Optical observation of the C, 3ssigma(g)F3, and 3ppi(u)G3 3Pi(u) states of N2

High-resolution laser-based one extreme-ultraviolet (EUV)+one UV two-photon ionization spectroscopy and EUV photoabsorption spectroscopy have been employed to study spin-forbidden (3)Pi(u)-X (1)Sigma(g) (+)(v,0) transitions in (14)N(2) and (15)N(2). Levels of the C (3)Pi(u) valence and 3ssigma(g)F(3) and 3ppi(u)G(3) (3)Pi(u) Rydberg states are characterized, either through their direct optical observation, or, indirectly, through their perturbative effects on the (1)Pi(u) and (1)Sigma(u) (+) states, which are accessible in dipole-allowed transitions. Optical observation of the G(3)-X(0,0) and (1,0) transitions is reported for the first time, together with evidence for six new vibrational levels of the C state. Following the recent observation of the F(3)-X(0,0) transition at rotational resolution [J. P. Sprengers et al., J. Chem. Phys. 123, 144315 (2005)], the F(3)(v=1) level is found to be responsible for a local perturbation in the rotational predissociation pattern of the b(') (1)Sigma(u) (+)(v=4) state. Despite their somewhat fragmentary nature, these new observations provide a valuable database on the (3)Pi(u) states of N(2) and their interactions which will help elucidate the predissociation mechanisms for the nitrogen molecule.

Neuroplasticity of face primary motor cortex control of orofacial movements

We have carried out a series of studies to address the role of the face primary motor area (MI) in the cerebral cortex in trained or semi-automatic orofacial motor behaviours and in behavioural adaptations to an altered oral environment. These studies have utilized intracortical microstimulation (ICMS), reversible cold block or single neurone recordings in face MI. Our studies in monkeys have revealed that face MI plays a strategic role in elemental and learned motor behaviours and in certain aspects of chewing and swallowing. Furthermore, successful training of awake monkeys in a novel tongue-protrusion task is associated with significant neuroplastic changes in face MI. These findings in monkeys are supported by correlated findings in humans which have revealed significantly enhanced corticomotoneuronal excitability when humans learn the novel tongue-protrusion task. Our related ICMS studies in rats reveal that trimming or extraction of the rat's lower incisors or damage to the rat's lingual nerve can result in significant changes in the MI representations of the tongue or jaw muscles. These various findings suggest that the face MI is important in orofacial motor skill acquisition and adaptation to an altered occlusion or loss of teeth or lingual sensory function, and that it reflects dynamic and modifiable constructs that are modelled by behaviourally significant experiences and that are critical to learning and adaptive processes.

A phase II study of combination CPT-11 and docetaxel in patients with ovarian carcinoma refractory or resistant to combination paclitaxel and carboplatin

Background: To investigate the efficacy and toxicity of combination irinotecan and docetaxel in patients with ovarian carcinoma refractory (not responded) or resistant (relapsed within 6 months after the last chemotherapy) to the first line chemotherapy with combination paclitaxel (175mg/m2) and carboplatin (AUC=5). Methods: 30 refractory patients and 28 resistant patients with measurable disease were treated with combination irinotecan (60 mg/m2) and docetaxel (30 mg/m2) at days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks for more than 2 courses. Results: The average number of courses administered was 2.6 for refractory cases and 3.4 for resistant cases. Using RECIST criteria, 2/28 (7%) resistant cases responded completely, 6/30 (20%) of refractory cases and 6/28 (21%) resistant cases were responded partially. 16/30 refractory cases and 14/28 cases progressed. Grade 3–4 toxicities were leukopenia (31%) neutropenia (36%) thrombocytopenia (8%) and diarrhea (6%). Conclusions: Combination chemotherapy of CPT-11 and Docetaxel at days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks is a regimen with moderate toxicity and good compliance, and shows some response to those patients who are refractory or resistant to the first-line chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin with a response rate of 20% and 29%, respectively.

The application of a vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier transform spectrometer and synchrotron-radiation source to measurements of bands of NO. VII. The final report

Photoabsorption measurements of NO bands have been made by vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier transform spectrometry with a resolution of 0.12 cm(-1) in the wavelength region of 166.2-196.2 nm. Accurate line positions are obtained for the delta(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=2, 3, the epsilon(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=2, 3, and the beta(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=10,12,14. Absolute term values are found for the corresponding upper levels C(2,3), D(2,3), and B(10,12,14). Accurate rotational line integrated cross sections have also been obtained for the lines in these bands. Integrated cross sections reported in our earlier papers [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 1751 (1998); 112, 2251 (2000); 115, 3719 (2001); 116, 155 (2002); 117, 10621 (2002); 119, 8373 (2003)] have been revised, and the results reported here comprise the delta(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=0-3, the epsilon(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=0-3, the beta(upsilon,0) bands with upsilon=6,7,9-12,14, and the gamma(3,0) band. For each band, the band oscillator strength is obtained from the sum of the line strengths of all rotational lines, and these are compared with other published values.

Oscillator strength and linewidth measurements of dipole-allowed transitions in N214 between 93.5 and 99.5nm

Line oscillator strengths in 16 electric dipole-allowed bands of 14N2 in the 93.5-99.5 nm (106,950-100,500 cm(-1)) region have been measured at an instrumental resolution of 6.5 x 10(-4) nm (0.7 cm(-1)). The transitions terminate on vibrational levels of the 3psigma 1Sigma u (+), 3ppi 1Pi u, and 3ssigma 1Pi u Rydberg states and of the b' 1Sigma u (+) and b 1Pi u valence states. The J dependences of band f values derived from the experimental line f values are reported as polynomials in J'(J'+1) and are extrapolated to J'=0 in order to facilitate comparisons with results of coupled-Schrodinger-equation calculations that do not take into account rotational interactions. Most bands in this study reveal a marked J dependence of the f values and/or display anomalous P-, Q- and R-branch intensity patterns. These patterns should help inform future spectroscopic models that incorporate rotational effects, and these are critical for the construction of realistic atmospheric radiative transfer models. Linewidth measurements are reported for four bands. Information provided by the J dependences of the experimental linewidths should be of use in the development of a more complete understanding of the predissociation mechanisms in N2.

A clinical study of Japanese patients with ulcer induced by low-dose aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

BACKGROUND

The incidence and severity of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-induced gastro-duodenal ulcer have not been extensively studied in Japan.

AIM

We performed a prospective study to clarify NSAIDs-induced gastro-duodenal injury, focusing especially on low-dose aspirin (L-A).

METHODS

Two hundred and thirty-eight patients with bleeding peptic ulcers admitted to our hospital. History of taking NSAIDs and anti-ulcer drugs was obtained from all patients who underwent endoscopic examinations. The lesion scores of patients taking L-A were classified numerically from zero (no lesion) to five (ulcer).

RESULTS

The NSAIDs were associated with 28.2% of hemorrhagic ulcers. The rates of patients using L-A, loxoprofen, diclofenac, and combination of two of these drugs were 27, 16, 10 and 9%, respectively. Co-administered anti-ulcer drugs were cytoprotective anti-ulcer drugs (27%), H2 receptor antagonists (16%), PPI (4%), and none (53%). In patients taking L-A, H2 receptor antagonists were used most frequently. The HP was positive in 63% of L-A-induced ulcer cases and in 69% of NSAIDs other than low-dose aspirin-induced ulcer cases. The lesion scores of patients taking L-A with H2 receptor antagonists or PPI were significantly lower than those of patients who were taking only L-A (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Approximately one-third of hospitalized patients with NSAIDs-induced hemorrhagic ulcer showed an association with L-A. Prospective randomized controlled trials including H2 receptor antagonists are required to establish preventive efforts aimed at L-A-induced gastro-duodenal injury.

Control of oro-facio-lingual movements by the substantia nigra pars reticulata: High-frequency electrical microstimulation and GABA microinjection findings in rats

To provide direct evidence for substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) control of oro-facio-lingual muscle activity, high-frequency electrical microstimulation (mainly trains of 20, 333-Hz cathodal pulses at 40-60 microA) and GABA microinjection (1-5 microl of 10 mM GABA in saline) were carried out using a three-barreled microelectrode at the same SNr site in lightly anesthetized, chronically decorticated rats (n=39). Decortication eliminated the possibility that SNr microstimulation might activate corticofugal fibers descending in the adjoining cerebral peduncle. When the most ventral layer of the SNr was approached, high-amplitude electromyographic (EMG) activity of up to 6 mV with a distinctive waveform appeared synchronously with electrical stimuli in the anterior digastric, masseter, genioglossus, and levator labii superioris muscles. This EMG activity was evoked bilaterally, with an ipsilateral predominance. Eye movements, mostly rotation of the eyeball vertically down in the orbit, were noted. Infrequent blinking was also noted. Histologic examination localized the effector site to the middle third of the mediolateral extent of the caudal SNr corresponding to between 5.8 mm (level of the oculomotor nerve) and 6.5mm (caudal end of the SNr) caudal to bregma; and to the ventralmost peripeduncular region of the SNr corresponding to 7.7 mm to 8.0 mm beneath the cortical surface. We referred to this site as the substantia nigra pars reticulata oro-facio-lingual (SNr-ofl) region. GABA injection produced tonic EMG discharge with consistent amplitude in all of the four muscles studied. The GABA effect was negated by a preceding microinjection of the GABA-A receptor antagonist bicuculline, whereas saline control injection had no effect. Changes in amplitude of evoked EMG activity according to location of the stimulating microelectrode reflected somatotopic organization of the SNr-ofl region. This extremely localized electrical and receptor microstimulation in the SNr produced synchronized powerful contraction of jaw, tongue, and facial muscles with different neural innervation. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms of the SNr concerning oro-facio-lingual movements.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for malignant melanoma with special reference to absorbed doses to the normal skin and tumor

Twenty-two patients with malignant melanoma were treated with boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) using 10B-p-boronophenylalanine (BPA). The estimation of absorbed dose and optimization of treatment dose based on the pharmacokinetics of BPA in melanoma patients is described. The doses of gamma-rays were measured using small TLDs of Mg2SiO4 (Tb) and thermal neutron fluence was measured using gold foil and wire. The total absorbed dose to the tissue from BNCT was obtained by summing the primary and capture gamma-ray doses and the high LET radiation doses from 10B(n, alpha)7Li and 14N(n,p)14C reactions. The key point of the dose optimization is that the skin surrounding the tumour is always irradiated to 18 Gy-Eq, which is the maximum tolerable dose to the skin, regardless of the 10B-concentration in the tumor. The neutron fluence was optimized as follows. (1) The 10B concentration in the blood was measured 15-40 min after the start of neutron irradiation. (2) The 10B-concentration in the skin was estimated by multiplying the blood 10B value by a factor of 1.3. (3) The neutron fluence was calculated. Absorbed doses to the skin ranged from 15.7 to 37.1 Gy-Eq. Among the patients, 16 out of 22 patients exhibited tolerable skin damage. Although six patients showed skin damage that exceeded the tolerance level, three of them could be cured within a few months after BNCT and the remaining three developed severe skin damage requiring skin grafts. The absorbed doses to the tumor ranged from 15.7 to 68.5 Gy-Eq and the percentage of complete response was 73% (16/22). When BNCT is used in the treatment of malignant melanoma, based on the pharmacokinetics of BPA and radiobiological considerations, promising clinical results have been obtained, although many problems and issues remain to be solved.

Rodlike particles in gas discharge plasmas: theoretical model

Recently, complex plasmas with strongly asymmetric (rodlike) particles were investigated experimentally in rf and dc discharges [V. I. Molotkov et al., JETP Lett. 71, 102 (2000); B. M. Annaratone et al., Phys. Rev. E 63, 036406 (2001)]. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed which describes the behavior of such systems. Major results of the proposed model are the following: Equilibrium charge is calculated for particles orientated perpendicular and parallel to the ion flux (electric field); equilibrium states of particles (orientation angle and levitation height) are obtained; energy of electrostatic interaction between rods is derived, depending on the mutual orientation. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results shows quite good agreement. In conclusion, some important theoretical issues as well as possible new experiments are discussed.
