Abstract
BACKGROUND A total of 12 phenylpropanoid amides were subjected to quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis, based on their cytotoxicity, tumor selectivity and anti-HIV activity, in order to investigate on their biological activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cytotoxicity against four human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines and three human oral normal cells was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. Tumor selectivity was evaluated by the ratio of the mean CC50 (50% cytotoxic concentration) against normal oral cells to that against OSCC cell lines. Anti-HIV activity was evaluated by the ratio of CC50 to EC50 (50% cytoprotective concentration from HIV infection). Physicochemical, structural, and quantum-chemical parameters were calculated based on the conformations optimized by the LowModeMD method followed by density functional theory (DFT) method. RESULTS Twelve phenylpropanoid amides showed moderate cytotoxicity against both normal and OSCC cell lines. N-Caffeoyl derivatives coupled with vanillylamine and tyramine exhibited relatively higher tumor selectivity. Cytotoxicity against normal cells was correlated with descriptors related to electrostatic interaction such as polar surface area and chemical hardness, whereas cytotoxicity against tumor cells correlated with free energy, surface area and ellipticity. The tumor-selective cytotoxicity correlated with molecular size (surface area) and electrostatic interaction (the maximum electrostatic potential). CONCLUSION The molecular size, shape and ability for electrostatic interaction are useful parameters for estimating the tumor selectivity of phenylpropanoid amides.

Cold-nuclear-matter effects on heavy-quark production at forward and backward rapidity in d + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:252301. Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay over the transverse momentum range 1 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p + p collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions, relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, a suppression is observed at forward rapidity (in the d-going direction) and an enhancement at backward rapidity (in the Au-going direction). Predictions using nuclear-modified-parton-distribution functions, even with additional nuclear-p(T) broadening, cannot simultaneously reproduce the data at both rapidity ranges, which implies that these models are incomplete and suggests the possible importance of final-state interactions in the asymmetric d + Au collision system. These results can be used to probe cold-nuclear-matter effects, which may significantly affect heavy-quark production, in addition to helping constrain the magnitude of charmonia-breakup effects in nuclear matter.

Abstract
Cross sections of 1n-removal reactions from the neutron-rich nucleus (37)Mg on C and Pb targets and the parallel momentum distributions of the (37)Mg residues from the C target have been measured at 240 MeV/nucleon. A combined analysis of these distinct nuclear- and Coulomb-dominated reaction data shows that the (37)Mg ground state has a small 1n separation energy of 0.22(-0.09)(+0.12) MeV and an appreciable p-wave neutron single-particle strength. These results confirm that (37)Mg lies near the edge of the "island of inversion" and has a sizable p-wave neutron halo component, the heaviest such system identified to date.

Abstract
Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the second- and third-order event plane for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the second- and third-order event planes. The results for the second-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the third-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the third-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.

Abstract
The halo structure of 31Ne is studied using 1n-removal reactions on C and Pb targets at 230 MeV/nucleon. A combined analysis of the cross sections of these nuclear and Coulomb dominated reactions that feed directly the 30Ne ground-state reveals 31Ne to have a small neutron separation energy, 0.15(-0.10)(+0.16) MeV, and spin-parity 3/2-. Consistency of the data with reaction and large-scale shell-model calculations identifies 31Ne as deformed and having a significant p-wave halo component, suggesting that halos are more frequent occurrences at the neutron drip line.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We newly synthesized twenty 2-aminotropones with different lengths of methylene units, with or without introduction of isopropyl group at C-4 position of the cycloheptatriene ring, which were then subjected to quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Viable cell number was evaluated by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. The tumor specificity was determined by the ratio of the mean CC50 (50% cytotoxic concentration) for the normal cells (human gingival fibroblast, HGF) to that of the human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell line (Ca9-22) derived from gingival tissue. Anti-UV activity (SI) was determined by the ratio of CC50 to EC50 (the concentration that increased the viability of UV-irradiated cells to 50%) using HSC-2 OSCC cells. Physico-chemical, structural, and quantum-chemical parameters were calculated based on conformations optimized by the LowModeMD method followed by the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) method. Fine-cell structure was observed by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS 2-Aminotropones induced cytotoxicity, accompanied by the production of many rough endoplasmic reticula with enlarged lacuna and vacuolated mitochondria. Their cytotoxicity was a positive function of the number of methylene units and hydrophobicity. Anti-UV activity showed a good correlation with lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy, but not with the length of methylene units. All twenty 2-aminotropones induced a very low level of hormetic growth stimulation at lower concentrations. CONCLUSION Different types of chemical descriptors may be applicable to estimating the cytotoxicity and anti-UV activity of 2-aminotropones.

Abstract
AIM Assessment of flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and nitroglycerin-mediated dilation (NMD) in the brachial artery by a new device (UNEXEF18G) has been reported to be excellent for evaluating endothelial function, and sympathetic overdrive can accelerate the atherosclerotic process. The purpose of this study was to investigate and confirm whether anti-sympathetic beta-blocking action can enhance the pleiotropic effects of statins. METHODS FMD and NMD were measured using the UNEXEF18G before and after 4-week treatment of rosuvastatin (5 mg/day) with or without atenolol (25 mg/day) in 44 hypercholesterolemic patients (70±8 years old, LDL-C >140 mg/dL) with hypertension. Patients were randomly allocated to two treatment arms: rosuvastatin alone (R-group, N.=22) and rosuvastatin with atenolol (RA-group, N.=22). RESULTS Baseline FMD was not different between the two treatment arms, and both groups showed improvement in FMD (R-group, 3.48±1.9% to 4.65±2.41%, P<0.05; RA-group, 3.42±1.48% to 5.46±1.79%, P<0.05), while there were no differences in NMD. The effects on lipid profiles were identical in the two groups. In addition, FMD improvement was greater in the RA-group than in the R-group (Δchange 2.15±1.29% vs. 1.16±1.15%, P<0.05). CONCLUSION Beta-blockade enhances the pleiotropic effects of statins on endothelial function. The mechanism should be confirmed by further studies.

Quadrupole anisotropy in dihadron azimuthal correlations in central d+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 111:212301. Abstract
The PHENIX collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) reports measurements of azimuthal dihadron correlations near midrapidity in d+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. These measurements complement recent analyses by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) involving central p+Pb collisions at √(s(NN))=5.02 TeV, which have indicated strong anisotropic long-range correlations in angular distributions of hadron pairs. The origin of these anisotropies is currently unknown. Various competing explanations include parton saturation and hydrodynamic flow. We observe qualitatively similar, but larger, anisotropies in d+Au collisions at RHIC compared to those seen in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The larger extracted v2 values in d+Au are consistent with expectations from hydrodynamic calculations owing to the larger expected initial-state eccentricity compared with that from p+Pb collisions. When both are divided by an estimate of the initial-state eccentricity the scaled anisotropies follow a common trend with multiplicity that may extend to heavy ion data at RHIC and the LHC, where the anisotropies are widely thought to arise from hydrodynamic flow.

Abstract
We present results for three charmonia states (ψ', χc, and J/ψ) in d+Au collisions at |y|<0.35 and sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. We find that the modification of the ψ' yield relative to that of the J/ψ scales approximately with charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p+A, d+Au, and A+A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large-impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the ψ' and J/ψ, while in small-impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound ψ' is more strongly suppressed. Owing to the short time spent traversing the Au nucleus, the larger ψ' suppression in central events is not explained by an increase of the nuclear absorption owing to meson formation time effects.
