Abstract
Purpose: To describe an uncommon presentation of ocular infection caused by human herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2).Methods: Case report.Results: A 32-year-old female with no prior history of mucocutaneous herpesvirus infection presented with a minimally painful hypertensive granulomatous panophthalmitis and optic neuropathy that was initially suspected to be orbital cellulitis. Her disease progressed despite antibiotic and steroid treatment, and HSV-2 was ultimately identified in the vitreous.Conclusion: Although rare, ocular infection by human herpesvirus can present as a panophthalmitis. The case is discussed in the context of two previously reported cases of herpes simplex panophthalmitis, as well panophthalmitis caused by varicella zoster virus.

Abstract
Southwest Atlantic (SWA) estuaries have been historically impacted by industrial and agricultural activities that represent an important source of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Intraspecific differences in OCPs and PCBs levels were evaluated in the benthic polychaete Laeonereis culveri from SWA estuaries (Samborombón; Mar Chiquita; Quequén Grande and Bahía Blanca) at different spatio-temporal scales. Regarding inter- and intra-estuarine spatial comparisons polychaetes showed significant differences in OCPs/PCBs levels (p < 0.05) being DDTs, endosulfan, penta- and hexa-CBs homologues the most representative compounds. Intra-estuarine comparisons also showed significant differences in terms of seasonality and body size (p < 0.05). OCPs/PCBs concentrations were negatively correlated with animal weight, but this covariable was not relevant on differences observed. OCPs/PCBs levels in polychaetes showed strong relationships with those of sediments, being suitable for estuarine biomonitoring studies. Seasonal and body-size differences found in OCPs and PCBs levels in tissues reveal the importance of these factors for intra-estuarine monitoring.

Abstract
Background: Overcrowding, lack of operational funds, and healthcare associated infections are major challenges at the Children Hospital Lahore, a public healthcare facility in Pakistan with 900 new pediatric cancer admissions annually. In 2014, a collaboration between My Child Matters (MCM), St. Jude Global Infectious Diseases Program (SJ-GID), and our institution was established to address these issues. Aim: To describe the effect of a collaborative improvement strategy on the infection prevention and control (IPC) standards in a pediatric oncology unit in a resource-limited setting. Methods: Our study was a prospective before-and-after study. We compare the WHO Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework (HHSAF) and 4 modules of the St. Jude modified Infection Control Assessment Tool (ICAT) scores. Our strategy included: (1) creating a multidisciplinary team of pediatric hematology-oncology, infectious disease physicians, nurses, microbiologist, and a data manager, (2) engaging on monthly online IPC mentoring sessions with the SJ-GID and MCM mentors, (3) performing daily inpatient healthcare associated (HAI) surveillance rounds, and (4) providing regular hand hygiene training and compliance audits. Results: Our hand hygiene facility level per WHO scores increased from “Inadequate” during the baseline assessment to “Intermediate/Consolidation” by the end of 3-year implementation (122 vs 352 HHSAF scores). The sink: bed and hand sanitizer: bed ratios improved to 1:6 and 1:1 respectively. Six washrooms were added to our unit. ICAT general infection control module increased by 40% (45 vs 78 ICAT score) and hygiene compliance improved by 20% from baseline. Identification of HAI increased from baseline (4.07 vs 8.7 infections per 1000 patient days). A 25% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant microorganisms. Conclusion: Implementing a collaborative improvement strategy improved the IPC standards in our pediatric cancer center. The increase of HAI might be a result of a better surveillance and laboratory identification. Further targeted interventions should be develop to decrease HAI rates and infection-related morbidity and mortality in our population.

Abstract
Human erythropoietin is mainly recognized for its hematopoietic function; however, by binding to its receptor (EpoR), it can activate different signaling pathways as STAT, PI3K, MAPK and RAS to increase cellular differentiation or provide neuroprotective effects, among others. A recombinant human erythropoietin variant with low glycosylation and without hematopoietic effect (EpoL) was purified from skimmed goat milk. Recombinant human erythropoietin (Epo) was obtained from CHO cell line and used as control to compare EpoL effects. Neuroprotection studies were performed in PC12 cells and rat hippocampal slices. Cells were pretreated during 1h with EpoL or Epo and exposed to oxidative agents (H2O2 or FCCP); cell viability was assayed at the end of the experiment by the MTT method. Hippocampal slices were exposed to 15min of oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) and the neuroprotective drugs EpoL or Epo were incubated for 2h post-OGD in re-oxygenated medium. Cell cultures stressed with oxidative agents, and pretreated with EpoL, showed neuroprotective effects of 30% at a concentration 10 times lower than that of Epo. Moreover, similar differences were observed in OGD ex vivo assays. Neuroprotection elicited by EpoL was lost when an antibody against EpoR was present, indicating that its effect is EpoR-dependent. In conclusion, our results suggest that EpoL has a more potent neuroprotective profile than Epo against oxidative stress, mediated by activation of EpoR, thus EpoL represents an important target to develop a potential biopharmaceutical to treat different central nervous system pathologies related to oxidative stress such as stroke or neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The peach non-specific lipid transfer protein, Pru p 3, is the primary sensitizer in fruits and responsible for severe reactions in the Mediterranean area. Peach allergy is frequently associated with other allergies such as peanut. Therefore, it is important to assess how specific immunotherapy to Pru p 3 could affect both peach and peanut tolerance. OBJECTIVES To evaluate peach and peanut desensitization and immunological changes after 1 year of Pru p 3 sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in patients with systemic allergic reactions to peach and/or peanut. METHODS Forty-eight peach allergic patients, 36 treated with SLIT and 12 non-treated, were monitored for 12 months. Treated patients were subclassified as peanut allergic (Group A), sensitized (Group B) or tolerant (Group C). SLIT effect was evaluated by skin prick test (SPT) reactivity and food challenge. Immunological changes were evaluated by monitoring sIgE and sIgG4 levels and basophil reactivity. RESULTS After 1 year of SLIT, the weal area in SPT significantly decreased and a significant increase in peach threshold in treated patients was observed (P < 0.001). Patients in Group A showed a significant decrease in peanut SPT weal area and an increase in peanut threshold (P < 0.001). Immunological changes were observed in treated patients only, with a significant decrease in sIgE and a parallel increase in sIgG4, sIgG4/sIgE and basophil reactivity for both Pru p 3 and Ara h 9. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE After 1 year, Pru p 3 SLIT induces both desensitization and immunological changes not only for peach but also for other food allergens relevant in the induction of severe reactions such as peanut.

Abstract
Subcutaneous specific immunotherapy (SCIT) has been shown to modify the Dermatophagoides pteronissinus (DP) allergic response, characterized by generation of Treg cells. However, studies have reported no changes in the proportion of Treg cells after immunotherapy, indicating that the effects may be due to modifications in their regulatory activities. We aimed to determine whether Tregs generated by DP-SCIT can switch the allergic response to tolerant and study the involvement of suppressive cytokines on it. Twenty-four DP-allergic rhinitis patients were recruited, 16 treated with DP-SCIT and 8 untreated. Treg and T effector cells were isolated before and after DP-SCIT, and cocultured in different combinations with α-IL-10, α-TGF-β blocking antibodies and nDer p 1. Treg cells after DP-SCIT increased Th1 and decreased Th2 and Th9 proliferation. Similarly, they increased IL-10 and decreased IL-4 and IL-9-producing cells. α-IL-10 affected the activity of Treg cells obtained after DP-SCIT only. Finally, DP-specific IgG4 levels, Treg percentage and IL-10 production were correlated after DP-SCIT. These results demonstrate that DP-SCIT induces Treg cells with different suppressive activities. These changes could be mediated by IL-10 production and appear to play an important role in the induction of the tolerance response leading to a clinical improvement of symptoms.

Abstract
The main applications of 188Re in radionuclide therapies include trans-arterial liver radioembolization and palliation of painful bone-metastases. In order to optimize 188Re therapies, the accurate determination of radiation dose delivered to tumors and organs at risk is required. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) can be used to perform such dosimetry calculations. However, the accuracy of dosimetry estimates strongly depends on the accuracy of activity quantification in 188Re images. In this study, we performed a series of phantom experiments aiming to investigate the accuracy of activity quantification for 188Re SPECT using high-energy and medium-energy collimators. Objects of different shapes and sizes were scanned in Air, non-radioactive water (Cold-water) and water with activity (Hot-water). The ordered subset expectation maximization algorithm with clinically available corrections (CT-based attenuation, triple-energy window (TEW) scatter and resolution recovery was used). For high activities, the dead-time corrections were applied. The accuracy of activity quantification was evaluated using the ratio of the reconstructed activity in each object to this object's true activity. Each object's activity was determined with three segmentation methods: a 1% fixed threshold (for cold background), a 40% fixed threshold and a CT-based segmentation. Additionally, the activity recovered in the entire phantom, as well as the average activity concentration of the phantom background were compared to their true values. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulations of a commercial [Formula: see text]-camera were performed to investigate the accuracy of the TEW method. Good quantification accuracy (errors <10%) was achieved for the entire phantom, the hot-background activity concentration and for objects in cold background segmented with a 1% threshold. However, the accuracy of activity quantification for objects segmented with 40% threshold or CT-based methods decreased (errors >15%), mostly due to partial-volume effects. The Monte-Carlo simulations confirmed that TEW-scatter correction applied to 188Re, although practical, yields only approximate estimates of the true scatter.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the health status of an economic and ecologically important fish species from Mar Chiquita Lake, a RAMSAR site located in Cordoba, Argentina, relative to the levels of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in lake water and fish tissues. Odontesthes bonariensis was used as a model species, and its health was estimated by means of histological indices in gills and liver. Sampling was performed according to rainy and dry seasons (i.e. dry, rainy and post-rainy). Gill and liver histopathology were evaluated by semi-quantitative indices and morphometric analysis. Although epithelial lifting in gills and lipid degeneration in liver were frequently registered, they are considered as reversible if environmental conditions improve. During rainy and post-rainy seasons fish presented significantly higher scores of liver and total indices. These higher index scores were correlated with increased levels of POPs in gill and liver tissue. Therefore, preventive measures are needed to mitigate the entry of these compounds into the lake.
