0.49CoO2 is metallic at least down to 4 K. An isotropic magnetic behavior and wide internal-field distributions suggest the formation of a commensurate helical spin density wave (SDW) state below 16 K, while a linear SDW state is likely to exist above 16 K. It was also found that exhibits a further transition at 150 K presumably due to a change in the spin state of the Co ions. Since the dependence of the internal-field below 60 K was similar to that for Na0.5CoO2, this suggests that magnetic order is more strongly affected by the Co valence than by the interlayer distance or interaction and/or the charge ordering.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effects of glycine betaine (GB) on bone marrow death and intestinal damage by gamma rays or carbon ions. C(3)H/He female mice received an i.p.-injection of GB before or after whole-body irradiation with gamma rays or 50 keV microm(-1) carbon ions. The irradiated mice were observed to determine the mortality for 30 days after exposure. Mice were also killed at 3.5 days after the exposure to determine the intestinal damage. The numbers of crypts per transverse circumference were counted using a microscope. For the bone marrow death, GB (93 mg GB per mouse) significantly (p < 0.05) increased the percentage survival for both radiations. For the intestinal damage, GB (93 mg GB per mouse) significantly (p < 0.05) increased the crypt survival for gamma rays, but not for carbon ions. GB might be a potential protector against normal tissue damage as a side effect in radiotherapy.

Abstract
Villoglandular papillary adenocarcinoma (VGPA) of the uterine cervix is a rare neoplasm, and its treatment has rarely been reported. We report a patient with VGPA stage IIA responding to neoadjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel (60 mg/m2 as an intravenous infusion) and cisplatin (70 mg/m2 as an intra-arterial infusion). At 3 weeks after completing one course of this regimen, the tumor size was reduced from 5.3 x 4.0 cm to 2.0 x 2.0 cm (81.1% reduction), revealed by computed tomography. Accordingly, the patient underwent radical hysterectomy, and there have been no signs of recurrence. Thus, the combination of docetaxel and cisplatin is suggested to be useful for neoadjuvant chemotherapy of cervical adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colonoscopic and clinical differences between primary ileocolonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) have not been defined. METHODS We reviewed colonoscopic and clinical features in eight patients with primary MALT lymphoma and eight patients with MCL in the terminal ileum and/or colorectum. All cases were examined for CD5 and/or cyclin D1 expression. RESULTS Endoscopic features of MALT lymphoma were characterized as protrusions that were covered with normal-appearing mucosa with or without ulceration. The gross appearances of MALT lymphomas were categorized as solitary (4 patients), multiple (3 patients), and multiple lymphomatous polyposis (MLP) (1 patient). The gross features of MCL at endoscopy were categorized as multiple protrusions (2 patients), and MLP (6 patients). The clinical stages of patients with MCL were more advanced than in patients with MALT lymphoma. CONCLUSIONS Solitary or multiple protrusions at an early clinical stage is the most common presentation pattern of patients with MALT lymphoma, but an MLP appearance at an early stage is also possible. On the other hand, MLP appearance with an advanced clinical stage is the main presentation pattern in patients with MCL, although multiple protrusions with an early clinical stage is also possible. Histological and immunohistochemical investigation including that of cyclin D1 and CD5 expression is essential to make the final diagnosis.

Abstract
Here we show that human papillomavirus (HPV) E6 and E7 oncoproteins induce hWAPL expression. In addition, small interfering RNA (siRNA) of hWAPL suppressed the growth of tumours derived from SiHa cells in nude mice. Thus, hWAPL may be one of the effective targets of uterine cervical cancer therapy.

Abstract
The adsorption of water (D(2)O) molecules on Rh(111) at 20 K was investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). At the initial stage of adsorption, water molecules exist as monomers on Rh(111). With increasing water coverage, monomers aggregate into dimers, larger clusters (n = 3-6), and two-dimensional (2D) islands. Further exposure of water molecules leads to the formation of three-dimensional (3D) water islands and finally to a bulk amorphous ice layer. Upon heating, the monomer and dimer species thermally migrate on the surface and aggregate to form larger clusters and 2D islands. Based on the temperature dependence of OD stretching peaks, we succeeded in distinguishing water molecules inside 2D islands from those at the edge of 2D islands. From the comparison with the previous vibrational spectra of water clusters on other metal surfaces, we conclude that the number of water molecules at the edge of 2D islands is comparable with that of water molecules inside 2D islands on the Rh(111) surface at 20 K. This indicates that the surface migration of water molecules on Rh(111) is hindered as compared with the cases on Pt(111) and Ni(111) and thus the size of 2D islands on Rh(111) is relatively small.
